IT IS TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2021. A LOT OF EXCITEMENT IN THE ROOM. WELCOME BACK. SCHOOL STARTS ON MONDAY AND THERE IS LOTS OF EXCITEMENT. I KNOW THAT SO MANY PEOPLE. YEAH, GIVE YOURSELVES A HAND. SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DOING SO MUCH. WE REALIZE THERE IS A LOT TO BE DONE. WE REALIZE THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT NEED US. THANK YOU ALL FOR SHOWING UP. THANK YOU ALL TEACHERS, STAFF, EVERYBODY THAT'S INVOLVED AND GETTING OUR SCHOOL READY FROM THE PEOPLE WHO WORK ON THE FACILITIES TO THE MAINTENANCE OF THE YARD TO EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING INTO THIS. THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE STACKING BOXES AND BOOKS AND EQUIPMENT AND GETTING STUFF READY, FRESH AND NEW AND NICE. THANK YOU TO ALL THE PTAS, ALL THE AIDES, ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE OUT THERE THAT ARE WORKING. I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU ALL BECAUSE I KNOW MONDAY IS GOING TO BE A MAGIC DAY FULL OF CHALLENGES, BUT IT'LL BE A MAGIC DAY. AND I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THAT. WE CALL THIS MEETING TO ORDER. THERE IS A QUORUM, IF YOU WOULD RISE, WE'LL DO OUR PLEDGES. OK, TALK ABOUT EXCITEMENT, FIRST, INFORMATION ON INFORMATION, ITEM A. [IV.A. Evidence of Excellence ] EVIDENCE OF EXCELLENCE, WE'RE GOING TO RECOGNIZE NURSE RENEE. I'M NOT GONNA TO SAY HER LAST NAME. NURSE K. MR. MILLER. WE HAVE DR. SUSANNA RUSSELL. MR. MILLER, I SAW HER IN A RESTAURANT. WE CAN'T MOVE ON TILL WE DO A PUBLIC FORUM. DID SOMEBODY SKIP PUBLIC FORUM. I DON'T KNOW WHO DID IT. [LAUGHTER] LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I'M GOING TO PRACTICE SAYING RENEE'S NAME SO THAT I'LL BE READY WHEN IT COMES UP. WE'RE GOING TO GO TO ITEM THREE PUBLIC FORUM. ANY MEMBERS HERE WHO WISH TO SPEAK. MECHELLE, DO WE HAVE ANY CARDS FOR PUBLIC? NONE. OK, I THOUGHT SURE. I THOUGHT SURE NURSE RENEE WOULD WANT TO SPEAK AFTER THAT. I SAW HER. THIS NEXT ITEM IS WE'LL GO TO ITEM 4 NUMBER A RECOGNIZE NURSE RENEE K. DR. SUSANNA RUSSELL WILL COME FORWARD. I DID SEE NURSE K IN THE RESTAURANT THIS WEEK. AND WHEN I WAS IN THERE, I JUST HAD TO CALL HER NURSE RENEE OR NURSE KBECAUSE I JUST HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO PRONOUNCE HER LAST NAME RIGHT. SO IF YOU'LL HELP ME. ABSOLUTELY. PRESIDENT MILLER, HONORABLE TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT LOPEZ, IT IS WITH TREMENDOUS PLEASURE THAT I COME BEFORE YOU THIS EVENING TO RECOGNIZE RENEE KOTSOPOULOS AS THE REGION TEN DALLAS COUNTY SCHOOL NURSE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR. [APPLAUSE] THAT'S HER DIRECT SUPERVISOR, IT HAS BEEN MY DISTINCT PLEASURE TO WORK WITH NURSE K, AS WE LOVINGLY CALL HER OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS. AS YOU ALL KNOW, GARLAND ISD PLACES TREMENDOUS VALUE ON THE POWER OF SCHOOL NURSES, GUARANTEEING TO OUR FAMILIES AND STAFF THAT EVERY SCHOOL IS STAFFED BY A REGISTERED NURSE. AND THE SUCCESSFUL WORK AND DEDICATION OF THESE NURSES IS SUSTAINED AND FUELED DAILY BY THEIR LEADER, OUR DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES. LAST YEAR IN A YEAR THAT WAS SO OFTEN DEFINED BY A GLOBAL PANDEMIC. NURSE K WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING GARLAND ISD COMMUNITY SAFELY RETURN TO SCHOOL, TO WORK AND TO SOME SEMBLANCE OF NORMALCY. UNDER HER LEADERSHIP, WE IMPLEMENTED METICULOUS REOPENING GUIDELINES THAT ALLOWED STUDENTS AND STAFF TO RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING. RENEE AND OUR NURSING TEAM CONTACT TRACED, QUARANTINED, RAPID TESTED, FACILITATED VACCINATION DRIVES AND HELPED ALL OF US FIND VACCINES. THE PARTNERSHIPS THAT SHE HAS CULTIVATED WITH OUR GARLAND AND DALLAS HEALTH DEPARTMENTS, AS WELL AS WITH PROVIDERS ACROSS THE METROPLEX, ALLOWED US TO BE AGILE IN MONITORING AND RESPONDING TO CURRENT HEALTH NEEDS. RENEE IS THE GO TO FOR GARLAND ISD FOR ADVICE, RECOMMENDATIONS AND WISDOM. [00:05:05] SHE'S BEEN DUBBED BY MANY THE MVP OF COVID-19. AND IF LAST YEAR WAS ONLY ABOUT HOW RENEE MET EVERY COVID RELATED CHALLENGE, SHE WOULD BE A SUPERSTAR. BUT HER WORK EXTENDS FAR BEYOND THAT SCOPE AND HAS NOT BEEN DETERRED BY THE PANDEMIC. RENEE IS A SERVANT LEADER, A COLLABORATOR AND A NETWORK BUILDER. SHE ESTABLISHED OUR FIRST EVER GARLAND ISD MEDICAL CONSULTANT PARTNERSHIP WITH ONE BENEFIT BEING THAT ALL GARLAND ISD CAMPUSES NOW HAVE STOCK EPI PENS FOR EMERGENCY USE AND COLLABORATION WITH THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION THAT RESULTED IN THE HEALTHY KIDS HEALTHY FAMILIES PROGRAM BEING NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AND AS AN EXEMPLAR PROGRAM. AND AS WE MOVE TO HEAVILY VIRTUAL WORKING CONDITIONS, NURSE RENEE LED THE WAY BY BECOMING GOOGLE EDUCATOR CERTIFIED AND HELPED HER NURSES GET GOOGLE PROFICIENT AS WELL. SHE SERVES THROUGH HER LEADERSHIP, HER EXAMPLE AND HER RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE. THERE ARE MANY WAYS I CAN DESCRIBE WHY RENEE CASSOPOLIS IS THE ICON FOR EXCELLENCE AND GARLAND ISD. SHE IS SPECIAL. SHE IS UNSTOPPABLE. SHE'S A ROLE MODEL AND ENCOURAGER AND A FIERCE ADVOCATE. GARLAND ISD IS HEALTHIER, SAFER AND BETTER CARED FOR BECAUSE RENEE KOTSOPOULOS IS OUR DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES. IT IS MY PROFOUND JOY TO HONOR HER AS EVIDENCE OF EXCELLENCE IN ACTION. RENEE, COME ON FORWARD . [APPLAUSE] AND NOW YOUR PHOTO OP WITH OUR BOARD. THANK YOU. YOU KNOW, THIS SUMMER WAS FUNNY WHEN YOU SAY I TALK TO YOU EVERY WEEK THIS SUMMER, I WAS THINKING TO MYSELF, YOU KNOW, I'M SITTING AT MY DESK AND I HAVEN'T HAD A CASE IN A WEEK. AND I THINK THIS IS AWESOME. BUT THE BEST THING IS I DON'T HAVE TO GO IN FRONT OF THE BOARD AGAIN. YOU'RE ALL LOVELY, BUT IT IS A LITTLE NERVE WRACKING TO BE UP HERE AND TO TALK IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY, BUT I APPRECIATE IT. I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL MY NURSES AND ALL THE HARD WORK THAT THEY DO. I COULD NOT DO WHAT I DO IF IT WASN'T FOR THEIR SUPPORT AND NOT ONLY FOR THEIR SUPPORT, BUT THE PREDECESSOR THAT WAS BEFORE ME. I ALWAYS HAVE TO THANK MAGGIE WILLIS. SHE WAS AN ICON IN THIS DISTRICT. SHE TAUGHT ME WHAT IT MEANT TO BE A GREAT LEADER AND TO FOLLOW MY HEART AND TO FOLLOW MY PASSION. AND MY PASSION IS STUDENTS AND CHILDREN. THAT IS MY PASSION. SO AND MR. MILLER CAN ATTEST, BECAUSE I WAS HOLDING THE BABY THAT WAS AT THE RESTAURANT, I WOULDN'T LET ANYBODY ELSE HOLD IT. BUT THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT. I APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU. [APPALUSE] OK, I'M GOING TO TRY TO GO IN ORDER NOW SO THAT LARRY DOESN'T HAVE TO CORRECT ME AGAIN. THANK YOU, MR. GLICK. OK, WE'RE GOING TO ITEM A ITEM FOR A TWO RECOGNIZE GARLAND ISD RESPONSIVE SERVICES DEPARTMENT. LISA, LISA OLSEN. ACTUALLY I'M GOING TO TAKE HER PLACE. OK, WE HAVE A SUBSTITUTE. YES. PRESIDENT MILLER, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD. DR. LOPEZ, I JUST WANT TO, VERY HONORED TO GIVE THIS AWARD TONIGHT. THE REASON WHY DR. OLSEN IS NOT UP HERE IS BECAUSE SHE'S ACTUALLY RECEIVING PART OF THIS AWARD. SO WE DIDN'T WANT HER TO HAVE TO PRESENT TO HERSELF. SO WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT SHE GOT THE HONOR THAT SHE DESERVES. BUT IT'S REALLY GOING TO BE EASY ON ME BECAUSE WE HAVE A SPECIAL GUEST THAT'S HERE TONIGHT. MARK HOWARD FOR GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOLS IS GOING TO GIVE A SPECIAL PRESENTATION TO THE GARLAND ISD COUNSELING SERVICE AND THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES TEAM. SO, MR. HOWARD. SO I WANT TO SAY ON BEHALF OF THE GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOL INITIATIVE AND TO PRESIDENT MILLER, SUPERINTENDENT LOPEZ, HONORED BOARD MEMBERS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTNERSHIP. [00:10:05] WHEN I SAY PARTNERSHIP, I DON'T TAKE THAT LIGHTLY BECAUSE THIS WAS A LONG ENDEAVOR WITH THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES TEAM AND ALL OF THE COUNSELORS TO ROLL OUT AN INAUGURAL PROGRAM THAT HELPS TO EDUCATE YOUR TEACHERS, YOUR COUNSELORS, YOUR ADMINISTRATORS ON GRIEF. AND IT'S AN ISSUE THAT IS PREVALENT AND EVER GROWING. AND UNBEKNOWNST TO US, WE WERE GOING TO BE FACING A LOT MORE GRIEF WITH THE PANDEMIC, YOU KNOW, A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER WHEN WE ROLLED THIS OUT AT THE BEGINNING OF 2019. AND SO, YOU KNOW, THE ISSUE IS, IS YOUR TEACHERS PROBABLY HAVE SOMEONE IN THEIR CLASS WHO'S DEALT WITH GRIEF, A LOST A PARENT, LOST A SIBLING AND THE TEACHERS MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO TALK TO THEM. AND THAT'S WHAT THIS PROGRAM WAS BUILT TO DO, IS TO HELP EDUCATE AND PROVIDE RESOURCES TO YOUR TEACHERS, TO YOUR COUNSELORS, SO THAT THEY COULD MORE EFFECTIVELY HELP THEM THROUGH THEIR TOUGH TIMES. AND IF YOU IF YOU SURVEY ADMINISTRATORS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, ONLY ABOUT 10 PERCENT OF THEM SAY THEY'VE EVER BEEN TRAINED. BUT NOW, THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES TEAM, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF YOUR CAMPUSES HAVE BEEN TRAINED ON THE GRIEF SENSITIVE PROCESS, ON THE GRIEF SENSITIVE RESOURCES THAT ARE AVAILABLE. AND THAT PUTS YOU IN THE TOP FIVE PERCENT OF THE DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WHAT THE INITIATIVE IS, IS IT'S REALLY JUST TO PROVIDE AWARENESS OF THE ISSUE, TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNOW THAT THIS IS SOMETHING NOT TO TAKE LIGHTLY. BECAUSE IMAGINE YOU'RE A KID WHO JUST LOST THEIR FATHER, LOST THEIR MOTHER OR BROTHER. THE TURMOIL THAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR HEAD, YOUR HEART, IN YOUR CLASSES AND THE DISRUPTION THAT MIGHT BE GOING ON INSIDE AND IT MIGHT BE MISDIAGNOSED AS, HEY, THIS IS A PROBLEM, KID, WHEN THEY'RE REALLY JUST TRYING TO DEAL WITH GRIEF. AND NOW YOUR TEACHERS, YOU KNOW, ARE BETTER EQUIPPED AND MORE CONFIDENT IN HELPING THEM TO DEAL WITH THIS. YOU SEE THE FOUNDING MEMBERS THERE ON THE RIGHT. THAT'S WHAT ENABLED US TO PARTNER WITH YOU GUYS, IS THE STRENGTH OF THE THE PARTNERS THAT WE HAVE WITH THIS PROGRAM, MOST NOTABLY THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR SCHOOL CRISIS AND BEREAVEMENT, PARTNERED WITH THE NEW YORK LIFE FOUNDATION TO CREATE THIS GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOL INITIATIVE, WHICH WE ROLLED OUT. AND I'LL TELL YOU, OUT OF ALL THE UNITED STATES, THERE'S ONLY ONE DISTRICT, ONE SCHOOL DISTRICT LARGER THAN GARLAND WHO'S ENDORSED THIS ACROSS THE NATION. THAT'S MIAMI-DADE. YOU GUYS ARE THE SECOND LARGEST DISTRICT IN THE NATION WHO WHO'VE ENDORSED THIS. AND IT MADE MY LIFE SO MUCH EASIER BECAUSE INSTEAD OF HAVING TO GO TO EACH OF YOUR SEVENTY TWO CAMPUSES AND ASK THE PRINCIPAL TO ROLL THIS OUT, AND I JUST WENT TO TIFFANY AND DR. OLSEN AND ASKED THEM, HEY, DOES THIS SEEM LIKE IT'S A GOOD PROGRAM? THEY IMMEDIATELY ENDORSED IT. AND YOU GUYS BECAME THE SECOND DISTRICT IN THE U.S. TO ROLL THIS OUT. SO AGAIN, I SAY THIS WAS A PARTNERSHIP AND I THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH. AND IN EXCHANGE FOR US PROVIDING THESE RESOURCES TO YOUR SCHOOL, ALL WE ASKED WAS TO SHARE THEM, SHARE THEM WITH YOUR YOUR TEACHERS, TO SHARE THEM WITH YOUR PARENTS, YOUR COMMUNITY, SHARE THEM VISIBLY. YOU KNOW, YOU'LL SEE DECALS ON ALL OF YOUR SCHOOLS THAT THAT INDICATE YOU ARE A GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOL AND YOU'VE BEEN APPROVED. WE HAVE IT ON YOUR YOUR WEBSITE. WILL YOU SAY BE PROUD ABOUT IT? AND SO THROUGH THE FUNDS THAT WERE DONATED, THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT HAS CREATED CRISIS KITS FOR EACH ONE OF YOUR SCHOOLS SO THAT THEY CAN BE BETTER PREPARED TO DEAL WITH DEATH. THAT INEVITABLY IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN OUR SCHOOL YEAR. I REMEMBER WHEN WE FIRST ROLL THIS OUT, A KID WAS WAS SHOT AT GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL THE VERY NEXT DAY. AND SO WE WERE BACK THERE THE NEXT DAY PROVIDING WHAT TO SAY, WHAT NOT TO SAY, TIP SHEETS FOR ALL THE TEACHERS WHO WERE DIRECTLY INVOLVED. AND THEY THANKED US IMMENSELY. AND SO ON BEHALF OF THE THE THE NEW YORK LIFE FOUNDATION AND THE GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOL INITIATIVE, I WANT TO PRESENT TO PRESIDENT MILLER A PLAQUE CONGRATULATING YOU GUYS ON YOUR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT. AND AGAIN, ONE OF THE. TWO LARGEST DISTRICTS IN THE NATION HAVE ENDORSED THIS, I WANT TO THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] HERE'S A