[00:00:01]
OK. GOOD EVENING, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IT'S NOW FIVE OH ONE.
I'M CALLING TO ORDER AND DETERMINING THERE'S A QUORUM HERE TODAY FOR THE GARLAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES REGULAR MEETING.
IT'S OCTOBER 26TH, 2021 AND AS I SAID, WE'RE BEGINNING AT 5:01.
FIRST THING WE DO, WE'RE GOING TO DO OUR TWO PLEDGES SO ALL WOULD RISE AND FACE THE FLAG.
OK, THE NEXT ITEM IS PUBLIC FORUM.
[III. Public Forum ]
I DO HAVE 10 CARDS IN FRONT OF ME, MECHELLE, ARE THERE ANY OTHER CARDS? MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WHO WISH TO MAKE COMMENTS MAY COMPLETE A PUBLIC COMMENT PARTICIPATION REQUEST IN PERSON AT HARRIS HILL ADMINISTRATION PRIOR TO THE START OF THE MEETING, INDICATED IN THE POSTED NOTICE.COMPLAINTS ABOUT STUDENT DISCIPLINE, SPECIFIC STUDENT ISSUES OR PERSONNEL MUST BE ADDRESSED THROUGH APPROPRIATE ADMINISTRATIVE CHANNELS.
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TEXAS OPEN MEETING ACT AND BOARD POLICY.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS, YOU CAN CHECK GO ONLINE AND CHECK FOR PUBLIC COMMENT IN OUR BOARD POLICY.
OK, WE'RE GOING TO START THE WAY THIS WORKS IS WILL COME UP.
YOU WILL STATE YOUR NAME, YOUR ADDRESS, AND WE'D LIKE TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE KIDS IN THE DISTRICT. IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO KNOW.
RINGO. YOU'LL GET THREE MINUTES.
DR. RINGO WHY DON'T YOU GO OVER THE PROTOCOL WITH THE TIMER.
I COACHED SIX AND EIGHT YEAR OLD SOCCER LAST NIGHT, BUT YOU HAVE THREE MINUTES AT ONE MINUTE YOU WILL SEE A LIGHT FLASH YELLOW AND THEN AFTER THREE MINUTES IT WILL BLINK RED AND YOU'LL HEAR A BEEP. YOU'LL HEAR A BEEP.
YOU WON'T HEAR HIM HOLLER. [LAUGHTER] I'M SORRY FOR PUTTING YOU ON THE SPOT.
I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULDN'T TALK.
OH GOSH, OK, SO WE'RE GOING TO START WITH THE CARDS NOW, AND IF I MISREAD YOUR NAME, MY APOLOGIES. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE ERIC RITCHIE IS OUR FIRST SPEAKER.
MY NAME IS ERIC RITCHIE, AND I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE GIVING MY ADDRESS, IT'S ON THE CARD. I HAVE TWO THAT GO TO SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL AND ONE AT BRANDENBURG.
TODAY, I WANTED TO ADDRESS THE MANDATE THAT'S EXPIRING TODAY.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.
IT BREAKS OUR GOVERNOR'S GA38 ORDER.
AND NOT ONLY THAT, BUT IT ALSO IS DETRIMENTAL TO KIDS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING THAT YOU GUYS ARE SAID TO PROVIDE TO OUR STUDENTS.
THERE'S A LOT OF EVIDENCE THAT IT IT HINDERS THEIR NONVERBAL AND VERBAL COMMUNICATION.
AND BECAUSE THE FACE PROCESSES INFORMATION VERBALLY, YOU KNOW, PUTTING A MASK OVER THAT IT'S HINDERING THAT VERY GREATLY.
SO ANOTHER ISSUE IS THAT LET'S SEE HERE. I'M SORRY, YOU KNOW, STUDENTS, WHEN THEY LOOK AT A CRITICAL FACE OF A TEACHER, THEY'RE PROCESSING THAT INFORMATION NEGATIVELY.
AND SO LIKE, IT REMOVES CREATIVITY FROM THEIR THINKING AND IT HINDERS THEIR LEARNING ABILITY. AND I ALSO KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, FROM PARENTS EXPERIENCES AND WHAT THEIR KIDS HAVE TOLD THEM THAT THE KIDS SOMETIMES CAN'T HEAR THE TEACHERS OVER THE MASKS AND THEY ASK THE TEACHER TO REPEAT THEMSELVES AND THE TEACHERS DON'T GO BACK AND REPEAT THEMSELVES. SO THEY'RE NOT GETTING SOME OF THE INFORMATION THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO BE, YOU KNOW, TRYING TO UNDERSTAND OR LEARN.
YOU KNOW, I'M LOOK, I'M GOING TO BE FRANK WITH YOU GUYS.
THERE'S AN AGENDA GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY.
YOU KNOW, IT'S THERE'S A COMMUNIST AGENDA GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY AND THIS WHOLE MASK
[00:05:06]
MANDATE THING.YOU KNOW, IT'S BECOME SO HIGHLY POLITICIZED THAT IT'S BECOME PART OF THAT AGENDA OR IT IS PART OF THE AGENDA. AND WE MUST STAND FOR FREEDOM IN THIS COUNTRY.
YOU KNOW, US PARENTS WHO DON'T WANT THE MASK MANDATES.
WE'RE NOT ASKING OTHER PARENTS TO, YOU KNOW, IF OTHER PARENTS WANT TO SEND THEIR KIDS TO SCHOOL WITH MASKS, THAT'S TOTALLY FINE.
BUT THEY CAN'T DICTATE TO US WHAT WE MUST DO FOR OUR KIDS.
AND NEITHER SHOULD A SCHOOL BOARD.
YOU KNOW, WE DON'T CO-PARENT WITH THE GOVERNMENT.
WE ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE THE SOLE AUTHORITY AND RIGHT TO YOU KNOW, WHAT'S BEST FOR OUR CHILD'S HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, NOT THE STATE.
AND YOU KNOW, SO I JUST, YOU KNOW, I JUST ASK THAT YOU GUYS REALLY DISCERN WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY AND SEE THAT THERE'S AN AGENDA ON FAMILIES, THERE'S AN AGENDA ALL ACROSS THESE SCHOOLS AND THERE'S MORE FAMILIES PULLING THEM OUT FOR HOME SCHOOL. SO I DON'T KNOW, JUST, YOU KNOW, I JUST ASK YOU TO USE JUDGMENT.
THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT, OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS ELENA RICHARDSON.
I LIVE IN SACHSE, I HAVE TWO KIDS IN GISD.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION OF ISSUES WEIGHING HEAVILY ON THE PEOPLE OF OUR COMMUNITY. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT TODAY THERE WILL BE NO VOTE ON MASK MANDATE, BUT I ALSO KNOW THERE IS A STRONG LIKELIHOOD THAT THIS IS NOT THE LAST TIME WE WILL VISIT THIS SUBJECT.
WHEN WE REVISIT THIS TOPIC I'D LIKE YOU TO KEEP A FEW THINGS IN MIND.
THERE CAN BE NO KEENER REVELATION OF A SOCIETY'S SOUL THAN THE WAY IT TREATS ITS CHILDREN. NELSON MANDELA.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR OUR CHILDREN? DO YOU HOPE THEY GROW UP TO BE WELL-ROUNDED, CRITICALLY THINKING PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS? DO YOU HOPE THAT THEY KNOW HOW TO PROBLEM SOLVE AND UNDERSTAND FELLOW STUDENTS? DO YOU HOPE THAT THEY LEAD PRODUCTIVE LIVES? IF ANSWERED YES TO ANY OF THESE QUESTIONS, THEN YOU KNOW THAT WHEN WE SPEAK ABOUT EDUCATING OUR CHILDREN THAT IT GOES BEYOND ACADEMICS, THAT WE NEED TO THINK AND DO BETTER. WE NEED TO EDUCATE THE WHOLE CHILD.
WE NEED TO TEACH THEM TO MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON FACTS AND NOT EMOTIONS THAT THEIR WORDS AND ACTIONS IMPACT OTHERS THAT THE ADULTS IN THEIR LIVES CAN MODEL SOUND DECISION MAKING SKILLS. THIS MASK MANDATE HAS BECOME A POLITICIZED EVENT, WHEREAS LOGICAL AND SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE IS NO LONGER ACCOUNTED FOR.
IT IS OUR JOB AS PARENTS AND SCHOOL LEADERS TO EASE THE FEARS OF STUDENTS AND ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY. INSTEAD, THESE MASKS HAVE DONE THE OPPOSITE BY SCARING STUDENTS INTO BELIEVING THAT THEY ARE BEING STALKED BY AN INVISIBLE MONSTER LURKING IN THE VERY PARTICLES THAT THEY BREATHE. THAT AT ANY MOMENT THEY MAY CONTRACT THE VIRUS AND DIE.
THE SOCIAL PRESSURES AND DIVISION THIS IS CREATING IN OUR COMMUNITY AND SCHOOLS MUST STOP. WHEN IS ENOUGH? WHAT IS THE MAGIC NUMBER? WHEN DO WE ALL BECOME SAFE AGAIN? OR DO WE JUST PICK ARBITRARY DATES IN THE FUTURE TO PACIFY A POLITICAL AGENDA? IN ADDITION TO PHYSICAL IMPACTS, THE MASKS PRESENT ADDITIONAL CHALLENGE TO OUR ESL STUDENTS WHO ARE TRYING TO LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE AND TEACHERS MOUTHS ARE COVERED.
IT ALSO IMPACTS OUR DYSLEXIC STUDENTS.
OUR AUTISTIC STUDENTS OUR SPEECH KIDS, FACIAL CUES ARE LEARNED IN FORMATIVE YEARS AND ARE SKEWED WITH STUDENTS DISABILITIES TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING CONVEYED.
THE CDC REPORTS THAT IN 2020 CHILDREN, FIVE TO 11 MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES WERE UP TWENTY FIVE PERCENT.
IN AGES 12 TO 17 THEY WERE UP 31 PERCENT DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THIS TRUE CRISIS OF PERPETUATING STUDENTS FEELINGS OF ISOLATION, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY WITH OUR MASKS.
STAND UP FOR WHAT IS TRUE AND RIGHT.
STAND WITH US AND DO RIGHT BY OUR KIDS.
I KNOW THAT YOU HAVE LET THE MANDATE EXPIRE.
I'M ADVOCATING THAT YOU KEEP IT THAT WAY.
OK, OUR THIRD SPEAKER TONIGHT, AS IS.
YOU CAN CORRECT ME WHEN YOU GET TO THE MICROPHONE.
THANK YOU. MY NAME IS ANILA, AND I HAVE THREE KIDS IN GARLAND ISD AND I LIVE IN ROWLETT.
HELLO, I'M HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT MASK MANDATES.
I REALIZE THAT THE MANDATE ENDS TODAY, AND I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE EXEMPTION THAT GISD HAS
[00:10:04]
ALLOWED THUS FAR.HOWEVER, THERE SHOULDN'T BE AN EXEMPTION TO LIVE FREE AND MAKE YOUR OWN CHOICES IN A FREE COUNTRY. I WAS BORN IN A COMMUNIST COUNTRY.
BELIEVE ME, I KNOW, AND THERE'S NO NEED TO GO AGAINST OUR GOVERNOR'S EXECUTIVE ORDERS.
WHAT DOES THIS TEACH OUR KIDS ANYWAY? LET'S GO AGAINST OUR GOVERNOR'S ORDERS FOR FREEDOM AND CHOICE, AND LET'S RECEIVE A BUNCH OF MONEY FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND ESSER FUNDS THAT COME WITH A BUNCH OF STRINGS ATTACHED. THAT'S NOT SUSPICIOUS AT ALL.
I'D ALSO LIKE TO ADDRESS THE MASK HYPOCRISY.
BUT FIRST, LET'S GET TO SOME TRUTH.
I REALIZE THAT THE MASK MANDATE MAY OR MAY NOT BE ON THE TABLE RIGHT NOW, BUT WHO'S TO SAY WHAT'S COMING DOWN THE PIPELINE, ESPECIALLY WITH GISD GETTING OVER ONE HUNDRED AND TEN MILLION DOLLARS IN ESSER FUNDS FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT? WHO'S TO SAY THAT MANDATORY VACCINES WON'T BE NEXT? WE ALL SEE THE WRITING ON THE WALL.
IF THE TRUTH IS SUPPOSED TO BE INFLUENCING PUBLIC POLICY, WHICH THEREFORE INFLUENCES MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, THEN WE'D BETTER MAKE SURE WE GET THE STUFF RIGHT.
