OK. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WELCOME TO THE GARLAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF

[I. Call to Order and Determination of Quorum]

TRUSTEES. SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE MEETING.

THIS IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27TH, 2021.

WE DO HAVE A QUORUM.

I'M GOING TO CALL THE MEETING TO ORDER.

SECOND ITEM IS PUBLIC FORUM MECHELLE, DO WE HAVE ANY CARDS WISHING TO SPEAK TODAY? NO, SIR. OK, WE HAVE NO PUBLIC COMMENT TODAY, SO WE WILL GO RIGHT TO ITEM NUMBER THREE

[III. Welcome and Introductions]

AND I'M GOING TO TURN THE PODIUM OVER TO DR.

SHELLEY GARRETT. THANK YOU, MR. MILLER. MY NAME IS SHELLY GARRETT.

I'M THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SAFETY AND OPERATIONS IN THE GLORIOUS GISD.

WELCOME, I'M GLAD YOU ALL ARE HERE, AND I'M GLAD TO GET TO SEE HUMANS FACE TO FACE.

WELCOME AND HELLO TO DR.

LOPEZ, MEMBERS OF THE SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE.

IT IS GOOD TO SEE YOU ALL.

THIS SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE MEETING IS REQUIRED BY THE TEXAS EDUCATION CODE CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN.

IT'S REQUIRED THREE TIMES A YEAR FOR THOSE DISTRICTS THAT HAVE YEAR ROUND SCHOOL, WHICH INCLUDES US. TODAY'S FOCUS--THANK YOU, LISA OLSON--IS PROVIDING TRAUMA INFORMED CARE TRAINING TO THIS COMMITTEE, WHICH IS A NEW REQUIREMENT OF EDUCATION CODE.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A SPECIAL WELCOME BEFORE WE GET STARTED, AND I'LL TELL YOU THIS THAT WE ARE IN THE COMING WEEKS.

WE WILL BE INTERVIEWING FOR OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF SECURITY, SO I HAVE BEEN ROCKING ALONG.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO MICHAEL, MARK AND MO.

THE PEP BOYS [CHUCKLING], THEY HAVE BEEN KEEPING US AFLOAT AND I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOU GUYS VERY MUCH.

IT'S BEEN WONDERFUL, BUT MY SPECIAL INTRODUCTION IS FOR OUR NEW SECURITY COORDINATOR.

HIS NAME IS MICHAEL PIERCE.

MICHAEL, WOULD YOU PLEASE STAND? [APPLAUSE] HE'S NOT BRAND SPANKING NEW, BUT HE'S FAIRLY NEW, HE'S THE SECURITY SYSTEMS COORDINATOR. MR. PIERCE IS THE PROUD SON OF WESLEY AND ANNETTE PIERCE.

HE HAS BEEN IN THE FIRE PROTECTION INDUSTRY FOR TWENTY ONE YEARS AND EMPLOYED BY GSD FOR THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.

HE STRIVES TO MAKE EACH DAY A SAFE ONE FOR ALL WHO INHABIT OUR FACILITIES.

HE IS A BROTHER, HUSBAND, FATHER AND A BIG FAN OF AN NFL TEAM OTHER THAN THE DALLAS COWBOYS THAT I REFUSE TO MENTION [CHUCKLING], BUT I LOVE YOU ANYWAY.

THANKS FOR BEING HERE, AND THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU'VE BEEN DOING THESE PAST FEW WEEKS TO TO HELP ME OUT.

I WANT TO GIVE EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM A BRIEF UPDATE ON SOME PROJECTS.

ALL THE CAMPUSES HAVE BEEN STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOL TRAINED.

WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF CONDUCTING THE SRP TABLETOP EXERCISES AND THANK YOU, MR. QUINN, FOR GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THE FIRE CAPTAIN.

HE WAS VERY INTERESTED.

PEOPLE COME TO US AS MUCH AS WE REACH OUT TO ALL THE DIFFERENT JURISDICTIONS.

PDS, FDS, EMERGENCY OPERATIONS.

THANK YOU, MISTY. I HAD ONE REACH OUT TO ME AND SAY, HEY, WE WANT TO BE A PART OF THE TABLETOP EXERCISES.

THE ADDITIONAL SECURITY CAMERAS AND SPED CLASSROOMS WILL HAVE THE WIRING INSTALLED.

I THINK BY THE END OF DAY TO DAY, THEN WE'RE ONLY WAITING FOR THE VENDOR TO DELIVER THE CAMERAS BY DECEMBER 8TH.

SECURITY PERSONNEL TRAINED ALL BUS DRIVERS ON STOP THE BLEED AND WE WERE ABLE TO SUPPLY STOP THE BLEED KITS IN EVERY BUS.

WE HAVE BEGUN A MAJOR UPDATE TO THE DISPATCH CENTER WITH INCREASED TECHNOLOGY CAPABILITIES, WHICH IS GOING TO HELP US SO MUCH WITH THE 3800 TO 4200 CALLS WE GET EACH MONTH. ALSO, PLEASE NOTICE THE CHALLENGE COIN THAT I GAVE YOU, AND IF I DIDN'T GIVE YOU ONE, GRAB ME AND I'LL GIVE YOU ONE.

MR. QUINN AND THE SECURITY OFFICERS DESIGNED THAT BEAUTIFUL HONOR COIN AND I LOVE IT.

THANK YOU. THAT'S VERY MEANINGFUL.

NOW I'M GOING TO TURN THIS OVER TO MARK QUINN, AND HE IS GOING TO GIVE US A DRILL'S

[IV. Emergency Management Drills & Exercises: Update ]

UPDATE. WELL, GOOD MORNING, AS YOU ARE AWARE, WE KEEP A VERY STRINGENT DRILL POLICY AND DRILL SCHEDULE HERE AT GARLAND ISD AND I JUST VERY BRIEFLY WANTED JUST TO UPDATE YOU ON THE PROGRESS.

ALL CAMPUSES HAVE COMPLETED ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF THEIR DRILLS SO FAR.

WE'RE 100 PERCENT COMPLIANCE.

WE HAVE ALL TABLETOP EXERCISES.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE COMPLETE BY NOVEMBER 5TH.

DR. GARRETT JUST MENTIONED THAT THE TABLETOP EXERCISES ARE A CRITICAL PART OF WHERE WE GET DOWN AND ACTUALLY DISCUSS SCENARIOS WITH THE SAFETY AND SECURITY TEAM OF EACH CAMPUS, AND THE AUXILIARY BUILDINGS WILL BE COMPLETE ON ALL THEIR DRILLS BY THIS COMING FRIDAY.

WE HAVE THE NATATORIUM HAVING THEIR DRILLS AT ONE O'CLOCK TODAY, AND THEN WE RESCHEDULED THE STUDENT SERVICES FOR TOMORROW AND AFTER THAT WE WILL BE COMPLIANT 100 PERCENT AND THAT IS MY DRILL UPDATE.

ANY QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT.

THANK YOU. DR.

[V. Trauma Informed Care Training ]

OLSON.

HELLO, MR. MILLER, BOARD OF TRUSTEES, DR.

[00:05:01]

LOPEZ, ALL THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS.

THANK YOU ALL FOR HAVING US HERE TODAY.

WE'RE SO HAPPY TO GET TO BE HERE.

I'M HERE WITH A COUPLE OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS FOR THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES TEAM AND MY DIRECTOR'S OVER THERE, TIFFANY GILMORE.

SO WE'RE ALL GLAD TO BE HERE TO SUPPORT THE WHOLE DISTRICT IN THE EFFORT OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND TRAUMA INFORMED CARE.

SO I'M LISA OLSON.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO I AM, I'M THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES ADMINISTRATOR AND MY BACKGROUND, I DID GROW UP IN GARLAND ISD, SO I'M HAPPY TO FEEL LIKE THIS IS MY HOME.

IT HAS BEEN FOR A LONG TIME AND I STARTED MY CAREER AT NORTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL, STARTED THE AVID PROGRAM THERE AND WAS DELIGHTED TO GET TO JUST MAKE AN IMPACT ON KIDS WHO ARE SOMETIMES UNDERSERVED AND WE MADE QUITE AN IMPACT THERE.

SO I'M HAPPY NOW TO GET TO BE A PART OF THE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING TEAM AND MY BACKGROUND IS IN SOCIAL WORK, SO I'M A LICENSED MASTER SOCIAL WORKER AND I'VE BEEN ABLE TO KIND OF BLEND MY EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND WITH MY SOCIAL WORK BACKGROUND, WHICH HAS BEEN JUST A BEAUTIFUL THING. AND I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE MY TEAM MEMBERS NOW.

SORRY. GOOD MORNING, MY NAME IS CAMILLE LUCAS.

I ALSO LIKE DR.

OLSON AND AM A VERY PROUD PRODUCT OF GARLAND ISD AND SO LIFE IS A NICE CIRCLE OF TAKING ME BACK HERE TO WORK AND SERVING THE SAME DISTRICT THAT HELPED RAISE ME AND SO IN BETWEEN A LOT OF THAT TIME, FROM GROWING UP IN GARLAND, I WENT OUT TO TARRANT COUNTY.

I WORKED OUT IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM OUT THERE WITH THOSE YOUTH AND THEN I ALSO ACTUALLY WORKED IN HIGHER ED AS WELL AND SO BLENDING MY BACKGROUND IN SOCIAL WORK AND ALL THESE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES IN EDUCATION, I'M GLAD TO BE HERE TO SHARE INFORMATION WITH YOU TODAY.

HELLO, MY NAME'S LARRY MCINTYRE.

I'M A LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR.

BEFORE I CAME TO GARLAND, I WORKED OUT IN IRVING ISD.

I WAS A CAREER IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION TEACHER FOR 10 YEARS.

BEFORE THAT, I ACTUALLY WORKED FOR MHMR OF TARRANT COUNTY, WHERE I WORKED WITH INDIVIDUALS THAT WERE COMING OUT OF THE STATE HOSPITALS, TRANSITIONING BACK TO LIFE, WHETHER IT BE IT WITH THEIR FAMILIES OR BACK IN OTHER TYPES OF SETTINGS AND SO I'VE HAD THE GREAT FORTUNE, REALLY EVERY TIME IT COMES UP, I REALLY DO TELL PEOPLE THIS.

I REALLY MEAN IT. THIS IS THE BEST JOB I'VE EVER HAD BECAUSE I GET TO HELP KIDS EVERY DAY AND I GET TO TAKE MY TWO PASSIONS, WHICH ARE MENTAL HEALTH AND OUR KIDS AND I GET TO POUR MY LIFE INTO THEM.

AND SO IT'S A GREAT HONOR TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK BEFORE YOU TODAY.

TRYING TO GET THE SLIDE PRESENTATION PUT UP HERE, IF I CAN.

OK, SO LIKE ANY GOOD TRAINING, WE DO HAVE OBJECTIVES.

WE LEARNED THAT FROM OUR TEACHERS.

WE'RE GOING TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS AND GARLAND ISD WHAT WE'VE DONE THUS FAR, WHERE WE STARTED AND WHERE WE'VE COME, WE'RE GOING TO EDUCATE ON MENTAL HEALTH SIGNS, SYMPTOMS, RISK FACTORS, PROTECTIVE FACTORS AND ACTION STEPS ALSO SHOW THE IMPACT OF MENTAL HEALTH WITHIN THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM AND FINALLY EQUIP PARTICIPANTS WITH RESOURCES. YOU WILL BE WALKING AWAY WITH SOME RESOURCES WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE, AND WE'RE GOING TO START WITH A BRIEF VIDEO.

I HAVE MY UPS AND DOWNS JUST LIKE ANYBODY ELSE, MAYBE MORE THAN ANYBODY ELSE.

I CAN BE HARD TO FIGURE OUT AND I LIKE MY PRIVACY.