SYMBOLIC CHECK FOR THE THIRTY SIX [00:15:06] THOUSAND DOLLARS THAT WAS DONATED TO THE DISTRICT ON BEHALF OF ALL OF THE THE GRANTS THAT WERE AWARDED TO EACH OF YOUR CAMPUSES. SO THIS IS GOING TO SERVE THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES TEAM IN LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS. YOU KNOW, LEAST OF ALL LAPTOPS, THEY CAN GO BE PORTABLE AND MOBILE ACROSS THE CAMPUS. WE THANK YOU, GUYS. CAN WE GET A PICTURE OF THE CHECK? WE WANT TO THANK MARK HOWARD FROM GRIEF'S AND SORT OF SCHOOLS FOR THE WONDERFUL DONATION FOR A WORTHY CAUSE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. APPRECIATE IT FOR THEIR HARD WORK ON THIS PROJECT. THE GARLAND ISD, THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT THE EVIDENCE OF EXCELLENCE AWARD TO THE TEAM THAT WORKED ON THIS PROJECT, THEIR HARD WORK. SO I'D LIKE TO START WITH TIFFANY GILMORE. SHE'S GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING DIRECTOR FOR THE DISTRICT, DR. LISA OLSEN, RESPONSIVE SERVICE ADMINISTRATOR. [APPLAUSE] AND THEIR RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELORS FOR THE TEAM, WE HAVE LISA WHATLEY, JIM FOSTER, RHONDA JOHNSON, CAMILLE LUCAS, [INAUDIBLE], PAUL MOORE, LITZA BODDEN, LARRY MCENTIRE, BRIANNA BROWN AND EMMA JOHNSON. [APPLAUSE] [IV.B. Going the Extra Mile (GEMs) ] OK, WELL, THANK YOU FOR THAT PRESENTATION, WE'LL NOW MOVE ON TO ITEM B GOING THE EXTRA MILE. ITEM NUMBER ONE UNDER THAT IS RECOGNIZED GOING THE EXTRA MILE GEM RECIPIENT JENNY GRAVES AS PRESENTED BY SHERESE LIGHTFOOT. JENNY, WILL YOU COME WITH ME? [00:20:03] STAND RIGHT HERE. GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT MILLER, BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND DR. LOPEZ. JENNY GRAVES, OUR GARLAND EDUCATION FOUNDATION SECRETARY, WAS NOMINATED BY SEVERAL OF HER COLLEAGUES THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT FOR HER COMMITMENT TO MAKING GARLAND ISD A SHINING STAR. LET ME SEE IT, MR. WES. THAT'S RIGHT. ON A TYPICAL DAY, YOU WILL SEE JENNY STANDING ALONGSIDE HER BOSS AND HER MOST PRECIOUS ADVOCATE, LISA COX, WHO'S HERE TONIGHT. AND THEY HAVE AN AMAZING JOB OF PROVIDING MONEY TO OUR SCHOOLS AND OUR TEACHERS THROUGH GRANT OPPORTUNITIES. THEY CALL THESE GIRLS THE DYNAMIC DUO AND THE MONEY TEAM. YOU SEE HER BEAUTIFUL SMILE, HER POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HER CHEERFUL DEMEANOR. YOU'LL SEE HER HELPING, PLANNING, ORGANIZING, DECORATING, BALLOONING, CRAFTING ALL THE THINGS THAT JENNY DOES. YOU'LL SEE HER PREPARING FOR OUR AMAZING GEF, G E F TINSEL AND TRIVIA EVENT. AND EVERY SPRING YOU SEE HER HELPING COORDINATE AND ORGANIZE OUR FAMOUS GOLF TOURNAMENT. BUT LET ME TELL YOU WHAT YOU DON'T SEE ABOUT JENNY. WHAT YOU DON'T SEE EVERY DAY, IS THIS BEAUTIFUL SOUL WHO COMES IN AND JUST LIGHTS UP A ROOM, WHICH YOU DON'T SEE IS HOW SHE GOES AROUND SEEKING HOW SHE CAN HELP OTHERS. YOU DON'T SEE HOW SHE DROPS POSITIVE WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT AND GIVES SMALL TOKEN OF APPRECIATION WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE HAVING A BAD DAY, YOU DON'T SEE HOW SHE'S MAKING AN IMPACT IN SO MANY LIVES. YOU DON'T SEE HOW SHE'S ON HER KNEES BLOWING UP BALLOONS AND HAVING HER FINGERS ALL RED AND BUT SHE'S SO SELFLESS EVERY DAY WHEN SHE COMES TO WORK. LET ME GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE. WE JUST RECENTLY SHOT OUR THE GISD EFFECT VIDEO. IT WAS DURING THE SUMMERTIME AND ALL THE KIDS WERE GONE. THE BUILDINGS WERE EMPTY. AND WE HAD TO CREATE THIS AMAZING VIDEO. I SAID, OH, GOSH, WHERE ARE WE GOING TO GET KIDS FROM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER? JENNY, OH, I'LL HELP. YOU NEED HELP. I'LL DO IT. JUST IT'S POSITIVE THAT WAY. JENNY WENT OUT IN PROBABLY I DON'T EVEN PROBABLY FIFTEEN MINUTES. SHE HAD A WHOLE ROSTER OF KIDS FROM ALL ACROSS GARLAND. THEY CAME, THEY WERE THERE. THEY WERE GREAT. THE KIDS THAT YOU SAW IN THAT VIDEO, IT IS BECAUSE JENNY ORGANIZED ALL OF THAT. SHE'S THE ONE THAT GOT ALL THE KIDS THERE IN THE STUDIO. AND I'M SO APPRECIATIVE. THOSE ARE THINGS THAT YOU JUST DON'T SEE. AND SHE WAS ON VACATION. SO SHE'S ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP. SHE'S ALWAYS SACRIFICING HER TIME AND SHE'S DEFINITELY COMMITTED TO GARLAND ISD. ISAAC NEWTON SAYS THAT EVERYTHING HE ACHIEVED WAS A RESULT OF STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS. I COULDN'T PUT IT ANY BETTER, JENNY ALL OF OUR SUCCESS IS DOWN TO YOUR SKILL AND UNTIRING APPLICATION EVERY DAY. I AM AMAZED BY THE EFFORT THAT YOU PUT IN AND THE SACRIFICES THAT YOU MAKE. AND I WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE AND APPRECIATE YOUR HARD WORK AND THAT YOU CONTINUE TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND EVERY DAY. YOU'RE TALENTED. AND I HOPE THAT YOU KNOW THAT, BECAUSE IF NOT NOW, YOU KNOW, SOME PEOPLE DON'T HAVE TO WORK. SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT HARD WORK BEATS TALENT. WE'RE GRATEFUL THAT WE DON'T NEED TO KNOW THAT IF THAT'S TRUE OR NOT, BECAUSE YOU'VE SHOWN US THAT TALENT DOES WORK HARD. JENNY, YOU'RE INTRINSICALLY MOTIVATED TO MAKE GARLAND ISD BETTER. AND WE'RE SO GRATEFUL. YOUR COLLEAGUES, WHEN I ASKED THEM ABOUT YOU, THEY SAID THAT YOU'RE HARD WORKING, THAT YOU'RE DEPENDABLE, THAT YOU'RE CONFIDENT THAT YOU'RE A JOY TO WORK WITH. AND WHEN THEY THOUGHT OF CPR, THEY THOUGHT, JENNY IS OUR LIFELINE. JENNY, YOU ARE THE GISD EFFECT. YOU ARE IMPACTING LIVES AND CHANGING FUTURES. TOGETHER WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO GREAT THINGS. AND I'M SO LUCKY TO HAVE YOU AS PART OF OUR TEAM, AND WE'RE SO LUCKY TO HAVE YOU IN GISD. SO PLEASE HELP ME WELCOME AND CONGRATULATE OUR GEM, JENNY GRAVES. [APPLAUSE] MR. MILLER, IF YOU WOULD COME. NO, I'M SORRY, AND SHE IS RECEIVING OUR BEAUTIFUL CRYSTAL GEM AWARD AND A CERTIFICATE FROM OUR PRESIDENT BOARD OF TRUSTEES. [IV.C. Holdsworth Center Overview- Dr. Susanna Russell, Brian Gilson-Holdsworth Center ] [00:25:51] OK, THE NEXT ITEM, ITEM C, IS A REVIEW OF THE WHOLE HOLDSWORTH CENTER OVERVIEW BY DR. SUSANNA RUSSELL AND BRIAN GILSON OF THE HOLDSWORTH CENTER. THIS IS ON PAGE EIGHT BOARD. GOOD EVENING AGAIN, TRUSTEES. IT IS MY GREAT HONOR TO INTRODUCE TO YOU BRIAN GILSON FROM THE HOLDSWORTH CENTER. HE HAS TRAVELED TO JOIN US TONIGHT SO THAT YOU CAN HEAR STRAIGHT FROM THE EXPERTS MOUTH ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP THAT WE ARE EMBARKING ON WITH THE HOLDSWORTH CENTER. WE'VE RETURNED FROM OUR FIRST WEEK OF IN-DEPTH LEARNING, AND MANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD US SPEAKING ABOUT THE LEARNING THAT WE ARE EMBEDDING ALREADY IN OUR WORK. AND WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO BRIAN SO HE CAN GIVE YOU AN OVERVIEW OF THIS AMAZING JOURNEY THAT WE'LL BE ON. ALL RIGHT. GREAT. THANK YOU. WELL, IT IS A REAL HONOR AND PLEASURE TO BE HERE. MR. PRESIDENT, DR. LOPEZ, OTHER MEMBERS OF THE BOARD HERE REALLY EXCITED TO TALK ABOUT HOLDSWORTH AND THE JOURNEY THAT WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO EMBARK ON WITH GARLAND USA AS I'VE HEARD. YEAH. SO OUR MISSION HERE AT HOLDSWORTH IS TO IMPACT OVER TIME THE QUALITY OF K-12 PUBLIC EDUCATION FOR ALL TEXAS STUDENTS BY SUPPORTING AND DEVELOPING OVERALL LEADERS AND PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN TEXAS. WHAT'S REALLY INSPIRING, IT DOESN'T SEEM INSPIRING AT FIRST, BUT WHAT'S REALLY INSPIRING TO ME ABOUT THIS MISSION ARE THE WORDS OVER TIME, BECAUSE IT REALLY SHOWS THAT THE RECOGNITION THAT CHARLES AND WE AT HOLDSWORTH HAVE THAT SYSTEMIC CHANGE IN THE SPACE IS CHALLENGING AND TAKES TIME. AND WE ARE REALLY COMMITTED TO GOING DEEP AND AND STAYING WITH AND STICKING WITH OUR PARTNER DISTRICTS FOUR OR FIVE YEARS, BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT MAKING AND KEEPING THAT SYSTEMIC CHANGE IS REALLY CHALLENGING. AND SO I ALLUDED TO WE WERE FOUNDED BY CHARLES BUTTON, WHO AS MANY OF YOU ALL KNOW IS THE CEO OF ATB. AND I THINK THIS QUOTE, PARTICULARLY THE BOLDED TEXT AT TOP. AT THE TOP, THERE IS NO SHORTCUT AND NO SILVER BULLET. I THINK IT'S A GREAT OUTLINE OF HIS BELIEF THAT MAKING LONG TERM SUSTAINABLE IMPROVEMENTS IN PUBLIC EDUCATION IS CHALLENGING BUT EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN ORDER TO MAKE LONG LASTING CHANGE IN THIS WORK. AND SO WE WERE ACTUALLY NAMED THE HOLDSWORTH CENTER WAS NAMED AFTER CHARLES'S MOTHER, MARY ELIZABETH HOLDSWORTH, WHO IN THE 1920S WAS A TEACHER IN THE HILL COUNTRY. YOU CAN SEE HER SORT OF IN THE BACK ROW HERE. THIS WAS A PICTURE OF ONE OF HER CLASSES. SHE IS ONCE SAID TO HAVE TOLD CHARLES, IF YOU THINK BUSINESS IS HARD, YOU SHOULD TRY TEACHING. AND SO SHE REALLY FOSTERED IN HIM JUST AN APPRECIATION FOR TEACHERS AND THE WORK THAT EDUCATORS IN TEXAS ARE DOING. SO A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR APPROACH WITH DISTRICTS. SO, YOU KNOW, AND I ALLUDED TO THIS EARLIER, THAT WE REALLY TAKE A LONG VIEW OF THIS WORK. WE KNOW THAT MEANINGFUL IMPROVEMENT AND CHANGE IS GOING TO TAKE TIME AND DOESN'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT. WE ALSO BELIEVE THAT LEADERSHIP ISN'T ABOUT SUPERHEROES. IT'S REALLY GOING TO REQUIRE TEAMS AND SYSTEMS OF LEADERS THROUGHOUT AN ORGANIZATION TO MAKE LONG LASTING, SUSTAINABLE CHANGE. AND THEN WE ALSO SEE OUR ROLE AT HOLDSWORTH NOT TO REPLACE THE ROLE OF GARLAND ISD IN DEVELOPING LEADERS, BUT REALLY TO BUILD THE CAPACITY OF LEADERS WHO ARE ALREADY IN GARLAND, USA. AND FINALLY, YOU KNOW, WE DON'T SEE OUR ROLE IS TO TELL DISTRICTS YOU MUST DO A, B AND C CERTAINLY WE'LL HAVE IDEAS AND WE'D BE HAPPY TO TO SHARE THOSE. BUT OUR GOAL IS REALLY TO DEVELOP DEEP PARTNERSHIPS WITH OUR PARTNER DISTRICTS AND HELPING HELPING YOU ALL FIGURE OUT WHAT IS IT, THE SYSTEM AND THE STRUCTURES THAT YOU WANT YOU [00:30:02] ALL WANT TO BUILD. AND WE'RE HERE TO SORT OF BE THE FUEL AND BE THE INSPIRATION AND BE THE GUIDANCE BEHIND YOU ALL TO HELP MAKE THAT MAKE THAT A REALITY. AND THIS QUOTE FROM ONE OF OUR FORMER LEADERS IN COHORT ONE I THINK IS A GREAT SORT OF ENCAPSULATION OF OUR WORK AND SORT OF OUR APPROACH. DR. RANDLE ACTUALLY RECENTLY LEFT THE SUPERINTENDENCY IS NOW A SUPERINTENDENT IN RESIDENCE FOR US AND AT HOLDSWORTH. SO GREAT. SO A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR APPROACH. SO, THIS IS WHAT WE CALL OUR CURRICULUM PYRAMID. AND SO IT STARTS AT THE BOTTOM. AND THESE THREE DARK BLUE SHAPES ARE THE THREE PILLARS OF THE CURRICULUM THAT WE FOCUS ON WITH OUR LEADERS, CREATE CHANGE GROW AND EMPOWER OTHERS AND DEVELOP PERSONAL LEADERSHIP. THAT IS TRUE FOR OUR DISTRICT LEADERS PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM AND OUR CAMPUS LEADERS AS WELL. WE ALSO WORK WITH WE'LL WORK WITH LEADERS IN THE SYSTEM TO CREATE A PIPELINE OF READY LEADERS. AND THAT BASICALLY MEANS, YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT EVERY SCHOOL IN GARLAND HAS A GREAT PRINCIPAL AND THAT THERE IS A BENCH OF LEADERS WHO ARE READY TO STEP INTO THE PRINCIPAL ROLE IN CASE A VACANCY DOES DOES ARISE AND WE ALSO WANT TO HELP YOU FOSTER AND BUILD UPON THE STRONG STAFF CULTURE THAT YOU'VE ALREADY BUILT HERE IN GARLAND. AND THEN FINALLY, WE KNOW WE'RE AS I SAID EARLIER, WE'RE ALL ABOUT EXCELLENT AND EQUITABLE OUTCOMES FOR ALL STUDENTS. AND THAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL AND ORIENTATION OF ALL OF OUR WORK TOGETHER. SO TO GIVE YOU ALL A SENSE OF THE PART OF THE TIMELINE OF THE PARTNERSHIP, SO IT IS A FIVE YEAR PARTNERSHIP, AS I SAID EARLIER, AND WE'RE STARTING OUT IN YEAR ONE, A NUMBER, AS DR. RUSSELL REFERRED TO EARLIER, A NUMBER OF OUR SENIOR LEADERS IN GARLAND HAVE COMPLETED THEIR FIRST SESSION OF THE DISTRICT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AT OUR CAMPUS ON LAKE AUSTIN, WHICH I'LL TALK ABOUT IN JUST A MOMENT. THEY WILL GO THROUGH A TWO YEAR EXPERIENCE, PERSONAL LEADERSHIP, LEARNING ABOUT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FROM GREAT ORGANIZATIONS SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND ALSO THE PRIVATE SECTOR, AND START TO THINK ABOUT THE LEADERSHIP PIPELINE HERE AND THE TYPE OF SYSTEM THEY ULTIMATELY WANT TO CREATE AND BUILD. AND THEN YOU SEE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SLIDE THE CAMPUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. SO THIS IS A SIMILARLY A TWO YEAR INTENSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR PRINCIPALS AND THEIR LEADERSHIP TEAMS. AND OVER TIME, WE AIM TO ENGAGE ABOUT 50 PERCENT OF CAMPUSES IN GARLAND IN THE CAMPUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. DURING THIS PROGRAM, CAMPUSES WILL, LIKE I SAID, GO THROUGH SOME LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, SOME PERSONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPAL'S WILL GO THROUGH EXECUTIVE COACHING. AND THEY WILL ALSO SELECT A PROBLEM OF PRACTICE RELATED TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT TO WORK ON. AND THAT WILL BE SORT OF THE CENTERPIECE OF THEIR WORK THROUGHOUT THE TWO YEAR EXPERIENCE. AND THE FINAL RECTANGLE AT THE BOTTOM IS DISTRICT SUPPORT. AND THAT IS THE TEAM THAT I WORK ON. AND AS YOU CAN SEE, WE'RE WITH YOU ALL THROUGHOUT THE THE FIVE YEARS OF THE PARTNERSHIP. AND WE'RE REALLY HERE TO HELP THE DISTRICT BUILD THE SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND TALENT MANAGEMENT AND TO PROVIDE THAT SORT OF LIKE I SAID EARLIER, THAT FUEL AND THAT ADDITIONAL CAPACITY IN THE BACKGROUND TO HELP HELP CREATE AND SUSTAIN THOSE SYSTEMS. I DID WANT TO SPEAK A BIT ABOUT OUR CAMPUS. I DON'T HAVE A SLIDE FOR IT, BUT OUR CAMPUS, THE CAMPUS ON LAKE AUSTIN, SOME OF OUR THE LEADERS IN GARLAND JUST WERE THERE A FEW WEEKS AGO. IT JUST OPENED A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. THIS IS A, I BELIEVE, TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY MILLION DOLLAR GIFT FROM CHARLES TO PUBLIC EDUCATORS IN TEXAS. IT IS WORDS CAN'T REALLY IN ENCAPSULATE IT. IT IS TRULY IMPRESSIVE AND JUST A REAL GIFT. YOU CAN SPEAK TO ANY OF THE LEADERS WHO HAVE BEEN AT IT FOR MORE. BUT IT IS IT'S REALLY INCREDIBLE AND VERY HUMBLING JUST TO SEE CHARLES'S BELIEF IN TEACHERS AND LEADERS AND AND THIS WORK OVER TIME SPOKE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THESE PROGRAMS. AND THEN THE OTHER PIECE OF OUR MODEL I WANT TO SPEAK ABOUT IS WHAT WE CALL THE 70/20/10 APPROACH TO LEARNING. SO WE'RE BIG BELIEVERS IN THIS AND ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS THE WORK THAT WE'LL DO ON THE GROUND WITH LEADERS, ARE BASED ON THIS APPROACH. AND WHAT THIS SAYS IS THAT 10 PERCENT OF LEARNING HAPPENS IN SORT OF FORMAL SIT AND GET LEARNING EXPERIENCES, 10 PERCENT OF LEARNING HAPPENS FROM PEERS OR MENTORS LEARNING FROM OTHERS. BUT 70 PERCENT OF LEARNING HAPPENS ACTUALLY FROM ON THE JOB EXPERIENCES, DOING [00:35:02] YOUR JOB, TAKING ON STRATEGIC ASSIGNMENTS, SPECIAL PROJECTS, ASSIGNMENTS, THINGS LIKE THAT. AND SO THAT PHILOSOPHY APPROACH REALLY INFORMS HOW WE STRUCTURE OUR PROGRAMS AND HOW WILL ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO STRUCTURE YOUR WORK AS WELL. AND THAT CONNECTS, OF COURSE, TO OUR CURRICULUM PYRAMID THAT I SPOKE TO EARLIER. AND ONE OF THE FINAL PIECES I WANT TO SPEAK TO IS HOW WE THINK ABOUT SELECTING DISTRICTS. AS YOU MAY KNOW, OVER 40 DISTRICTS APPLIED TO TO BE PART OF THE HOLDSWORTH PARTNERSHIP THIS YEAR. WE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE FEWER BECAUSE OF COVID AND THE CHALLENGES, BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY MORE THAN WE HAD INITIALLY ANTICIPATED. AND SO, OF COURSE, YOU ALL WERE ONE OF SIX IN OUR CRITERIA IS REALLY WE WERE LOOKING FOR DISTRICTS WHO ARE READY, WHO ARE WILLING AND THEN ABLE TO TAKE ON THIS WORK WITH AN EMPHASIS REALLY ON THE MIDDLE OF DISTRICTS WHO REALLY ARE WILLING AND EXCITED ABOUT TAKING ON THIS WORK. AND I THINK, YOU KNOW, IT WAS VERY CLEAR IN THE SELECTION PROCESS THAT DISTRICT LEADERS AND THE BOARD WERE INCREDIBLY SUPPORTIVE AND EAGER AND WILLING TO TAKE ON THIS WORK, BECAUSE WHILE IT'S CERTAINLY AN INVESTMENT ON HOLDSWORTH. IT IS ALSO A BIG COMMITMENT FROM THE DISTRICT AS WELL, AND SO WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR COMMITMENT AND YOUR INVESTMENT AND WE'RE VERY EXCITED FOR THE FOR THE COMING YEARS. THE FINAL PIECE. OH, I FORGOT ABOUT THAT ANIMATION. THE FINAL PIECE I SPEAK TO IS JUST TO GIVE YOU ALL A HIGH LEVEL PREVIEW OF WHAT THIS FIRST YEAR OF THE PARTNERSHIP WILL LOOK LIKE. SO I SPOKE EARLIER ABOUT THE DISTRICT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. AND DR. LOPEZ AND A NUMBER OF SENIOR LEADERS WILL BE ATTENDING THESE SESSIONS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR AT OUR CAMPUS ON LAKE AUSTIN. AND THEN WE'LL ENGAGE IN SOME SORT OF THREE STREAMS OF WORK AFTER THAT. THE FIRST IS AROUND BASICALLY DOING WHAT WE CALL DEFINING THE CHANGE. AND WE WILL IMPLEMENT WHAT WE CALL THE HOLDSWORTH TALENT ASSESSMENT. AND THAT IS, WE'LL SEND A SURVEY TO STAFF CONDUCT SOME FOCUS GROUPS. REALLY THE PURPOSE OF GETTING A SENSE OF WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATE OF TALENT MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN GARLAND ISD AND THEN DO SOME WORK WITH SENIOR LEADERS LATER IN THE WINTER AND THE SPRING TO THINK ABOUT WHAT ARE SOME PROJECTS WE MIGHT WANT TO TAKE ON TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS IN KEY AREAS. AND THEN WE'LL DO SOME WORK TO CREATE A LEADERSHIP DEFINITION FOR THE OVERALL DISTRICT. AND THIS IS BASICALLY AN EXPANSION OF THE PRINCIPAL PROFILE. WE'LL TAKE THAT BUILD UPON IT AND EXPAND THIS TO ACTUALLY ENCOMPASS ALL STAFF IN GARLAND AND OUTLINE WHAT ARE THE LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL STAFF AND THE LAST PIECE OF WORK IS THIS VACANCY PLANNING CYCLE, WHICH IS AN EXPERIENCE, WILL ENGAGE IN WITH LEADERS TO HELP THEM IDENTIFY WHAT ARE OR HELP THEM FORECAST. WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPAL VACANCIES YOU MIGHT HAVE IN THE COMING YEAR? WHO ARE SOME OF THE HIGH POTENTIAL LEADERS WHO MIGHT BE ABLE TO FILL THOSE THOSE SPOTS? AND THEN WHAT ARE WHAT ARE SOME INVESTMENTS IN TERMS OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT THAT WE COULD MAKE SO THAT THOSE FOLKS ARE READY TO ENTER THE PRINCIPALSHIP ABOUT A YEAR FROM NOW . AND, YOU KNOW, ULTIMATELY OUR WORK I SPOKE TO THIS EARLIER, BUT OUR WORK AT HOLDSWORTH IS GUIDED BY EXCUSE ME, GUIDED BY ONE CORE BELIEF, WHICH IS ONE SIZE FITS ONE. AND SO WHILE WE HAVE AN APPROACH, WHILE WE HAVE SORT OF A THEORY, WE REALLY WANT TO WORK WITH YOU ALL TO CREATE THE SYSTEM AND THE LEADERS THAT ARE GOING TO WORK WELL FOR YOU ALL AND GARLAND USA WITH THAT, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND I'D BE HAPPY TO ENTERTAIN ANY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU. BOARD ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FOR MR. GILSON. THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION, MS. GRIFFIN. YES, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED ABOUT THIS PARTNERSHIP AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE TRANSFORMATION. BUT I HAVE A QUESTION, AND IT MAY BE SOMETHING THAT YOU CANNOT ANSWER HERE, AND I'M OPEN FOR YOU TO GET BACK WITH ME LATER, BUT AS WE TALK ABOUT ALL THIS TRANSFORMATION THAT'S TAKEN PLACE, I'M SURE YOU'VE HEARD OF LONESTAR GOVERNANCE. I'M SURE YOU'VE HEARD OF THE COMMISSIONER'S FRAMEWORK IN TERMS OF HOW WE WORK FOR BASICALLY ACCOUNTABILITY AND IS THERE SOME ADVICE OR DIRECTION THAT WE AS A BOARD NEED TO TRANSFORM IN ORDER TO KEEP IN STEP WITH THE TRANSFORMATIONAL PROCESSES OVER THESE NEXT FIVE YEARS? [00:40:02] AND I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S SOMETHING YOU ALL HAVE EVER THOUGHT ABOUT, BUT WE ARE A TEAM OF EIGHT. CERTAINLY. AND SO I WAS JUST WONDERING, HAVE YOU ALL EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT QUESTION OR WHAT IS IT BECAUSE. I SEE A CONNECTION AND THEN I SEE A DISCONNECTION, BUT YOU ARE ALL THE EXPERT, SO THAT'S MY QUESTION AS ONE MEMBER OF THIS BOARD. YEAH, IT'S A REALLY GOOD THOUGHT. I'LL ADMIT I DON'T THINK I HAVE A GREAT ANSWER FOR YOU. I THINK IT'S A CONVERSATION WE CAN HAVE OVER TIME. ONE THING, AND THIS MAY NOT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION THAT WE HAVE DONE WITH OTHER DISTRICTS IS ENGAGED IN [INAUDIBLE] TRAININGS WHERE WE DIG INTO SOME OF THOSE QUESTIONS AS A BOARD, ALONG WITH, OF COURSE, THE SUPERINTENDENT AS WELL. I THINK WE SEE OURSELVES MORE AS FACILITATORS OF LEARNING. I THINK TO A SPECIFIC QUESTION LIKE THAT. I'M NOT WE DON'T CONSIDER OURSELVES THE EXPERTS, PARTICULARLY AS IT RELATES TO BOARD MATTERS. BUT WE'D BE HAPPY TO FACILITATE SORT OF A LEARNING EXPERIENCE WITH YOU ALL ENGAGING IN CONVERSATION, YOU KNOW, AT A LATER TIME. THANK YOU. MR. GILSON. I'D LIKE TO ASK YOU A QUESTION, IF YOU DON'T MIND, JUST REAL QUICKLY, ON THE 70120/10 APPROACH, THE 70 PERCENT THAT WILL BE THE FOLKS THAT HAVE ALREADY ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM THAT HAD BEEN THERE ALREADY ONE WEEK OF TRAINING, IS THIS CORRECT? THEY'RE GOING TO BE MENTORS BASICALLY TO HELP LEAD THE TRAINING THAT YOU GUYS WILL CONTINUE TO FACILITATE. ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE DISTRICT LEADERS. DISTRICT LEADERS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN DOWN TO AUSTIN? CORRECT, YES. OK, BECAUSE MY QUESTION, I GUESS, WAS I'M LOOKING AT THE PYRAMID AND WHEN IT SAYS DEVELOP PERSONAL LEADERSHIP AND THEN GROW AND EMPOWER OTHERS, WHO RECOGNIZES THOSE STRENGTHS IN THAT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM TO KNOW THAT THOSE FOLKS NEED TO BE COMING FORWARD. SO I PRESUME THAT IT WOULD BE THAT 70 PERCENT THAT ARE ALREADY ENROLLED THAT ARE THAT ARE BEING FACILITATED TO BRING OTHERS UP, IS THAT CORRECT? YEAH. THE 70/20/10 SPEAKS TO SORT OF NOT A PROPORTION AND MAYBE I'M MISUNDERSTANDING 70 PERCENT DOESN'T SPEAK TO A PROPORTION OF PEOPLE. IT SPEAKS TO A PERCENTAGE OF THE CURRICULUM OR THE QUANTITY OF LEARNING. IT SUGGESTS THAT 70 PERCENT OF LEARNING IS SORT OF ON THE JOB EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, OK. 10 PERCENT OF LEARNING IS KIND OF FORMAL SIT AND GET. YOU SIT IN A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSION AND GET THAT LEARNING. 20 PERCENT OF LEARNING MIGHT HAPPEN FROM A MENTOR, A PEER LEARNING FROM OTHERS AROUND YOU. SO I HAVE A BETTER CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROGRAM ITSELF. IT'S MORE OF A PHILOSOPHY OF LEARNING RATHER THAN. THE FOLKS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN THERE FOR THE WEEK, WHICH WE HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING THERE YET. WILL THEY BE THE ONES WHO WILL RECOGNIZE FUTURE ENROLLEES IN THE PROGRAM TO TO DEVELOP OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD? I MEAN, IS IT JUST THAT GROUP ALONE AND HOW DOES THAT ALL COME TOGETHER? YEAH, WELL, SO I THINK I UNDERSTAND YOUR QUESTION. SO A COUPLE OF THOUGHTS. ONE, WE HOPE THAT THESE LEARNINGS AND I KNOW THAT THE SENIOR LEADERS IN GARLAND, DR. RUSSELL, EARLIER TODAY WAS SHARING WITH ME HOW SHE'S ALREADY SHARED SOME OF THE LEARNING FROM THE LAST SESSION WITH OTHERS. AND WE KNOW THAT THAT WILL CONTINUE OVER THE COURSE OF THE TWO YEAR PARTNERSHIP. SO THE LEARNING CERTAINLY WILL BE SPREAD THROUGHOUT. AND THEN THE OTHER PIECE I'LL JUST EMPHASIZE ALONG THAT LINE IS THE CAMPUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. AND THAT WILL ENGAGE YOU HAVE SEVENTY TWO CAMPUSES. SO ABOUT THIRTY FIVE PRINCIPALS AND THEIR LEADERSHIP TEAMS, WHICH IS ANOTHER FOUR OR FIVE PEOPLE PER CAMPUS. AT THAT POINT, YOU'RE LOOKING AT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE IN GARLAND WHO WILL HAVE ENGAGED IN THIS LEARNING OVER TIME. AND THE HIGH LEVEL CURRICULUM STILL FOLLOWS THE SAME PYRAMID FOR THOSE CAMPUS LEADERS AS WELL, THE SAME SORT OF THREE ELEMENTARY CHANGE GROW AND EMPOWER OTHERS AND DEVELOP PERSONAL LEADERSHIP. OBVIOUSLY, THE CONTENT OF THAT IS GOING TO LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT FOR PRINCIPAL THAN IT WOULD FOR, YOU KNOW, THE SUPERINTENDENT. BUT THE HIGH LEVEL PILLARS ARE SORT OF SIMILAR. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? YEAH. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. MR. GLICK. THANK YOU, SIR. THERE'S A TERM THAT'S USED AND I THOUGHT THAT'S WHAT THIS PROGRAM WAS. MAYBE IT'S NOT QUITE WHAT I THOUGHT. SO THE TERM WAS SUCCESSION PLANNING FROM YOUR PRESENTATION? I DON'T THINK THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU DO, IS IT? THAT IS A SORT OF A SUB ELEMENT OF WHAT WE DO. IT IS NOT ENTIRELY WHAT WE DO, BUT IT IS IT IS PART OF THE WORK. WHEN I MENTIONED TALKING ABOUT YEAR, I APOLOGIZE FOR ALL THE CLICKING. WHEN I TALKED ABOUT YEAR ONE OF THE PARTNERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE OF VACANCY PLANNING CYCLE, THAT IS SORT OF SUCCESSION PLANNING. BUT WE THINK ABOUT IT MORE AT CAMPUS, THE CAMPUS LEVEL, NOT AT SORT OF CENTRAL OFFICE [00:45:06] DISTRICT LEVEL. SO AT THE END OF THIS FIVE YEAR PERIOD, WILL WE HAVE LOCATED DESIGNATED THE NEXT ROUND OF PRINCIPALS OR WILL WE HAVE SUPPORTED THE EXISTING PRINCIPLES OR BOTH, I THINK I WOULD I WOULD I DON'T WANT TO GET TOO CONCRETE ON SYSTEMS THAT WE'LL BUILD BECAUSE AGAIN, WE WANT TO WORK CLOSELY WITH THE LEADERS AND TO MAKE SURE WE'RE CREATING THE SYSTEMS THAT THEY WANT TO CREATE. BUT IN GENERAL, WITH MOST OF OUR DISTRICTS, YES, WE DO. WE DO CREATE A SYSTEM BY THE END OF THE FIVE YEARS TO HELP PROJECT PRINCIPAL VACANCIES, IDENTIFY WHO ARE THE POTENTIAL LEADERS TO FILL VACANCIES AND THEN SYSTEMS TO DEVELOP THOSE LEADERS AS WELL. IN TERMS OF SUPPORTING LEADERS, I THINK YOU ALL HAVE SITTING LEADERS LIKE PRINCIPALS. YOU ALL HAVE SOME, MY UNDERSTANDING IS YOU HAVE SOME STRONG SYSTEMS IN PLACE FOR THAT ALREADY IN TERMS OF PRINCIPAL SUPERVISORS, WE'RE HAPPY TO SUPPORT IF IN THAT AS WELL, IF THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU ALL END UP WANTING TO TAKE ON. I THINK THE OTHER SORT OF GLOBAL COMMENT I'LL MAKE IS THERE'S SO MUCH WITHIN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND TALENT MANAGEMENT THAT WE COULD TAKE ON, EVEN THOUGH FIVE YEARS IS A LONG TIME, IT GOES QUICK. AND SO WE WORK WITH LEADERS TO HELP THEM THINK. THINK ABOUT WHAT ARE THE PRIORITY SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES YOU WANT TO CREATE OVER THIS PARTNERSHIP? BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, IDEALLY WE WANT TO CREATE EVERYTHING, BUT THERE'S LIMITED TIME AND AND AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, TO GET INCREASED OUTCOMES. THERE'S PROBABLY JUST A FEW LEVERS IN TERMS OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT THAT YOU NEED TO PULL TO TO GET TO THOSE INCREASED OUTCOMES. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, SIR. MR. SELDERS. THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION. CAN YOU GO BACK TO YOUR ROADMAP SLIDE WHERE YOU TALK ABOUT YEAR ONE OF THE PARTNERSHIP, I BELIEVE THIS IS, WAS THIS IT. SO I WAS JUST CURIOUS, WHEN YOU HAVE DEFINED THE CHANGE AND YOU HAVE ACCESS VISION PLANS AND LAUNCH, IS THAT AS IT RELATES SPECIFICALLY TO BUILDING LEADERSHIP CAPACITY WITHIN THE DISTRICT AND DEFINING THOSE THINGS IN TERMS OF THAT? OR ARE THOSE THINGS ALIGNED TO WHAT THE DISTRICT'S MISSION IN THE VISION IS AS IT RELATES TO WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH AS A DISTRICT WITHIN THE REALM OF WHAT HOLDSWORTH CENTER IS DOING? YEAH, SO IT'S SORT OF BOTH. SO WE GET WE USE THE TALENT ASSESSMENT, WHICH I SPOKE TO EARLY SURVEY FOCUS GROUPS, THINGS LIKE THAT, TO GET A SENSE OF THE CURRENT STATE AND THEN ENGAGE IN CONVERSATIONS WITH SENIOR LEADERS TO FIGURE OUT. BASED ON THAT. BASED ON WHAT EXCUSE ME, WHAT YOU ALL WANT TO BE TRUE. WHAT IS THE SYSTEM WE WANT TO CREATE IN FIVE YEARS? AND THEN WHAT ARE THERE STRUCTURES WE NEED TO BUILD AND PROCESSES WE NEED TO BUILD IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS TO MAKE THAT VISION SORT OF A REALITY. THANK YOU. THERE'S ONE OTHER QUESTION ON YOUR APPROACH SLIDE WHERE YOU HAVE THE PYRAMID. YOU TALK ABOUT STRONG LEADERS, STRONGER SYSTEMS AND STRONGER RESULTS. YES. AS IT RELATES TO PRODUCING EXCELLENT AND EQUITABLE STUDENT OUTCOMES WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE, LIKE ON THE COURT? HOW DOES THAT SHOW UP IN TERMS OF WHEN WE'RE DONE WITH THIS PROCESS OR AS WE'RE GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS? WHAT IMPROVEMENTS SHOULD WE EXPECT TO SEE? OR WHAT HAVE SOME OTHER DISTRICTS SEEN IN TERMS OF YOUR EXPERIENCES WORKING WITH THEM THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS, IN TERMS SPECIFICALLY OF STUDENT OUTCOME IMPROVEMENT? YEAH, I'LL SPEAK TO A COUPLE OF PIECES. ONE, I'LL JUST SORT OF THE CAVEAT. WE'RE STILL YOUNG AS AN ORGANIZATION. I'VE BEEN WITH HOLDSWORTH PRETTY MUCH SINCE WE STARTED, AND THAT'S ONLY BEEN FOUR YEARS. SO, YOU KNOW, THIS IS LONG TERM WORK AND SEEING THAT LONG TERM SUSTAINABLE CHANGE IS GOING TO TAKE TIME. THAT BEING SAID, WE OFTENTIMES SEE MOST IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENT IN OUR CAMPUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. I MENTIONED EARLIER THAT THE CAMPUSES IN THAT PROGRAM WILL IDENTIFY A PROBLEM OF PRACTICE RELATED TO STUDENT LEARNING AND THEN SORT OF CREATE AND IMPLEMENT A PLAN TO IMPROVE ON THAT OVER THE TWO YEARS THAT THEY'RE IN THAT PROGRAM. AND WE'VE SEEN SOME REALLY DRAMATIC AND IMMEDIATE LEARNINGS OR EXCUSE ME, GAINS IN LEARNING ON THOSE CAMPUSES RELATED TO THOSE PROBLEMS OF PRACTICE. SO THAT'S ONE PIECE, I'LL SAY. AND THEN THE OTHER PIECE THAT WE WE DO THINK ABOUT IS NOT I THINK BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, I'M SURE YOU ALL HAVE THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS IS THE ON SORT OF THE GRADE SYSTEM, THE IN TERMS OF TEA ACCOUNTABILITY, WE HAVE SEEN SOME IMPROVEMENTS THERE, PARTICULARLY FOR CAMPUSES THAT ARE IN THE IN THE CAMPUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. I THINK, YOU KNOW, LARGE SCALE DISTRICT CHANGE. I HESITATE TO SAY, YOU KNOW, WE'VE REACHED THE MOUNTAINTOP BECAUSE, AGAIN, YOU KNOW, THIS WORK TAKES TIME AND WE'RE STILL PRETTY YOUNG. I THINK WE HAVE A LOT OF PROMISING SIGNS, BUT I HESITATE TO, YOU KNOW, PLANT MY FLAG TOO [00:50:01] DEEPLY. SO THE OUTCOMES THAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, A MORE GLOBAL IN NATURE, LIKE, YOU KNOW, WE'VE HAD THE DISTRICTS THAT WE'VE WORKED WITH HAVE GONE THROUGH PROGRAM AND THEY ARE IN YEAR FOUR AND THEY'VE SEEN IMPROVEMENT IN YOU KNOW, THIRD GRADE READING SCORES OR SOMETHING ALONG THOSE LINES IS THAT? I THINK WE HAVE SOME OF THAT DATA. I DON'T HAVE IT OFF THE TOP. I HAD I COULD GO BACK AND GET THAT FOR YOU. I DO THINK WE HAVE SOME INDICATORS ALONG THOSE LINES THAT ARE REALLY ENCOURAGING, BUT OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, I DON'T HAVE THAT. BUT I COULD GO BACK AND GET THAT. YEAH, I WOULD APPRECIATE THAT. THANK YOU. YEAH, JUST ONE OTHER. ANYBODY ELSE? JUST ONE OTHER QUESTION I HAD WITH RESPECT TO THE STAFF THAT ENROLLS FIVE YEAR PROGRAM. IF THERE'S TURNOVER WITHIN THAT STAFF, IS THERE A WAY TO BRING IN THE NEW PEOPLE TO CATCH UP OR ARE THEY OUT UNTIL THE NEXT TRAUNCH OR HOW DOES THAT WORK? YEAH, IT HAPPENS. WE EXPERIENCED THAT QUITE A BIT THESE PAST FEW YEARS. WE TRY AND KEEP THE CAMPUS TEAMS IN PLACE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. TURNOVER DOES HAPPEN, YOU KNOW, AND SO WE TRY AND BE THOUGHTFUL ABOUT BRINGING PEOPLE IN, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES BRINGING PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE IS CHALLENGING AS YOU WANT TO CREATE THAT COHESIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. BUT WE DO TRY AND KEEP THE CAMPUS TEAMS INTACT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU. OK, DR. LOPEZ. WOW. OK. ALL RIGHT, HERE WE GO. FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR COMING UP AND MAKING THE TRIP. I DO WANT TO LET THE BOARD KNOW THAT WE WILL BE GIVING PERIODIC UPDATES TO THE BOARD ON THE PROGRESS AND THE LEARNINGS AND EVERYTHING THAT'S TRANSPIRING. ONE OF THE ONE OF THIS THIS JOURNEY, WE DON'T WANT TO BE DONE IN ISOLATION. WE WANT AS MANY PEOPLE TO BE PART OF IT AND EXPERIENCE IT AS POSSIBLE. SO PART OF WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS AND WE KEEP REFERRING TO IT THIS YEAR, THE GISD EFFECT, WHICH IS THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT, WE CAN MULTIPLY GOOD THINGS. AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE LEARNED WHERE THE FROM [INAUDIBLE] WAS THE FIVE DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES OF GREAT LEADERSHIP. AND, YOU KNOW, ONE IS PURPOSE. OTHER IS WISDOM, LOVE. YOU KNOW, WE GO INTO GROWTH AND THEN, OF COURSE, OUR PERSONAL SELF ACTUALIZATION. AND THE THING IS, IS THIS IS THAT WHEN WE GIVE OUR UPDATES, WE'LL BE ABLE TO HOPEFULLY AFFORD MAYBE SOME OF THE THE CHALLENGES AND THE VISIONS THAT WE'RE DOING. AND AS WE PROGRESS, WE CAN SHARE THE VISIONS THAT EACH TEAM HAS FOR THEMSELVES BECAUSE EVERY SCHOOL IS UNIQUE. AND I THINK WE ALL RECOGNIZE WE HAVE 72 SCHOOLS IN ONE DISTRICT, BUT EACH OF THEM WILL HAVE THEIR OWN PERSONAL THINGS THAT THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE. AND AND I THINK WHEN YOU GO AT IT AS A TEAM AND A TEAM APPROACH, IT HAS SO MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANCE IN OWNERSHIP. SO WE WILL BE GOING ON THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR COMING UP. BOARD WE NOW GO TO ITEM D, WHICH IS AN INTRODUCTION OF DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS. [IV.D. Introduction of District Administrators - Dr. Gradyne E. Brown ] DR. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, AND THOSE ARE OUR NEW ADMINISTRATORS FOR THIS EVENING. THANK YOU, DR. BROWN. LET'S GO ON TO ITEM NUMBER FIVE DISCUSSION ITEMS, TRUSTEES' REPORT IS NUMBER A. [V.A. Trustees' Report ] TRUSTEES WILL DISCUSS ATTENDANCE AT A RECENT DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY EVENTS ANNOUNCEMENT OF UPCOMING DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY EVENTS, RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY DISTRICT STAFF AND STUDENTS AND RECOGNITION OF NEW PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL ACTIVITIES. WE'LL START TO MY RIGHT WITH THE MR. GLICK. THANK YOU, SIR. SO SIX OF US RECENTLY WERE IN FORT WORTH FOR SOME LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE HAVING LUNCH. MR. MILLER AND DR. LOPEZ WOULD JOIN US LATER THAT EVENING FOR DINNER. AND AT ONE POINT DURING THE LUNCH, MR. JOHNSON SAID, WHAT IS THIS THING ON OUR PLATE. NOW, I THOUGHT IT WAS MASHED POTATOES. SOMEBODY ELSE THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ASPARAGUS. SOMEBODY ELSE THOUGHT IT COULD HAVE BEEN SOME OTHER VEGETABLE, MAYBE CAULIFLOWER. SO WE ASKED A SERVER WHO CHECKED AND SAID IT WAS GRITS. NOW THERE'S A FAMOUS MOVIE CALLED MY COUSIN VINNY. IF YOU'VE EVER SEEN IT. AND THERE'S A SCENE WHERE VINNY, WHO'S A BRONX, BROOKLYN ATTORNEY, I'M A BRONX ATTORNEY, IS TRYING A CASE FOR THE FIRST TIME DOWN IN ALABAMA. AND HE GOES TO BREAKFAST AND THEY SERVE HIM A PLATE AND HE SAYS, WHAT IS THIS? [01:05:01] AND THE SERVICES. HAVEN'T YOU EVER HEARD OF GRITS? AND HE SAYS, I'VE HEARD OF GRITS. I'VE NEVER SEEN A GRIT. WELL, NOW, AFTER THIRTY NINE YEARS AND EIGHT MONTHS IN TEXAS, I'VE NOT ONLY SEEN A GRIT, BUT I'VE NOW EATEN A GRIT OK. I ALSO ATTENDED A SESSION CALLED GOVERNANCE IQ. NOW YOU KIND OF THINK AFTER DOING THIS FOR QUITE A WHILE, YOU KNOW WHAT, GOVERNANCES IS BUT I FIGURED LET'S SEE IF THERE'S SOMETHING NEW GOING ON IN TERMS OF GOVERNANCE. BUT NEVERTHELESS, THESE ARE MY QUOTES FROM WHAT GOVERNANCE IS NOW SET HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT LEARNING. AND I CERTAINLY BELIEVE WE DO THIS. WE HAD A WHOLE SESSION ON IT LAST TUESDAY. WE TALKED ABOUT SETTING GOALS AND EVERY ONE OF THEM HAS HIGH EXPECTATIONS TO HOLD THE DISTRICT ACCOUNTABLE FOR STUDENT LEARNING. NOW, YOU SAY IS SEVEN PEOPLE UP HERE GOVERNING THE DISTRICT. HOW DO YOU DO THAT? AND THE NEXT POINT IS REAL SIMPLE. THE SUPERINTENDENT GOALS MUST BE FOCUSED ON STUDENT OUTCOMES AND THOSE OUTCOMES MOST MUST BE MEASURABLE. SO NOTHING HAS REALLY CHANGED OVER TIME. IT'S STILL THE SAME. AND I BELIEVE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE SITTING UP HERE BELIEVE IN. FOR THE SEVENTH SUCCESSIVE YEAR WE HAVE GIVEN OUT TO OUR PRE-K, K, FIRST, AND THIS TIME FOR THE FIRST TIME, OUR SECOND GRADERS, OUR SUMMER READING PACKETS. WE DISTRIBUTED ELEVEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE PACKETS THIS YEAR. AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK DR. AGUILAR AND MR ARMSTRONG FOR MEETING WITH ME AND DISCUSSING THIS PROGRAM. IT'S A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL READING PROGRAM. EACH STUDENT GETS FIVE BOOKS. I'LL TALK ABOUT THAT IN A MINUTE. NOW, I LEARNED SOMETHING INTERESTING TODAY. FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE LIBRARIANS AND A COMMITTEE GET TOGETHER AND CHOOSE EIGHT BOOKS, EIGHT FOR EACH GRADE SO THAT WOULD BE PRE-K, K, ONE AND TWO, EIGHT FOR EACH OF THE DIFFERENT CLASSES. THE KIDS THEN ON THEIR OWN SELECT FIVE OF THE EIGHT. SO EACH OF THE ELEVEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE PACKETS ARE CUSTOM MADE FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL STUDENT. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT TILL TODAY, SO THAT'S PRETTY INCREDIBLE. THERE'S A LETTER IN THERE FROM DR. LOPEZ. I'LL READ THAT IN A MINUTE. THE BOOKS ARE IN ENGLISH, SPANISH OR VIETNAMESE. THERE'S ALSO A MAP OF ALL THE LIBRARIES IN OUR THREE CITIES. THERE'S AN INSTRUCTION SHEET IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGE FOR THE PARENTS. AND I'D LIKE TO JUST QUICKLY READ DR. LOPEZ'S WONDERFUL LETTER THAT ACCOMPANIED EACH OF THESE ELEVEN THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE PACKETS. TO REACH THEIR FULL ACADEMIC POTENTIAL. STUDENTS NEED A STRONG FOUNDATION OF READING AND WRITING. KNOW THAT READING OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM IS CRITICAL FOR MAINTAINING AND EXPANDING A CHILD'S LITERACY SKILLS, ESPECIALLY OVER THE EXTENDED SUMMER BREAK. IN FACT, RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT STUDENTS SHOULD SPEND A MINIMUM OF 20 MINUTES A DAY READING OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL, BOTH DURING THE SUMMER AND THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. IN AN EFFORT TO HELP ALL OF OUR GARLAND ISD STUDENTS REACH READING GOALS AT OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL. AND AGAIN, THAT'S ONE OF OUR MAIN GOALS. IT'S ACTUALLY OUR FIRST GOAL OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS I AM PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE CONTINUATION OF OUR SUMMER READING PROGRAM. GOALS OF THIS PROGRAM, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO BECOME LIFELONG READERS. TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE READING. CONNECT STUDENTS AND FAMILY WITH LOCAL LIBRARIES, EXPOSE STUDENTS TO DIFFERENT TYPE OF AUTHORS AND CHARACTERS, HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP READING AND WRITING SKILLS THROUGH DIFFERENT TYPES OF READING EXPERIENCES. AND I JUST PICK ONE OF THE DIFFERENT PACKETS THE BOOKS ARE. I LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN TO BE ONE IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE. I LIKE YOUR NUTTONS. BRODY BEAR GOES FISHING. BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP. THE ELEPHANT IN MY ROOM AND THE TRAGIC TALE OF MR. MUFFS. I THINK I PRONOUNCE THAT CORRECTLY. AND AGAIN, THESE COME WITH A NICE LITTLE PACKET TO PUT THE BOOKS IN FROM SCHOLASTIC, WHO'S ONE OF OUR PARTNER. AND AGAIN, AS SOMEONE WHO LOVES TO READ READING FOREVER, CONTINUE READING MANY, MANY BOOKS PER YEAR. I LOVE THE FEEL THE TOUCH OF A REAL BOOK. I KNOW WE HAVE OTHER PROGRAMS ONLINE, BUT THE ABILITY TO TOUCH AND FEEL A BOOK AND READ IT AND HAVE YOUR PARENT USE THESE GUIDELINES THAT ACCOMPANY AND SIT THERE AND ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK TOGETHER, I THINK IS ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL BONDING EXPERIENCES. AND AGAIN, PRE K AND THIS YEAR INCLUDING GRADE TWO. SO THANK YOU FOR THE FAMILY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DEPARTMENT AND PARTNERING WITH SCHOLASTIC. ONE OTHER QUICK THING. [01:10:03] I DID ATTEND THE SECURITY COMMITTEE MEETING THIS PAST WEEK. I'M NOT A MEMBER, BUT I'M SURE THE OTHER TWO PEOPLE WHO DID ATTEND WILL TALK FURTHER ABOUT IT. ONE THING THAT I LEARNED THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING IS NOT ONLY DO WE ALL DO ALL THE DRILLS, BUT WE ALSO SOMETHING I HAD NEVER KNOWN BECAUSE WE HAVE RAILROAD TRACKS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO MANY OF OUR SCHOOLS. WE ALSO DO HAZMAT TESTING. SO IF THERE IS A SPILL ON THE TRACKS, CHEMICAL SPILL AND WE HAVE CHEMICALS, WE KNOW WE'RE A BIG MANUFACTURING AREA HERE, CHEMICALS ON TRAINS. WE ARE PREPARED IN CASE OF THAT TYPE OF SPILL WITH HAZMAT TRAINING AND MAYBE MR. MILLER OR MS. STANLEY WILL TALK FURTHER ABOUT THAT. THANK YOU, SIR. MS. GRIFFIN. THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. THE FIRST THING I'D LIKE TO SAY IS WELCOME BACK STAFF. YOU ARE PART OF THE GISD EFFECT. AND I HEARD OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS THAT THERE HAS BEEN AWARD WINNING PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CLASSES HELD. SO STAFF, WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOU. AND WE ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR STUDENTS AND PARENTS. WE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU ON AUGUST 2ND. WE ARE WAITING. WE ARE PREPARED AND WE'RE READY TO GO. WE'RE READY TO START LEARNING AGAIN, FACE TO FACE. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF ATTENDING THE ELL THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THEIR GUEST SPEAKER. KEYNOTE SPEAKER WAS DR. MICHELLE [INAUDIBLE]. SHE HAS A DIFFICULT LAST NAME. AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT SHE TALKED ABOUT IN ADDRESSING ELL IS THAT WE HAVE TO CONSTRUCT A CULTURE OF CARE. AND FOR THE REST OF THE DAY, THERE WAS SESSIONS. SHE WAS NOT THE ONLY PRESENTER, BUT SHE WAS THE KEYNOTE PRESENTER AND HELD SOME SESSIONS HERSELF. SHE TALKED ABOUT HOW WE BUILD THESE RELATIONSHIPS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RELATIONSHIPS. I WAS DELIGHTED TO SEE THE EXCITEMENT ON THE FACES OF THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT WASN'T IN ATTENDANCE AT THAT SESSION, AND THAT WAS HELD AT THE GILBREATH-REED CAREER AND TECH CENTER. THEN I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND SOMETHING THAT I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT, AND I'M HOPING THAT WE CAN HAVE SEVERAL OF THESE THROUGHOUT THIS UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR. IT WAS THE DISTRICT WIDE PARENTAL AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT SEMINAR THAT WAS HELD AT LAO'S. IT WAS GOOD TO SEE OUR PARENTS AND OUR COMMUNITIES BACK IN ONE OF OUR SCHOOLS. THERE WAS A FOOD TRUCK IN THE FRONT. THERE WERE A LOT OF SNACKS AND ACTIVITIES. BUT THE TOPICS THAT WERE BEING DISCUSSED, THERE WAS IMMIGRATION, HEALTHY COOKING. I MEAN, I ACTUALLY HAD THE FLATBREAD THAT THEY HAD GIVEN A COOKING DEMONSTRATION CLASS ON. THEY TALKED ABOUT ACADEMIC PATHWAYS. HOW DO YOU ADVOCATE FOR CHILDREN? AND A VERY SENSITIVE TOPIC THAT THE BOARD MEMBERS UNDERSTAND BECAUSE IT'S REQUIRED TRAINING FOR US. THEY STARTED TALKING ABOUT TEEN TRAFFICKING AND THE PRESENTER CAME FROM ONE OF THE ADVOCATES CENTERS WITHIN THE DALLAS FORT WORTH AREA. SO I'D LIKE TO GIVE A ROUND OF THANK YOU. HATS OFF TO THOSE TWO DEPARTMENTS THAT PUT ON THESE CONFERENCES. VERY NOTEWORTHY, VERY RELEVANT AND VERY ACCURATE INFORMATION. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. I THINK OUR PARENTS ARE READY TO COME BACK. THEY WERE EXCITED OVER AT LAO'S. THANK YOU. MR. BEACH. YES, THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. FIRST OF ALL, I WAS OUT LAST TUESDAY VIRTUALLY, AND I DIDN'T GET TO WISH MECHELLE HOGAN, OUR BOARD SERVICE CLERK, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SATURDAY. AND WANT TO WISH HER HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I KNOW THAT EVERYBODY ELSE PROBABLY DID, BUT I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT I RECOGNIZED HER TODAY. MECHELLE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY. ALSO, IN COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THE FACILITY AND MAINTENANCE AWARD CEREMONY AT NAAMAN FOREST HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE THEY BROUGHT ALL THE CUSTODIAL MAINTENANCE, [01:15:02] EVERYBODY TOGETHER IN ONE LOCATION AT NAAMAN FOR SERVICE AWARD PINS. AND SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT RECEIVED THOSE PINS, WE WERE ABLE TO HAND THEM OUT AND GIVE FIST PUMPS TO THEM. MS. GRIFFIN AND OTHER BOARD MEMBERS SHOWED THAT DAY. IT WAS A REALLY GREAT VENUE AND IT WAS PUT ON VERY, VERY WELL. AND WE HAVE ONE CUSTODIAN THAT'S BEEN IN THE DISTRICT FOR FORTY TWO YEARS. SO WE HAVE PEOPLE THAT ARE DEDICATED TO THIS DISTRICT AND TRYING TO MAKE THE GROUNDS, THE BUILDINGS, THINGS READY TO GO. AND I MEAN, THE HOURS THAT THEY SPEND, WE DON'T REALLY RECOGNIZE. BUT THEY PUT IN THE HOURS AND I WANT TO THANK THEM FOR INVITING US TO COME OUT TO THE FACILITIES AND THE MAINTENANCE AWARD CEREMONY. THANK YOU. MR. GONZALEZ IS ALSO ABLE TO ATTEND THE ATHLETIC LUNCHEON AT SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL. HER NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, MR. GRIFFIN, RON GRIFFIN, DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB AND SHERESE LIGHTFOOT GAVE A GOOD PRESENTATION ALSO. BUT I ALSO WANT TO WELCOME OUR NEW ASSISTANT AD MIKE WILLIAMS FROM EL PASO, WHO MIKE HAS MOVED INTO DOWNTOWN GARLAND WITH HIS FAMILY. AND I'VE MET WITH MIKE A COUPLE OF TIMES SINCE THEN, AND HE IS EXCITED AS CAN BE, TO ASSIST RON. SO I WANT TO WELCOME HIM TO GARLAND USA. AND ALSO I WANT TO PUT A SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE COACHES. WHILE THE MEETING WAS BEING TAKING PLACE AND I LOOKED AROUND THE ROOM AND A LOT OF THOSE KIDS, SOME OF THEM I COACHED IN, SOME OF THEM I HAVE COACHED AND AND I KNEW THEM PERSONALLY. AND SO I WAS SITTING THERE AND I WAS THINKING, BOY, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU GET THE TITLE OF COACH, YOUR NAME CHANGES. YOU KNOW, A LOT OF KIDS DON'T EVEN REMEMBER YOUR LAST NAME AFTER YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS, BUT THEY ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU WERE A COACH. AND THE IMPACT THAT THESE COACHES HAVE ON THE STUDENTS IN GISD AND I'M TALKING TO FULL CAFETERIA AT SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL WILL GO WITH YOU FOREVER. THE IMPACT THAT YOU HAVE, REMEMBER, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A COACH, CARRY IT WITH HIGH ESTEEM. AND I APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT YOU GUYS DO AND THE EFFORT YOU'RE PUTTING OUT THERE RIGHT NOW IN THE HEAT AND GETTING READY. I'M GETTING READY FOR FOOTBALL SEASON TO START. WELL, AS MS. GRIFFIN MENTIONED, SCHOOL STARTS AUGUST THE 2ND. AND I WANT TO MAKE ONE COMMENT. AND IT'S PEOPLE, NOT PROGRAMS THAT DETERMINE THE QUALITY OF A SCHOOL. TEACHERS. YOU'RE THE BEST IN GISD. AND THAT'S WHY WE HAVE PEOPLE SEEK US OUT TO WANT TO COME TO WORK HERE. I KNOW THAT THERE ARE SOME THAT HAVE LEFT AND WE KNOW THERE SOME HAVE COME BACK. FOLKS I'M GOING TO TELL YOU THIS IS THE PLACE YOU WANT TO BE. AND WE'RE GOING TO SHOW YOU THIS IS THE PLACE YOU WANT TO BE. AND I HOPE THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU HAVE AN OUTSTANDING SCHOOL YEAR BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE AN OUTSTANDING SCHOOL YEAR IN GARLAND, USA. THANK YOU. GREAT, MR. JOHNSON. I WON'T TAKE UP TOO MUCH BECAUSE LARRY ALREADY DESCRIBED ALL THE GREAT THINGS THAT HAPPENED AT SLI, INCLUDING THE GRITS. I HAVE HAD GRITS BEFORE, UNLIKE LARRY, BUT THOSE WERE NOT PARTICULARLY GOOD GRITS, I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT. SO IT WASN'T OPEN AND OBVIOUS AS TO WHAT IT WAS, BUT, YOU KNOW, RUBBER CHICKEN BANQUET FOOD KIND OF THING. BUT NO WE HAD A GREAT TIME AND AT SLI WE LEARNED A LOT. I FEEL LIKE THIS YEAR THEY FOCUSED A LOT MORE ON SECURITY ISSUES THAN THEY HAVE IN THE PAST, PROBABLY BECAUSE THE PANDEMIC ISSUES AND LEARNING LOSS AND I HAD FOUND THOSE PARTICULAR SEMINARS TO BE VERY HELPFUL MOVING INTO THIS YEAR. AND SO I REALLY APPRECIATE TASB FOR PUTTING ON A ROBUST I WAS I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT IN A KIND OF PANDEMIC ERA SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, BUT IT WAS VERY ROBUST PROGRAM, VERY WELL ATTENDED. SO I THANK THEM FOR THAT. I THINK WE DID A GREAT JOB. AND AS A DISTRICT, WE ALL THAT I THINK EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US ATTENDED EITHER IN SAN ANTONIO OR IN FORT WORTH, WHICH IS WHICH IS GOOD. WE'RE MOVING FORWARD FOR THE NEXT YEAR. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. I'VE GOT THREE GUYS AT HOME THAT AREN'T. THEY THINK THE SUMMER JUST STARTED AND SO IT'S OVER. SO AND BUT I DO THINK THAT WE'RE GETTING READY TO START A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR. IT'S GOING TO BE THE YEAR OF RECOVERY, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. THANK YOU. MS. STANLEY, THANK YOU, SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE START OF SCHOOL, MY NEIGHBORHOOD OF KIDS, THEY'RE ALL GIRLS AND THEY'RE VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO THE START OF SCHOOL. I THINK THAT'S THE MAIN DIFFERENCE RIGHT THERE. I ACTUALLY SEVERAL OF US GOT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SECOND ANNUAL DALLAS ASIAN-AMERICAN SOCCER TOURNAMENT THAT TOOK PLACE IN JULY. [01:20:01] WE GOT TO BE THERE FOR THE OPENING CEREMONIES AND THE CLOSING CEREMONIES. OVER THE YEARS HERE IN GARLAND I'VE GOTTEN TO PARTICIPATE WITH THE VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY. AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU, THAT'S ONE OF THE COMMUNITIES THAT I FIND THAT BLENDS THEIR CULTURE WITH THE AMERICAN DREAM LIKE I IT JUST ALWAYS JUST IS AMAZING TO ME HOW THEY ARE ABLE TO BLEND IT. IT'S IT'S ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, THE AMERICAN FLAG AND THE VIETNAMESE FLAG. AND IT'S JUST TRULY A FUN, FUN EXPERIENCE. AND SO I ALWAYS LOVE DOING THAT. SO AND THERE'LL BE A THIRD ANNUAL NEXT JULY RIGHT SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HEAT, WHICH IS GREAT IN TEXAS. YEAH. AND THEN I DID GET TO ATTEND ALSO THE MAINTENANCE AND FACILITY SERVICE AWARDS. AND IT'S ALWAYS AMAZING TO ME HOW SMALL GARLAND IS WITH ITS TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY FOUR THOUSAND PEOPLE THAT YOU GET TO SEE THE PEOPLE THAT YOU SEE IN SCHOOLS AND FROM HOME DEPOT AND YOUR FIST PUMPING THEM WITH THEIR 20 YEAR PINS. SO THEY JUST DO AN AMAZING JOB AND IT'S JUST HUMBLING. I DID ATTEND THE SECURITY AND SAFETY MEETING, BUT UNFORTUNATELY ABOUT THE ONLY THING THAT I TOOK FROM IT BEING NEW WAS THAT IT'S AMAZING HOW AMAZING OUR EMPLOYEES ARE, NOT ONLY OUR TEACHERS, BUT OUR MAINTENANCE. THE WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT HOW IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, WE COULDN'T DO ANYTHING TO SAVE US FROM THE STORMS. RIGHT. BUT GISD, OUR MAINTENANCE CREWS TOOK THE TIME TO DO SO MUCH PRE MAINTENANCE, TO BE ABLE TO SAVE US, TO BE ABLE TO NOT ONLY SAVE MONEY, BE ABLE TO TO MINIMIZE THE DAMAGE WITH ALL THE WORK THAT THEY DID SO THAT WE COULD COME BACK IN AND USE OUR OUR BUILDINGS. AND THAT'S THAT JUST TELLS YOU HOW MUCH THEY CARE, NOT ONLY ABOUT THEIR JOBS, BUT HOW MUCH THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR COMMUNITIES. AND IT'S JUST I LOVE GARLAND AND AND I LOVE ROWLETT AND SACHSE, TOO. AND THEN I ALSO PARTICIPATED WITH THE BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACK GIVEAWAY AT THE BRADFORD REC CENTER THAT WAS SPONSORED BY IN AND OUT BURGER. I THINK IT WAS OUR ENGAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THAT WAS PUTTING IT THROUGH. THEY GAVE AWAY THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY BACKPACKS. THEY HAD THE POOL OPEN AND THEY HAD MUSIC GOING AND IN AND OUT BURGERS. AND IT WAS IT WAS REALLY FUN TO TO SEE THEY HAD ALL THE DIFFERENT SPORTS COMMUNITIES THERE SIGNING PEOPLE UP AND HANDING OUT THEIR THEIR FLIERS FOR THAT. AND I THINK THAT WAS IT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. MR. SELDERS. THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. I JUST WANT TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION TO EVERYONE IN THE DISTRICT FOR THE QUICK TURNAROUND, YOU KNOW, AS SOME OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS HAVE ALREADY SHARED, IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED THE WORK THAT YOU DO. AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE'S A HEAVY LIFT. I MEAN, WE ASKED A LOT OF YOU LAST YEAR, ESPECIALLY GOING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC. AND, YOU KNOW, WITH THE VARIATIONS THAT ARE OUT THERE NOW, I DON'T KNOW THAT WE'RE NECESSARILY OUT OF THE WATER YET, BUT IT'S GOING TO BE VERY INTERESTING COMING BACK. AND I KNOW WE ANTICIPATE AND LOOK FORWARD TO COMING BACK. SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, IT'S MY PRAYER THAT WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE APPROPRIATE SUPPORT, RESOURCES, TOOLS SO THAT, YOU KNOW, ALL OF OUR CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS, COUNSELORS, TEACHERS, PARENTS, STUDENTS HAVE WHAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL AND A GREAT, GREAT SCHOOL YEAR. SO HATS OFF TO YOU GUYS AND LOOKING FORWARD TO TO THIS YEAR. COMING UP, AS WAS ALSO SHARED ABOUT SLI, I WAS ABLE TO GO EARLY ON WEDNESDAY AND ATTEND A POVERTY SIMULATION. AND IT'S A REALLY INTERESTING EXERCISE WHERE TRUSTEES AND THE SUPERINTENDENTS AND VARIOUS INDIVIDUALS WERE GIVEN DIFFERENT POVERTY SCENARIOS. AND YOU HAD TO TRY TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS AND GET THINGS DONE FOR, YOU KNOW, YOUR FAMILY, IN MY CASE, I WAS A 21 YEAR OLD COLLEGE STUDENT WHOSE FATHER HAD BEEN SENTENCED TO JAIL. AND I HAD TWO 13 YEAR OLD TWIN SISTERS AND A THREE YEAR OLD BROTHER AND TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT MY SIBLINGS GOT TO SCHOOL AND THEN PAY RENT AND TAKE CARE OF ALL OF THE HOUSE CHALLENGES AND MANAGE A HOUSEHOLD EVEN WHILE GOING TO COLLEGE. [01:25:03] IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING HOW YOUR MIND SHIFTS. AND IT'S NOT A REAL SCENARIO FOR ME PERSONALLY, BUT IT WAS JUST REALLY INTERESTING TO ENGAGE WITH OTHER PEOPLE THAT WERE GOING THROUGH THAT SIMULATION TO JUST GET AN IDEA OR MAYBE EVEN A SMALL GLIMPSE OF WHAT THAT MIGHT BE LIKE FOR, YOU KNOW, STUDENTS OR FAMILIES THAT ARE EXPERIENCING PERVERSE POVERTY SITUATIONS AND HOW THEY'RE HAVING TO NAVIGATE VARIOUS SYSTEMS TO BE ABLE TO TO MOVE FORWARD. SO IT GAVE ME A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE AND I WAS REALLY APPRECIATIVE OF HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO THROUGH THAT. I ALSO HAD A CHANCE TO ATTEND SEVERAL OF THE SESSIONS THAT SOME OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS TALKED ABOUT. BUT I ALSO ATTENDED ONE THAT WAS DONE AND PRESENTED BY MS. GRIFFIN AND MS. GILMORE AS IT RELATES TO RESULTS DRIVEN PK 16 PARTNERSHIP MODEL GARLAND ISD CONNECTS WITH TEXAS A&M COMMERCE. AND IF YOU FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT EVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH MS. GRIFFIN AND MS. GILMORE PRESENT, IT WAS A TREAT. I CAN'T TELL YOU THAT THE LEVEL OF RESPONSE AND HOW EXCITED THE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE IN ATTENDANCE WERE TO ASK QUESTIONS AND GET MORE INFORMATION FROM THEM AFTERWARDS. AND SO REALLY APPRECIATE MS. GRIFFIN THE INFORMATION THAT YOU GUYS PROVIDED. I ALSO LIKE MS. STANLEY TALKED ABOUT THE VIETNAMESE SOCCER TOURNAMENT SORT OF KICKOFF DINNER. I DID MAKE IT OUT TO THE FIELD, BUT I DIDN'T MAKE IT OUT THERE IN TIME FOR THE ACTUAL OPENING CEREMONIES. BUT IT WAS JUST AMAZING JUST TO KIND OF SEE ALL OF THE DIFFERENT AND THE DIFFERENT PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE IN SUPPORT OF THAT EVENT. AND MY HAT GOES OFF TO MS. JENNIFER NGUYEN SHE'S BEEN A PILLAR IN THE VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY AND THE GARLAND COMMUNITY GARLAND ISD COMMUNITY. AND SHE DID AN AMAZING JOB WITH HER TEAM TO PUT ON A FANTASTIC EVENT. SPEAKING OF EVENTS, I KNOW THAT WE HAD A RECENT EVENT AT THE CULWELL CENTER. I THINK IT WAS WRESTLING. IT WAS REALLY INTERESTING. AND MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT IT WAS AMAZING. IT WAS VERY WELL ATTENDED. I THINK IT HAD A LOT OF VIEWERS VIA TELEVISION OR HOWEVER THEY STREAMED IT. SO MY HAT GOES OFF TO MR. WILBORN AND HIS TEAM FOR ALWAYS PULLING OFF GREAT EVENTS. AND I HEAR THAT THERE'S ANOTHER ROSTER OF OTHER EVENTS THAT ARE COMING TO THE TRIPLE C AND SO I DON'T EXPECT ANY LESS. I KNOW THAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO A FANTASTIC JOB OF PULLING OFF OF THOSE EVENTS. NORTH TEXAS AREA ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BOARDS, WE JUST HAD OUR MEETING AND WE TALKED ABOUT PROGRAMS THAT ARE GOING TO BE COMING UP FOR THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR. AND SO I'M ENCOURAGING MY FELLOW TRUSTEES TO KEEP WATCH OUT FOR THOSE PROGRAMS THAT ARE GOING TO BE ALL FOR THE. WE GOT A LOT OF GREAT RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK DURING THE PANDEMIC WHEN WE HAD TO DO ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS VIRTUALLY. IT GAVE TRUSTEES WHO WOULD NOT NECESSARILY BE ABLE TO ATTEND IN PERSON AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT AND HAVE ACCESS TO THE PROGRAMS THAT WERE OFFERED THIS YEAR. THE 21-22 PROGRAMS WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. SO I ENCOURAGE YOU GUYS TO ATTEND. AND THAT'S ALL. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. AND THANK YOU BOARD FOR THE GREAT INVOLVEMENT THAT YOU HAVE WITH THE STUDENTS OF OUR DISTRICT, THE EVENTS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF EVERYTHING YOU DO. AS YOU KNOW, WE ALL ARE INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT WAYS AND DIFFERENT THINGS. AND THANK YOU FOR THAT BECAUSE IT DOES MAKE AN IMPACT ON THOSE THOSE IMPORTANT STUDENTS AND STAFF THAT WE SUPPORT TO ATTENDED THE NEW EMPLOYEE ORIENTATION WAS ABLE TO SPEAK TO THE NEW EMPLOYEES THERE. LOTS OF SURPRISES IN THE ROOM. I WAS REALLY SURPRISED BY THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT NEW TO TEACHING AND THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY LIVE IN THE DISTRICT. SO THAT WAS A GOOD RESPONSE FOR ME. ALSO, THE ATHLETIC LUNCHEON I ATTENDED WITH SEVERAL OF THE BOARD MEMBERS HERE, THEY'VE TALKED ABOUT THAT, ALWAYS IMPRESSED BY THE TALENT IN THE ROOM AND ALWAYS IMPRESSED BY THE AMOUNT OF HOURS THAT THESE FINE MEN AND WOMEN PUT INTO THEIR PERSPECTIVE TEAMS. MR. BEACH SAID, I'M NOT GOING TO REPEAT HIM BUT PEOPLE DO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS DISTRICT. IT IS APPARENT EVERYWHERE YOU GO. AND ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT WE HAVE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IS OUR SUPERINTENDENT, DR. RICARDO LOPEZ. AND I'M GOING TO GIVE HIM THE FLOOR AT THIS TIME. WELL, THANK YOU. THAT MADE MY DAY. [V.B. Superintendent's Report ] I DO WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGING AND PRIVATELY ACKNOWLEDGING ALL THE WORK THAT'S BEEN GOING ON BEHIND THE SCENES SINCE SCHOOL CLOSED. [01:30:01] AND WE'RE GETTING READY FOR OUR OPENING. PAUL GONZALEZ AND HIS TEAM HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING IN GETTING THE SCHOOLS READY. YOU KNOW, TIFFANY GILMORE AND HER TEAM HAS GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND IN TRAINING AND ENSURING THAT OUR COUNSELORS ARE ABLE READY. BEHIND THE SCENES, COUNSELORS ARE WORKING SCHEDULES, MAKING SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, WE'RE ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE THOSE FIRST DAY WOAHS, BUT THEY'RE MAKING SURE THAT IT'S GOING TO BE AS PERFECT AS IT IS EVERY YEAR. WE HAVE OUR ADMINISTRATORS THAT STARTED LEAD CON. WE HAD OUR FIRST LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE HERE IN THE DISTRICT AND WE GOT RAVE REVIEWS ON IT. SO WHAT WE DID IS WE DID IT LEADERSHIP STYLE. LIKE WHEN YOU GUYS GO TO SLI. THEY HAVE ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT CHOICES ON WHERE THEY GO FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THEY HAVE TO GET WITH THEIR TEAMS AND DIVIDE AND CONQUER AND THEN COME BACK AND SHARE AND STRATEGIZE. AND SO THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM REALLY APPRECIATED THAT. WHAT I HAVE NOTICED WAS ANY TIME WE GET THE PEOPLE TOGETHER KNOW HOW, NO MATTER HOW EARLY IN THE YEAR, IT IS THE SYNERGY AND THE CONNECTION DOESN'T LEAVE. AND I KNOW THE PAST YEAR AND A HALF HAS BEEN VERY, VERY DIFFICULT FOR EVERYONE, MYSELF, TEACHERS, CUSTODIANS. AND IT'S HAD A PRIVATE WAY AND IN A PROFESSIONAL WAY. AND IN MANY WAYS, WHAT COVID HAS DONE IS TAKE OUT THE JOY OF EDUCATION, THINK ABOUT IT, THINK ABOUT WHAT THE TEACHERS HAVE GONE THROUGH, THINK ABOUT WHAT THE STUDENTS HAVE GONE THROUGH. IT MADE IT TO WHERE IT LOST ITS KIND OF LUSTER. AND THAT'S WHY NATIONALLY WE SEE A LOT OF SHORTAGES IN PEOPLE THAT ARE SAYING, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS FOR ME ANYMORE. WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS REIGNITE THAT. WHAT I WANT TO THANK MY TEACHERS AND MY COMMUNITY FOR WAS ALL THE SACRIFICES THAT THEY'VE MADE TO GET US TO THIS POINT. WE'RE AT THIS POINT BECAUSE EVERYBODY HAS MADE SOME SACRIFICES NOT ONLY IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL LIFE, BUT IN THEIR PERSONAL. SOME HAD TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAD TO CHANGE THE SCHEDULE. WE ALL UNDERSTAND SUMMER SLIDE, BUT NOW WE HAVE A COVID SLIDE. SOME OF OUR KIDS NOT SOME, A LOT OF OUR KIDS, A LOT OF OUR KIDS HAVE NOT SEEN THE SCHOOL SINCE MARCH OF 2020. THINK ABOUT THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND HUMAN EFFECT OF THAT WOULD BE THE SOONER WE CAN GET THEM IN AND GET INTO NORMALCY, THE BETTER. WE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS JUST SEEMS ALL AWKWARD AND EVERYBODY'S ON ANGST AND IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY EMOTION IS OUT THERE. BUT I UNDERSTAND AND. UNDERSTAND THAT WE'RE LISTENING, BUT WE ALSO WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR COURAGE IN GETTING US THROUGH TO THIS POINT AND WE'RE NOW WE'RE MAKING THE HANDOFF AND GETTING THE KIDS TO SCHOOL. I DO AGREE WITH YOU, MRS. STANLEY, THAT MOST OF THE KIDS THAT I SEE AREN'T EXCITED ABOUT A CLOSE SUMMER, BUT THEY'RE EXCITED ABOUT MEETING THEIR FRIENDS. I RUN INTO KIDS AND THEY'RE TELLING ME THEY'RE EXCITED ABOUT FINALLY HAVING A REAL BAND PERFORMANCE IN FRONT OF FANS. I RUN INTO ATHLETES AND THEY'RE LIKE, I CANNOT WAIT TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM AGAIN, NOT UNDER ALL OF THE THINGS THAT THEY EXPERIENCED LAST YEAR. THESE SENIORS HOPEFULLY CAN GET AS NORMAL A YEAR AS POSSIBLE. AND I FEEL BAD FOR THE SENIORS OF 2020 AND 2021. YOU KNOW, MR. JOHNSON CALLED IT WHEN I REMEMBER WE WERE STANDING THERE AND HE SAYS, YOU KNOW, I FEEL BAD FOR THE KIDS OF 2020. THIS IS BACK IN APRIL, APRIL 2020, WHEN THINGS WERE GOING THROUGH. HE GOES. BUT IF THIS PROCEEDS THE WAY WE'RE FORECASTING IT AS A DISTRICT, THE ONES THAT ARE REALLY GOING TO GET CHEATED IS A CLASS OF 21 AND SO THIS IS WHAT WE'RE WORKING FOR. AND I KNOW ONCE WE START GETTING OUR HANDS DIRTY AND GETTING BACK INTO SOME NORMALCY, IT'S GOING TO LIGHT A FIRE IN ALL OF US AND WE'RE GOING TO FALL IN LOVE WITH EVERYTHING WE FALL IN LOVE IT ABOUT EDUCATION AND WHY WE STAYED HERE. SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. AND I ALSO WANT TO LET EVERYBODY KNOW THAT WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT THE DELTA VARIANT, NEW CDC GUIDELINES, THINGS IT SEEMS LIKE THINGS ARE POPPING UP AGAIN WHEN WE GO INTO THIS NEXT SECTION OF OUR SCHOOL YEAR. I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND WE'RE TRYING TO PROCEED WITH A LOT OF LESSONS THAT WE'VE LEARNED AND A LOT OF COMMON SENSE. SO PARENTS, IF YOU FEEL THAT YOUR KID SHOULD WEAR A MASK, PLEASE WEAR A MASK. ADULTS ARE WEARING MASKS IN OUR BUILDINGS BECAUSE THEY FEEL LIKE THAT WILL PROTECT THEM, WHETHER THEY'RE VACCINATED OR NOT. IT'S A HUMAN CHOICE THAT WE WILL NOT CRITICIZE OR PASS JUDGMENT ON, IF THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER. THAT'S WHAT WE WANT. FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS. IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED ONE OF THOSE FACE SHIELDS, ONE OF THOSE PLEXIGLAS SHIELDS ON YOUR DESK WE'LL INSTALL IT. WE WILL CUSTOMIZE THAT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT IT. DURING THE LUNCH LINE, THE BOARD HAS DECIDED WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A TABLE RESERVED WITH [01:35:04] PLEXIGLASS FOR THOSE STUDENTS THAT WOULD FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. WE'RE GOING AND PROCEEDING WITH SOME COMMON SENSE. I'VE TALKED TO A NUMBER OF PARENTS THAT ARE CONCERNED. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WEAR A MASK AND YOU FEEL LIKE A SHIELD IS BETTER, THAT'S FINE. IT'S THE SAME THING AS PLEXIGLASS. IT SHIELDS YOU. YOU CAN SEE KIDS FACES AND SMILES. AND, YOU KNOW, THERE'S A LOT IN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND THERE'S AN EXCHANGE. HOW MANY OF US HAVE GONE TO THE BANK OR SOMEWHERE AND SOMEBODY HAS A MASK AND THEY'RE BEHIND A PLEXIGLASS SHIELD AND YOU'RE TRYING TO TALK TO THEM AND HALF THE TIME. YOU'RE LIKE, WHAT? WHAT? WELL, YOU KNOW, IT COULD BE ORDERING SOMETHING AT A FAST FOOD PLACE. IMAGINE THAT WITH YOUR STUDENTS. IMAGINE SITTING IN FRONT OF THERE WITH ALL OF THAT GOING ON WITH YOUR STUDENTS. AND SO WITH THAT, WE HAVE TO PROCEED WITH SOME WHAT I CALL COMMON SENSE TO SUPPORT THE LEARNING. AND SOMETIMES THE TEACHER HAS TO GET ON THE KID'S DESK AND THE PLEXIGLASS IMPEDES THAT. SO THAT WAY THEY COULD SHOW THEM PHYSICALLY WHAT'S GOING ON. AND SO IF YOU IF YOU FEEL THAT IT'S A PROTECTIVE BARRIER BECAUSE EVERYBODY HAS THEIR INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT THEY NEED TO ATTEND TO, WE'RE NOT GOING TO QUESTION IT. WE'RE GOING TO HELP YOU. WE'LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES. AND WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO IS, IS LEAD WITH LOVE, LEAD WITH INCLUSIVENESS, LEAD WITH GRACE. AND THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN OUR MANTRA IN GISD. AND WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE THAT. SO PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT THAT FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR EVERYBODY, BUT WE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THOSE BEAUTIFUL FACES AND WE'RE GOING TO BE OFF TO A GREAT START. THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THAT TAKES US TO THROUGH TO ITEM C. [V.C. Future Agenda Items ] ITEM C IS FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS. I DO HAVE AN ITEM THAT WAS DISCUSSING WITH MECHELLE BOARD MEMBERS. YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED AN EMAIL TODAY REGARDING OUR BOARD GOAL SETTING SESSION. MECHELLE HAS LISTED FOR YOU IN THAT EMAIL SEVERAL DATES THAT WE CAN CHOOSE FROM, IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, RESPOND BACK TO HER AND LET HER KNOW WHAT YOUR PREFERENCES ARE. WE'LL TRY TO GET A DATE SELECTED. WE INTEND ON THIS BEING ABOUT A FOUR HOUR SESSION. WE DO NEED TO GET IT POSTED. IT WILL BE POSTED IN PUBLIC AND WE WILL PROBABLY CONDUCT THAT RIGHT HERE IN THE BOARDROOM. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER THEM. BUT WE'RE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND GET THAT POSTED AS SOON AS WE GET A DATE SELECTED AND WE WANT TO TRY TO GET IT DONE THE FIRST OF AUGUST. OK, ANYTHING ELSE? ANY OTHER AGENDA ITEMS FOR THE FUTURE, IF NOT, WE'LL MOVE ON TO THE AGENDA. [VI. Consent Agenda ] THIS IS ITEM SIX HUMAN RESOURCES REPORT ON PAGE 39. ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THAT, I BELIEVE THIS WAS PRESENTED TO US AT OUR PREVIOUS COMMITTEE, IS IT UPDATED IN THIS ONE? SO WE DO HAVE AN UPDATE IN YOUR FOLDER. MR. MILLER. YES, I MOVE THAT WE ACCEPT THE HUMAN RESOURCE REPORT AS UPDATED IN OUR FOLDER. SECOND. OK, WE HAVE A MOTION AND A SECOND ALL THOSE IN FAVOR INDICATE BY RAISING YOUR HAND. ANY OPPOSED. SHOWS UNANIMOUS. THANK YOU. LET'S GO TO ACTION ITEM NUMBER SEVEN. [VII.A. Consider Approval of Digital Marquee at South Garland High School –Javier Fernandez ] THIS IS NON CONSENT. WE HAVE SEVERAL ITEMS A THROUGH I IT LOOKS LIKE AND WE'LL GO AHEAD AND TAKE THESE ONE AT A TIME. ACTION ITEM A IS CONSIDERED APPROVAL OF DIGITAL MARQUEE AT SOUTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL. JAVIER FERNANDEZ, DO WE HAVE AN UPDATE ON THIS INFORMATION? OK. BOARD OF TRUSTEES, TRUSTEE MILLER, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. LOPEZ, THIS IS AN UPDATE TO THE PRESENTATION THAT WAS PRESENTED TO FACILITIES COMMITTEE. IN YOUR PACKET, THERE IS AN UPDATED COST FOR THE MARQUEE. IT WAS ASKED DURING THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE. WE'RE LOOKING AT HOLDSWORTH ON OUR SCREEN. IT WAS A PACKET. IT WAS A HANDOUT. GIVE US ONE MOMENT THEN EVERYBODY TO FIND THAT. IS IT IN THE FOLDER? [01:40:04] YES, BOARD IT'S IN THE FOLDER. THE MANILA FOLDER. MR. FERNANDEZ, I'M SORRY. THANK YOU. GO AHEAD AND PROCEED. YES, SIR. IN THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE MEETING, WE DISCUSSED THIS ACTION ITEM, GAVE A PRESENTATION ON THE MARQUEE FOR SOUTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL. WITHIN THAT MEETING, THERE WAS A REQUEST TO LOOK AT A COST FOR THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MARQUEES THAT COULD BE PLACED AT SOUTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL. SO WE'VE GONE BACK AND RECEIVED QUOTES FOR THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MARQUEES. THE FIRST ONE THAT WAS PRESENTED AT THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE IS THE SAME COSTS. IT'S THE DEFINITION OF IT. IT'S A GALAXY GS6. THAT'S THE NAME BRAND OF THE OF THE MARQUEE. THE SECOND IS A SMART LED MARQUEE. IT'S A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER, A LITTLE LESS COST THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MARQUEE AND THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MONUMENT REMAIN THE SAME. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THAT. THE THIRD IS THE MONOCHROME RED. WE WERE ASKED TO SEE WHAT THE COSTS WERE IN MONOCHROME RED MARQUEE WOULD COST AND YOU CAN SEE THE COST THERE. THE OTHER COST WAS A MARQUEE WITH LETTERS THAT'S BEING A MARQUEE THAT YOU ACTUALLY CHANGE EACH LETTER INDIVIDUALLY AND IT'S BEHIND THE PLEXIGLASS. THOSE ARE THE COST THAT WE ARE SEEING FOR THOSE MARQUEE. THE TERMINOLOGY FOR YOUR SHEET, IT'S EMC. EMC STANDS FOR ELECTRONIC MESSAGING CENTER. SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT DIGITAL MARQUEE, WE TALK ABOUT DIGITAL SIGNAGE. THERE'S ALL TYPES OF DIGITAL SIGNAGE. BUT THE SIGNAGE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, IT'S AN ELECTRONIC MESSAGING CENTER. THESE ARE LED TYPES OF OF MARQUEE. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GALAXY AND THE SMART LED. IT JUST DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS SIR. THERE'S A GALAXY IS A [INAUDIBLE] MANUFACTURER AND THE SMART LED IS A WATCH FIRE TYPE OF MARQUEE. SO THE THERE ACTUALLY IS INDUSTRY LEADERS. SO I'VE CALLED AROUND DIFFERENT SIGN COMPANIES TO TALK ABOUT THE ACTUAL DIGITAL DISPLAY ITSELF. THERE ARE THREE INDUSTRY LEADERS IN THE EMC ARENA, THAT BEING [INAUDIBLE] BEING ONE, WATCH FIRE, BEING THE OTHER. AND OPTEK BEING THE OTHER ALL THREE ARE MANUFACTURERS THAT ARE IN THE UNITED STATES. THERE ARE OTHER EMC PRODUCTS THAT ARE OUT THERE THAT ARE A MUCH CHEAPER COST. BUT AS I WAS TALKING TO SEVERAL SIGN COMPANIES, THEY CAUTION THAT THE LOWER UPFRONT COST BECOMES A PROBLEM BECAUSE A LOT OF THESE MARQUEES FIRST OFF, THE ELECTRONIC MESSAGING CENTER MARQUEES. EACH ONE OF THEM HAS A PANEL. SO IT'S NOT WHEN YOU SEE THE DIGITAL DISPLAYS, THEY ALL HAVE A PANEL ON THEM AND EACH PANEL HAS A POWER BOARD. SO THERE'S A POWER BOARD THAT FEEDS EACH ONE OF THESE. AND THE FIRST PRODUCT IT'S GOING TO GO OUT IS THE POWER BOARD. THEY JUST GO OUT THE THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE PROBLEM WITH BUYING NON AMERICAN MADE EMC IS BUYING PARTS. AND SO THEY HAVE WHEN LOOKING AT MARQUEES, THEY SAID WHEN YOU LOOK AT A MARQUEE, YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THREE THOSE THREE DIFFERENT VENDORS. MS. STANLEY, YES. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN ANY KIND OF WARRANTY BETWEEN THE GALAXY AND SMART? NO, THERE'S NOT. MR. JOHNSON. IS IT THE ADMINISTRATION'S RECOMMENDATION THAT WE GO WITH THE GALAXY OVER THE SMART? WHERE WE'RE AT RIGHT NOW IS LOOKING AT GETTING A COST PROPOSAL APPROVED, A DOLLAR VALUE APPROVED, WHETHER IT'S A GALAXY, WHETHER IT'S A SMART LED, WE WANT TO VISIT WITH THE CAMPUS AND SHARE THE PRODUCT INFORMATION WITH THE CAMPUS AND ALLOW THE CAMPUS TO HELP US MAKE THAT DETERMINATION WHEN IT COMES TO THE ACTUAL MARQUEE. WHEN I SAY THE DIGITAL PIECE, THE MONUMENT ITSELF IS WHAT WAS DESIGNED, WHAT YOU SAW AT THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE THAT'S BEEN DESIGNED THAT'S ACTUALLY BEEN APPROVED. [01:45:02] BUT WE'RE LOOKING AT IS VISITING WITH THE CAMPUS AND TALKING ABOUT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LED MONUMENT, LED TYPES OF EMCS THAT ARE OUT THERE. A LITTLE BIT MORE TO THIS IS THE EMCS HAVE DIFFERENT MILLIMETER, WHICH IS THE PIXEL MILLIMETERS OUT THERE. THE TYPICAL IS 16 MILLIMETERS IS WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE IF YOU GET FOR THAT WHERE THE SITE IS LOCATED. IF YOU GET THE SMALLER MILLIMETER ITSELF IS WHEN YOU GET TO EIGHT MILLIMETER, THOSE BECOME CLOSER, VERY MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE. YOU CAN GET SOME SIGNS THAT ARE LESS EXPENSIVE, BUT THE DISTANCE IN VIEWING OF THAT SIGN. SO SOME OF THESE SIGNS, WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS WHERE THE SIGN IS PLACED RELATIVE TO TRAFFIC FLOW. SO YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET A SIGN THAT'S MUCH MORE ECONOMICAL. BUT THE PIXELS, THE MILLIMETERS ON IT IS LARGER, WHICH MEANS THAT IT LOOKS GREAT IF YOU'RE A FATHER DISTANCE AWAY FROM IT. SO SOME PEOPLE PUT THOSE ON A BUILDING. SO IF YOU PUT IT ON A BUILDING AND IT'S A FATHER DISTANCE, IT LOOKS FINE. BUT IF YOU PUT IT CLOSER TO THE STREET, THEN IT LOOKS BLURRY. SO ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU'RE DOING A MARQUEE A LOT. SO THE DESIGN OF THE MARQUEE DESIGN OF THE MONUMENT, THE TYPES OF SYSTEMS THAT WE'RE GOING TO USE, ALL OF THESE COME INTO PLAY. AND SO IN WORKING WITH SPECIFICALLY SOUTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL, WE UTILIZED AN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM TO DRAW THIS AND TO PROVIDE THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THIS. SO ALL OF THIS WAS DONE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A PROFESSIONAL FIRM TO HELP US DECIDE WHAT IS BEST FOR THAT PLACEMENT AT THE PLACEMENT OF THE MARQUEE AND WHAT IS BEST FOR THAT LOCATION AND THE TYPE OF MARKET THAT WE WOULD BE USING. I MEAN, THE KIND OF THE REASON WHY I'M ASKING IS FOR MY OPINION IF WE'RE BUYING SOUTH GARLAND A MARQUEE, WE PROBABLY ULTIMATELY NEED TO BUY A MARQUEE