SEVENTY THREE MILLION KIDS IN THE U.S.
AND LAST THAT I CHECKED AROUND 700 HAVE UNFORTUNATELY DIED WITH COVID DURING THE PANDEMIC. MOST OF THESE KIDS DEATHS ARE WITH COVID, NOT BECAUSE OF COVID.
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, AND I'M SURE YOU KNOW THAT.
NOW LET'S PUT THIS IN PERSPECTIVE.
ABOUT FIFTY THOUSAND CHILDREN UNDER 14 HAVE DIED OF ALL CAUSES SINCE THE START OF THE PANDEMIC CDC.
THERE'S CAR CRASH, FIREARM DEATHS, SUFFOCATION VIA SUICIDE, AND YOU KNOW, THESE SUICIDE NUMBERS ARE GOING THROUGH THE ROOF.
THERE'S DRUG OVERDOSE AND DROWNINGS.
SO DO WE GET RID OF CARS AND SWIMMING POOLS? OF COURSE NOT. FLU SEASONS HAVE ALSO KILLED MANY KIDS IN PAST YEARS.
HOW HAVE WE NEVER HAD A MANDATE MASKS FOR FLU? THE KIDS EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL STATES ARE BEING RAVAGED BY THESE MASK MANDATES.
GOING FORWARD. GIVE US AS A PARENTS THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE.
MY CHILD, WHO IS IN SPEECH THERAPY, HAS A SIGNIFICANT REGRESSION IN HIS SPEECH DURING LAST YEAR'S MASK MANDATES, HE COULDN'T CONTINUE TO LEARN HIS BREATHING TECHNIQUES IF HE COULDN'T SEE HIS TEACHER'S MOUTH AND HE COULDN'T PRACTICE CORRECTLY HIS MOUTH AND BREATHING IF IT'S STRUGGLING IN A SOGGY MASK FOR EIGHT HOURS A DAY.
ANOTHER INTERESTING FACT SACHSE AND ROWLETT HOMECOMING WERE AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER.
WHY WERE ALL THESE KIDS WERE HUGGING AND TAKING PICTURES WITH EACH OTHER? AND THE NUMBERS OF COVID CONTINUE TO GO DOWN FROM POINT FIVE TO POINT FOUR TO POINT ONE EIGHT PERCENT AFTER BOTH HOMECOMINGS.
FINALLY, I CAN'T ADDRESS HYPOCRISY WITHOUT ADDRESSING HOW MANY OF YOU GISD SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WERE UNMASKED AT THE NATATORIUM GRAND OPENING.
HOW IS IT THAT YOU GET TO HAVE A VOICE OR A CHOICE IN MAKING WITH YOUR PEERS OF MASK VERSUS NOT MASK? WHY MY KIDS DO NOT HAVE THE CHOICE OF FREEDOM UNLESS THEY FILL OUT AN EXEMPTION FORM, THERE SHOULDN'T BE A FORM FOR GOD GIVEN FREEDOM.
I HOPE MANDATES WILL NEVER BE AN ISSUE IN GISD AGAIN.
DON'T GET ME WRONG, THE VIRUS IS REAL.
THE DEATH TOLL IS INACCURATE AND SUSPICIOUS AT BEST, AND THE FEAR IS POLITICAL AND HYPOCRITICAL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
THANK YOU. OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS CHRIS MOYER.
WE LIVE IN ROWLETT. WE HAVE TWO STUDENTS CURRENTLY IN GISD AND ONE THAT GRADUATED A FEW YEARS AGO. I'M SURE YOU GUYS CAN GUESS WHAT I'M ABOUT TO SPEAK ABOUT, SO I WANT TO START OFF BY SAYING I UNDERSTAND THE MASK MANDATE EXPIRED TODAY AND IT IS NOT ON THE AGENDA FOR TONIGHT. HOWEVER, I WOULD STILL LIKE TO ADDRESS THE EXPIRED MANDATE AND ANY POSSIBILITY OF FUTURE MANDATES.
FIRST, I KNOW THE DISTRICT LIKES TO CALL IT A REQUIREMENT AND NOT A MANDATE.
I'M ASSUMING YOU BELIEVE THAT IT DOESN'T FALL UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER GA38, IF YOU USE THAT TERMINOLOGY. HOWEVER, DICTIONARY.COM DEFINES THE VERB MANDATE AS TO REQUIRE.
A REQUIREMENT IS, BY DEFINITION, A MANDATE.
ANY MASK REQUIREMENT IS A MANDATE AND IS THEREFORE ILLEGAL AND UNENFORCEABLE UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER GA38.
SECOND, THE NUMBERS HAVE NEVER SUPPORTED THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A MASK MANDATE REGARDLESS OF LEGALITY. ACCORDING TO THE GISD COVID 19 DASHBOARD THAT IS UPDATED ALMOST DAILY CASE NUMBERS PEAKED ON AUGUST 26TH AT EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN ACTIVE CASES.
THIS EQUATES TO A PALTRY ONE POINT THREE PERCENT OF THE SIXTY THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND NINETY FOUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN OUR DISTRICT, MEANING THAT NINETY EIGHT POINT SEVEN PERCENT OF OUR STUDENT TEACHER POPULATION WAS UNAFFECTED AT THE TIME THAT WE HAD THE MOST ACTIVE CASES.
BY THE TIME THE MANDATE TOOK EFFECT ON SEPTEMBER 1ST, THIS NUMBER HAD ALREADY DROPPED TWENTY FOUR PERCENT IN SIX DAYS TO ONLY SIX HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN CASES, OR ONE PERCENT OF THE STUDENT TEACHER POPULATION.
THE NUMBERS HAVE CONTINUED TO STEADILY DECLINE, AND TODAY GISD REPORTED ONLY 72 ACTIVE CASES, OR POINT ONE TWO PERCENT OF THE STUDENT TEACHER POPULATION.
MANDATE SUPPORTERS WILL TELL YOU THE CASES ARE THIS LOW BECAUSE OF THE MASK MANDATE, BUT
[00:15:05]
THE DATA TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY.A TWENTY FOUR PERCENT DECLINE IN LESS THAN A WEEK PRIOR TO THE MANDATE GOING INTO EFFECT SHOWS THAT CASES WERE ON A DOWNWARD TRAJECTORY BEFORE ANYONE WAS FORCED TO WEAR A MASK.
WHILE THERE WAS A MASK REQUIREMENT INDOORS, THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN OUTDOOR EVENTS WHERE THEY WERE CLOSELY PACKED SPORTING EVENTS, HOMECOMING DANCES, NO MASKS AND THE NUMBERS STILL STEADILY DECLINED.
TEXAS HAS NO STATEWIDE MASK MANDATES.
NUMBERS HAVE STEADILY DECLINED, AND WE'RE AT THE LOWEST NUMBER OF ACTIVE CASES IN OVER TWO MONTHS. THIS IS TRUE NATIONALLY AS WELL.
MASK MANDATES ARE NOT NECESSARY.
THE LAST NUMBER I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS IS THE NUMBER ZERO.
THIS MAY BE CONTROVERSIAL, BUT FIRST, THAT IS THE NUMBER OF MASKS WORN BY ALL OF YOU, INCLUDING DR. LOPEZ INDOORS AT THE OPENING OF THE GARLAND NATATORIUM.
FUNNY HOW PARENTS AND STUDENTS ARE FORCED TO WEAR MASKS INSIDE OF DISTRICT BUILDINGS, BUT YOU ARE NOT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, WE WERE ILLEGALLY DENIED ENTRY INTO THIS MEETING TODAY UNLESS WE PUT ON A MASK BEFORE WE CAME IN.
BUT YOUR CHOICE TO REMAIN MASKLESS SPEAKS VOLUMES.
YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT WE KNOW.
MASK MANDATES ARE ILLOGICAL, INEFFECTIVE AND UNNECESSARY.
IN FACT, THE THEATRICS OF YOU WHO ARE WEARING MASKS TONIGHT IS ACTUALLY KIND OF HILARIOUS. SECOND, ZERO IS THE NUMBER OF MANDATES WE WILL TOLERATE IN THE FUTURE.
THERE WILL BE NO MORE MASK MANDATES AND NO VACCINE MANDATES EITHER.
WE WILL MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS RIGHTS ARE FIERCELY PROTECTED.
THANK YOU. OK, OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS TROYLENNE MOYER.
ROWLETT, TEXAS, AND I HAVE A DAUGHTER THAT'S ALREADY GRADUATED FROM ROWLETT HIGH SCHOOL, A JUNIOR THAT'S CURRENTLY AT ROWLETT HIGH SCHOOL AND A DAUGHTER WHO'S IN SEVENTH GRADE AT SCHRADE MIDDLE SCHOOL. SO AS YOU CAN TELL, THIS IS THE PATTERN THAT WE UNDERSTAND THAT MASKS ARE NOT ON THE AGENDA TONIGHT.
HOWEVER, MASK REQUIREMENT FOR GISD SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
IT WAS NONSENSE, AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT WAS AGAINST OUR GOVERNOR'S ORDERS.
I'VE REALLY THOUGHT A LOT ABOUT WHAT TO SAY IN THIS MEETING WITHOUT BEING TOO EMOTIONAL.
HOWEVER, THAT'S EXTREMELY DIFFICULT WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH CHILDREN PARENTS THAT ARE TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR CHILDREN.
AS A PARENT, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT DECISION FOR MY CHILD, WHETHER THEY WEAR A MASK, GET VACCINATED OR WHAT'S IN THEIR BEST INTEREST.
WHEN GISD DECIDED TO PUT THE MASK REQUIREMENT IN PLACE, YOU'RE ACTING AS THOUGH YOU ARE THE PARENT AND YOU'RE NOT.
THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM AND WILL ALWAYS BE A PROBLEM.
IF YOU WERE MY FRIEND OR MY KID'S TEACHER A YEAR AGO AND I TOLD YOU OR MY CHILD TOLD YOU THAT I MADE THEM WEAR A MASK FOR EIGHT TO 10 HOURS A DAY OVER THEIR MOUTH AND NOSE WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM.
YOU WOULD HAVE LITERALLY CALLED ME A CRAZY PARENT, AND IF THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD THE TEACHER, THE TEACHER WOULD HAVE CALLED CPS ON ME.
YEAH, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT GISD HAS DONE.
MAYBE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ALL THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS, BUT WE, AS PARENTS DO.
THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT EACH OF YOU THAT VOTED FOR MASK HAVE DONE.
I WON'T SUGARCOAT IT. IT WAS CHILD ABUSE.
YOU WOULDN'T OR SHOULDN'T ALLOW ANOTHER STUDENT TO BULLY MY STUDENT.
YET TEACHERS AND STAFF STILL CONTINUE TO BULLY AND HARASS MY CHILD OVER THE MASK, EVEN WITH AN EXEMPTION.
THIS WENT ON UP TO LAST WEEK EVEN AND MIGHT I ADD THE EXEMPTION FOR IT WAS SIMPLY A CYB COVER YOUR BUTT.
OUR CHILDREN HAVE SUFFERED MAJOR SOCIAL ANXIETY AND LOSS OF CONNECTIONS AND EMOTIONS WITH NOT ONLY THEIR FRIENDS BUT THEIR TEACHERS.
AND THAT'S THE FOUNDATION OF WHAT BUILDING TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND PARENTS FRIENDSHIPS ARE. ALL BECAUSE YOU CHOSE TO MASK THEM UP.
IRONICALLY, I SAT IN ANOTHER LOCAL BOARD MEETING LAST WEEK WHERE ONE OF YOUR BOARD MEMBERS SAID HE HOPED THEY WOULD EXTEND THE MASK REQUIREMENTS TO THE END OF THE YEAR.
YET THEY WERE SITTING CLOSE TO 1600 PEOPLE NOT WEARING A MASK.
SO THIS TELLS ME THAT THIS PERSON TRULY DOESN'T BELIEVE IN MASK OR HE WOULD BE WEARING ONE ALL THE TIME AT EVERY MEETING.
THEY'VE ALREADY ADDRESSED THE GARLAND NATATORIUM, SO I WON'T GO INTO THAT, BUT YOU BOARD MEMBERS WERE NOT PRACTICING WHAT YOU WERE PREACHING.
THIS IS THE VERY DEFINITION OF BEING A HYPOCRITE, AND THIS IS WHY, DEEP DOWN, YOU TRULY KNOW MASKS DON'T WORK AND YOU DON'T HAVE THE AUTHORITY OR THE POWER TO TELL ME WHAT IS BEST FOR MY CHILD.
OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.
TEACHERS, STAFF AND LEADERS, JUST AS YOURSELF, ALWAYS DEMAND RESPECT FROM PARENTS AND STUDENTS. HOWEVER, YOU DON'T GIVE THE SAME RESPECT TO US.
WE'RE NOT GOING AWAY. YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SHUT US UP.
IT'S SAD THAT MY 13 YEAR OLD HAS A BETTER PERSPECTIVE ON EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW IN THE WORLD THAN ADULTS.
GROWN ADULTS AND MOVING FORWARD, I HEARD THE WORD MIGHT BE USED THAT YOU STRONGLY RECOMMEND MASK.
I STILL BELIEVE THIS IS SHAMING.
THAT'S NOT FREEDOM. THE WORD SHOULD SAY MASK ARE OPTIONAL.
IF YOU WANT TO WEAR ONE, WEAR ONE.
THANK YOU. OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS DR.
[00:20:02]
SHARON MORGAN.GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS SHARON MORGAN.
I LIVE IN GARLAND. I'VE GOT ONE DAUGHTER IN GARLAND ISD, SO I GUESS YOU CAN PROBABLY FIGURE WHY I'M HERE AGAIN.
I WAS HERE IN AUGUST SAYING THE SAME THING, DIFFERENT.
I ONLY GOT ONE MINUTE, SO I GOT THREE MINUTES.
SO I'M, YOU KNOW, LIVING LARGE AT THIS MEETING.
I'M GOING TO WEAR MY GLASSES SO I CAN READ IT.
SO I DON'T FORGET. SO THE MANDATE IS ENDING TODAY, RIGHT? BUT HOW WILL WE EVEN KNOW THAT IT IS RIGHT? THE WEBSITE SAYS IT'S ENDING TODAY, BUT IT INCLUDES THE WORDS OR UNTIL FURTHER GUIDANCE IS PROVIDED. I TOOK THAT TO MEAN IT WAS GOING TO END EARLY, BUT NOW I'M THINKING, IS IT GOING TO KEEP GOING OR IS IT ENDING TODAY OR WHAT? SO I'M HERE TO SAY YOU SHOULD USE THE SAME LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION THAT YOU USED TO TELL US THAT THERE WAS A MANDATE TO SAY THAT THERE ISN'T ONE BECAUSE MY KID'S GOING TO GET TO SCHOOL. AND HOW'S SHE GOING TO KNOW, WEAR A MASK OR NOT WEAR A MASK EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS AN EXEMPTION.
SO I LOOKED UP SOME FACTS FROM YOUR WEBSITE, SO THE ENROLLMENT IS FIFTY THREE THOUSAND FIVE NINETY ONE. THERE ARE 60 ACTIVE CASES THAT WAS MONDAY.
THAT IS POINT ONE ONE ONE NINE FIVE NINE ONE PERCENT, NINETY SEVEN POINT NINE PERCENT ARE MASK. THAT IS FIFTY TWO THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE STUDENTS ARE MASKED FOR 60 ACTIVE CASES.
FOR THE STAFF, THERE ARE SEVEN THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND THREE STAFF, 16 ACTIVE CASES, AND ANY GUESSES WHAT THAT PERCENTAGE IS.
IT'S .222 ONE TWO NINE SIX SEVEN.
I'M A SCIENTIST. I'M PRETTY SURE YOU CAN FIGURE THAT OUT, RIGHT? NINETY EIGHT POINT NINE PERCENT OF THE STAFF IS MASKED.
THAT'S SEVEN THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN ARE WEARING MASKS FOR A POINT, SOMETHING SOMETHING PERCENTAGE.
SO TO PUT THAT IN PERSPECTIVE, IN 2018 BEFORE THE PANDEMIC.
FLU, THEY'RE ABOUT THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY ONE MILLION PEOPLE IN AMERICA.
FORTY FIVE MILLION PEOPLE GOT THE FLU.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT PERCENTAGE THAT IS? IT'S THIRTEEN POINT SIX PERCENT.
IT'S NOT POINT ONE, IT'S NOT POINT ZERO ONE, IT'S NOT POINT TWO.
IT IS THIRTEEN POINT SIX PERCENT AND NO ONE WAS WEARING MASKS FOR THAT.
SO WHAT? I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO SEND OUT AN EMAIL AGAIN, TELLING PEOPLE THAT THE MASK MANDATE IS OVER AND THEY CAN GO BACK TO BEING FREE.
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS AMANDA MADDOX.
MY NAME IS AMANDA MADDOX, 3506, CLOVER MEADOW DRIVE, GARLAND SEVEN FIVE ZERO FOUR THREE.
I HAVE ONE KID AT LAKEVIEW HIGH SCHOOL.
MY SON JUST GRADUATED FROM LAKEVIEW HIGH SCHOOL AND MY OLDEST DAUGHTER ALSO GRADUATED FROM LAKEVIEW HIGH SCHOOL.
SO I HAVE HAD CHILDREN IN GARLAND ISD EVER SINCE 2001.
SO THAT'S 20 YEARS OF GARLAND ISD.
I HAVE PULLED DATA FROM THE GARLAND ISD WEBSITE AND OTHER PUBLIC INFORMATION SITES TO ANALYZE THE USE OF PORTABLE BUILDINGS AT GISD, I AM ESTIMATING THERE ARE OVER 4000 STUDENTS IN PORTABLE BUILDINGS ACROSS ALL OF GISD AT ANY GIVEN TIME.
MY ESTIMATE SHOW THAT MY ZIP CODE 75043 HAS 17 MORE PORTABLE BUILDINGS THAN ANY OTHER GISD ZIP CODE.
SEVEN FIVE ZERO FOUR THREE HAS ABOUT 43 PORTABLES.
SEVEN FIVE ZERO FOUR ZERO IS THE SECOND MOST WITH TWENTY SIX PORTABLES.
HOWEVER, SEVEN FIVE ZERO FOUR THREE IS NOT THE MOST POPULATED ZIP CODE IN GISD.
SEVEN FIVE ZERO FOUR ZERO IS THE MOST POPULATED.
PORTABLES WERE SUPPOSED TO BE TEMPORARY WHEN THEY WERE BROUGHT TO TOLER ELEMENTARY ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO.
MY OLDEST DAUGHTER SPENT FIRST AND THIRD GRADE IN PORTABLES AT TOLER.
SO LET'S TALK SAFETY FOR A MOMENT.
TORNADOES DESTROY PORTABLE BUILDINGS MORE EASILY THAN CONCRETE BUILDINGS.
BULLETS GO THROUGH PORTABLE BUILDINGS MORE EASILY THAN CONCRETE BUILDINGS.
THE GISD WEBSITE SAYS HERE AT GISD, WE PROVIDE THE BEST LEARNING ENVIRONMENT POSSIBLE FOR OUR STUDENTS.
HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF OUR FEATURES.
THEN IT LISTS SECURE ENTRY AREAS FOR ALL OUR BUILDINGS.
HOWEVER, THE PUBLIC CAN BYPASS THE FRONT ENTRY DESK TO GAIN ACCESS TO THESE PORTABLE
[00:25:04]
BUILDINGS. LAKEVIEW HIGH SCHOOL HAS 10 PORTABLES, AND IT'S PACKED SHOULDER TO SHOULDER IN THE HALLWAYS. THE GISD SCHOOL BOARD SHOULD BE TRYING TO SOLVE THE OVERCROWDING PROBLEM.THE PORTABLES ARE A CLEAR SIGN OF HAVING TOO MANY STUDENTS AT EACH CAMPUS.
I CHALLENGE YOU TO SOLVE THE OVERCROWDING PROBLEM BECAUSE YOU'RE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN.
IF GISD CAN AFFORD TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN AN INDOOR POOL, THEY CAN AFFORD TO REMOVE THESE PORTABLE BUILDINGS.
THANK YOU. ALSO, THE DATA THAT I PULLED, I EMAILED TO THE SCHOOL BOARD.
I CAN'T READ THE WRITING ON THE FIRST NAME, BUT I THINK IT'S AGUILAR.
HI, MY NAME IS HOSUSANNAH AGUILAR, AND I LIVE IN GARLAND AND I DO HAVE A CHILD IN ELEMENTARY, SO I WILL BE JUST SPEAKING ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE SO FAR FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
AND I WANT TO START OFF BY SAYING THAT I GENERALLY TEND TO HAVE A VERY BUSY SCHEDULE, SO I'M HERE BECAUSE MY SON'S WELL-BEING IS IMPORTANT TO ME.
AND JUST TO PUT IN PERSPECTIVE, I DO HAVE A FULL TIME JOB.
ME AND MY HUSBAND HAVE SIDE BUSINESSES THAT WE ATTEND TO IN OUR SPARE TIME.
OF COURSE, MY CHILD AND THEN WE HAVE MULTIPLE PETS TO CARE AFTER RIGHT.
SO I COULD BE DOING MANY OTHER THINGS OTHER THAN BEING HERE, YOU KNOW? BUT I FIND MYSELF HERE TODAY BECAUSE I DID WRITE TWO EMAILS.
ONE OF THEM WENT OUT THREE TIMES.
THEY WERE FORWARDED TO EACH OF THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, INCLUDING THE SUPERINTENDENT, AND ALL THEY GOT BACK WAS SILENCE.
A GENERAL RESPONSE. THANK YOU.
THE FIRST EMAIL INCLUDED A SERIES OF QUESTIONS, AND THE SECOND EMAIL WAS A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE HARASSMENT THAT MY SON EXPERIENCED BY SCHOOL STAFF PRIOR AND AFTER THE MASKING REQUIREMENT.
IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE WAS GISD TRAINING PROVIDED TO ALL THE SCHOOL STAFF PRIOR TO THE SCHOOL BEGINNING.
SO HOWEVER, THERE'S SOMETHING WENT WRONG OR IT NEEDS TO BE, OR THE TRAINING NEEDS TO BE PROVIDED TO THE SCHOOL STAFF.
IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED SO THAT THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE NOW THE MASKS ARE GOING TO BE OPTIONAL.
SO YOU KNOW, THERE'S GOING TO BE EITHER PARENTS OR STAFF THAT ARE GOING TO BE UNHAPPY THAT THIS IS GOING ON, AND I DON'T WANT MY SON TO BE HARASSED AGAIN.
NOW. SO I FULLY SUPPORT THE FACT THAT THE MASK REQUIREMENT WILL EXPIRE TODAY, AS THIS REQUIREMENT WAS USELESS AND UNNECESSARY AND CLEARLY ONLY IMPLEMENTED FOR POLITICAL REASONS.
I DO HOPE THAT THIS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS ARE NOW SUPPORTED BY THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS OR THE SUPERINTENDENT IN THE FUTURE.
OTHERWISE, WE WILL NEED ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS THAT I DID FORWARD IN THOSE EMAILS.
GISD PARENTS AND TAXPAYERS WILL BE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS AND THEN JUST TO KEEP IT IN THE RECORD, I DO WANT TO GO OVER THOSE QUESTIONS THAT I DID FORWARD IN ONE OF THOSE EMAILS.
ONE OF THE QUESTIONS WAS WHAT DATA WAS USED TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL BOARD'S DECISION TO ENFORCE A MASK REQUIREMENT ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
WHAT NEW DATA IS BEING CONSIDERED TO EVALUATE THAT DECISION AND THEN EVERYTHING ELSE, IT WAS PUT INTO DETAIL IN THOSE EMAILS.
SO Y'ALL HAVE EVERYTHING ELSE.
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS BRITTNEY QUICK.
GOOD AFTERNOON. NICE TO SEE YOU ALL IN PERSON THIS TIME.
THANK YOU FOR HEARING ME TODAY.
MY NAME IS BRITTNEY QUICK. I HAVE TWO CHILDREN IN GARLAND ISD, AS WELL AS A SECOND GENERATION GRADUATION FROM GISD, BOTH MYSELF AND MY MOTHER.
[00:30:02]
MY KIDS ARE IN ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL.MY ELDEST IS AUTISTIC, DYSLEXIC AND SPEECH DELAYED.
IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT MASKS ARE NOT ON THE AGENDA, BUT AS THE THEME SEEMS TO BE, I'M HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT THAT, THAT YOU INTEND TO LET THE CURRENT MASK MANDATE LAPSE DESPITE DALLAS COUNTY STILL BEING AT CODE RED RISK LEVEL.
