NOW, THIS IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH, THE 31ST 2021, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE GARLAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL HOLD A SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE MEETING AT 11:30 AM AT THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES OF THE GARLAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT 601 SOUTH JUPITER ROAD, GARLAND, TEXAS, 75042.

THE SUBJECT TO BE DISCUSSED ARE LISTED ON THE AGENDA.

ITEMS LISTED ON THE AGENDA DO NOT HAVE TO BE TAKEN IN THE ORDER SHOWN IF DURING THE COURSE OF THE MEETING COVERED BY THIS NOTICE, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SHOULD DETERMINE THAT A CLOSED EXECUTIVE MEETING OR SESSION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES IS REQUIRED.

ALL RIGHT. WELL, WE'RE JUST GOING TO TALK ABOUT A FEW COVID-19 UPDATES.

I'LL BE VERY BRIEF ON IT.

IF YOU'LL GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.

OUR NUMBERS IN GARLAND ISD CONTINUE TO DECLINE, WHICH IS GREAT.

WE DID HAVE ALMOST ZERO ONE WEEK, WHICH WE WERE EXTREMELY EXCITED ABOUT.

WE HAVE WENT UP A LITTLE BIT.

NUMBERS AROUND THE STATE ARE GOING UP SLIGHTLY.

I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING TO GET.

PLEASE DON'T LET IT GET TO WHERE IT WAS BEFORE SPRING BREAK AND HOPEFULLY WILL CONTINUE TO DECLINE. WE HAVE STARTED OUR RAPID TESTING PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.

PARENTS ARE REALLY, REALLY RESPONSIVE TO THE TESTING.

THEY'RE APPRECIATIVE OF IT.

AND I EVEN HAD ONE PARENT COME PERSONALLY AND SAID, THANK YOU FOR OFFERING IT TO THE STUDENTS. SO I THINK WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A GOOD RESPONSE TO TESTING OUR STUDENTS AND NOT HAVING TO QUARANTINE QUITE SO OFTEN.

WHEN I DID THIS SLIDE, OVER TWO THOUSAND OF OUR STAFF RECEIVED THE COVID-19 VACCINE.

WE'RE UP TO WELL OVER 3000 AT THIS POINT.

WE HAVE ANOTHER EVENT TOMORROW AND THESE ARE ONLY THE STAFF THAT REPORTED THAT THEY RECEIVED THE VACCINE IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT THAT THEY REPORT TO US THAT THEY WERE VACCINATED. IT IS CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION.

IF THEY WANT TO SHARE IT, THAT'S GREAT.

IF THEY DON'T, THEY DON'T HAVE TO AT THIS TIME.

ONE OF THE THINGS I'VE REALLY BEEN PROMOTING THE VACCINE ABOUT IS IF YOU ARE EXPOSED, AND YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN VACCINATED AND IT'S BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE YOUR VACCINATION.

THEY NO LONGER HAVE TO QUARANTINE WITH EXPOSURE.

CDC JUST CHANGED THAT.

IT WAS 90 DAYS AND NOW IT'S YOU DON'T HAVE TO AT ALL UNLESS YOU BECOME SYMPTOMATIC.

I THINK THAT IS ONE OF THE MAIN ADVANTAGES BESIDES WITH COVID OF WHY WE NEED TO HAVE OUR STAFF VACCINATED AND WHY I THINK IT'S SO IMPORTANT FOR OUR DISTRICT.

AND NEXT SLIDE.

A LOT OF THE PHONE CALLS I GET IS ABOUT THE VARIANTS.

SOME PEOPLE ARE A LITTLE BIT SCARED TO GET THE VACCINE BECAUSE THEY SAID, WELL, I'M GOING TO GET A VACCINE. THESE NEW VARIANTS ARE COMING OUT AND IT'S NOT GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. AND THEY DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO GET ANOTHER SHOT, ANOTHER SHOT, ANOTHER SHOT.

RIGHT NOW, FROM WHAT WE CAN TELL, THAT THE CURRENT VACCINES ARE COVERING THE VARIANTS THAT ARE IN OUR AREA. AND I CAN'T SAY THAT'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE THE CASE, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE COVERING THE VARIANTS THAT ARE IN OUR AREA.

THE VARIANTS I GET A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT.