FOR ALL OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS. THAT'S JUST COME OUT AND THINKING. THE HIGH SCHOOL'S EFFECT SO MANY EVENTS GOING ON, SO MANY EVENTS THAT SUPPORT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT ARE THAT F EED INTO THOSE HIGH SCHOOLS. I KNOW THAT MY SON'S BAND PLAYS AT THE SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL AND SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL PROMOTES THAT. THEY PUT THAT ON THEIR MARQUEE. AND SO THE HIGH SCHOOLS ARE KIND OF OUR SHOWCASE. I NEVER REALLY WASN'T REALLY ALL THAT COMFORTABLE WITH US PAYING FOR ONE SCHOOL AND NOT THE OTHERS. I UNDERSTAND WE'RE REBRANDING SOUTH GARLAND AND THAT'S THE MOTIVATION BEHIND IT. BUT WHEN I LOOK THERE AND I SEE THAT 18000 HOUR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NUMBER ONE AND NUMBER TWO AND I MULTIPLY THAT BY SEVEN, THAT BECOMES SIGNIFICANT. AND SO THAT'S KIND OF WHAT I'M LOOKING AT. I KNOW THIS IS JUST SOUTH GARLAND, BUT I DO BELIEVE IF WE ARE GOING TO GO DOWN THIS ROAD, WE'RE SETTING A STANDARD MAYBE FOR THE OTHER SIX. AND SO THAT'S KIND OF WHAT I'M THINKING IS IF THIS SMART LED IS FUNCTIONALLY SIMILAR OR EQUIVALENT TO THE TO THE GALAXY GS6 AND IT'S AMERICAN MADE AND WE DON'T HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT THE WARRANTY AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE, THEN I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THAT EIGHTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR DIFFERENCE MULTIPLYING OVER ANOTHER SIX SCHOOLS POTENTIALLY. I KNOW THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU'RE HERE FOR, BUT THOSE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND THAT'S WHERE I'M COMING FROM. ANYBODY ELSE, THOUGHTS, COMMENTS. SO THE DIRECTION THAT YOU NEED FROM THE BOARD THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR TONIGHT IS REALLY NOT WHICH SIGN, BUT JUST AN AMOUNT THAT YOU CAN THEN USE TO BUDGET AS YOU GO AND SEEK SOLUTIONS FOR THE MARQUEE FOR SOUTH GARLAND. SO IF THAT BEING SAID, BOARD, I THINK FOR CONSIDERATION FOR US TONIGHT OR DISCUSSION, WHATEVER YOU WOULD HAVE IS KIND OF A MOUNTAIN THAT WE WANT TO SET, I THINK, MR. JOHNSON BOTH TONIGHT AND IN PREVIOUS MEETING WITH THE FACILITY COMMITTEE EXPRESSED HIS DESIRE OR NOT, THOSE ARE HIS CONCERN THAT WHATEVER WE DO HERE KIND OF BECOMES A STANDARD FOR THE DISTRICT. AND IF THAT'S THE CASE, SO BE IT. JUST EVERYBODY HAVE THEIR EYES OPEN AS TO WHAT IT IS WE'RE DOING WITH THIS PARTICULAR DISCUSSION ITEM TONIGHT. AND, MR. JOHNSON, YOU WANT TO FOLLOW UP. YEAH, I DON'T I'M NOT AS CONCERNED THAT IT'S SETTING A STANDARD FOR A DISTRICT, ESPECIALLY IF WE END UP ULTIMATELY PROVIDING ONE OF THESE FOR THE HIGH SCHOOLS. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE UNDERSTAND THAT MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE NOT HIGH SCHOOLS AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE SAME NEEDS. [01:50:03] AND SO WE WOULDN'T I DON'T THINK WE NEED TO IMPOSE THIS TYPE OF A SUBSTANTIAL MONUMENT DIGITAL SIGN ON AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I THINK THAT IF THEY CAN FUND AN UPGRADE OVER WHAT THEY HAVE WITH THEIR PTA, WE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM AND LET THEM DO THAT. BUT WITH RESPECT TO THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE IS, LIKE I SAID, MY ULTIMATELY WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE IS THAT WE FUND ONE FOR ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS THAT THAT'S WES JOHNSON. I. HIGH SCHOOLS. HIGH SCHOOLS, EACH ONE FOR OUR HIGH SCHOOLS. WELL, I THINK THAT'S A GOOD POINT. AND I'LL GET TO MR. BEACH HERE NEXT. BUT I THINK AT THE FACILITY COMMITTEE, IT WOULD BE REALLY GOOD TO HAVE A PRESENTATION THAT WOULD KIND OF LAY OUT THE EXPECTATIONS FOR WHATEVER MARQUEES IF WE'RE GOING TO MARKET THAT EVERY CAMPUS EVENTUALLY JUST KIND OF THOSE LEVELS. I DON'T THINK, YOU KNOW, THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVELS TO ME NEED TO GRADUATE AND HAVE DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS. AND HOWEVER THAT SPELLS OUT MR. FERNANDEZ THAT WE WOULD LOOK FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS ON THAT. SO I THINK THE BOARD, THOUGH, TONIGHT, WE REALLY HAVE ONE THING ON THE AGENDA. MR. BEACH. THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO ASK YOU. JUST THE ONE ITEM THAT WE HAVE BROUGHT IN TO US TONIGHT IS EMC GALAXY. EITHER WE VOTE IT UP OR DOWN, IS THAT CORRECT? EMC GALAXY. IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT EMC SMART. IS THAT CORRECT? THE AGENDA ITEM. THE AGENDA ITEM. THE AGENDA ITEM STATES THAT THE ISSUE THAT WE'RE VOTING ON TONIGHT FROM THE 2014 BOND AUTHORIZATION FUND 681 IS THE PROJECT NOT TO EXCEED ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN THOUSAND TWO FORTY FOUR, WHICH ONLY AS STATED BY OR SHOWN TO US BY THE EMC GALAXY. THAT IS THE EXACT AMOUNT, BUT IT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT EMC SMART OR ANYTHING ELSE. SO ARE WE'RE VOTING ON JUST THIS ONE. YOU'RE VOTING ON A NOT TO SEE THEM OUT. SO ONCE THEY GO BACK TO THE CAMPUS AND IF THE CAMPUS CHOOSES TO TAKE YOUR NOT TO EXCEED AMOUNT AND SELECT THE EMC GALAXY, WHICH IS THAT AMOUNT, THEN THAT'S THE ONE. THAT'S WHAT EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE EXACT AMOUNT OF THAT, THE ONE COMPANY. YOUR FORM THERE INDICATES A CONTINGENCY AS WELL AS THE BASE PRICE. SO, YES, EVEN THOUGH THE EXACT AMOUNT THAT'S THE NOT TO EXCEED. OK, THERE'S THERE'S STILL FREEDOM TO CHOOSE. THAT IS A CAP. YES, SIR. THAT'S SO THE COST OF THE MARQUEE IN THE MONUMENT IS NINETY SEVEN WHEN YOU ADD THE PERMIT FEE, WHAT I'M SHOWING YOU HERE IS THE TOTAL COST OF THE PROJECT ALONG WITH THE DESIGN FEES. AND SO WHAT WE'RE HERE TONIGHT TO DO IS TO TALK ABOUT THE OVERALL, NOT TO EXCEED AMOUNT. SO YOU CAN CHANGE THAT, NOT TO EXCEED MR. BEACH. JUST JUST SO YOU KNOW, IT DOESN'T THAT'S WHAT THE RECOMMENDATION IS FOR ADMINISTRATION. BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO LOWER OR HIGHER, BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO LOWER, YOU CAN. OK. MS. GRIFFIN. YES. I JUST WANTED TO CALL THE BOARD'S ATTENTION TO THE DIRECTION THAT YOU GAVE THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE WHEN WE DISCUSSED THIS. YOU ASKED AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME THAT WE GO BACK AND COST OUT MARQUEES AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AND THEN BASICALLY THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. SO THAT REPORT IS ALREADY IN PROGRESS. SO THAT RESEARCH IS ALREADY IN PROGRESS. THAT WILL BE ON THE NEXT FACILITY'S AGENDA. SO THEY ARE DOING. I HAVE TALKED ABOUT. I WAS GOING TO HIGHLIGHT WE ARE WORKING WITH THOSE VENDORS AND OUR GOAL, THOSE BOARD DOCS ARE DUE TODAY FOR THE NEXT FACILITIES COMMITTEE MEETING. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE IT BACK IN AUGUST. IF NOT, I WILL BE ABLE TO CONFIRM THAT WITH YOU AS WE GO THROUGH THAT AGENDA. OK, SO I'LL RESTATE MY WHAT I'M TRYING TO REMIND US OF IS THAT YOU DIRECTED THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE TO GO BACK AND DO RESEARCH ON MARQUEES AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AND THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. AND ALL I'M TRYING TO SAY IS THAT WORK HAS ALREADY BEGUN. SO THAT WILL BE ON THE NEXT AVAILABLE DATE OF THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE. VERY GOOD. GOT IT. MS. STANLEY. IF THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE NOW, IF THERE'S A PIXEL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SMART LED AND THE GALAXY, I GET WHAT YOU'RE SAYING AS FAR AS THE PIXEL. [01:55:02] I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THAT, BUT IF THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE AS FAR AS THE PIXEL, I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHY WE WOULD SPEND AN EXTRA SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE THE CAMPUS DECIDES IT WANTS TO SPEND AN EXTRA SIXTEEN THOUSAND. SO I MEAN, I'M ALL FOR THE SMART LED AND BUT I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT I WOULD UNLESS YOU CAN TELL ME THAT THERE'S SOMETHING SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT BETWEEN THOSE TWO, I DON'T KNOW WHY WE WOULD VOTE ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN THOUSAND NOT TO EXCEED WHEN WE KNOW WE CAN DO IT FOR NINETY FOUR. I JUST I'M NOT UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS I GUESS. THANK YOU. ARE YOU READY FOR A MOTION? YEAH, MS. GRIFFIN. I MOVE THAT WE ACCEPT THE DIGITAL MARQUEE THAT HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO US IN FACILITIES WITH A NOT TO EXCEED AMOUNT OF NINETY EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS. SECOND. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION BOARD? OK, WE HAVE A MOTION ON THE FLOOR AND A SECOND, THAT MOTION IS TO APPROVE THIS ITEM WITH A NINETY EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLAR LIMIT. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR VOTE BY RAISING YOUR HAND. ANY OPPOSED. LET THE RECORD SHOW SIX TO ONE. THANK YOU. LET'S GO TO ITEM 7B CONSIDERED APPROVAL OF STAGE LIFT AT HILLSIDE ACADEMY [VII.B. Consider Approval of Stage Lift at Hillside Academy for Excellence – Javier Fernandez ] OF EXCELLENCE FOR EXCELLENCE. JAVIER FERNANDEZ ALSO. ARE THERE ANY CHANGES SINCE THE COMMITTEE ITEM WHERE THIS WAS DISCUSSED? I DON'T BELIEVE THERE ARE BOARD TO HAVE ANY DISCUSSION YOU WISH TO HAVE ON THIS ITEM OR MOTIONS TO BE MADE. WHICH ONE? STAGE LIFT AT HILLSIDE ACADEMY AS PRINTED IN OUR AGENDA. SECOND. WE HAVE A MOTION AND A SECOND ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION BOARD. IF NOT, PLEASE INDICATE YOUR VOTE. AFFIRMATIVE BY RAISING YOUR ARM. ANY AGAINST? LET ME CLARIFY ANY AGAINST. THAT SHOWS UNANIMOUS. ACTION ITEM 7C APPROVAL, CONSIDER APPROVAL OF EXTENSION OF EMPLOYEE CLINIC LEASE. [VII.C. Consider Approval of Extension of Employee Clinic Lease – Dr. Brent Ringo ] DR. RINGO. THIS, AGAIN, WAS DISCUSSED AT LENGTH IN COMMITTEE. I THINK DR. RINGO MADE A GOOD PRESENTATION ON THIS BOARD. I DON'T BELIEVE THERE ANY CHANGES TO THAT OR TO THE LEASE. ANY QUESTIONS FOR HIM? MS. GRIFFIN. I MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE EXTENSION OF THE EMPLOYEE CLINIC LEASE AS OUTLINED IN OUR AGENDA. SECOND. YES. GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT MILLER, RESPECTED TRUSTEES, DR. LOPEZ. WE HAVE THREE POLICIES THAT ARE BEFORE YOU, CH LOCAL, CV LOCAL AND DEC LOCAL. THESE WERE PROVIDED FOR UPDATE 117 BY TASB. ACTUALLY IN CH LOCAL. THE RECOMMENDED CHANGE IS TO DELEGATE THE AUTHORITY TO THE SUPERINTENDENT TO CONTRACT FOR REPLACEMENT CONSTRUCTION, REPAIR OF EQUIPMENT OR FACILITIES IN THE EVENT OF A CATASTROPHE. SO WE APPEAR TO BE QUITE PRESSION THIS LAST YEAR WHEN WE DID THE DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY. SO BECAUSE A LOT OF DISTRICTS WERE MOVING IN THAT DIRECTION, TASB WE DECIDED TO JUST INCORPORATE THAT IN THE POLICY. FOR OUR CV LOCAL. WHAT THEY DID IS THEY ALIGN THE CHANGES TO CH LOCAL ON THE DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY FOR THE EMERGENCY CONTRACTING FOR CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS, SIMILARLY TO CH LOCAL. AND FINALLY WITH DEC LOCAL, BECAUSE OF THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL FLEXIBILITY REGARDING THE ADMINISTRATION. OF LEAVE DURING THIS COVID TIME, TASB POLICY, LEGAL AND HR SERVICES COLLABORATED TOGETHER AND RECOMMENDED REVISIONS TO THE POLICY. THESE INCLUDED REMOVING SOME OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE DETAILS THAT WE HAD IN OUR DC LOCAL POLICY, WHICH GOVERNS MEDICAL LEAVES AND ABSENCES, AND THEY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU MOVE THEM TO THE EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK. THEY ALSO GAVE A MANDATE TO THE SUPERINTENDENT TO PROVIDE OR CREATE ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATIONS. THE HUMAN RESOURCES TEAM AND I HAVE ALSO COLLABORATED ON THAT ALREADY. AND WE WILL BE CREATING AN ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATION TO PROVIDE FOR EMPLOYEES FOR LEAVES AND ABSENCES. AND THAT IS ALL THE POLICIES THAT WE HAVE. JUST THREE. AND IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, I'M HERE TO ANSWER THEM. YES, MA'AM. THANK YOU. BOARD ANY DISCUSSION OR QUESTIONS, MR. MILLER? HANG ON. WES DID YOU HAVE A QUESTION? YEAH, I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I MEAN, IS THIS CAME THROUGH A POLICY ADVISORY GROUP WITH THE APPROVAL AND RECOMMENDATION OF POLICY ADVISORY. AND IT'S SECOND READ.