I KNOW I CANNOT CHANGE YOUR MIND ON THAT TODAY, BUT I BEG OF YOU TO PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON THE NUMBERS AND CONSIDER REINSTATING THE MASK MANDATE SHOULD THOSE NUMBERS START TO CLIMB AGAIN. DURING THE TIME OF THE MASK MANDATES THE NUMBERS DECREASED FROM WELL OVER TWENTY ONE HUNDRED CASES IN LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS TO JUST A FEW ACROSS THE DISTRICT SEVEN WEEKS LATER. WE CANNOT DENY THAT IT HAS GOTTEN BETTER BOTH IN THE AREA AND WITHIN THE DISTRICT.
OF THOSE TWENTY ONE HUNDRED CASES, THAT ONLY ACCOUNTS FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
IT DOES NOT INCLUDE FAMILY MEMBERS OR ANYTHING OF THAT ILK.
A FRIEND OF MINE RECENTLY, A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, GOT SICK, BROUGHT IT HOME FROM SCHOOL, AND HER ENTIRE FAMILY OF FIVE WENT DOWN, INCLUDING A TWO MONTH OLD NEWBORN WHO WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR A SHORT PERIOD.
JUST LIKE HAND-WASHING AND SANITIZING ALONE IS NOT EFFECTIVE BY ITSELF.
IN ORDER TO HELP MITIGATE THE SPREAD OF ANY COMMUNICABLE DISEASE, WE MUST BATTLE IT FROM ALL ANGLES AND NOT JUST ONES THAT BRING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF CONTROVERSY.
IN GENERAL, SCHOOLS SPREAD, ILLNESSES ARE DOWN.
I HAVEN'T. THERE HAVE BEEN VERY FEW OF MY FRIENDS THAT HAVE REPORTED FLU OR BACK TO SCHOOL SICKNESS, AND I ENJOY HEARING THAT THEIR CHILDREN HAVE NOT BEEN SICK.
CAREGIVERS ENTRUST THE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN TO YOUR HANDS ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DAYS OF THE YEAR. THEIR SAFETY AND THEIR HEALTH.
WHILE YOUR JOB IS TO EDUCATE, YOU CANNOT EDUCATE CHILDREN IF THEY ARE HOME SICK OR GRIEVING A FAMILY MEMBER.
THERE IS ALWAYS AN UPTAKE IN ILLNESS AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR DUE TO THE SEASON CHANGE.
TRAVELING FOR HOLIDAYS, FESTIVALS AND OTHER FALL AND WINTER GATHERINGS.
THE ENDING OF THIS MANDATE JUST BEFORE THE HOLIDAY SEASON, WHERE MANY DID NOT TRAVEL LAST YEAR AND WILL BE THIS YEAR, IS JUST POOR TIMING.
THERE IS THE LAW AND THERE IS WHAT IS RIGHT.
OFTEN THESE DO NOT ALIGN, BUT WE ALWAYS HAVE TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR OUR FUTURE, INCLUDING CHALLENGING, PROBLEMATIC RULES AND CHANGING THEM.
THE CURRENT MASK MANDATE BAN IS NOT ACTUALLY A LAW.
IT IS NO WAY TO ENFORCE IT, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE LAWSUITS PENDING ABOUT THAT.
IN THE MEANTIME, WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AT ALL COSTS.
MY STEPDAUGHTER WAS IN THE SCHOOL SHOOTING IN ARLINGTON LAST MONTH.
AND THE TIME THAT I COULDN'T GET A HOLD OF HER WAS THE SCARIEST THING.
I TRUST THE SAFETY OF THEM NOT GETTING SHOT IN A SCHOOL PREMISES THE SAME AS I DO THEIR HEALTH OF NOT BRINGING HOME A VIRUS THAT COULD KILL AN EIGHTY SEVEN YEAR OLD.
A FRIEND OF MINE IN ARLINGTON IS CURRENTLY FEELING THAT PAIN OF HAVING LOST HER FATHER BECAUSE HER NINE YEAR OLD BROUGHT IT HOME.
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS CHRISTINA OCHOA.
HI, MY NAME IS CHRISTINA OCHOA, AND I LIVE IN ROWLETT, TEXAS.
I HAVE A NINTH GRADER AND A SIXTH GRADER.
I WANT TO BEGIN BY STATING AND TO ALSO REMIND EACH OF YOU THAT I PRESENT TODAY TO EXERCISE MY RIGHT TO THE FIRST AMENDMENT OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND MY RIGHT TO PEACEABLY ASSEMBLE HAS NOT BEEN OUTLAWED DESPITE THE RECENT POLITICAL RHETORIC OF OUR GOVERNMENT DUE TO COMMENTS FROM THE NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION.
I PERSONALLY DON'T ACCEPT THEIR HALF APOLOGY AND CALLING PARENTS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES WHO VOICE THEIR CONCERNS DOMESTIC TERRORISTS.
GISD SHOULD NOT FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THE NSBA.
I WOULD LIKE TO ALSO REMIND EACH OF YOU THAT YOU ARE NOT ABOVE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT AVOID GRIEVANCES FROM THE CITIZENS WHO ELECTED YOU.
THIS MASK REQUIREMENT IS INDEED A MANDATE FROM GARLAND ISD.
THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WORD MANDATE AND REQUIREMENT.
I AM AWARE THAT THE MASK REQUIREMENT IS NOT EVEN ON THE AGENDA FOR TODAY AND THAT GISD WILL LET IT EXPIRE.
I WOULD LIKE TO BRING IT UP ANYWAY IN CASE A SPECIAL SESSION IS SCHEDULED SO THAT YOU HAVE ME AND THIS GROUP OF PARENTS BEHIND ME FRESH ON YOUR MINDS.
BECAUSE WE SIMPLY WILL NOT LET THIS GO.
I HAVE TWO CHILDREN THAT TWO CHILDREN IN GARLAND ISD SCHOOLS AGES 11 AND 14, SO THAT MEANS MY FAMILY HAS BEEN A GARLAND ISD FAMILY SINCE 2012, AND AS A TAXPAYING CITIZEN, I EXPECT YOU TO BE UNBIASED.
THE PERSONAL CHOICES OF EACH BOARD MEMBER SHOULD NOT DICTATE WHAT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT DOES. FROM JUNE 7TH TO AUGUST 31ST, MASKS WERE OPTIONAL.
THEN TOWARDS THE END OF AUGUST OF THIS YEAR GARLAND ISD DECIDED TO GO AGAINST GOVERNOR
[00:35:06]
ABBOTT'S GA38 EXECUTIVE ORDER AND REQUIRE MASKS UNLESS YOU GET AN EXEMPTION APPROVAL.STARTING SEPTEMBER 1ST, THE EXEMPTION APPROVALS IS NOT EVEN REQUIRED IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. BUT YET YOU STILL WANTED TO CONTROL PARENTS BY MAKING THEM APPLY FOR ONE IF THEY WANTED THEIR KID TO BE MASK FREE.
IT IS COMPLETELY INTRUSIVE AND COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.
THE ONES WHO DID GET AN EXEMPTION, LIKE MY KIDS, HAVE BEEN WATCHED OR TRACKED BY CERTAIN TEACHERS OF THEIR SCHOOLS REPEATEDLY, MEANING THEY ARE MARKED PRESENT, NO MASK IN SKYWARD. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION AND MY CHILDREN FEEL SINGLED OUT.
I DO NOT WANT THESE MARKS ON THEIR TRANSCRIPT.
IF PRESENT, NO MASK IS ACROSS THE BOARD FOR ALL TEACHERS AND IN EVERY CLASS, THEN WHY ARE BOTH OF MY CHILDREN ONLY MARKED BY CERTAIN TEACHERS? WHY IS THAT? I ONLY RELY ON GARLAND ISD FOR THE EDUCATION OF MY KIDS AND NOT THEIR HEALTH CARE.
NOBODY HAS TAKEN MASK AWAY FROM THOSE THAT WANT TO WEAR THEM.
YOU CAN ALL UNDERSTAND, RIGHT? WITH PICTURES CIRCULATING ON SOCIAL MEDIA OF MANY OF YOU MASKLESS AT THE NATATORIUM TAKING PICTURES IN CLOSE PROXIMITY OF EACH OTHER.
ONLY TWO WEEKENDS AGO, I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY FRUSTRATION AND WITH THE HYPOCRISY OF MOST OF THIS BOARD.
OK. THANK YOU, MECHELLE, WERE THERE ANY OTHER CARDS THAT WERE MISSED? THAT WILL END THE PUBLIC COMMENT SECTION AND THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO SHOWED UP FOR THAT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT.
WE WILL NOW PROCEED TO ITEM NUMBER FIVE.
BOARD THAT IS INFORMATION ITEMS. NUMBER A ONE IS RECOGNIZED LEADERSHIP ROWLETT CLASS 30 SHERESE LIGHTFOOT.
[IV.A. Evidence of Excellence ]
GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT MILLER, BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND DR.LOPEZ. I AM HONORED TO STAND BEFORE YOU TO INTRODUCE THE LEADERSHIP CLASS ROWLETT, THE PHENOMENAL CLASS 30.
WE HAD A GREAT DAY LEARNING TODAY ABOUT THE DISTRICT AND THEY WERE ABLE TO SEE GARLAND ROWLETT AND SACHSE AND HEAR ABOUT THE GREAT THINGS HAPPENING IN GARLAND ISD.
THEY ARE ATTENDING THE BOARD MEETING TONIGHT AS A FINAL STOP OF THEIR DAY, GAINING KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE DISTRICT OPPORTUNITIES AND OPERATIONS.
I'M HAPPY TO HAVE THE REPRESENTATIVE FROM THEIR CLASS, MS. LIBBY TUCKER, WHO IS THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ROWLETT HERE TO SHARE HER EXPERIENCE ABOUT THEIR TOUR TODAY.
SO PLEASE, LET'S WELCOME MS. LIBBY. [APPLAUSE] GOOD EVENING, BOARD MEMBERS, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALLOWING US TO SPEND OUR DAY WITH YOU, AND SHERESE WAS GREAT.
SHE PLANNED A GREAT DAY FOR US, GAVE US A GREAT TOUR AND A LOT OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISTRICT. AND I WOULD JUST SAY SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR OUR CLASS WERE CERTAINLY THE GILBREATH-REED CAREER AND TECHNICAL CENTER.
I MEAN, AS AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPER, IT'S SO EXCITING TO SEE THAT YOU'RE PREPARING NOT THE WORKFORCE OF TOMORROW, BUT THE WORKFORCE OF TODAY.
SO THESE KIDS CAN LEAVE WITHOUT DEBT AND HAVE A GREAT CAREER AHEAD OF THEM AND GO INTO OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES TO DO WORK THAT'S NEEDED RIGHT NOW.
SO I THINK WE KIND OF AGREED WE WISH WE WOULD HAVE HAD THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL.
AND CERTAINLY SOME OF PROBABLY CHILDREN OF SOME OF OUR STUDENTS AS WELL ARE THINKING AHEAD ABOUT THAT CAREER PATH.
THE FOOD SERVICES AREA WAS CERTAINLY IMPRESSIVE, AND IT'S SO GREAT TO KNOW THAT EVERY CHILD IS BEING FED TWO MEALS A DAY AND THAT YOU'VE GOT THE CAPACITY AND THE GREAT EQUIPMENT THERE TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN AND PROVIDE FOR THEM.
AND CERTAINLY FINALLY, THE NATATORIUM, I THINK, WAS THE OTHER HIGHLIGHT FOR US JUST TO SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING THERE AND THE POTENTIAL ALSO AGAIN, FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE COMMUNITY WHEN YOU KNOW THAT IT'S BRINGING TEAMS IN FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO COMPETE THERE. AND SO THEY'LL BE STAYING IN OUR HOTELS AND EATING IN OUR RESTAURANTS AND SHOPPING NEARBY AS WELL.
SO I JUST THINK WE HAD A GREAT TIME TODAY AND JUST THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO TOUR YOUR FACILITIES. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, LIBBY, WE KNOW THAT WE ARE THE GARLAND ISD, THE GISD EFFECT AND WHAT THEY LEARNED TODAY, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THEIR
[00:40:01]
BUSINESSES, WITH THEIR FAMILIES, WITH THE COMMUNITY.AND THEY LEFT EXCITED AND VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE THINGS HAPPENING IN GARLAND ISD.
SO AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT THE CLASS OF 30 TO THE BOARD.