I DON'T WANT YOU LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER ALL THE TIME, BUT YOU KNOW YOUR KID BETTER THAN ANYBODY ELSE AND IF YOU THINK HE'S ACTING DIFFERENT THAN USUAL, ACTING REALLY DOWN, CRYING ALL THE TIME FOR NO GOOD REASON, OR GETTING REALLY MAD, NOT ABLE TO SLEEP OR SLEEPING TOO MUCH, SHUTTING HER FRIENDS OUT OR GIVING HER STUFF AWAY.

ACTING RECKLESS, DRINKING, USING DRUGS, STAYING OUT LATE, SUDDENLY NOT DOING STUFF HE USED TO LOVE OR DOING STUFF THAT'S JUST NOT LIKE HIM.

IT MIGHT BE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

IT MIGHT JUST AND WE CUT IT OFF THERE INTENTIONALLY.

TALKING ABOUT WHAT IT MIGHT BE.

WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.

IT MIGHT BE MENTAL HEALTH AND WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH? AND SO WE WANT TO SEE WHAT YOU KNOW.

SO IF YOU HAVE A SMARTPHONE, WE'RE GOING TO PLAY KAHOOT.

SO IF YOU WOULD GO AHEAD AND PULL THAT OUT, JUST A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.

WE'RE NOT GRADING YOU ON IT.

SO NO WORRIES ABOUT THAT.

[00:10:01]

[INAUDIBLE] THE INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE TO GO TO THE WEBSITE WWW.KAHOOT.IT AND THEN WHEN PROMPTED, YOU'LL ENTER THE GAME PIN AND FEEL FREE TO USE WHICHEVER NAME YOU WOULD LIKE.

ALL RIGHT, WE'LL START WITH [INAUDIBLE] AND COME JOIN US.

THIRTY MORE SECONDS, SO GO AHEAD AND THINK OF YOUR NAME AND WE'LL GET STARTED SHORTLY.

LET'S GET STARTED.

ALL RIGHT. MOOD METER, WE WANT TO KNOW WHICH EMOJI REPRESENTS YOUR MOOD RIGHT NOW, TODAY, SOME PEOPLE ARE EXCITED.

A FEW ARE JUST WONDERING, PONDERING.

IT COULD BE A LOT OF OTHER THINGS ON YOUR MIND AS WELL AND THEN ALSO WE SEE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAPPY, BUT WE'RE HAPPY TO SEE NO ONE IS NECESSARILY IN A, YOU KNOW, A SAD MOOD.

ALL RIGHT. SO THAT IS IN LINE WITH OUR SEL.

WE'D LIKE TO DEFINITELY CHECK SEE HOW PEOPLE ARE DOING TODAY, KNOW WHAT OUR AUDIENCE IS HAVING ON THEIR MIND.

ALL RIGHT. NO WINNERS, BUT WE SEE WHO ALL ANSWERED VERY FAST.

ALL RIGHT, SECOND QUESTION.

HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU IN YOUR ABILITY TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS DURING THE WORKDAY? RIGHT, WE SEE A GOOD MORE THAN HALF OF YOU HAVE THE EXPERIENCE IN THE AREA AND THERE'S SOME I CAN NOTICE IT.

NOT SURE WHAT TO DO AND THEN SOME I'VE READ HEARD ABOUT THIS AND GREAT.

WE ALL UNDERSTAND IT AS PART OF OUR ROLE.

NOW WHAT WE DO WITH THAT INTERVENTION IS ANOTHER CONVERSATION AND SO WE SEE OUR PODIUM.

CONGRATS TO YOU WHOEVER JAMIE IS.

ALL RIGHT, WHO HAD THE QUICKEST FINGER? ALL RIGHT, IF YOU WANT TO WAVE YOUR HAND, YOU CAN.

ALL RIGHT.

WE DO HAVE CANDY FOR EVERYBODY AT THE END, SO EVERYONE'S A WINNER.

[CHUCKLING] YES, THANK YOU.

THANK YOU ALL FOR TAKING TIME TO DO THAT.

I DO WANT TO POINT OUT THAT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH, OF COURSE, THERE ARE SOME SUBJECTS THAT ARE NOT EASY TO HEAR AND NOT EASY TO TALK ABOUT, AND SOME PEOPLE ARE GOING THROUGH THINGS OR YOU'VE GONE THROUGH THINGS.

SO IF AT ANY MOMENT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED TO KIND OF STEP OUT FOR A MOMENT, FEEL FREE TO DO THAT. SOMETIMES CERTAIN TOPICS ARE TRIGGERING OF PEOPLE, AND I FEEL LIKE IT'S JUST WE ALL FEEL LIKE WE HAVE TO BE THERE FOR EVERYBODY ELSE.

BUT SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE THERE FOR YOURSELF, SO FEEL FREE TO STEP OUT IF THAT'S NEEDED. I WANT TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT OF A TIMELINE, AND WE START WITH SOMETHING PRETTY, A PRETTY SAD MOMENT, WHICH WAS IN FEBRUARY OF 2013.

I KNOW DR. RUSSELL CAN REMEMBER THIS TIME BECAUSE SHE AND I HAD MULTIPLE CONVERSATIONS AND UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAD FIVE DEATHS BY SUICIDE IN FIVE MONTHS AND GARLAND ISD AND IT WAS TRAGIC BECAUSE ONE IS TOO MANY, BUT FIVE WAS THOSE WERE STUDENTS WHO WERE CURRENTLY IN THE DISTRICT. WE HAD ANOTHER STUDENT WHO HAD JUST RECENTLY LEFT THE DISTRICT AS WELL.

SO WE REALIZED, OH MY GOSH, WE'VE GOT TO DO SOMETHING, YOU KNOW, AND WHAT ARE WE DOING? AND PEOPLE SAID, WELL, WE'RE DOING STUFF, YOU KNOW, WE'RE ALREADY DOING STUFF AND I SAID,

[00:15:03]

WELL, WHAT ARE WE DOING? YOU KNOW, WE, DR.

RUSSELL, ESPECIALLY SAYING, YOU KNOW, WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY DOING BECAUSE WE'RE NOT STANDARDIZED IN OUR APPROACH THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE ACTUALLY SEEING PEOPLE WHO MAY BE SUICIDAL.

SO IMMEDIATELY THERE WAS A PUSH COMMUNICATIONS AND EVERYBODY GOT TOGETHER AND WE HAD ALL THESE YOU MATTER EVENTS.

THE YOU MATTER EVENTS WERE VARIOUS TOPICS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT, INCLUDING EVERYTHING FROM TEEN DATING VIOLENCE TO SUICIDE PREVENTION, AND WE DID THOSE IN MULTIPLE LANGUAGES.

WE PUSHED OUT THIS VERY QUICKLY, BUT IN AN EFFORT TO SAY, WHAT CAN WE DO JUST RIGHT AWAY TO TRY TO HELP EDUCATE? AND THAT WAS HELPFUL TO START.

THEN IN MARCH OF '19, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PROGRAM.

THE LIGHT PROGRAM WAS THE PRIOR PROGRAM, WHICH WAS BASED UPON FUNDS THAT WERE DONATED TO OR GIVING GRANT FUNDS FOR DRUG PREVENTION.

BUT WE HAD REALIZED THAT OVER TIME, DRUG PREVENTION WAS ONLY A PIECE OF THE MANY ISSUES THAT OUR COUNSELORS WERE DEALING WITH.

SO THIS PROGRAM WAS THANKFULLY APPROVED BY OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND DR.

LOPEZ WAS ON BOARD WITH HAVING A TEAM OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND WE'RE SO GRATEFUL TO BE ABLE TO HIRE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO WERE ABLE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS THAT WENT WELL BEYOND WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY SLATED FOR JUST DRUG PREVENTION.

THEN SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE STARTED LOOKING AT THE SYSTEMS THAT WERE IN PLACE AND PEOPLE WOULD SAY, WE, YOU KNOW, IF A STUDENT IS SUICIDAL, HERE'S WHAT WE DO AND I SAID, BUT WHERE IS THE DOCUMENTATION OF ALL THAT LIKE HOW DO WE HAVE A SYSTEM THAT SHOWS US, OH, THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING, YOU'RE ACTUALLY TALKING TO A STUDENT AND YOU'RE MAKING SURE THEY GET APPROPRIATE RESOURCES AND YOU'RE REFERRING THEM ACCORDINGLY AND YOU'RE LOOKING FOR THESE SIGNS AND SO WE CREATED A STANDARDIZED PROCEDURE WHEREIN EVERY STUDENT WHO WAS RECOGNIZED AS POTENTIALLY HAVING SUICIDAL IDEATION, THEY WERE ALL DOCUMENTED IN ONE FORM SO THAT WE COULD LOOK AT IT FROM A DISTRICT PERSPECTIVE AND SEE WHERE ARE THE HOT SPOTS LIKE WHERE ARE SOME AREAS WHERE WE NEED TO GIVE MORE SUPPORT? AND ALSO, WHAT ARE WE DOING AND HOW DO WE KNOW WE CAN LOOK BACK UP NOW AND SAY THIS STUDENT WAS POTENTIALLY SUICIDAL THREE MONTHS AGO AND NOW IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN? WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT? HAVE THEY BEEN TO A HOSPITAL? SO WE DOCUMENTED ALL THAT STUFF.

AND THAT WAS VERY HELPFUL, AND I THINK THAT WE WERE REFINING THAT PROCESS.

WHEN TIFFANY CAME IN AS OUR DIRECTOR, SHE HELPED US TO REFINE THE PROCESS AND MAKING SURE THAT WE HAD EXACTLY ENOUGH TO MAKE SURE WE'RE MEETING THE NEEDS OF KIDS.

BUT WE DIDN'T HAVE SO MANY COMPLICATIONS THAT IT MADE IT BE CUMBERSOME FOR STAFF MEMBERS.

SO IT'S JUST A SWEET SPOT ON THAT.

THEN OF COURSE, COVID CAME IN MARCH, AND EVERYTHING THAT WE HAD DONE WAS ALL DIRECTED AT IN-PERSON. YOU KNOW, WE WEREN'T REALLY THINKING ABOUT PEOPLE VIRTUALLY SO MUCH.

SO THEN WE THOUGHT, WHAT ARE THE NEW THINGS WE NEED TO LOOK FOR? BECAUSE USED TO WHEN A KID WALKED IN THE DOOR AND WE SAW THEY'RE SITTING BY THEMSELVES AND THEY'RE NOT EATING WITH EVERYBODY OR WE SAW THAT THEY KIND OF WERE SLUMPED OVER, THEIR CLOTHES WERE DIRTY. THEY LOOK LIKE THEY HAD BRUISES ON THEM, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE.

WERE THEY BEING ABUSED? WERE THEY DEPRESSED? WHAT WE WERE LOOKING AT THEM AND WE COULD SEE IT IN-PERSON.

AND NOW WE WERE LIKE, WE CAN'T DO THAT ANYMORE.

SO WE WENT THROUGH AND WE SAID, WHAT ARE SOME NEW THINGS WE CAN DO? AND OUR DEPARTMENT STARTED WITH THE ABILITY FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS TO REQUEST A COUNSELOR ONLINE. SO WE PUT IT'S CURRENTLY ON OUR WEBSITE.

IT'S BEEN THERE SINCE MARCH, AND WE HAD AN ABILITY FOR STUDENTS AND EVERYONE TO REQUEST A COUNSELOR AND WE WOULD GET BACK TO THEM AND SEE WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE.

WE ALSO ADVISE TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS ON WAYS THAT THEY CAN LOOK AT A STUDENT AND SAY IF THEY'RE TURNING THEIR CAMERA OFF THE WHOLE TIME, WHAT IS THAT ABOUT? LET'S REACH OUT AND FIND MORE STUDENTS.

WE ACTUALLY WENT TO HOMES, WE DID VARIOUS THINGS, WE DID A LOT OF VIRTUAL LEARNING, WE DID WEBINARS, WE CONDUCTED A LOT OF TRAININGS ONLINE, DID VIDEOS, A LOT OF THINGS TO JUST MAKE THE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS BE AROUND AND WE ALSO TARGETED JUST THE CONCEPT OF COVID, WHERE PEOPLE WERE FEELING ISOLATED IN THEIR HOMES AND SOME THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP IN THOSE IN THOSE WAYS.