YES, THEY DO SPREAD MORE EASILY, BUT THEY'RE NOT ANY MORE DEADLY.

SO THAT'S GOOD. AND I THINK EVERYBODY ALREADY HAD COVID AFTER CHRISTMAS BREAK BECAUSE WE HAD A HUGE SPIKE AT THAT TIME.

AND THAT IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY MASKING IS STILL VERY IMPORTANT SO WE CAN MINIMIZE THE SPREAD. WE'RE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET.

I KNOW EVERYBODY WANTS TO LET THEIR HAIR DOWN AND OPEN UP AND MINIMIZE THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE.

BUT NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO DO IT.

WE STILL HAVE TO BE VERY DELIBERATE WITH WHAT WE DO.

AND TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DON'T HAVE ADDITIONAL OK.

ARE WE STILL SEEING THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS WE DID WITH THE ORIGINAL CORONAVIRUS? IS IT SENSE OF SMELL TASTE THE SAME SYMPTOMS WITH THE VARIANTS.

SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS. THE ONLY WAY WE EVEN KNOW IT IS A VARIANT IS BECAUSE THEY DO SAMPLE TESTS.

SO WHEN THEY GO IN THE LAB AND THEY TEST TO SEE IF YOU HAVE COVID, THEY'LL NOTICE THAT IT'S A VARIANTS AND THAT'S HOW THEY CODE IT.

AND NOW WITH YOUR RAPID TESTS, WE WON'T KNOW IF IT'S A VARIANTS OR NOT AND THE SYMPTOMS ARE THE SAME.

PLUS WITH THE STATE OPENING UP VACCINES FOR EVERYBODY, THAT'S GOING TO HELP US.

SO I'M THINKING MAYBE BY THE END OF THE YEAR WE CAN OPEN SOME STUFF UP.

WE DON'T WANT TO START OPENING UP TOO EARLY BECAUSE WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS, IS IT'S LIKE WE'RE EXCITED. WE'RE GOING TO OPEN IT UP AND THEN WE HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO SQUARE ONE. I NEVER WANT TO GO BACK TO SQUARE ONE.

HOW IS IT GOING TO AFFECT US HERE AT GARLAND, ISD? AND DO YOU SEE ANY OF THE DISINFECTING OR ANY OF THOSE PROTOCOLS A CHANGE HERE IN THE NEAR FUTURE? WELL, ONE THING, THE CDC, DID PUT OUT NEW GUIDELINES ABOUT THE DISTANCING THREE FEET.

NOW, WE'VE NEVER GUARANTEED 6 FEET DISTANCING THE WAY I LOOK AT IT, IF YOU HAVE A CLASSROOM THAT HAS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SIZE LET'S NOT ALL SQUEEZE THEM TOGETHER, BECAUSE THREE FEET STILL THREE FEET.

YOU STILL HAVE TO KEEP AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, IT DOESN'T APPLY TO ADULTS.

IT ONLY APPLIES TO CLASSROOM SETTINGS, IT DOESN'T APPLY TO HALLWAYS AND IT DOESN'T APPLY TO WHAT THEY CONSIDER EXPOSURE.

SO IN OTHER WORDS, IF WE DO SQUEEZE EVERYONE, WE PUT EVERYONE THREE FEET AWAY.

THE EXPOSURE STILL IS CONSIDERED WITHIN SIX.

SO ALL THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE SITTING WITHIN THREE FEET DISTANCE WILL HAVE TO QUARANTINE OR GO INTO OUR RAPID TESTING PROGRAM.

NOW, YOUR ORIGINAL, WE WILL STILL DO THE KNOW NIGHTLY AS FAR AS THAT GOES.

BUT THAT EXTRA CLEANING THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING, THEY JUST SIMPLY DIDN'T FIND IT AS EFFECTIVE. THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS SUPPOSED TO COME UP WITH A NEW DOCUMENT

SO FAR, I'VE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE ONE HUNDRED DOSES AND WE GAVE THOSE EARLY ON AND THEN SOME WANT PFIZER ONLY.

SO I'M LOOKING FOR A VENDOR THAT OFFERS PFIZER.

ARE WE DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN CAMPUS STAFF AND TEACHERS? ANYBODY I'VE OPENED UP THE VACCINES TO EVERYBODY.

I ALREADY GOT THE VACCINE.