SO IF YOU'RE A MEMBER OF LEADERSHIP ROWLETT CLASS 30, WILL YOU PLEASE STAND TO BE RECOGNIZED? [APPLAUSE] AND I WANT TO GIVE, THANK YOU SO MUCH, I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A SPECIAL APPRECIATION TO MICHAEL, WHO IS THE LEADER OF THE LEADERSHIP ROWLETT CLASS.
IT'S BEEN AN HONOR WORKING WITH YOU AND SERVING AND SO THANK YOU FOR THE EDUCATION DAY AND FOR BRINGING THE CLASS TO GARLAND.
THANK YOU. YOU'RE WELCOME. [APPLAUSE] OK, WE'LL GO WHOOPS.
OK, WE'LL GO TO ITEM 4A2 RECOGNIZE GISD'S FINANCE TEAM FINANCE DEPARTMENT.
THEY ARE A TEAM. MR. MILLER, BOARD OF TRUSTEES, DR.
LOPEZ, AGAIN, FOR MY VOICE, I COACHED SIX AND EIGHT YEAR OLDS LAST NIGHT AND I FEEL GREAT. IT'S JUST MY VOICE FROM DOING A SCRIMMAGE PRACTICE, BUT IT'S REALLY OUR BUDGET TEAM THAT'S GOING BE RECOGNIZED FOR THIS.
BRANDY MAYO OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BUDGET, CRYSTAL ROBINS, OUR DIRECTOR OF BUDGET AND POSITION CONTROL, NICOLE HERNANDEZ, OUR BUDGET COORDINATOR.
MATTHEW ORTIZ, OUR BUDGET ANALYST.
AND ANGELIA JOHNSON, OUR SECRETARY UPSTAIRS.
AND WHAT THIS RECOGNITION IS FOR, FOR THE SECOND TIME EVER IN GARLAND ISD AND FOR TWO YEARS IN A ROW, OUR BUDGET TEAM HAS EARNED THE MERITORIOUS BUDGET AWARD FROM THE ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BUSINESS OFFICIALS INTERNATIONAL, AND IT IS DONE AND RECOGNIZED FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHO MODEL, PRACTICE AND IMPLEMENT BEST BUDGETING PRACTICES.
THERE'S ABOUT A SIX PAGE CHECKLIST THAT YOU GO THROUGH TO SUBMIT FOR THIS AND RESULTS IN A MULTI 100 PAGE DOCUMENT THAT IS SUBMITTED THAT TELLS THE HISTORY OF GARLAND ISD.
IT SHOWS PROJECTIONS FOR GARLAND ISD ACADEMICS OF GARLAND ISD AND ALSO TALKS ABOUT OUR CITIES THAT MAKE US UP.
AND SO IT IS A FULL PACKET THAT IS PUT TOGETHER SUBMITTED.
IT IS REVIEWED BY INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS, THAT EVALUATE THAT TO MAKE SURE WE'RE MEETING THAT CRITERIA, BUT ALSO SHARE THE STORY OF GARLAND ISD AND WHAT THE FUTURE LOOKS LIKE.
AND SO I CANNOT THANK OUR BUDGET TEAM ENOUGH AND THE ANALOGY I'M GOING TO USE.
IF YOU'VE HEARD OF THE COFFEE BEAN, WHEN YOU LOOK AT OUR BUDGET TEAM, THERE'S MANY CHALLENGES THAT FACE THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT BUDGETS.
IT'S ALMOST LIKE BEING IN BOILING WATER AT TIMES.
AND SO WHEN I LOOK AT OUR BUDGET TEAM, YOU KNOW THAT IMPACT IT HAS.
YOU KNOW, IF IT'S A CARROT THAT BOILING WATER IMPACTS, THE CARROT MAKES IT WEAK AND SOFT.
IF IT'S AN EGG, IT HARDENS THAT SHELL.
AND IF OUR BUDGET TEAM GOT HARDENED ON THE INSIDE, WORKING WITH OUR CAMPUS PRINCIPALS IN OUR DEPARTMENTS, IT WOULD NOT BE A FUN EXPERIENCE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
WITH THAT COFFEE BEAN IMPACTS EVERYTHING ELSE AROUND IT.
AND SO OUR BUDGET TEAM DOES THAT.
AND IF YOU SEE THEM AND WORK WITH THEM, THERE'S ALWAYS A SMILE ON THEIR FACE.
SOLUTIONS ORIENTED AND REALLY SUPPORT OUR DEPARTMENTS AND CAMPUSES TO SUPPORT THE KIDS IN OUR DISTRICT. AND SO I DO HAVE THE HONOR TO RECOGNIZE THEM AND I'D LIKE TO INVITE THEM UP. [APPLAUSE] AND I'LL TURN IT OVER TO MS. MAYO IF SHE WANTS TO SAY A FEW WORDS.
THANK YOU, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY ONE THING.
GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT MILLER BOARD OF TRUSTEES DR.
LOPEZ, I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH AS LEADERS OF THIS DISTRICT FOR GIVING US AN ENVIRONMENT THAT CREATES OPPORTUNITY FOR EXCELLENCE.
AND THANKS FOR THIS TEAM FOR BRINGING EXCELLENCE TO THE DISTRICT.
[APPLAUSE] ALL RIGHT.ONE MORE THREE TWO ONE.
[00:45:04]
THANK YOU, DR. RINGO. THANK YOU.OK, THANK YOU. WE NOW GO TO ITEM 4A3, RECOGNIZE THE CCMR TEAM DR.
SUSANNA RUSSELL. GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT MILLER, TRUSTEES SUPERINTENDENT LOPEZ, IT'S NO SECRET TO ANY OF US THAT MAGIC HAPPENS EVERY DAY IN OUR SCHOOLS AS OUR INCREDIBLE STAFF MEMBERS CHALLENGE, INTERACT AND ENCOURAGE OUR STUDENTS THE IMPACT OF DEEPLY COMMITTED PEOPLE BRINGING A TEAM TOGETHER TO REMOVE OBSTACLES AND CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS IS THE GARLAND ISD EFFECT.
THIS EVENING, IT IS MY DEEP PLEASURE TO ASK DANAY TAYLOR, WHO IS ONE OF OUR CCMR CENTRAL OFFICE NUMBER ONE CHEERLEADERS AND ORGANIZERS TO JOIN ME AS WE SHINE THE SPOTLIGHT ON OUR 2021 HIGH SCHOOL CCMR ADMINISTRATORS AND THEY ARE REPRESENTING THEIR TEAM OF ROCK STARS.
THEY HAVE FORGED A COALITION OF EXCELLENCE ON THEIR CAMPUSES THAT HAS CREATED NOT ONLY A NEW CCMR STANDARD FOR GARLAND, BUT FOR REGION 10 AND FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS.
TRUSTEE IS IN 2018 YOU SET A REALLY LOFTY GOAL THAT 80 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS GRADUATING WOULD MEET CCMR BY 2025.
AT THAT TIME, OUR CCMR RATES HAD BEEN IN THE MID-40S FOR MANY YEARS, AND THE CLASS OF 2017 ONLY HAD 12 STUDENTS WHO EARNED AN INDUSTRY BASED CERTIFICATION.
YOU SET THE BENCHMARK AND THESE CCMR ADMINISTRATORS, IF YOU GUYS COULD JOIN ME UP HERE, YAY. [APPLAUSE] THEY ARE INDEED THE A-TEAM.
THESE TEAMS SMASHED THAT GOAL.
IN FACT, THE CLASS OF 2021 WILL HAVE AT LEAST EIGHTY ONE PERCENT OF THEIR GRADUATING CLASS MEET CCMR WAY BEFORE 2025.
IN FACT, THEY ALSO LED THEIR GRADUATING CLASSES TO EARN AN A AT EVERY SINGLE HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS, WHEN FEWER THAN HALF OF THE STUDENTS WERE ATTENDING SCHOOL AND LEARNING IN PERSON. SUCCESS LIKE THIS BEGINS WITH A VISION OF EXCELLENCE WHICH YOU SET AND COMES FROM DEEP COLLABORATION, A RELENTLESS SPIRIT AND INNOVATION THAT IN TURN CREATES AN EVEN HIGHER EXPECTATION FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS.
PRESIDENT MILLER, HONORABLE TRUSTEES AND DR.
LOPEZ, I PRESENT TO YOU OUR 2021 HIGH SCHOOL CCMR ADMINISTRATORS WHO ARE REPRESENTING THEIR LARGER CAMPUS TEAMS TONIGHT.
THESE OUTSTANDING LEADERS ARE SHINING EXAMPLES OF THE GISD EFFECT IN ACTION, CHANGING LIVES, CHANGING FUTURES AND CREATING LIVELIHOODS.
AND THEY'RE HERE EVEN THOUGH TODAY WAS PSAT DAY AND THEY WERE AT THEIR SCHOOLS TILL THE LAST MINUTE, WRAPPING UP THOSE THINGS.
SO IT IS MY GREAT JOY TO PERSONALLY THANK YOU ALL.
DO YOU WANT TO HAND THEM OUT, CAROL AND MARQUIS AND JAMES? OOPS, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT.
JAMES SELLERS [LAUGHTER] AND ADAM AND ASHLEY, WHERE'S ASHLEY, CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE AMAZING, AMAZING JOB YOU DID.
[00:50:30]
THREE, TWO, ONE AND THEN YOU GOT IT.MOVING ON TO OUR AGENDA ITEM B 1 GOING THE EXTRA MILE SHERESE LIGHTFOOT.
[IV.B. Going the Extra Mile (GEMs)]
GOOD EVENING AGAIN, PRESIDENT MILLER BOARD OF TRUSTEES DR.LOPEZ. I WOULD LIKE TO BRING TO THE PODIUM PHILIP WIGGINS AND MS. CAROLINA. WILL YOU ALL PLEASE JOIN ME AT THE PODIUM? [APPLAUSE] OUR HONOREES TONIGHT ARE PHILIP WIGGINS, GISD AQUATICS MANAGER AND CAROLINA BRAMBILA.
I'M SORRY, HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE.
HOW YOU LIKE THAT? THE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT FOR THE NATATORIUM.
GARLAND ISD IS BLESSED TO HAVE OUR NEW STATE OF THE ART GARLAND ISD NATATORIUM.
OUR NATATORIUM SERVES AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL TRAINING AND COMPETITIVE VENUE FOR OUR DISTRICT AND WAS PART OF OUR 2014 BOND.
WELL, WE KNOW THAT THIS FACILITY IS BEAUTIFUL, BUT GUESS WHAT? IT CAN'T RUN BY ITSELF, SO YOU MAY WONDER, WELL, HOW DOES IT RUN? THESE SPACES BEFORE YOU ARE THE ONES WHO TAKE DAY IN AND DAY OUT TO MAKE THE FACILITY GREAT? PHILIP AND CAROLINA SPENT AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF TIME EACH WEEK DOING THINGS BEHIND THE SCENES THAT PEOPLE DON'T EVEN RECOGNIZE, LIKE CREATING WORKOUTS.
WE WERE IN THE WORKOUT ROOM TODAY AND SAW THE AMAZING FACILITIES THEY MAKE, LINEUPS THEY WORK WITH, THE STUDENTS, THEY DO LAUNDRY AND ETC.
THEY SPEND HOURS RECRUITING AND PLANNING TRAVEL MEETS.
THEY SPEND NUMEROUS HOURS WITH MEETINGS WITH STAFF AND STUDENTS TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY PROVIDE THE BEST FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND TEAMS. EVEN TODAY, YOU GUYS TOOK TIME OUT OF YOUR SCHEDULE TO GIVE A TOUR TO LEADERSHIP ROWLETT WE AFFECTIONATELY SAY THAT WE ARE THE GISD EFFECT AND THAT WE'RE IMPACTING LIVES AND CHANGING FUTURES.
WELL, YOU'RE NOT ONLY DOING THAT, BUT YOU'RE ALSO SAVING LIVES.
THANK YOU FOR TEACHING OUR SECOND GRADERS OUR WATER SAFETY CLASSES THAT ARE DESIGNED TO PROMOTE SAFETY AWARENESS AROUND BODIES OF WATERS.
THESE PROACTIVE MEASURES AND LESSONS WILL SAVE LIVES.
JUDY CAMPBELL, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, SAYS PHILIP CAME TO GISD WITH THE PROMISE OF A NATATORIUM. HE'S GOT THE GREATEST PATIENCE WAITING AND PLANNING FOR THE DAY.