SO WE WERE VERY INTENTIONAL ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT WE MET THOSE KIDS NEEDS AND THEN FINALLY, THIS SUMMER, WE UPGRADED ALL OF OUR REQUIRED TRAININGS FOR STAFF EVERY YEAR TO INCLUDE ALL THE STATE APPROVED SUICIDE PREVENTION, YOU KNOW, AS WELL AS THINGS LIKE CHILD ABUSE REPORTING. BUT ALL THOSE TRAININGS, WE PUT THEM IN THAT SYSTEM SO THAT NOW EVERY STAFF MEMBER HAS ACCESS AND THEY'RE REQUIRED TO DO THEM EVERY YEAR.

HERE ARE A FEW OTHER MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES THAT WE'VE DONE THROUGHOUT THE TIME THAT WE'VE BEEN HERE AS RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELORS.

WE'VE IMPLEMENTED TRAUMA INFORMED CARE.

THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT WE DID.

TIFFANY WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THAT PRIOR TO IT EVEN REALLY BEING REQUIRED BY THE LAW.

[00:20:01]

SHE WAS VERY INTENTIONAL, COMING OVER WITH LAURIE, OUR COORDINATOR WAS STARTING OFF RIGHT OFF THE BAT, DOING TRAUMA AND [INAUDIBLE] CARE TRAINING BEFORE A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE DOING IT AT ALL. THIS IS THE AS-K TRAINING, WHICH IS THE GATEKEEPER TRAINING FOR THAT'S APPROVED BY THE STATE THAT ALL OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS ARE DOING MENTAL HEALTH.

FIRST AID IS SOMETHING THAT THE DISTRICT COORDINATOR FOR COUNSELING AND I ARE TRAINED IN.

A FEW YEARS AGO, RIGHT BEFORE COVID, SHE AND I WENT AND GOT TRAINED.

WE TOOK A WEEK TO GET TRAINED TO BECOME TRAINERS IN MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID, WHICH WAS RECOMMENDED BY THE GOVERNOR.

I THINK DR. LOPEZ MIGHT HAVE SAID ON THAT SUMMER WHEN THEY WERE RECOMMENDING VARIOUS THINGS FOR MENTAL HEALTH, AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THEY RECOMMENDED.

SO WE, LAURIE AND I, CONTINUE TO CONDUCT TRAININGS FOR MENTAL HEALTH, FIRST AID TRAININGS FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, FOR STAFF MEMBERS.

IN FACT, WE HAVE ONE THIS SATURDAY, BUT IT'S FULL, SO WE DON'T HAVE ANY SPACE IN THAT ONE. WE'RE GETTING READY TO TRANSITION INTO SOME MORE ONLINE TRAINING AS WELL, SOME VIRTUAL TRAINING, BUT RIGHT NOW WE'RE CONDUCTING IT IN-PERSON.

AND SO WE'LL BE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS ON SATURDAY, TRAINING ALL DAY LONG, SOME TEACHERS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY.

BUT WE WELCOME YOU TO ASK US IF YOU WANT A SPECIFIED TRAINING FOR YOUR TEAM OR IF YOU WOULD JUST LIKE TO SHOW UP AT ONE OF THE ONES THAT WE'RE CONDUCTING OTHERWISE.

IF YOU WANT IT TO BE IN-PERSON, WHATEVER, WE'RE THERE FOR YOU.

YOU MET OUR EVENTS OR OUR MONTHLY INITIATIVES THAT INCLUDE EVERYTHING FROM DRUG PREVENTION TO BULLYING AWARENESS AND ALL THOSE THINGS.

EVERY MONTH WE DO IT.

THIS IS, YOU KNOW, DRUG PREVENTION WEEK AND SOME PEOPLE ARE WEARING JERSEYS TODAY.

I HAD THIS PRESENTATION, SO I THOUGHT OF MAYBE I SHOULDN'T WEAR A JERSEY, PLUS IT MIGHT MAKE SOMEBODY MAD, YOU KNOW, THE WRONG JERSEY.

BUT ANYWAY--[CHUCKLING] YEAH, SHELLY, RIGHT? BUT ANYWAY, WE DO THAT AND WE'RE JUST INCREASING AWARENESS.

THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DOING. OUR GOAL IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS WITH IT, NOT JUST IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT AMONG THE COMMUNITY AND FINALLY, AS YOU ALL KNOW, ABOUT A MONTH OR SO AGO, WE WERE HONORED HERE FOR BECOMING A FIRST DISTRICT OF GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THAT WAS WE WERE DOING THAT PRIOR TO COVID, PRIOR TO US KNOWING ALL THE LOSSES PEOPLE WERE GOING TO EXPERIENCE.

WE ACTUALLY HAD STARTED THAT.

MARK HOWARD HAD COME TO US AND SAID, HEY, I KNOW A LOT OF STUDENTS ARE GRIEVING OVER VARIOUS THINGS, AND WE'VE SINCE LEARNED THAT, OF COURSE, THE GRIEF IS INTENSE, AND WE'VE ALSO SINCE LEARNED THAT THE TRADITIONALLY, YOU KNOW, THE STUDENTS THAT ARE TRADITIONALLY UNDERSERVED, THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE ACTUALLY MORE AFFECTED, AS WE KNOW BY LOSSES OF PRIMARY CAREGIVERS.

IT'S INCREDIBLE THE DIFFERENCE IS THIRTY FIVE PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS THAT HAVE LOST THEIR PRIMARY CAREGIVER ARE OUR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS WHO ARE IN OUR MINORITY COMMUNITIES.

SO WE CAN'T IGNORE THAT.

I MEAN, IT'S REALLY IT'S CONCERNING, BUT WE'VE GOT THE GRIEF SENSITIVE SCHOOLS, WHICH IS OFFERING HELP FOR OUR FAMILIES.

A LOT OF THINGS THAT SOME TOOLS THAT THEY'VE GIVEN AS TRAINING AS WELL AS MATERIALS.

WELL, THE PURPOSE FOR US COMING TODAY TO DO A PRESENTATION FOR YOU IS PRESENTED IN THIS HOUSE BILL NUMBER 204, AND IT STATES INCLUDES TRAINING ON INTEGRATING PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY AND SUICIDE PREVENTION STRATEGIES INTO THE DISTRICT'S PLAN, SUCH AS PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID FOR SCHOOLS, TRAINING FROM AN APPROVED LIST OF RECOMMENDED TRAINING ESTABLISHED BY THE COMMISSIONER AND TEXAS SCHOOL SAFETY CENTER AND YOU'LL NOTICE DOWN THERE BELOW IS ALL THE DIFFERENT FOLKS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE A PART OF THIS MEETING, AND WE ARE VERY GLAD THAT YOU'RE HERE TODAY TO BE PART OF THIS.

THANK YOU.

AND SO WE WANT TO HIGHLIGHT PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY.

SO JUST THINK TO YOURSELF WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN I HEAR PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY? WHAT DOES THAT REALLY MEAN? HOW DOES THAT REALLY INTERFERE OR INVOLVE WHAT I DO? AND SO WE HAVE THIS CARTOON HERE.

AND SO THERE'S THREE BOXES.

SO, WITH THE FIRST ONE, GREEN SHIRT PERSON SAYS BEFORE I GIVE MY PROJECT STATUS REPORT, HAS ANYONE BEEN FIRED RECENTLY? SECOND SQUARE PERSON IN THE ORANGE SHIRT RESPONDS, I FIRED TED LAST WEEK.

GREEN SHIRT SITS DOWN, NOW ORANGE SHIRT REPLIES, NOW TELL ME WHY YOUR PROJECT IS LATE.

GREEN SHIRT SAYS IT WAS HIS FAULT AND SO WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY, WE'RE REALLY TRYING TO CANCEL THAT TYPE OF BEHAVIOR BECAUSE WHAT REALLY PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY IS, IS THAT SHARED BELIEF HELD REALLY WITHIN THAT GROUP AND THAT TEAM THAT IT'S SAFE FOR US TO HAVE THESE INTERPERSONAL CONVERSATIONS AND SAFE FOR US TO TAKE RISK TOGETHER TO DISAGREE AND SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH, THIS IS WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE AND THAT'S WHY THE QUESTION WAS IN THE KAHOOT, YOU KNOW, DURING THE WORKDAY, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES WE WERE SO FOCUSED ON WHAT WE DO DURING THOSE EIGHT HOURS OR WHATEVER YOUR SHIFT MAY BE THAT WE DON'T THINK, OH, THAT WILL BE SOMETHING I CAN DO OUTSIDE, BUT SOMETIMES WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR IT AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE PSYCHOLOGICALLY, YOU KNOW, WE'RE MENTALLY SAFE IN

[00:25:02]

THESE ENVIRONMENTS AND SO WE WANT TO HAVE THAT RESPECT.

WE WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT WE'RE HERE WITH ALL DAY AND SO WE'LL DO--NOW THIS IS A FOOTBALL PLAYER.

WE'RE NOT HAVING ANY FAVORITISM TOWARDS ANY SPECIAL TEAMS, BUT THIS IS A QUOTE.

IT SAYS IF WE START BEING HONEST ABOUT OUR PAIN, OUR ANGER AND OUR SHORTCOMINGS INSTEAD OF PRETENDING THAT THEY DON'T EXIST, THEN MAYBE WE'LL DO THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE THAN WE FOUND IT AND SO INSTEAD OF HOLDING A LOT OF THESE THINGS IN AND NOT DEALING WITH THEM THROUGHOUT OUR WORKDAY, MAYBE WE CAN LEAVE OUR WORK ENVIRONMENTS IN A BETTER SITUATION.

SO I INVITE YOU TO KIND OF MEDITATE ON THAT AS WE CONTINUE THROUGH.

COMING OUT OF THE MENTAL HEALTH COMMUNITY WHERE I WAS AT BEFORE AND ALSO KIND OF COMING INTO THIS ENVIRONMENT WHERE WE'RE DEALING WITH KIDS AND WE'RE WORKING WITH THEM DAILY AND WE'RE FROM TIME TO TIME, WE'RE CALLED IN TO OBSERVE THEM IN THE CLASSROOM WHEN WE SEE THAT THERE ARE TROUBLING SIGNS THAT WE SEE AND SO WHAT WE'VE NOTICED AND WHAT WE CONTINUE TO NOTICE WITHIN OUR DISTRICT ARE SOME DIFFERENT TYPES OF MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSIS.

NOW SOMETIMES WHAT WE'LL FIND WITHIN THIS FIELD IS THAT IT'S VERY DIFFICULT.

THE YOUNGER A PERSON IS, THE HARDER IT IS TO ACTUALLY DIAGNOSE A PARTICULAR MENTAL DISORDER AND SO THE COLLECTING OF THE INFORMATION THAT WE COLLECT ALONG WITH WHAT'S HAPPENING AT EACH INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL BETWEEN THOSE TWO THINGS THAT BECOME SO VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE'RE COORDINATING AND WORKING TOGETHER AND SO WHEN WE LOOK AT THESE DIAGNOSES, MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER, YOU KNOW, HOW DO YOU DECIDE, YOU KNOW, WHETHER OR NOT A STUDENT REALLY IS HAS A MAJOR DEPRESSION DISORDER? OR ARE THEY JUST GOING THROUGH A TOUGH TIME? AND YOU'RE ONLY GOING TO KNOW THAT BY COLLECTING THE DATA AND ALSO BY ACTUALLY DOING THE FACE TO FACE THAT YOU HAVE TO DO, YOU CAN'T DO ANY OF THIS IN A REMOTE CONTROL TYPE OF A PROCESS. SCHIZOPHRENIA, IN FACT, THEY WON'T EVEN DIAGNOSE A STUDENT THAT'S YOUNGER THAN 18 FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA BECAUSE IT COULD BE SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS AND WE DON'T WANT TO LABEL PEOPLE ANYTHING UNTIL WE ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO.