BUT THERE ARE PLENTY STAFF OUT THERE THAT GOT THE VACCINE ON THEIR OWN.

AND THEY JUST FOR WHATEVER REASON, THEY DON'T HAVE TO THEY DON'T WANT TO DISCLOSE IT.

OK. SO AT THIS POINT, MY FOCUS IS JUST ANYBODY WHO SAYS THEY NEED HELP GETTING THE VACCINE, I'M GOING TO FIND A VACCINE.

SO THE OTHER ITEM WITH THE AUDIT, AGAIN, THE AUDIT TENDS TO OVERWHELM PEOPLE.

QUICKLY. IT TOOK US FROM THE TIME WE IDENTIFIED AND DRAINED UNTIL WE FINISHED ALL THE REFILLS ABOUT FIVE WEEKS THE PROCESS WITHOUT GOING TOO CRAZY IN DETAIL.

WE APPLIED AIR TO EVERY SYSTEM UP TO NINETY PSI FOR TWENTY FOUR HOURS, MONITORED THAT PRESSURE, CAME BACK, REFILLED IT, LEFT THE CITY VALVES CLOSED.

SO IF SOMETHING DID FAIL OVERNIGHT, EVEN THOUGH WE TESTED IT WITH AIR THERE, THAT WE WOULDN'T BE PUTTING FULL CITY PRESSURE INTO THE BUILDING AND FLOODING A BUILDING, WE WOULD JUST DRAIN WHAT WAS IN THE SYSTEM.

WE STARTED THE PROCESS ACTUALLY TESTING AND REFILLING ON FEBRUARY 24TH.

THERE WAS SOME PLANNING PRIOR TO THAT DATE.

ALL BUT 13 SYSTEMS WERE DONE BY MARCH SIX, THE REMAINING WE COMPLETED DURING SPRING BREAK. SO FIVE WEEKS OF BASICALLY STEADY WORK.

AND BY STEADY WORK, OUR TECHNICIAN SUPPORTED THE CONTRACTOR BY PROVIDING A PRESENCE TO FIND PLACES IN THE BUILDING TO UNLOCK DOORS.

SO OUR STAFF PUT IN A LOT OF TIME AND A LOT OF EFFORT DURING THIS PROCESS.

WITH THAT ARE THERE ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS ON THE SPRINKLER? AND I WOULD SAY WE'RE STILL WORKING OUT THE FINAL NUMBERS.

AS FAR AS THE REPAIRS, I APOLOGIZE.

WE REPLACED IT, THEN WE AIRED IT BACK UP.

IF WE FOUND SOMETHING AFTER WE AIRED IT, WE DRAIN THE AIR WE REAIRED IT AFTER IT WAS REPAIRED, WAITED THE TWENTY FOUR HOURS, REFILLED IT AND FOLLOWED THE SAME PROCESS TO GET A COMPLETE WITH THOSE SEGMENTS, THE NEWER SEGMENTS BEING COMBINED WITH SEGMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN THERE PROBABLY FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS.

DOES THAT IMPACT THE OVERALL INTEGRITY OF THE SYSTEM AS IT'S GOING THROUGH VARIOUS CYCLES WITH HOT AND COLD AND ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF WITH THE WEATHER? I THINK THE BEST EXAMPLE, IT IT PUTS A NEWER PART INTO A SYSTEM.

IT DOESN'T IT DOESN'T DAMAGE ANYTHING ELSE OR OR CAUSE ANY OTHER ISSUES IN THE SYSTEM.

OUR DISTRICT RESPONSE OF SERVICE COUNSELORS OFFER AN ADDITIONAL HOUR TRAINING. THAT'S A SYNCHRONOUS SESSION THAT PROVIDES PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS WITH ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY.

WE DO NOT GO OUT WITHOUT WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE SECURITY DEPARTMENT AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND WE GENERALLY DO NOT GO OUT UNTIL AFTER IT'S BEEN CLEAR FOR US TO GO. AND THE FAMILY HAS AGREED THAT THEY WANT ADDITIONAL SUPPORT.

BUT IF WE FIND OUT SOMETHING THAT'S HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL DAY, THEN NORMALLY WE'RE ABLE TO HAVE THAT TWO WAY COMMUNICATION AND LET THE POLICE OFFICERS KNOW.