HE PATIENTLY COACHED THE TEAMS HE ALREADY HAD WHEN HE GOT TO GARLAND AND PATIENTLY PLANNED AND STARTED RECRUITING FOR THE DAY HE OPENED THE NATATORIUM.
HE AND HIS STAFF [INAUDIBLE] WITH ATHLETICS FOR FULL SEMESTER, WAITING FOR THE DAY THEY COULD GET INTO THEIR NEW SHINY FACILITY, STILL RECRUITING, STILL PLANNING AND COACHING TWO TEAMS THAT ALREADY WERE HIRED.
ALL OF THE STAFF CAME TO WORK WITH THE EXPECTATION OF WILL WE MOVE IN THIS MONTH? AND LET'S TALK ABOUT CAROLINA.
YOU CAN'T SEE HER SMILE BEHIND THE MASK, BUT IT'S THERE.
I'M NOT SURE IF SHE'S EVEN TAKEN A BREATH.
SHE WAS FULL OF QUESTIONS, PATIENTLY LEARNING AND BEING TUTORED BY THE ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS.
SHE'S ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT YOU JUST WANT TO BE AROUND BECAUSE OF HER ENTHUSIASM AND EAGERNESS TO LEARN.
JUDY ALSO SAYS PHILIP IS ONE OF THE MOST PATIENT AND ORGANIZED COACHES SHE'S EVER KNOWN, AND SHE'S SO HAPPY FOR THEM, THE ENTIRE STAFF, BECAUSE THEY'RE TRULY GEMS. WE WANT TO TAKE THE TIME TO SAY THANK YOU.
WE KNOW THAT YOU GUYS DON'T NEARLY HEAR IT ENOUGH, BUT WE APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO EVERY SINGLE DAY AND WE WANT YOU TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED.
YOU ARE DEFINITELY THE RIPPLE EFFECT IN OUR DISTRICT, AND YOU BOTH ARE TRULY GEMS. PLEASE HELP ME CONGRATULATE OUR GEMS FOR THIS MONTH, PHILIP AND CAROLINA.
[00:55:08]
AND YOU'RE RECEIVING A GEM, THEY'RE RECEIVING A BEAUTIFUL GEM.LET ME HEAR YOU SAY MR. MILLER. CONGRATULATIONS.
AND I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE YOUR FAMILY FOR BEING HERE TODAY, IF YOU'RE FAMILY, WILL YOU PLEASE STAND AND BE RECOGNIZED. [APPLAUSE] WELL, THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. I THINK CAROLINA WILL AGREE THAT I'M NOT THAT ORGANIZED, [LAUGHTER] BUT WITHOUT HER AND THE REST OF THE STAFF, WE WOULDN'T BE SUCCESSFUL.
AND SO I APPRECIATE THEM COMING IN EVERY DAY AND WORKING HARD THEY TRULY CARE ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS.
AND THAT'S WHERE WE'RE ALL BLESSED.
SO THANK YOU AGAIN. [APPLAUSE] OK, GREAT, LET'S GO TO ITEM 4C, THE INTRODUCTION OF DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS, DR.
[IV.C. Introduction of District Administrators - Dr. Gradyne E. Brown]
GRADYNE BROWN.GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT MILLER, BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT LOPEZ, IT IS MY PLEASURE, MY PRIVILEGE THIS EVENING TO INTRODUCE TO YOU THE GARLAND ISD NEW DIRECTOR OF FOOD SERVICES JENNIFER MILLER.
JENNIFER HAS BEEN WITH GISD FOR SOME TIME NOW.

THE SCHOOL NUTRITION ASSOCIATION SHE IS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE TEXAS SCHOOL NUTRITION ASSOCIATION, SCHOOL NUTRITION ASSOCIATION AND AMERICAN COMMODITY DISTRIBUTION ASSOCIATION AND THE CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA'S HEALTHY KIDS COLLABORATIVE.
LOPEZ AND GISD COMMUNITY I PRESENT OUR NEW FOOD SERVICES DIRECTOR JENNIFER MILLER.
[APPLAUSE] [INAUDIBLE] THANK YOU VERY MUCH, DR.
BROWN, AND GOOD EVENING, BOARD PRESIDENT MILLER.
DR. LOPEZ AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, I AM HONORED TO BE THE NEW DIRECTOR OF STUDENT NUTRITION SERVICES.
AS DR. BROWN SAID, I'VE BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT FOR SOME TIME, AS SHE SAID, AND I'M THRILLED TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD SUCH AMAZING PEOPLE IN DOING OUR PART TO SUPPORT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
WE ALL KNOW THAT A HUNGRY CHILD CANNOT ADEQUATELY FOCUS ON THEIR SCHOOLWORK, AND OUR DEPARTMENT TAKES THIS TO HEART EACH AND EVERY DAY.
I'M ALSO PROUD OF OUR DEPARTMENT'S RESPONSE TO CHALLENGES FACED DURING THE PANDEMIC, AND I WOULD LIKE TO PERSONALLY THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND RECOGNITION OF OUR STAFF.
ALTHOUGH UNIQUE CHALLENGES HAVE PRESENTED THEMSELVES AGAIN THIS YEAR STUDENT NUTRITION IS
[01:00:04]
GRATEFUL TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE FREE MEALS TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS THIS SCHOOL YEAR. ON A PERSONAL NOTE, AND I HAD THIS PLANNED BEFORE DR.RUSSELL'S PRESENTATION, BUT BOTH OF MY SONS BEGAN GARLAND ISD WHEN THEY WERE IN KINDERGARTEN. CONNOR, MY OLDEST, IS NOW A COLLEGE FRESHMAN, AND PATRICK, WHO IS HERE TONIGHT, IS A JUNIOR.
HE'S IN YEAR TWO OF THE FIRE ACADEMY PROGRAM AT THE GRCTC AND HAS FOUND HIS CALLING.
I AM HONORED AND GRATEFUL TO WORK IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT GIVES THEIR STUDENTS SUCH AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES AND ENSURE THEY'RE BOTH COLLEGE CAREER AND MILITARY READY.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. [APPLAUSE] JENNIFER HAS SOME FAMILY MEMBERS HERE.
BOARD, I THINK THAT WRAPS UP THE INFORMATION ITEMS AND WE NOW GO TO DISCUSSION ITEMS. THE FIRST ITEM IS OUR TRUSTEES REPORT WHERE WE GO THROUGH EVENTS AND RECOGNITION.
[V.A. Trustees' Report]
WE'LL START ON MY RIGHT WITH MR. LARRY GLICK. THANK YOU, SIR.TODAY THIS MORNING WAS ONE OF THOSE REALLY FUN EVENTS THAT YOU GET A CHANCE TO DO ON OCCASION. SO BECAUSE 9TH, 10TH AND 11TH GRADERS ARE ALL TAKING THE PSAT TEST.
IT'S MORE OR LESS A FREE DAY FOR THE SENIORS.
AND ACTIVITIES ARE PLANNED ALL DAY LONG, AND I WAS INVITED BY ROWLETT HIGH SCHOOL TO COME ALONG WITH OTHER BUSINESSES AND TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO THE GRADUATING SENIORS.
SO MY TOPIC WAS ENTREPRENEURSHIP, HAVING STARTED, I GUESS, EIGHT DIFFERENT BUSINESSES, NATIONAL BUSINESSES AND ADVISING OTHERS.
AND IT WAS SO MUCH FUN TALKING TO THE KIDS AND SAYING, DO YOU WANT TO FULFILL THE AMERICAN DREAM, WHICH IS TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS, RUN YOUR OWN BUSINESS? AND WE HAD GREAT CONVERSATIONS.
IT LASTED ABOUT TWO AND A HALF HOURS THIS MORNING.
ALL THE SENIORS CAME THROUGH AND WHAT GREAT QUESTIONS THEY ASKED.
IT WAS REALLY FULFILLING AND TOUGH QUESTIONS ALSO.
AND I THINK WE HAVE SOME FLEDGLING ENTREPRENEURS THERE.
AND MAYBE AS I SAID TO THEM, MANY OF THE GREAT BUSINESSES WE HEAR TODAY STARTED IN SOMEBODY'S GARAGE.
AND SO YOU HAVE TO START SMALL, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO GIVE UP AN AWFUL LOT.
BUT THE FUTURE IS VERY BRIGHT.
LAST THURSDAY WAS THE CHAMBER GOLF TOURNAMENT.
I'M THE CHAIR OF THAT TOURNAMENT.
RINGO PLAYED ON A TEAM. OUR TEAM WAS MR. BEACH AND HIS SON AND MR. JOHNSON AND MYSELF.
I THINK OUT OF 20 TEAMS, WE CAME IN SECOND PLACE, WHICH IS A PRETTY GOOD SHOWING.
I THINK THE SHOT OF THE DAY FOR ME WAS MR. JOHNSON ON HOLE NUMBER 16.
VERY HARD HOLE WITH THE PIN WAY IN THE BACK AND HE PUT IT SIX FEET AWAY, AN INCREDIBLE SHOT. IT WAS A GREAT DAY AND A WONDERFUL TURNOUT.
SO THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT FOR THE CHAMBER FROM GISD.
LAST WEEK ALSO ROWLETT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF WHICH I'M A MEMBER.
WE ENTERTAINED THEM AT THE NATATORIUM.
MR. WIGGINS AND I GAVE A TOUR AND IT WAS A LOT OF FUN AND VERY ENTERTAINING.
I'M ALSO A MARCHING BAND NERD AND HAVE BEEN FOR QUITE SOME TIME.
SO THIS COMING SATURDAY, IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN MARCHING BANDS, MESQUITE MEMORIAL STADIUM, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE IT IS LBJ AND MILITARY PARKWAY IF YOU CAN'T FIND THAT, LOOK FOR THE EIFFEL TOWER, WHAT LOOKS LIKE THE EIFFEL TOWER AND YOU'LL FIND A STADIUM.
WE HAVE ALL FIVE OF OUR 6A BANDS PARTICIPATING ROWLETT'S AT 9:30 AND SACHSE IS AT 10
[01:05:03]
O'CLOCK. I'D ADVISE YOU TO GET THERE A LITTLE EARLY, AND I'D ALSO ADVISE YOU IF YOU'RE GOING TO GO TO SEE THOSE TWO SCHOOLS STAY A LITTLE LONGER.ALLEN COMES TWO BANDS ONE BAND AFTER SACHSE.
ALLEN, MOST MARCHING BANDS IN THE STATE, EVEN THE REALLY GOOD ONES MARCH SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY AND THREE HUNDRED KIDS.
ALLEN MARCHES ABOUT EIGHT HUNDRED PEOPLE.
IT'S A SPECTACLE TO SEE THEM MARCHING TO THE STADIUM.
I WAS THERE THREE YEARS AGO WHEN ALLEN MARCHED IN.
THERE WAS SOME HIGH SCHOOL KIDS FROM A 3A HIGH SCHOOL, AND THEIR REMARK WAS THEY HAVE MORE TRUMPETS IN THEIR BAND THAN WE HAVE KIDS IN OUR WHOLE BAND.
SO STAY AROUND AND WATCH ALLEN.
THEN LATER ON IN THE AFTERNOON, NORTH GARLAND'S AT TWO, GARLAND'S AT 2:45 AND LAKEVIEW'S AT THREE. IN BETWEEN THEM ARE TWO OF THE STATE FAVORITES EVERY YEAR HEBRON AND MARCUS.
STAY FOR ALL THOSE FIVE AND YOU'LL GET A REAL FLAVOR OF TEXAS IS THE MOST COMPETITIVE STATE IN THE COUNTRY FOR MARCHING BANDS.
THERE'S AN ORGANIZATION CALLED BANDS OF AMERICA.
WE SEND OUR BEST BANDS AND THEY WIN THAT CHAMPIONSHIP.
VERY POSSIBLY. THE BANDS YOU'RE GOING TO SEE FROM THIS IS CALLED REGENCY.
THE TOP FIVE FROM THIS GROUP WILL GO ON THE FOLLOWING TWO TUESDAYS LATER, AND THAT IS THE STATE MARCHING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE ALAMO DOME.
OH, I'VE BEEN THERE SO MANY TIMES.
IT'S ONE OF THE GREAT THRILLS TO BE AT THE ALAMO DOME THAT DAY, AND HOPEFULLY ONE OF OUR BANDS GETS A CHANCE TO MARCH IN THE ALAMO DOME.
SO WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT BUILDING THE NATATORIUM, WE MADE TRIPS TO TWO TRIPS TO ROCKWALL AND TWO TRIPS TO LEWISVILLE.