ALSO EATING DISORDERS ARE A BIG FACTOR IN OUR COMMUNITY HERE WITHIN OUR DISTRICT.

YOUNG WOMEN, ESPECIALLY ALTHOUGH YOUNG MEN, ALSO ARE AFFECTED.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE, OF COURSE.

YOU KNOW, IN THE LIGHT COUNSELORS WERE ACTUALLY WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE, THAT WAS OUR SPECIFIC GOAL AT THE TIME.

BUT WE HAVE ENCOMPASSED ALL OF THESE OTHER TYPES OF MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS, ALONG WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND, OF COURSE, PSYCHOSIS.

WHEN YOU HAVE AND YOU HEAR ABOUT STUDENTS DOING, LET'S ADMIT IT, IT'S RATHER BIZARRE THINGS THAT WE HEAR SOMETIMES ABOUT WHAT STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED IN.

SO ALL OF THIS, WE ARE TRYING TO RESPOND TO THOSE NEEDS, OF COURSE AND OF COURSE, THERE ARE MANIFESTATIONS, SELF-HARM BEHAVIORS.

WE SEE A LOT OF STUDENTS FOR SELF-HARM BEHAVIORS AND I GUESS I'M IN A DIFFERENT GENERATION. SO I DON'T QUITE UNDERSTAND THE IDEA OF GETTING TOGETHER WITH OTHER GIRLS AND DECIDING, HEY, WE'RE GOING TO HURT OURSELVES.

BUT THAT'S HAPPENING A LOT IN OUR DISTRICT.

VIOLENCE IN DIFFERENT FORMS, OF COURSE.

YOU KNOW, IF YOU'RE SEEING IT AT HOME, YOU'RE GOING TO PERHAPS ACT OUT IN YOUR DATING TYPES OF BEHAVIORS AND, OF COURSE, DYSREGULATED MOOD.

THIS IS WHERE EVERYTHING COULD BE JUST FINE AROUND YOU AND YOU JUST HAPPEN TO JUST BE NOT IN SYNC WITH WHAT'S GOING ON.

SO WE DO BRING ALL OF OUR EXPERTISE, WE BRING ALL OF OUR BACKGROUND, WE BRING ALL OF OUR KNOWLEDGE AND THEN WE DON'T JUST WANT TO BRING THESE TYPES OF INFORMATION TO THESE KIDS.

WE WANT TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP THEM.

WE WANT TO PUT THEM ON THE PATH WHEREVER THEY HAPPEN TO BE SO THAT THEY CAN GET BETTER.

I MEAN, THAT'S REALLY WHAT WE'RE ABOUT.

SO TO BRING THAT CONVERSATION BACK TO TRAUMA INFORMED CARE, IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD THAT TRAINING OR YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT, IT REALLY IS A SHIFT.

IT'S SHIFTING THE FOCUS.

SO IT'S REALLY THE MINDSET SHIFT FROM ASKING WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? TO WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU? AND SO THE IMAGE HERE THAT WE HAVE IS A PERSON LOOKING OFF.

THIS COULD BE YOUR COWORKER, A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER THAT YOU KNOW ARE HAVING SOMETHING, BUT THEY'RE JUST NOT ENGAGED WITH WHAT'S GOING ON.

BUT WHEN WE LOOK AT IT FROM A TRAUMA INFORMED CARE, WHEN WE REALIZE MAYBE THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON AT HOME, MAYBE THERE'S A COWORKER WHO HAS A LOT OF NEGATIVE THINGS TO SAY. MAYBE THAT'S A CLASSMATE, WHATEVER THAT IS AND SO WHEN WE START LOOKING AT MENTAL HEALTH FROM THAT APPROACH OR THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON THAT WE MAY NOT REALIZE IS MORE SO MENTAL HEALTH, WE START LOOKING AT IT WITH A LITTLE BIT MORE CARE AND SO WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TRAUMA, TRAUMA CAN BE A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS, BUT HERE WE DEFINE IT AS THAT EXTREME OR CHRONIC STRESS THAT OVERWHELMS A PERSON'S ABILITY TO COPE.

A LOT OF TIMES IT LEAVES US FEELING VERY VULNERABLE, VERY HELPLESS AND, YOU KNOW, VERY

[00:30:05]

FEARFUL AND THE REALITY IS, TRAUMA CAN BE FROM ONE EVENT OR IT CAN BE A SERIES OF EVENTS AND EVEN THEN, THE EVENT THAT MAY TRAUMATIZE YOU MAY NOT HAVE EVEN DIRECTLY HAPPENED TO YOU. IT COULD BE SOMETHING YOU OBSERVED IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD, AND OUT IN THE COMMUNITY AND A LOT OF TIMES IT CAN BE VERY SUBJECTIVE AND THAT ALWAYS REMINDS ME WHEN WE'RE WORKING WITH OUR YOUTH AND WE MAY SEE SOMETHING TRAUMATIC HAPPEN TO THAT FAMILY UNIT, BUT WE SEE DIFFERENT RESPONSES.

YOU KNOW, THERE MAY BE MORE RESILIENCE ON CERTAIN STUDENTS, AND SO WE CAN'T EXPECT EVERYONE TO HAVE THE SAME RESPONSE OF SNAP OUT OF IT OR OH, WHY DON'T YOU DO THESE THINGS? MAYBE THIS PERSON IS NOT AS ENGAGED IN OTHER EXTRACURRICULARS.

MAYBE THEIR SOCIAL NETWORK IS NOT AS STRONG AND SO WE WANT TO REMIND OURSELVES THAT IF IT'S TRAUMATIC TO THE PERSON, IT'S TRAUMATIC TO THAT PERSON.

AND REALLY, IT'S ANYTHING THAT THEY CONSIDER TO BE NOT OK THAT'S HAPPENED IN THEIR LIFE AND SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT OUR YOUTH HAVING A LOT OF TRAGEDIES, EVEN ONE, ONE TOO MANY OVERALL, IT REALLY IS TOXIC TO THAT DEVELOPMENT AND SO TAKE A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE TYPES OF TRAUMA WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TRAUMA AND A LOT OF TIMES WE GO FROM LOOKING OUT THERE AND WE START LOOKING WITHIN OURSELVES.

WE MAY SEE OURSELVES ON THIS SCREEN.

WHEN WE LOOK THROUGH THESE TYPES OF TRAUMA, WE MAY SEE OUR LOVED ONES, WE MAY SEE OUR SIBLINGS, WE MAY SEE OUR CHILDREN AND SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH, WE ALWAYS WANT TO BRING THE CONVERSATION BACK TO OURSELVES SO WE CAN BRING BACK THAT EMPATHY AND SO WE REMIND OURSELVES WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AND SO AS WE GET READY, WE LOOK AT THESE TRAUMA, BUT THAT MANIFESTATION LOOKS A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS AND SO I'LL LET DR.

OLSON CONTINUE WITH THE CONVERSATION.

DR. OLSON, REAL QUICK, WE HAVE A QUESTION FROM THE FLOOR.

MR. GLICK. YEAH, ONE OF THE LAST TOPIC ON THAT SLIDE WAS SOMETHING THAT'S BECOME OF NATIONAL INTEREST.

WE HAD A SCHOOL SHOOTING IN THE METROPLEX, AND THE YOUNG MAN WHO WAS ACCUSED HAS USED THE WORD MULTIPLE TIMES, AS HAS HIS PARENTS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE WORD BULLYING.

SO I'D LIKE TO ASK ALL THE PROFESSIONALS HERE, WE KNOW IT OCCURS.

WE KNOW BULLYING OCCURS.

WHAT ARE WE AS A DISTRICT DOING BASED ON WHAT WE HEARD IN THAT SCHOOL DISTRICT? I GET A LOT OF CALLS ON THAT.

HAVE WE MADE ANY CHANGES FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT? HAVE WE MADE ANY CHANGES FROM SECURITY? I THINK WE ALL WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING IN REGARDS TO WHAT HAPPENED JUST RECENTLY. THANK YOU FOR ASKING THAT AND IT'S A TRAGIC, TRAGIC EVENT AND WE KNOW THAT THEY DON'T ALWAYS END IN THOSE KINDS OF EVENTS, BUT IT'S STILL BAD.

IT'S TRAGIC FOR EVERY STUDENT WHO EXPERIENCES BULLYING AND THERE ARE KIDS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING IT AND WHAT WE'RE DOING IN THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT IS WE'RE NOT ONLY LOOKING AT THE PERSON WHO'S BEING BULLIED, BUT THE PERSON WHO IS THE BULLY, BECAUSE BOTH OF THEM, YOU'VE HEARD THE PHRASE HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE.

SO I DO KNOW THAT YOU'LL BE HEARING FROM MARY GARCIA LATER, I THINK TODAY, MAYBE, AND SHE AND I, OUR DEPARTMENT, AS WELL AS HER DEPARTMENT, HAS KIND OF TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE REFERRALS THAT WE'VE SEEN IN REVIEW 360 BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THE STANDARD PROTOCOL THROUGH THE SAFETY AND SECURITY DEPARTMENT IS HAVING THOSE ALLEGATIONS OF BULLYING TO BE DOCUMENTED AND REVIEWED 360 AND I KNOW THAT'S HANDLED BY THAT DEPARTMENT, SO THEY COULD PROBABLY SPEAK MORE THOROUGHLY ABOUT THAT.

FROM OUR DEPARTMENT, WHAT WE DO IS WE DO PRESENTATIONS ON IT, WE GO INTO CLASSROOMS. WE IN FACT, JUST ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO, WE CREATED SOMETHING ABOUT BEING AN UPSTANDER.

WE DID THE START WITH HELLO CAMPAIGN WITH THE SANDY HOOK PROMISE, AND ALL THOSE WERE IN AN EFFORT FOR, FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE, THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT.

WHAT WE DO IS WE EDUCATE AND WE SUPPORT STUDENTS.

WE TRY TO LET IT BE KNOWN THAT'S HAPPENING AS FAR AS THE DOCUMENTATION AND THE FOLLOW THROUGH. AS FAR AS THE WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THAT AND THAT'S THE SECURITY DEPARTMENT AND I KNOW THEY WORK WITH MARY GARCIA ON THAT AS WELL.

I JUST WANT TO INTERJECT ON THAT TOPIC.

WHEN WE SPEAK OF BULLYING, THERE'S REALLY TWO FORMS OF BULLYING.

THOSE ARE OVERT BULLYING OF CONFRONTATION WHEN YOU TRY TO DEHUMANIZE SOMEONE, ESPECIALLY IN A PUBLIC MANNER, IT COULD HAPPEN ON FACEBOOK.

UNFORTUNATELY, OUR STUDENTS HAVE A LOT OF BAD MODELS AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA WE'RE SEEING A LOT OF ADULTS PORTRAY BULLYING ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THEN THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEIR KIDS GET PUNISHED WHENEVER IT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOMS. OK, SO WE'RE SENDING MIXED MESSAGES OUT THERE.

SO THE FIRST FORM OF BULLYING IS VERY OVERT.

HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING? WE NEED TO HAVE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS TO IDENTIFY THOSE THINGS, OK, BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING

[00:35:04]

TO SEE THE SECOND FORM OF BULLYING, WHICH IS EQUALLY OR JUST AS HURTFUL.

SO THE FIRST FORM OF BULLYING, IF I GO IN, IF I HAVE A POLICE OFFICER THERE, I'M SMART ENOUGH NOT TO DO IT IN FRONT OF AN OFFICER BECAUSE THEY'RE TRAINED.

I'M NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING. I'M GOING TO ACT, OK, I'M GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT I'M IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT THE MOST ASTUTE ADULTS ARE NOT AROUND.

BUT I CAN RECOGNIZE ADULTS THAT WILL TURN A BLIND EYE AND SO IF WE DON'T HAVE KIDS THAT TELL US THROUGH ANONYMOUS ALERTS THAT GO TO THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT, GO THROUGH A TRUSTED ADULT OR SOMEBODY THAT KNOWS WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING IF WE DON'T HAVE THE INFORMATION. OK, SO THAT'S THE FIRST THING.