LEWISVILLE WAS THE STATE OF THE ART POOL AT THE TIME, AND WE WERE SHOWN SOMETHING IN THE SMALLER POOL, AS YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT THE WATER SAFETY FOR OUR KIDS.
LEWISVILLE HAD THIS REALLY COOL DEVICE THAT THEY USED, IT WAS, I CALL IT, A WAVE MAKING DEVICE. THEY WOULD PUT IT IN A POOL AND IT WOULD CREATE A LITTLE CURRENT AS THEIR SECOND GRADERS WERE LEARNING HOW TO SWIM BECAUSE MAINLY YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE IN A FLAT SURFACE WHEN YOU'RE SWIMMING. THERE MAY BE SOME CURRENT.
PAUL GONZALEZ INDICATED TO ME JUST THIS EVENING THAT AS OF LAST THURSDAY, WE NOW HAVE THAT DEVICE, SO WE ARE REALLY WHERE WE WANTED TO BE TO TEACH OUR KIDS.
THANK YOU, SIR. QUICK QUESTION.
DID YOU PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? TROMBONE. TROMBONE? GLICK LINDA GRIFFIN.
I WOULD JUST LIKE TO DRAW OUR ATTENTION TO THE BILLBOARD WE HAVE UP.
THIS IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, AND IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, THAT WALL FOR US REPRESENTS OUR SURVIVORS.
SO IF WE'RE JUST REALLY CAUTIOUS AND RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS A SERIOUS ISSUE FOR WOMEN AND NOT ONLY FOR WOMEN, BUT FOR MEN ALSO, AND IF YOU WANT TO THINK ABOUT CONTRIBUTING TO ANOTHER WORTHY CAUSE FOR RESEARCH, BREAST CANCER WOULD BE ONE OF THOSE THAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER.
I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT WE CONTINUE TO ENJOY THE PARTNERSHIP, THE FELLOWSHIP AND THE COLLABORATION WITH OUR TRI-CITIES BY ATTENDING ALL OF THEIR MONTHLY CHAMBER LUNCHEONS, AND EVERYONE IS NOW BACK IN PERSON, SO WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE AND DO THAT.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR MARCHING BANDS.
MUSIC IS A LOVE OF MINE, WHICH MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW, BUT IT TRULY IS.
AND SO I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND MY BLESSINGS TO ALL OF THE BANDS ON NEXT WEEK AT MEMORIAL. ALSO THIS YEAR IS THE 50TH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF NORTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL, AND THEY HAD A PARADE IN THEIR COMMUNITY YESTERDAY THAT WAS LED BY THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM, THEIR CHEERLEADERS, THEIR FINE ART TEAM AND OF COURSE, THE BANDS AND EVERYONE WAS THERE ALONG WITH THE CHEERLEADERS.
IT WAS EXCITING TO SEE THAT WE HAD A 1965 WHAT WAS IT DR.
[01:10:06]
LOPEZ CHEVROLET? YEAH, 1955 CHEVROLET THAT WAS LEADING THE PARADE FROM, I BELIEVE AN ALUMNI, AND IT WAS INTERESTING TO SEE THE ALUMNI ON THE STREET WITH THEIR SIGNS. I AM CLASS EIGHTY THIS AND I AM CLASS THIS.SO WHEN WE LOOK AT THE SPIRIT OR WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THE GISD EFFECT, IT DIDN'T JUST START THIS YEAR.
WE HAVE ALWAYS, AS A DISTRICT, HAD AN EFFECT AND ALUMNI'S LOVE THE SCHOOLS THAT THEY GRADUATE FROM.
AND ONCE AGAIN, I WANT TO EXTEND MY THANK YOU.
MY HEART FELT JOY FOR EVERY STAFF MEMBER IN THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, ALL SEVENTY TWO HUNDRED OR MORE FOR THE WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING ON OUR CAMPUSES AND IN OUR CLASSROOMS. WE KNOW IT'S DIFFICULT TIMES, BUT IT IS YOU ALL WHO KEEP THE DISTRICT GOING AND WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR YOU STAYING AND DOING THE TASK THAT YOU HAVE AGREED TO DO ON THE VARIOUS CAMPUSES. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
THANK YOU, MS. GRIFFIN. MR. BEACH. THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT A FEW MINUTES.
GOT TO SEE AN EVENT TAKE PLACE THAT I THOUGHT WAS JUST UNBELIEVABLY REALLY NEAT.
LAST FRIDAY, AT FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON AT MEMORIAL PATHWAY ACADEMY, THE STAFF PUT TOGETHER A HOMECOMING EVENT FOR THE NEWCOMERS INTO THE CAMPUS THAT DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HOMECOMING.
THEY DON'T HAVE A FOOTBALL TEAM.
THEY HAVE NOTHING. SO THEY PUT TOGETHER A HOMECOMING WITH DJ, BUT ORDERED IN PIZZAS AND HAD A DANCE FOR THOSE KIDS.
AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT, HAD THE BUSSES THERE WITH ARMBANDS AND TOOK THEM TO THE HOMECOMING GAME FOR THE GARLAND OWLS.
AND THE KIDS SIT IN THE STANDS AND HAD THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THEIR LIFE AND EVERYTHING WAS ORDERLY AND SO MY HAT'S OFF TO JOSH TOVAR, THE STAFF AT MEMORIAL PATHWAY AN THE EVENT THAT THEY PUT ON FOR THOSE KIDS, BECAUSE THAT'S SOMETHING THEY WON'T FORGET.
AND SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR DOING THAT, BECAUSE THAT'S THE GISD EFFECT THAT WE HAVE THAT WE GET OUT AND HELP THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING THAT WE DO ON ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES. ALSO, TEACHERS, I CAN'T WAIT.
THIS IS THE BIG MONTH YOU GET THAT FIRST RETENTION CHECK.
IT'S GOING TO BE THERE ON YOUR PAYCHECK FOR WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR SO LONG AND IT'S FINALLY COMING.
YOU DESERVE EVERY PENNY OF IT.
YOU HAVE WORKED YOUR TAIL OFF.
THANK YOU, TEACHERS FOR ALL THE EFFORT EVERYBODY.
EVERYBODY IS PUTTING FORTH THE EFFORT THAT'S GETTING THAT FUND.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT FIRST.
THAT'S FINALLY COMING HERE IN OCTOBER.
AND THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, OF COURSE, SUNDAY IS HALLOWEEN.
SO PLEASE, STUDENTS, PARENTS, EVERYBODY BE SAFE OUT THERE.
WATCH THE KIDS IN THE STREET AND JUST BE CAREFUL AND BE SAFE AND MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE CANDY AND EVERYTHING ELSE.
I HATE TO SAY THAT I KNOW WHEN I WAS A KID, I DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT, BUT YOU KNOW, THAT WAS A LONG, LONG TIME AGO.
BUT BE SAFE OUT THERE BECAUSE IT IS HALLOWEEN.
MR. BEACH. LET'S MOVE TO WES JOHNSON.
THANKS. OBVIOUSLY, LARRY ALREADY INTRODUCED THE ROWLETT CHAMBER GOLF TOURNAMENT.
WE HAD A GOOD DAY. I THOUGHT THAT WAS FUN.
WE WERE ABLE TO KIND OF PREACH ABOUT THE GISD EFFECT A LITTLE BIT AND TO A BIGGER AUDIENCE. AND SO THAT WAS GOOD.
I'VE ALSO HAD THE PLEASURE OF IN ADDITION TO GOING TO THE TYPICAL FOOTBALL GAME THAT WE THAT MOST OF US GO TO ON THURSDAYS AND FRIDAY NIGHTS, I'VE HAD AN OCCASION TO GO TO SOME OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES OF LATE.
IN FACT, I JUST SAW LAST WEEK A SELLERS VERSUS HUDSON FOOTBALL GAME, AND THE BIG THING THAT STUCK OUT TO ME IS THE ATTENDANCE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES IS REALLY INCREDIBLE. YOU LOOK UP AND DOWN AND THE SACHSE HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM THAT'S ON CAMPUS PROBABLY HOLDS, I WOULD GUESS, ABOUT FIFTEEN HUNDRED TWO THOUSAND.
AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S, WELL, MORE THAN THREE QUARTERS FULL, SO IT'S BEEN VERY IMPRESSIVE THAT LEVEL OF ATTENDANCE.
IN ADDITION, ON THE THEME OF THE BANDS, AS A PARENT OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS IN BAND, I'VE BEEN GOING TO A LOT OF MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND CONCERTS.
IN FACT I'VE GOT ONE TOMORROW NIGHT, THEN I NEED TO ATTEND AND I WENT TO TWO LAST WEEK, SO THAT'S BEEN GOOD.
[01:15:01]
AND ALSO, I WAS OBVIOUSLY PRESENT AT THE OPENING OF THE NATATORIUM A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.THAT WAS, I FEEL LIKE AT SOME POINT I'VE SEEN SO MANY TOURS OF THE NATATORIUM.
I THINK I'VE GOT IT NOW, BUT IT WAS A GOOD EVENT.
IT WAS GOOD TO GET THE COMMUNITY OUT THERE AND BEHIND WHAT WE'RE DOING AT THE NATATORIUM.
YOU'VE ALREADY PROBABLY HEARD A LITTLE BIT ABOUT A PHOTO THAT WAS TAKEN AT THE NATATORIUM TONIGHT, SO WE'LL LEAVE IT AT THAT.
I THINK THAT'S THE END OF MY REPORT.
MR. MILLER. [LAUGHTER] THANK YOU, MR. JOHNSON. MS. STANLEY. THANK YOU.
MR. MILLER, I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO START AFTER THAT, WES.
[LAUGHTER] OK, SO I GOT TO ATTEND THE RIBBON CUTTING OF THE AUDUBON REC CENTER, THE NEW AND IMPROVED AUDUBON REC CENTER.
I WAS ON THE PARKS BOARD DURING THE BOND FOR THE CITY OF GARLAND, SO I GOT TO SEE SOME OF THE FRUITS OF OUR BOARD'S LABOR.
WITH THAT AND I WAS QUITE IMPRESSED.
IF YOU GUYS HAVE NOT BEEN OVER THERE, THE VIDEO GAMES AND I'M NOT A VIDEO GAME PLAYER, BUT YOU'VE GOT TO GO CHECK IT OUT.
SO THAT WAS PRETTY COOL AND IT WAS GREAT SEEING ALL THE PEOPLE THERE.
I GOT TO I ACTUALLY WENT TO A NOON EXCHANGE LUNCHEON AND I GOT TO LISTEN TO TWO OF OUR SOUTH GARLAND STUDENTS WHO HAVE APPLIED FOR A FINAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION THAT THE [INAUDIBLE] EXCHANGE CLUB DOES AND THEY DID READ THEIR ESSAYS ON COVID AND THE CONSEQUENCES AND THE RAMIFICATIONS OF COVID IN THE LAST YEAR.
I MEAN, THOSE WERE IT WAS IT WAS.
WOW. AND THEN I WENT TO THE CRIME STOPPERS AND GOT TO SEE SOME PEOPLE GET THROWN IN A JAIL THAT I'M SURE WE COULD ALL LIVE WITH WITH THE $10 GETTING OUT AND LOTS OF FOOD FROM THE TASTE OF GARLAND.
AND THEN I ATTENDED THE TOWN HALL FOR COMMISSIONER THERESA DANIELS AND HAD NO IDEA THAT THEY HAVE THAT MASTER GARDEN IN THE BACK.
AND THEY'RE NOW AWARD WINNING TEXAS FAIR JAM WINNERS THIS YEAR.
THEY ACTUALLY WON SOME COMPETITIONS AT THE FAIR.
I HAD NO IDEA THAT THEY HAD THAT BACK THERE, AND I'VE BEEN GOING TO THAT FACILITY FOR YEARS, SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS PRETTY INTERESTING.
AND THEN I TOOK A NAP, AND THAT WAS IT.
THANK YOU, MR. SELDERS. THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. I WANTED TO ECHO SOME OF THE STATEMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE IN TERMS OF EXPRESSING GRATITUDE TO OUR STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION AND STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WITHIN GARLAND ISD FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY'RE ENDURING AND JUST CONTINUING TO PRESS ON, DESPITE ALL THE CRAZINESS OF THIS TIME.
SO JUST REALLY WANT TO LET YOU GUYS KNOW HOW MUCH WE APPRECIATE YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO MAKE SURE AND HELP OUR KIDS BE SUCCESSFUL.
LIKE MR. GLICK, I ATTENDED THE SENIOR DAY AT ROWLETT HIGH SCHOOL.
I CAUGHT THE TAIL END OF IT, BUT I WASN'T THERE FOR THE EXCITING PART WHEN HE WAS TALKING WITH SOME OF THE OTHER ENTREPRENEURS AND BUSINESS OWNERS, I HAD A CHANCE TO JUST TALK TO THEM, THOSE THAT WERE STILL IN THE AUDITORIUM AT THE END OF THE DAY AND JUST KIND OF SHARE A FEW THOUGHTS WITH THEM. AND THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING EXPERIENCE FOR ME.
ALSO, ONE OF THE TEACHERS OR COACHES TOOK ME TO THE GYM WHERE THEY WERE ACTUALLY HAVING A PROGRAM OVERVIEW OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT WERE AVAILABLE FOR UNDERCLASSMEN.
SO 9TH, 10TH AND 11TH GRADERS THAT WOULD EXPOSE THEM TO ALL OF THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT ROWLETT HIGH SCHOOL HAD TO OFFER.
AND IT WAS PRETTY AMAZING TO SEE THE BUZZ AND THE EXCITEMENT OF A LOT OF THOSE STUDENTS FINDING OUT SOME OF THE PROGRAMS THAT THEY COULD BECOME INVOLVED WITH, THAT THEY HAD NO IDEA THAT EXISTED.
THIS PAST WEEKEND, I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND AS A FELLOW POLICY BOOT CAMP THAT WAS HELD BY LEADERSHIP ISD, AND THE FOCUS WAS REALLY SORT OF REVOLVING AROUND POLICY MAKING DECISIONS THAT ARE BUILT AND CENTERED UPON STUDENT OUTCOMES.
SO IF WAS REALLY INTERESTING CONVERSATIONS TO HAVE WITH TRUSTEES FROM ACROSS THE STATE AS WELL AS OUT OF THE STATE TO GET PERSPECTIVE AND TO KIND OF SEE WHAT OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE DOING AND WHAT CONVERSATIONS THEY'RE HAVING AROUND POLICIES THAT INVOLVE
[01:20:03]
STUDENT OUTCOMES. AND LASTLY, I JUST WANTED TO SHARE HOW EXCITED AND PROUD I AM FOR THE GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL LADY OWL VOLLEYBALL TEAM.THEY HAVE MADE THE PLAYOFFS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS.
THEY PLAYED ROCKWALL HEATH ON MONDAY, SO IF YOU GUYS ARE OUT THERE AND HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THAT GAME.
I'M SURE THAT THEY WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE THAT.
AND CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR DAUGHTER ON BEING PART OF THAT TEAM.
WAY TO GO. YEAH, JUST QUICKLY.
THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT I WAS ABLE TO DO THIS PAST MONTH.
IT'S BEEN A BUSY MONTH WITHIN THE DISTRICT.
THE GRAND OPENING, OBVIOUSLY WAS THE HIGHLIGHT THE GRAND OPENING OF THE NATATORIUM.
I HOPE EVERYBODY CAN GET A CHANCE TO GO.
I ACTUALLY TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO THE SWIM MEET LAST WEDNESDAY AND IT'S JUST PHENOMENAL. THERE WERE FOUR TEAMS THERE, THREE FROM THE GISD IN RICHARDSON, AND THEY WERE SWIMMING IN TWO DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE POOL.
I DID. I WAS ABLE TO TALK TO SOME OF THE KIDS AND THE FEEDBACK WE'RE GETTING ON THIS NATATORIUM IS AS GOOD AS IT COULD BE.
JUST EVERYBODY IS THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GARLAND NATATORIUM THE GISD NATATORIUM. SO FOR ALL OF OUR COMMUNITIES ROWLETT, SACHSE AND GARLAND, THIS IS SOMETHING WE CAN BE REALLY PROUD OF, AND I HOPE EVERYBODY GETS A CHANCE TO RUN BY AND WATCH AN EVENT IN IT. YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE THINGS I DO WHENEVER I'M FEELING LOW ON ENERGY, I JUST GO STAND AROUND SOME KIDS.
THAT SAME DAY THAT I WENT TO THE SWIM MEET I STARTED OFF JUST LOW ON ENERGY, WENT TO THE SWIM MEET AND THEN I WENT TO THE GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI PEP RALLY.
YOU CAN'T GO TO ONE OF THOSE AND LEAVE THERE NOT FEELING A LITTLE BIT OF ENERGY.
THAT WAS A GREAT EVENT AND IT WAS EXTREMELY WELL ATTENDED.
AS THE NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT, I WENT TO THE GARLAND OWL HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME AND AT ONE POINT THEY HAD TO STOP ALLOWING ADMISSIONS BECAUSE THE GRANDSTANDS ON THAT SIDE WERE COMPLETELY FULL.
SO JUST A GREAT OUTPUT OR A GREAT SHOWING FOR GARLAND OWLS, AND WE WISH THEM WELL FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON AS WE DO THE REST OF OUR TEAMS. I CAN TELL YOU THIS.
NOT ALL OF OUR TEAMS ARE GETTING THAT KIND OF SUCCESS, BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT THEY DON'T WORK ANY LESS HARD AND THEY DESERVE TO BE SUPPORTED.
AND I WOULD JUST LOVE TO SEE SOME OF OUR OTHER TEAMS GET THAT KIND OF FAN SUPPORT FOR THE EFFORT THAT THESE KIDS ARE PUTTING IN.
AND THEN FINALLY, ONE OF THE THINGS I DO ROUTINELY IS I LOVE TO SHOW OFF OUR GOOD STUFF IN THE DISTRICT. I WAS ABLE TO I'VE DONE THIS PROBABLY 10 OR 12, 15 TIMES VARIOUS BUSINESS PEOPLE THAT I HAVE THROUGH MY MAKING CONNECTIONS, CUSTOMERS OF MINE AND PEOPLE I MEET, WHO I THINK IT WOULD BE VERY IMPACTFUL FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO GO TOUR OUR GILBREATH-REED CAREER TECHNOLOGY CENTER.
I CALL IT, I CALL IT THE GREATEST BUILDING IN AMERICA.
AND I REALLY FEEL THAT BECAUSE WHEN YOU GO THERE AND YOU SEE THE WAY THE KIDS ARE ENGAGED, IT IS JUST AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE EDUCATION WORK AT ITS OPTIMUM.
WE WERE ACTUALLY THERE DURING THE BREAK AND WE HAD ABOUT IT'S JUST AMAZING.
ALMOST EVERY CLASS HAD THREE OR FOUR KIDS IN IT, 30 MINUTES EARLY, 40 MINUTES EARLY, DIDN'T SAY A WORD, JUST WENT RIGHT IN AND STARTED WORKING ON THEIR PROJECTS.
I THINK DR. LOPEZ REPORTED THAT OUR KIDS WHO ATTEND THE GRCTC, WE HAD ABOUT A 99 PERCENT GRADUATION RATE, AND THAT'S UNHEARD OF.
SO I CAN'T DO I CAN'T BRAG ENOUGH ABOUT THE IMPACT THAT THIS THING IS HAVING ON KIDS.
BUT I DO SHOW IT OFF, AND I WAS ABLE TO TAKE A COUPLE OF DENTAL SURGEONS, ORAL SURGEONS BY AND THEN A COUPLE OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THE EDUCATION PROCESS AND RAISING SCHOLARSHIP MONEY, AND ALL PARTIES WERE EXTREMELY IMPACTED BY THAT.
I WILL REMIND THE BOARD THAT WE HAVE A BUSY WEEK TOMORROW.
THERE WILL BE A GOAL SETTING MEETING.
WILL BE RIGHT HERE. STARTS AT FOUR O'CLOCK.
WE'LL BE ENERGIZED BY TOMORROW.
BE ABLE TO COME BACK AND SPEND APPROPRIATE TIME AND FOCUS ON THE GOAL SETTING PROCESS.
[01:25:04]
AND WITH THAT, I TURN IT OVER TO OUR SUPERINTENDENT.[V.B. Superintendent's Report]
ALL RIGHT. WELL, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF GREAT THINGS GOING IN GARLAND.THAT BREAK CAME AT THE RIGHT TIME.
YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE LEFT LIKE, OH MY GOODNESS.
IT WAS AT THE RIGHT TIME, WAS IT BECAUSE WE STARTED EARLY? WHAT WAS IT? WELL, ANY TIME YOU'RE NINE WEEKS, EIGHT WEEKS INTO A SCHOOL SYSTEM, THAT'S WHEN KIDS START GETTING A LITTLE TOO COMFORTABLE.
THAT'S WHENEVER A LOT OF OUR PERSONAL EXPECTATIONS AREN'T BEING MET.
WE HAVE HIGH LEVEL FRUSTRATION.
AND YOU KNOW, JUST HAVING THAT FALL BREAK JUST GAVE EVERYBODY THAT BREATHER AND COMING BACK AND RE-ENERGIZED, REFOCUSED, AND IT'S REALLY A SIX WEEK STRETCH BETWEEN THAT AND THEN OUR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.
SO, YOU KNOW, I WANT TO THANK ALL THE TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY'RE DOING. THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN THIS BUSINESS IS EVERYONE, OF COURSE, BUT THE ONES THAT ARE DIRECTLY IMPACTING FUTURES ARE OUR TEACHERS, AND WHO'S LEADING THEM IS OUR PRINCIPALS. WHO'S FEEDING THEM IS OUR SNS STAFF AND WHO'S GETTING THEM THERE IS OUR TRANSPORTATION, THE BOOTS ON THE GROUND PEOPLE ARE ESSENTIAL, THE MAINTENANCE PEOPLE ARE KEEPING OUR AGING SCHOOLS RUNNING.
WE'VE GOT AN INCREDIBLE TEAM ON A SHORTAGE AND SO I WILL ABSOLUTELY AGREE THAT THE GISD EFFECT HAS ALWAYS BEEN HERE.
AND THE REASON WHY WE USE IT IS AS A REMINDER, IT'S A REMINDER OF THAT'S WHO WE ARE.
IT'S A REMINDER SOMETIMES WE LOSE OURSELVES IN THESE THINGS, LIKE THE COVID CLOUD THAT WE'RE UNDER. WE LOSE REALLY THE SENSE OF WHAT CENTERS US AND MADE US DIFFERENT THAN EVERY OTHER COMMUNITY.
AND SOMETIMES WE NEED REMINDING.
AND SO WHEN PEOPLE ARE HAVING A BAD DAY, PROCEED WITH LOVE COMPLIMENTS, LET THEM SEE THE HOPE AND THE GOODNESS THAT'S HAPPENING.
GET THAT COVID CLOUD AWAY FROM US IN OTHER PLACES.
PUT IT WHERE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU'RE REALLY THERE FOR THEM.
AND SO WHEN SOMEBODY SAYS SOMETHING, WHETHER IT'S DIRECTLY AT THEM OR INDIRECTLY, THAT WAKE HITS THEM. AND SO WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS ENSURE THAT GISD EFFECT IS REEMERGED.
IT'S WHO WE ARE. IT'S WHAT SEPARATES US AS A DISTRICT.
AND SO LET'S END STRONG LET'S SPREAD THE LOVE AND LET'S CONTINUE TO LOCK ARMS AND UNITY.
WITH THAT TODAY, YOU HEARD A NUMBER OF PEOPLE FOR AND AGAINST OUR MASK REQUIREMENT THAT IS EXPIRING TODAY AND A NOTIFICATION IS GOING TO BE SENT.
SO THIS NOTIFICATION IS JUST GOING TO BE HIGHLIGHTING THAT WHILE THIS MASK REQUIREMENT IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT, IT IS.
THERE WERE SO MANY PROCEDURES THAT GO INTO ENSURING THAT OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY IS A PRIORITY, THAT THIS IS JUST ONE PIECE.
AND TODAY DATA WAS SHARED WITH ME THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT ARE MASKING VERSUS UNMASKING THERE REALLY ISN'T A STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE ON THE DOWNWARD TREND THAT EVERYONE IS EXPERIENCING. SO WE ARE TRUSTING THAT THE REMAINING WEEKS ARE GOING TO BE POSITIVE.
WE ALWAYS WANT EVERYBODY TO BE SAFE AND PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE PUT THAT GISD IN EFFECT, ALWAYS PUT THAT BACK IN THE FOREFRONT.
IT WAS HERE FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO LOSE IT.
WE LOVE YOU ALL, AND LET'S CHARGE ON.