THE SECOND FORM OF BULLYING IS HARDER TO SEE.

IT'S IGNORING PEOPLE, NOT ALLOWING THEM TO BE PART OF SOMETHING ACTING LIKE THEY DON'T EXIST, ACTING LIKE THEY DON'T MATTER.

THAT BULLYING CUTS DEEP BECAUSE YOU COULD SHOW UP TO SOMEBODY AND TO NOT BE RECOGNIZED OR OR ENGAGED WITH IS HARDER TO RECOGNIZE THOSE INTERNAL FEELINGS ON HOW THAT FEELS, BECAUSE VERY FEW PEOPLE WILL SAY, HEY, I'M HERE, WHY ARE YOU IGNORING ME? THEY JUST GO IN THEIR OWN HEAD AND THEY RETREAT AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE THINKING OR FEELING BECAUSE NOBODY HAS INCLUDED THEM AND THAT'S WHAT TAKES A SPECIALIST FROM WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THOSE NUANCES, THE INTRICACIES.

GO SEE A COUNSELOR.

GO TALK TO SOMEBODY BECAUSE BOTH OF THOSE THINGS ARE VERY HURTFUL.

OK? AND ONE IS EASIER TO SEE THAN THE OTHER AND THAT'S WHY WE NEED THESE TRAINED PROFESSIONALS TO HELP US.

AND YOU SPEAK TO THAT AND THAT'S WHY THE START WITH HELLO IS A GREAT CAMPAIGN HAVE STARTED BY SANDY HOOK AND THAT'S WHAT WE'VE REALLY COLLABORATED WITH IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

BEING AN UP STANDARD AND OUR ANONYMOUS ALERTS APP, WHICH WAS IMPLEMENTED BY THE SECURITY DEPARTMENT, HAS BEEN FANTASTIC.

I CAN'T TELL YOU THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE PUT THINGS THROUGH AND THEN WE END UP GETTING INVOLVED BECAUSE ANYTIME SOMEBODY'S STATING THAT THERE COULD BE BULLYING, THEN OUR COUNSELORS GET INVOLVED TO TRY TO HELP SUPPORT BECAUSE WE'VE GOT TO ALWAYS REMEMBER, I USED TO WORK FOR CPS AND I REMEMBER I WAS AN INVESTIGATOR AND PEOPLE WOULD ALWAYS SAY, OH MY GOSH, DON'T YOU HATE THOSE PARENTS WHO ARE HURTING THEIR KIDS? AND NO, I DO NOT HATE THEM.

BECAUSE GUESS WHAT? YOU HEAR THEIR STORY AND THEN YOU KIND OF GET IT.

YOU KIND OF UNDERSTAND.

SO THE PERSON WHO'S DOING THE BULLYING WE NEED, WE NEED TO SERVE THEM TO.

SO, IN OUR DEPARTMENT, AND I'LL BE HAPPY TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME OF THE PRESENTATIONS WE'VE CREATED, I'D LOVE TO SHARE THOSE WITH YOU THAT ARE JUST ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO ACCEPT OTHER PEOPLE AS THEY ARE WITHOUT JUDGMENT AND NOT CONCERNING YOURSELF.

IF YOU AGREE WITH EVERY ASPECT OF A PERSON'S LIFE, BUT INCLUDING PEOPLE AND ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO SAY HELLO TO THE PERSON WHO'S SITTING BY THEMSELVES OR WHATEVER.

SO, THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DOING, AND I KNOW THAT THERE'S MUCH MORE WORK TO BE DONE BECAUSE THERE SHOULD BE NO CHILD THAT'S DEPRESSED OR SELF-HARMING OR SUICIDAL BASED UPON BULLYING AND THAT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM THAT WE NEED TO CONTINUE AND CYBERBULLYING AS WELL.

SO WE'VE PUT I KNOW THAT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, WE ALREADY DID SOME PROMOTIONS ABOUT CYBERBULLYING AND TELLING KIDS HOW THEY CAN AVOID THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT UP.

WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SUICIDE A LITTLE BIT MORE EXCLUSIVELY HERE, AND THAT'S JUST PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO SAY SUICIDE AND THEY'RE AFRAID TO TALK ABOUT IT WITH SOMEBODY THEY THINK SOMEBODY SAID THEY NEVER WANT TO SAY.

ARE YOU GOING TO KILL YOURSELF? AND YOU REALLY NEED TO SAY, ARE YOU GOING TO KILL YOURSELF? BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE IS VAGUE AND IT SEEMS AWKWARD WHEN YOU'RE SAYING IT.

BUT STUDIES HAVE PROVEN THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH IT.

YOU APPROACH IT.

YOU KNOW, IF YOU THINK OF THAT, THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAVE POTENTIALLY WANTED TO HARM THEMSELVES AND IN SOMEBODY ASKED THE QUESTION AND THEY ACTUALLY GOT HELP.

THAT'S A LIFE SAVED.

WE'LL NEVER KNOW HOW MANY LIVES HAVE BEEN SAVED, BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT WE'VE DONE.

WE'VE CONDUCTED ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED FIVE INTERVENTION PROTOCOLS SINCE MARCH OF 2019, SO THAT'S ONE THOUSAND--WE COULDN'T HAVE TOLD YOU THAT BEFORE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WAY TO TRACK IT. BUT NOW WE KNOW THAT AT LEAST ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIVE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN LOOKED AT.

BECAUSE WHY? NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL SUICIDAL, BUT BECAUSE SOMEBODY THOUGHT THEY MIGHT BE AND GUESS WHAT? SOMEBODY TALKED TO THEM AND THEY MADE SURE THEY GOT THE RESOURCES THEY NEEDED AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT ONE OF OUR RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELORS HAD DONE A PRESENTATION AT NAAMAN FOREST ON SUICIDE PREVENTION AND DIRECTLY FOLLOWING THAT, LITERALLY WITHIN A DAY, I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A STUDENT SAYING, I DON'T WANT TO LIVE ANYMORE AND I WAS LIKE, HOW AM I GETTING AN EMAIL? LIKE, THAT'S A WEIRD WAY FOR A STUDENT TO REACH OUT TO ME AND IT TURNS OUT I ALWAYS PUT MY EMAIL AND CONTACT INFORMATION AT THE END OF THE SLIDE PRESENTATION, SO WE WERE ABLE, FORTUNATELY, I SAW MY EMAIL RIGHT AWAY.

WE WERE ABLE TO GET TO THAT STUDENT AND THE STUDENT DID GO TO THE HOSPITAL.

THAT SAME WEEK, ANOTHER STUDENT REPORTED THAT THEY HAD OVERHEARD A CHILD WHO SAID THEY

[00:40:06]

WERE GOING TO KILL THEMSELVES, AND THEY HAD A PLAN AT A TIME IN A DAY AND GUESS WHAT? THEY REPORTED THROUGH ANONYMOUS ALERTS AND GUESS WHAT? THAT KID ALSO WENT TO THE HOSPITAL, SO I CAN TELL YOU THAT'S TWO AND THERE'S SO MANY STORIES I COULD TELL YOU ALONG THOSE LINES.

SO WHEN WE SAY, WHAT ARE WE DOING, WE CAN'T PREVENT EVERYONE FROM KILLING THEMSELVES, THAT MIGHT HAPPEN, BUT WE CAN SURE DO A LOT TO TRY TO EDUCATE, AND WE CAN DO A LOT TO TRY TO PROTECT. AND WE COULD DO A LOT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DOCUMENT SO THAT WHENEVER I GO BACK AND I LOOK, AND IF THERE'S A STUDENT WHO MIGHT BE ACTING A CERTAIN WAY, I CAN SAY, OH YES. IN APRIL, TWO YEARS AGO, THEY WERE IN A HOSPITAL, SO WE NEED TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTION. HERE ARE SOME SIGNS OF SUICIDAL IDEATION.

WE HAVE SOME CARDS HERE. I WANT TO PASS OUT IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE YET FOR THE BACK OF YOUR ID. WE CREATED THESE FOR NOT JUST SECONDARY CAMPUSES, WHICH ARE REQUIRED BY THE LAW NOW TO HAVE THIS PHONE NUMBER ON EVERY SECONDARY ID.

BUT WE ALSO CREATED THEM FOR ALL STAFF HERE IN THIS BUILDING AND WHOEVER WANTS ONE, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THIS.

IT'S GOT THE PHONE NUMBERS FOR SUICIDE, IT'S GOT THE SIGNS OF SUICIDAL IDEATION AND YOU KNOW, ANY OF THESE THINGS THAT YOU SEE HERE PREOCCUPATION WITH DEATH AND DYING.

SOME PEOPLE SAY THEY JUST WANT TO GET ATTENTION.

YES, THEY DO. THAT'S TRUE.

THEY DO WANT TO GET ATTENTION. LET'S GIVE THEM SOME ATTENTION BECAUSE THEY NEED IT.

LIKE PEOPLE THINK THAT'S A THING THAT THEY'RE GOING TO IGNORE.

OH, MY KID NEEDS ATTENTION.

I'M GOING TO IGNORE THEM. NO, THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO IGNORE.

IT'S THE TIME TO GIVE THEM HELP AND THIS COULD BE YOUR FRIENDS AND IT COULD BE YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS AND IT COULD BE A STUDENT.

I KNOW THAT MARK QUINN AND MO AND I SHOWED UP ON THE DOOR OF A STAFF MEMBER A YEAR OR SO AGO DURING COVID, AND WE WERE VERY WORRIED BECAUSE GUESS WHAT? SOMEBODY HAD SAID THEIR COWORKER SAID, I'M WORRIED ABOUT THIS PERSON AND WE ARE SITTING THERE SHOWING UP AT THEIR DOOR, YOU KNOW, AND THEY'VE BEEN FANTASTIC TO WORK WITH JUST TOGETHER. I TOLD MO, I SAID, YOU GOT A BACKGROUND IN PSYCHOLOGY OR SOMETHING.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT THEY'VE BEEN FANTASTIC TO WORK WITH.

THEY CARE ABOUT PEOPLE.

SO WHOEVER IT IS, WE'RE GOING TO WORK TOGETHER.

WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH WELLNESS TO ALSO MAKE SURE THAT OUR EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM HELPS WITH THOSE, THOSE PEOPLE AS WELL.

BUT NO MATTER WHO IT IS, IF YOU SEE ANY OF THESE SIGNS, IT'S URGENT.

DON'T SECOND GUESS IT.

IN THIS CASE, THEIR COWORKERS HAD ASKED THEIR SUPERVISOR, HEY, YOU KNOW, WE'RE WORRIED ABOUT THIS, THIS PERSON.

SO WE WENT OUT TO THE HOME TOGETHER AND WE HELPED THIS PERSON, AND THEN WE CREATED IMMEDIATELY THESE SIGNS.

IF YOU'VE SEEN THEM OUT, THEY SAY THAT THEIR STRUGGLE IS YOURS.

I DON'T REMEMBER THE EXACT VERBIAGE, EVEN THOUGH WE CREATED IT.

TIFFANY AND I THERE'S IN OUR DEPARTMENT CREATED A SIGN THAT'S GIANT THAT YOU'LL SEE THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT THAT SAYS, CONTACT YOUR SUPERVISOR, GET HELP.

DON'T LEAVE THEM ALONE.

I WOULD JUST SAY, IF THERE'S ONE THING TO REMEMBER, IF SOMEBODY IS YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT THEM, DO NOT LEAVE THEM ALONE.

IF YOU CAN JUST DO THAT, THEN WE CAN GET THEM HELP.

JUST DON'T LEAVE THEM ALONE. THAT'S THE THING.

REMEMBER THAT IT'S AN EMERGENCY.

JUST LIKE A FIRE, A HOUSE ON FIRE, SOMEBODY BLEEDING IS NO DIFFERENT.

IT'S AN EMERGENCY. THEY NEED HELP.

SO IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS, WE WORK THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DISTRICT, WE SEE COMMON MENTAL HEALTH TRENDS AS WE ARE WORKING THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.

OF COURSE, IN OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, WE SEE OFTENTIMES THAT THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH ADHD AND THEY'RE ALSO DEALING WITH EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCES.

SO WE'RE CONSTANTLY BASICALLY MONITORING THAT.

WE'RE WORKING WITH THOSE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS LIKE THE SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AND WHEN WE HAVE OUR ARDS AND WE WE'RE MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE ALL WORKING AS A TEAM.

SO THE BIGGEST PART OF ACTUALLY MAKING PROGRESS IN MENTAL HEALTH REALLY IS A COMMUNICATION STRATEGY BECAUSE IF WE'RE TALKING TO EACH OTHER AND WE'RE KEEPING IT FRONT IN MIND ABOUT THESE DIFFERENT PROBLEMS THAT OUR KIDS ARE FACING, OF COURSE, AND ALSO OUR FOLKS THAT WORK WITHIN THE DISTRICT, YOU KNOW, BEING IN EDUCATION CAN BE A VERY STRESSFUL WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SO WE HAVE TO CONSTANTLY WORK TOGETHER, TALK TOGETHER.

WE KNOW THAT THERE IS GENDER DYSPHORIA.

OBVIOUSLY, YOU PROBABLY HEAR QUITE A BIT IN THE NEWS ABOUT ISSUES RELATED TO THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY. AND YOU KNOW, I WAS TALKING TO DR.

OLSON SOME TIME AGO AND YOU KNOW, THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT ATTITUDES AND PERSPECTIVES ON THIS ISSUE. BUT HERE'S WHAT REALLY MATTERS.

IF A PERSON IS HURTING, THEY'RE HURTING AND IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT THEIR ATTITUDES OR BELIEFS HAPPEN TO BE, THEY'RE IN HURTING SITUATION AND THAT AND WHEN A PERSON IS HURTING, THAT AFFECTS OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY, IT AFFECTS EVERY ONE OF US.

SO THAT'S WHY WE SUPPORT THEM AS WE DO.

THAT'S WHY WE TRY TO FIND RESOURCES THAT CAN HELP THEM.

WE HAVE A LOT OF FOLKS IN OUR IN OUR IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT ARE DEALING WITH ANXIETY AND

[00:45:01]

DEPRESSION. OF COURSE, COVID IS A HAS BEEN A BIG FACTOR IN THAT IN THE LAST 24 MONTHS.

LIKE I SPOKE ABOUT BEFORE SELF HARM, WE, OF COURSE, DR.

OLSON TALKED ABOUT SUICIDE PROTOCOLS AND HERE'S WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AGENCY REFERRALS.

YOU KNOW, WE KNOW THAT TEACHERS AND OUR ADMIN FOLKS, YOU KNOW, THEY ARE TOP NOTCH AND THEY'RE GREAT AT WHAT THEY DO, BUT WE KNOW THAT THE TYPE OF CARE SOMETIMES THAT OUR KIDS NEED, WE NEED TO FIND THE SOURCE, WE NEED TO FIND A RESOURCE FOR THEM.

SO THAT BECOMES VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE ALL DOING THAT, THAT WE'RE MAKING OURSELVES MORE FAMILIAR WITH THOSE RESOURCES, THAT WE CAN HELP THESE KIDS AND WE GET THEM THE HELP THEY NEED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS.

THIS GOES TO TALKING ABOUT BULLYING A LITTLE BIT AND THIS COULD BE EITHER IN PLATONIC OR ROMANTIC SITUATIONS, JUST TOXIC AND THAT'S WHERE MAYBE A KID JUST NEEDS TO BE SEPARATED FROM ANOTHER COUPLE OF KIDS THAT JUST CONSTANTLY EVERY DAY RAINING NEGATIVITY IN THAT KID'S LIFE. THAT KID ISN'T GETTING THE GRADES.

HE'S NOT FOCUSING IN ON THE CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE FOCUSED IN ON, BECAUSE ALL HE'S THINKING ABOUT IS THE THREE OR FOUR KIDS IN THAT CLASS WHO HE THINKS OR PERCEIVES THAT DON'T LIKE HIM AND SO WE HAVE TO BE THERE AND BE A SUPPORT TO THAT PERSON.

SO I WANT YOU TO TAKE A MOMENT AND THINK ABOUT TAKE A MINUTE TO REFLECT OVER YOUR EXPERIENCES OVER 2020 AND 2021 AND JUST LOOK UP THERE AND THINK ABOUT THOSE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED THESE LAST TWO YEARS.

NOW YOU'VE HAD A MOMENT TO THINK ABOUT THAT.

IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, HAVE YOU HAD THE DESIRE, HAVE YOU HAD A NEED? I'M USED TO SPEAKING IN A ROOM WITHOUT A MIC.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT MAYBE YOU NEEDED TO REACH OUT TO SOMEBODY AND JUST TALK TO THEM ABOUT AND PROCESS WHAT YOU'RE FEELING? I'M SURE YOU HAVE.

NOW THINK ABOUT A STUDENT WHO DOES HAVE ALL THE RESOURCES YOU HAVE.

YOUR EDUCATION, YOUR DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES, YOUR FAMILY SUPPORT SYSTEM, ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE. DO YOU THINK THEY NEED SOME SUPPORT? I'M SURE YOU DO.

AND GUESS WHAT? THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE.

SO WHEN WE TURN THAT MIRROR, YOU START LOOKING AT OURSELVES, WE HAVE TO BE AWARE OF WHAT'S GOING ON WITHIN US AND SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH FOR OTHERS, RIGHT, WHAT IS MY OWN PERSONAL HISTORY? WHAT IS OUR HISTORY? YOU KNOW, DO WE HAVE ANY DIAGNOSES AND SOMETIMES MAYBE DO WE NEED A DIAGNOSIS? DO WE NEED AN ASSESSMENT? WHAT IS THE TRAUMA THAT WE'VE HAD IN OUR LIVES? WHAT IS OUR RELATIONSHIPS LIKE? THESE THINGS WE BRING WITH US? THEY DON'T JUST STAY IN OUR HOMES.

THEY COME HERE. WE HAVE CELLULAR DEVICES.

WE HAVE INTERNET AND SO WE STAY CONNECTED AND THEY STAY WITH US AND SOMETIMES WE TRANSFER SOME OF THAT, YOU KNOW, INTO OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR COWORKERS OR OUR STUDENTS OR WHATEVER OUR JOB MAY ENTAIL.

SOMETIMES WE BRING THESE SITUATIONS INTO NEW SITUATIONS.

I HAVE A FRIEND AND SHE'S A SUPERVISOR, AND SHE WAS HAVING A LOT OF NEGATIVE FEEDBACK FROM ONE OF HER EMPLOYEES.

COME TO FIND OUT AFTER JUST A HEART TO HEART, THE EMPLOYEE SAYS, YOU KNOW WHAT, I JUST HAVE NOT HAD ANY POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WITH FEMALE BOSSES AND BECAUSE YOU WERE A FEMALE AND I JUST THOUGHT, YOU'RE GOING TO BE LIKE THE OTHER ONES, I DID NOT EVEN GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY AND SO WE SOMETIMES HAVE THESE THINGS THAT WE HAVE STRONGHOLDS WITHIN OURSELVES. AND SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT OUR SELF-AWARENESS IS, ARE THERE SOME THINGS I NEED TO UNPACK BEFORE I EVEN SHOW UP TO WORK? AND THEN EVEN WHEN WE THINK ABOUT SELF-AWARENESS, WE HAVE PROJECTION, YOU KNOW, THE FEELINGS I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF.

I WANT YOU TO BE JUST AS AMBITIOUS AS I AM, BUT IS THAT PERSON, IS THEIR IDEA OF AMBITION THE SAME THING, YOU KNOW? WE'RE IN EDUCATION. WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO FINISH, BUT LET ME FIGURE OUT WHAT IS REALLY WITHIN YOU TO WEAR THAT MAYBE SOMETHING THAT YOU WANT TO DO CAN STILL ALIGN WITH THIS GOAL OF GETTING YOU TO GRADUATION.

THAT MAY NOT BE THE APPARENT GOAL, BUT THAT'S MY GOAL FOR YOU.

BUT HOW CAN I GET THAT MOTIVATION? BUT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THAT PROJECTION.

WHAT AM I PUTTING ON TO THIS STUDENT? THAT MAY BE A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN WHAT THEY CAN REALLY MANAGE AT THIS POINT AND THEN LASTLY, THINK ABOUT TRIGGERS.

WE ALL HAVE OUR TRIGGERS, BUT SOMETIMES WE BECOME TRIGGERED BEFORE WE REALIZE IT IS A TRIGGER. SO IF IT'S THE WEATHER, IF IT'S CERTAIN TYPES OF MEETINGS, SOMEONE THAT YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO COME ACROSS IN YOUR DAY.

MAYBE YOU'RE ALREADY TRIGGERED AND SO YOU'RE ALREADY GOING IN THERE WITH A CERTAIN TYPE OF MOOD OR AN ASSUMPTION THAT IS GOING TO BE THE SAME LIKE IT WAS LAST TIME AND WE'RE NOT GIVING IT THE BEST IDEA, THE BEST OPTION FOR IT TO BE A POSITIVE OR A DIFFERENT

[00:50:04]

EXPERIENCE. AND SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH, THERE ARE THINGS THAT WE CAN CHECK WITHIN OURSELVES TO MAKE SURE WE'RE GOING TO BE OK AND LIKE MY COLLEAGUE MENTIONED, WE TEND TO HAVE MORE SUPPORTS AS ADULTS WHO'VE GONE THROUGH SOME THINGS, SOME MORE THAN OTHERS. BUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR OUR STUDENTS, WE ALSO THINK ABOUT OURSELVES BECAUSE EVERYONE'S BORN INTO DIFFERENT SITUATIONS.

THEY HAVE PARENTAL STRESS, WHATEVER THAT MEANS AND THAT COULD BE FOR PEOPLE WHO COME FROM PARENTS WITH AFFLUENCE AND THOSE WITHOUT STRESS, WHATEVER IT MAY LOOK LIKE AND WE HAD THAT SUBSTANCE USE, WHETHER THAT'S LEGAL OR ILLEGAL, RIGHT? AND THEN THAT POVERTY.

SO WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THESE RISK FACTORS, WE WANT TO BE THAT UMBRELLA OF PROTECTIVE FACTORS. SOMETIMES WE WANT TO BE AN UMBRELLA, PROBABLY LIKE THIS MORNING WITH THE RAIN.

BUT WHAT DOES THAT UMBRELLA LOOK LIKE? IT LOOKS LIKE? THE ATTACHMENT, GETTING THAT ENGAGEMENT AND FINDING A GOOD FIT.

SO LIKE, I TALK ABOUT AMBITION, WELL, WHAT WILL HELP YOU STAY ENGAGED OR REALLY BE COMMITTED TO THE DISTRICT? YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY IN THIS ROLE, BUT MAYBE THERE'S A ROLE AS A BETTER FIT FOR YOU.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND MAKING SURE IF THE STUDENT IS BEHIND, BUT WE KNOW HOW TO CONNECT THEM TO SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP THEM GET TO THAT POINT WHERE THEY'RE ABLE TO DO THEIR BEST. THE SOCIAL CONNECTIONS, GETTING THEM ENGAGED IN ALL THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE IN CLASS.

I HAD A STUDENT LAST YEAR WHO WAS NOT ENGAGED, BUT WE FOUND A WAY WHERE HE WAS EXCITED ABOUT ONE OF THE TECH PROGRAMS WITHIN THE HIGH SCHOOL AND SO HE STARTED PERFORMING BETTER AND SO FINDING THAT ENGAGEMENT IS WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TO WHERE THE PERSON WHO DOESN'T WANT TO SHOW UP TO SCHOOL NOW HAS MORE MOTIVATION TO SHOW UP AND DO THE BEST THAT THEY CAN DO AND SO WHEN WE TALK ABOUT PROTECTIVE FACTORS, WE ARE ALL A PART OF THAT.

COMMUNICATING, LETTING PEOPLE KNOW WHAT IS ALL ACCESSIBLE TO US AND WHAT IS ALSO ACCESSIBLE TO US IS THE EAP.

IF YOU'VE NEVER USED IT, PROUD PROPONENT FOR THE EAP AS A PERSON WHO HAS USED IT AND BENEFITED AND SEEN THE BENEFIT IN MY LIFE, BUT EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM WITH GISD EMPLOYEES IS A GREAT RESOURCE BECAUSE IT REMINDS US THAT SELF CARE IS YES, IT'S SELFISH, BUT IT ALLOWS US TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES SO WE CAN TAKE CARE OF THE ONES THAT WE ARE AROUND TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT THAT TOXIC INDIVIDUAL IN THAT PERSON'S LIFE AND SO WITH THAT, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE IF I AM OR AM NOT COMMITTED TO A THERAPIST, THROUGH THE EAP OR THROUGH OUTSIDE OF THE OR INSURANCE THAT WHAT IS MY SELF-CARE PLAN? WE TALKED ABOUT SELF-CARE A LOT WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT TRAUMA INFORMED CARE LAST YEAR AND WHEN IT'S ON OUR MIND IT'S ON OUR MIND, BUT HAVE WE PUT THAT ON THE BACK BURNER? HAVE WE NOW SAID, OH WELL, I DON'T REALLY NEED TO WALK AROUND AS MUCH.

I DON'T NEED TO ENGAGE WITH MY FAMILY BECAUSE I CAN GET OUT NOW AND WE MAY ALL BE IN THE SAME ROOM, BUT MAYBE ON OUR PHONE, MAYBE WATCHING THINGS IN CERTAIN ROOMS. BUT WHAT DOES MY HEALTH CARE PLAN LOOK LIKE TO WHERE I'M MANAGING MY OWN STRESS, MAKING SURE I'M POURING INTO MYSELF SO THAT I CAN CONTINUE TO POUR OUT TO OTHER PEOPLE? AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS I KNOW DR.

OLSON HAS MENTIONED QUITE A BIT OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE PROVIDED WITHIN THE DISTRICT.

THE CALMING ROOM PALETTE IS A GREAT LINK.

I'VE USED IT FOR MYSELF AND ALSO FOR A LOT OF THE STUDENTS THAT I WORK WITH AND SO JUST REMINDING OURSELVES THAT STAYING CONNECTED IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROTECTIVE FACTORS THAT WE CAN DO TO MAKE SURE THAT WE TAKE CARE OF OUR MENTAL HEALTH.

OK, SO I KNOW WE'RE NEARING THE END OF THE MEETING, WE'RE NOT GOING TO TRY TO KEEP YOU TOO LONG, BUT WE DO WANT TO DO A QUICK GAME AND SO JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH.

CAMILLE'S JUST GOING TO PASS THE ENVELOPE TO A PERSON IN VARIOUS AREAS AND YOU ALL CAN KIND OF GATHER AROUND THAT PERSON AND WORK TOGETHER AS YOU WISH.

THE IDEA IS THAT EACH ONE OF THESE ENVELOPES CONTAINS A SCENARIO, AND IT WOULD BE MUCH LIKE THE SCENARIO THAT WE ARE FACED WITH IN OUR DISTRICT AND WE WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO CREATE THE SCENARIOS LIKE WE WANT THEM, BUT THEY'RE NOT AND FORTUNATELY, PEOPLE ARE REAL PEOPLE AND SOME OF THE SCENARIOS THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, THAT WE ARE FACED WITH, IT'S NOT ALWAYS REAL CLEAR, HOW DO YOU HANDLE THIS? SO IF YOU ALL WANT TO KIND OF LOOK TOGETHER IN GROUPS AND WORK WITH JUST FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES HERE, LOOK AT YOUR SCENARIO AND THEN WITHIN THAT ENVELOPE, YOU SEE FIVE RESOURCES OF THOSE FIVES.

OF THOSE FIVE RESOURCES, WHAT THREE RESOURCES WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR THAT FOR THAT PERSON IN YOUR SCENARIO? WE'LL JUST GIVE YOU A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO LOOK OVER THOSE.

DR. OLSON, WE ONLY HAVE TWO MINUTES LEFT.

[00:55:06]

OK, SO YOU'VE HOPEFULLY HAD ENOUGH TIME TO KIND OF JUST GLANCE AT IT AND LOOK AT THE RESOURCES. THIS IS BASICALLY WHAT WE DEAL WITH, THE TYPES OF THINGS WE DEAL WITH AND WE'D LOVE FOR IT TO BE SIMPLE AND WE COULD GIVE EVERYBODY THE SAME RESOURCE.

BUT OBVIOUSLY THAT'S NOT THE CASE.

SO WE'RE JUST GOING TO KIND OF GO THROUGH HERE, AND IF JORGE WAS YOUR PERSON, YOU'LL SEE HERE, HERE ARE THE RESOURCES THAT WE WOULD RECOMMEND FOR GEORGE IF THAT WAS YOUR PERSON.

ANGELA, HERE ARE SOME RESOURCES THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR HER.

COACH LIN, THOSE ARE SOME HELPFUL RESOURCES EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM, VERY HELPFUL AND THEN, TOM, HERE ARE THE RESOURCES THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR HIM AND FINALLY, LAYN AND LIZ. SO WE'RE GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME REFERRAL AGENCIES RIGHT HERE BEFORE YOU LEAVE, BUT ALSO THIS IS ON OUR WEBSITE.

HERE ARE SOME MORE RESOURCES THAT ARE AVAILABLE.

WE JUST WANTED YOU TO KIND OF GET A GLIMPSE INTO WHAT IT'S LIKE IF YOU ARE A RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELOR. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SCENARIOS YOU MAY BE FACED WITH AND WHAT ARE SOME RESOURCES WE COULD GIVE? AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE MORE TRAINING FROM ANY OF US, YOU KNOW, MENTAL HEALTH, FIRST AID OR ANY OTHER TRAINING WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO CONDUCT THOSE.

HERE IS OUR INFORMATION.

FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO ME ANYTIME.

THAT'S MY CELL PHONE NUMBER. YOU CAN TEXT ME ANY TIME.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. WE APPRECIATE IT.

[APPLAUSE] GOOD JOB. THANK YOU.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IN LIGHT OF MR. GLICK QUESTION ABOUT BULLYING AND THE MANSFIELD SITUATION, OF COURSE, FFI LEGAL AND LOCAL GUIDES THE BULLY PROCESS, IT HASN'T CHANGED.

THE DEFINITION HASN'T CHANGED.

IT'S PERVASIVE, SEVERE PERSISTENT BEHAVIOR OR ONE SIGNIFICANT EVENT THAT HAPPENS THAT INTERFERES WITH THIS KID'S EDUCATION EXPERIENCE.

SO THAT'S BULLYING. SOMETIMES I WOULD SAY 10 PERCENT OF THE TIME IT'S STATE-DEFINED BULLYING, 90 PERCENT OF THE TIME, IT'S SOMEBODY BEING A JERK TO MY KID, AND I'M NOT GOING TO ALLOW THAT EITHER.

AS FAR AS MO DO YOU AND MARK WANT TO COME UP HERE FOR A SECOND.

I WANTED YOU ALL TO SAY A FEW WORDS OUT LOUD ABOUT THE SAFETY THINGS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE IN GARLAND ISD TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS.

GOOD AFTERNOON, MY NAME IS [INAUDIBLE] EVERYBODY CALL ME MO, I'M SECURITY LEADER OPERATIONS, SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, SIR, WE HAVE A SEARCH ENGINE THAT'S CALLED CONTENT KEEPER. OUR CONTENT KEEPER MANAGE ALL THE DISTRICT IT EQUIPMENT, LOOKING FOR KEYWORDS FOR SELF-HARM, ASSAULT, SHOOT, BULLY ANYTHING THAT'S GOING TO BE OUT OF THE ORDINARY FOR A SEARCH ENGINE FOR STUDENTS TO BE SEARCHING FOR ON CAMPUS.

ALSO, WE UTILIZE OUR ANONYMOUS ALERT APP WHERE KIDS CAN CALL IN AND SAY, HEY, WE GOT THIS STUDENT THAT POTENTIALLY MIGHT THREATEN THE SCHOOL, OR THIS KID HAS SAID THAT HE'S GOT A GUN ON CAMPUS.

ALSO, WE UTILIZE OUR SROS AND OUR TRI-CITY WHO GET INFORMATION THAT WE DON'T GET SINCE THEY ARE ON THE CAMPUS MORE THAN WE ARE, WHO ALSO ASSIST US BY TELLING US, HEY, WE GOT WORD FROM THIS STUDENT. IT'S BASED OFF THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT THEY BUILD AND THEN OUR CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICERS, THEY DO.

THE CSIS ON THE CAMPUS, SO WHY ARE THEY'RE DOING THOSE CSIS, THOSE VISITS, THEY'RE BUILDING A RAPPORT WITH THOSE KIDS WHO MIGHT SAY, HEY, WE GOT THIS ISSUE GOING ON, WE GOT THAT ISSUE GOING ON. BUT WITH THOSE ANONYMOUS ALERTS, WE ASSIST CINDY RODRIGUEZ AND STUDENT SERVICES BY SENDING HER THOSE EMAILS SAYING, HEY, THIS IS WHAT WE'VE GOT GOING ON WITH BULLYING. CAN YOU LOOK INTO THAT BECAUSE I KNOW THEY PULLED THOSE REVIEW 360 TO KEEP UP WITH THE INFORMATION TO MAKE SURE THAT THE CAMPUS LEVEL IS DEALING WITH THOSE KIDS WHO ARE GETTING BULLIED AND ASSISTING THOSE KIDS WHO ARE THE BULLY.

ALSO, THAT MAKES ME THINK OF OUR BEHAVIORAL THREAT ASSESSMENT, AND WE WORK HAND IN HAND WITH COUNSELING ON THAT AND WE HAVE AN ADULT WHO LOOKS LIKE A TEENAGER AND WE DO I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO CALL IT, A BREACH EXERCISE AND SEND THAT INTRUSION AND IT'S ALWAYS VERY INTERESTING. OUR CAMPUS EMERGENCY OPERATIONS PLANS AT THE BACK OF THAT, WE GO THROUGH IT PAGE BY PAGE WITH EACH CAMPUS.

AT THE BACK, IT'S UNIQUE FACTORS AND IT COULD BE EIGHTY THREE EXTERNAL DOORS THAT A KID COULD GET IN WHO DOESN'T EVEN GO TO SCHOOL THERE ANYMORE, LIKE NICHOLAS CRUZ, WHO WAS JUST SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON.

DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE POLICE? SURE. WE'VE ALSO ADDED OUR POLICE OFFICERS, OUR SROS GET THE ANONYMOUS ALERT BOTH ON TEXT AND ON EMAIL. SO EVERY TIME AN ALERT COMES TO THEIR SCHOOL, THEY AUTOMATICALLY GET AN UPDATE SO THEY CAN IMMEDIATELY GO INTO ACTION ON THAT.

THE RELATIONSHIP THAT WE HAVE WITH ALL THREE OF OUR CITIES, OUR SROS IS AWESOME.

WE ARE HAND IN HAND, WE TRAIN WITH THEM, WE TALK TO THEM, I TALK TO THEM ON A DAILY BASIS.

[01:00:04]

ALL THREE OF THE SERGEANTS AND LIEUTENANTS MANY SROS.

SO WE ARE CONSTANTLY IN COMMUNICATION ON WHAT'S GOING ON IN THESE SCHOOLS, WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO DEAL WITH CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS, WHAT THEY'VE DONE AND THAT TYPE OF THING.

SO LIKE I SAID, WE'RE CONSTANTLY TALKING TO EACH OTHER AND THAT'S WHY OUR RANDOM SEARCHES ARE SO IMPORTANT. WE GO TO THOSE CAMPUS AND WE CATCH THOSE KIDS OFF GUARD.

WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY KNOW THAT, HEY, WE ARE AWARE THAT WE ARE AWARE THAT YOU'RE HERE EDUCATION, BUT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE ALSO NOT BRINGING A WEAPON OR ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE ON THAT CAMPUS.

SO WE GO ABOVE AND BEYOND WITH THOSE RANDOM SEARCHES.

SO WE THANK JOSH AND HIS TEAM WITH THOSE K-9 BECAUSE WE HAVE SOME AWESOME DOGS THIS YEAR AND THEY HELP US OUT VERY WELL.

THEY ARE SUPERIOR DOGS, VERY WELL TRAINED.

IF THERE'S NOTHING ELSE, I THINK DR.

LOPEZ IS GOING TO GIVE US SOME CLOSING REMARKS.

FROM THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS, DID YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE? I JUST HAD IN GENERAL, YOU SHOWED A DATA POINT A MINUTE AGO ABOUT SEVENTEEN HUNDRED WHAT WE CALL THEM INTERVENTIONS OR SITUATIONS WHERE PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED IN COUNSELING. DO WE KEEP THAT ALSO ON REPORTED COUNSELING FOR THE BULLYING OR FOR PHYSICAL CONFRONTATIONS AND ALL THAT? AND DO WE KNOW WHAT THE TREND IS CURRENTLY? IS IT ANY DIFFERENT DURING COVID OR IS IT ABOUT THE SAME? OK, SO GLAD YOU ASKED THAT.

MY HUSBAND'S IN LAW ENFORCEMENT; HE SENT ME AN ARTICLE TEN MINUTES BEFORE WE CAME UP HERE ABOUT THIS INCREASE IN VIOLENCE AND AGGRESSION POST-COVID OR I GUESS WE'RE STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF IT, IF WE'RE HONEST.

I WAS GOING TO POST IT ON MY TWITTER, BUT I CHANGED MY MIND BECAUSE THERE'S NOT ONE BIT OF SILVER LINING IN THIS ARTICLE, AND I HATE TO BE THE PERSON TO JUST PUT OUT A BIG FAT NEGATIVE SANDWICH.

BUT YES, IT IS A REAL THING.

AS FAR AS HOW DO WE DOCUMENT AND FOLLOW UP, SHE HAS HER PROCESS AND THEY FOLLOW UP ON THE SEVENTEEN HUNDRED AND IT STAYS IN THERE WITH BEHAVIORAL THREAT ASSESSMENT.

FINALLY, NOW THE LAW HAS ALLOWED US TO KEEP TRACK OF THAT.

IN THE PAST, IT WAS TABULA RASA.

EVERY YEAR YOU WIPE CLEAN THAT THING AND SO BULLYING, IF IT'S PERVASIVE AND SEVERE AND ONGOING AND YOU BULLIED MY KID IN THIRD GRADE AND FIFTH GRADE AND SIXTH GRADE, BUT EVERY YEAR YOU GET TO START OVER.

HOW AM I EVER GOING TO PROVE AS AN ADMINISTRATOR THAT KID BULLIED MY KID? WE'RE THROWING AWAY THE EVIDENCE SO WE DON'T THROW AWAY THE EVIDENCE ANYMORE.

WE HAVE A WAY OF TRACKING IT.

IS THAT THE POLICE, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OR BOTH KEEP THOSE FILES? THAT IS US SPECIFICALLY, WE KEEP THAT FILE.

BUT ANOTHER GOOD THING ABOUT THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT IS WE HAVE CONVERSATIONS IN A CONFERENCE ROOM AND EVERYBODY'S THERE THAT NEEDS TO BE THERE.

IN THE PAST, IT WAS JUST THE ADMINISTRATORS AND THE TEACHERS, AND WE DIDN'T CALL THAT CAFETERIA LADY WHO HAS THE CLOSEST RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT KID OR THE SRO AT THE OTHER SCHOOL THAT HE JUST TRANSFERRED FROM, WHO SAW HIM MAKING A SIGN LIKE A GUN.

GET ALL THOSE PEOPLE AT THE TABLE TOGETHER AND THIS DISTRICT IS REALLY GOOD JOB OF THAT.

I'VE BEEN INVOLVED IN A FEW OF THEM.

IT'S PRETTY AMAZING TO WATCH DR.

JARED, DO WE HAVE A WAY TO BE AWARE OF OR TRACK INCIDENCES BOTH ON AND OFF CAMPUS THAT FALL UNDER THE SAME DEFINITION BULLYING OR PHYSICAL CONFRONTATIONS? IF OFF-CAMPUS BULLYING IS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION, WE CAN MAKE IT OUR BUSINESS NOW FOR A LONG TIME. AGAIN, WE SAID, WELL, IT HAPPENED OFF CAMPUS OR SHE SAID, YOU WERE, YOU KNOW, A BIG, UGLY PERSON ON FACEBOOK ON A SATURDAY.

WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING.

THAT IS NOT NECESSARILY TRUE.

IF THAT THING IS BROUGHT INTO MY SCHOOL AND AFFECTS SUSIE'S ABILITY TO HAVE AN EDUCATION, THEN IT'S MY BUSINESS AND I'M GLAD THE LAW CHANGED FOR THAT THREE SESSIONS AGO.

SO IF A PARENT HAS A CHILD THAT IS EXPERIENCING BULLYING OF SOME FORM OR FASHION, BOTH ON AND OFF CAMPUS, WHO'S THE FIRST CALL THE PARENT SHOULD MAKE TO TO CHECK INTO THAT AND RESOLVE THAT? DIFFERENT KIDS FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

SOME FEEL VERY COMFORTABLE WITH THEIR COUNSELOR AND IF I WAS THE MOM, I WOULD SAY, DO YOU WANT TO GO TALK TO YOUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OR TO YOUR COUNSELOR BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO TALK TO SOMEBODY TODAY AND GET IT ALL OUT THERE.

SO, START WITH THE CAMPUS? YES, ALWAYS.

AND SO MY QUESTION WAS A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE DATA POINTS.

I DON'T NEED A WHOLE BUNCH OF DATA.

I'M JUST MORE CURIOUS IN THE TREND.

YOU SAID A NATIONAL ARTICLE, MAYBE NOTICING AN UPTICK IN MORE VIOLENT BEHAVIOR, BUT I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON WITHIN OUR SPECIFIC DISTRICT.

JUST FROM A TREND LINE, IF THERE ARE DATA POINTS THAT WE KEEP TRACK OF.

[01:05:04]

YES, THERE ARE.

I CAN'T THINK OF WHAT IT'S CALLED, BUT YES, THE REVIEW 360 DATA POINTS AND I WOULD I WILL GET WITH MARY GARCIA AND MAKE SURE THAT THE BOARD MEMBERS GET THAT.

SO YOU CAN, OF COURSE, LAST YEAR IS NOT A GOOD YEAR.

I'LL PICK TWO YEARS BEFORE THAT SO YOU CAN SEE THE UPTICK IN MUTUAL COMBAT AND THINGS SUCH AS THAT ASSAULT AND HAVE WE NOTICED IF PEOPLE ARE STILL BEATING UP OUR BATHROOMS? WELL, THE DEVIOUS LICK CHANGED.

I THINK LAST WEEK WAS PUNCH YOUR TEACHER IN THE FACE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

I'M NOT SURE WHAT THIS WEEK'S DEVIOUS LICK IS.

OK. I WISH IT WAS BRING ME A DESSERT.

YEAH, SOMETHING. [CHUCKLING] MR. GLICK, DR.

OLSON QUESTION.

SO I THINK IT WAS 2014, DR.

MORRISON CAME TO THE BOARD AND SAID, WE NEED TO HIRE TWO SOCIAL WORKERS, AND WE HAD A LOT OF QUESTIONS. ARE WE IN THAT BUSINESS? OF COURSE, IT TURNS OUT WE ARE.

SO YOU INDICATED THAT DR.

LOPEZ WANTED TO INCREASE STAFF.

TELL US WHAT THAT WAS AND WHO THOSE PEOPLE ARE.

SO WHAT HAPPENED WAS PRIOR TO THIS RESPONSIVE SERVICES TEAM, WE HAD THE LIGHT PROGRAM, WHICH WAS STAFFED BY SCHOOL COUNSELORS AND WHEN DR.

LOPEZ CAME IN AND DR.

RUSSELL KIND OF WAS VERY INSTRUMENTAL IN MAKING SURE THAT WE WERE AWARE OF ALL THE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. THEN THIS WHOLE TEAM TRANSITIONED INTO RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELORS, WHICH IS NOW COMPRISED OF 15 MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AS WELL AS ME.

SO 16 TOTAL ON OUR TEAM AND ALL OF THEM, EXCEPT FOR TWO, TWO ARE STILL SCHOOL COUNSELORS BECAUSE THEY WERE KIND OF GRANDFATHERED IN.

THEY WERE ALREADY DOING THAT JOB, A SIMILAR JOB AND THE REST OF THEM, HOWEVER, ARE LICENSED MASTER SOCIAL WORKERS OR LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS AND SO WE SERVE IN THE CAPACITY OF HELPING STUDENTS ON ALL CAMPUSES AND INTERVENING IN CRISIS AND EDUCATING.

SO WE'RE JUST THRILLED BECAUSE FINALLY, WE ARE HERE TO EDUCATE, BUT WE CAN'T EDUCATE IF WE DON'T ADDRESS THAT PIECE, AS YOU KNOW.

I MEAN, IT HAS TO BE ADDRESSED AND I'M SO GLAD Y'ALL BROUGHT UP THE BULLYING AND I'M SO GLAD YOU BROUGHT UP JUST THE POINT ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT ARE CAUSING SUCH A STRAIN ON OUR STUDENTS AND OUR ADULTS AS WELL.

SO WE HOPE THAT OUR HAVING MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, WE CAN MEET THEM WITH A MORE PROFESSIONAL EYE AND BE ABLE TO HELP THEM IN THE WAY THEY NEED TO AND WHEN WE CAN'T CONDUCT THE SERVICES, WE REFER OUT SO PSYCHIATRIC CARE, FOR EXAMPLE, OBVIOUSLY WE DON'T ADMINISTER MEDICATIONS AND THAT'S QUITE HONESTLY IF YOU WANT TO.

THE NEXT THING IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN HELPING WITH BECAUSE I KNOW YOU HELP WITH A LOT, WE NEED MORE PSYCHIATRIC CARE IN OUR AREA AND I KEEP SAYING THAT REALLY LOUD.

BUT IT'S HARD FOR PEOPLE TO GET THE PSYCHIATRIC CARE AND MEDS THAT THEY NEED.

SO THAT'S STILL AN ISSUE.

BUT WE HAVE SOLVED THE ISSUE.

I THINK OF HAVING STAFF ADEQUATE TO HELP IN OUR DISTRICT WITH MENTAL HEALTH AT THIS POINT IN TIME. THANKS FOR ASKING.

KIND OF MY LAST QUESTION, I HOPE.

SO, THE TEACHER INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROCESS.

WELL, LET ME ASK YOU THIS WAY THE REFERRALS THAT YOU GET OR THE REPORTS ARE THE CONCERNS WHERE YOU INVESTIGATE.

IS THAT PRIMARILY COME FROM THE STUDENT AND THE PARENT, THE TEACHER, PEOPLE WALKING INTO THE HALL? HOW DO WE LEARN THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. IT'S EVERYTHING, LITERALLY, IT'S WE WORK WITH CLOSELY WITH SECURITY.

SO SECURITY OFTEN WILL SAY IN TECHNOLOGY, WHO WILL GIVE US AN INFORMATION ABOUT SOMEBODY WHO IS SEARCHING SUICIDE.

THEY WERE SEARCHING HOW TO KILL MYSELF.

THIS AND THAT. THAT'S ONE WAY WE GET IT.

SECURITY WILL SAY THAT THEY HAD ENCOUNTERED A STUDENT WHO WAS, YOU KNOW, IN A FIGHT OR WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE OR EVEN A STAFF MEMBER, WHOEVER WHO'S ENGAGED IN SOME HARMFUL ACTIVITY AND THEY'LL REACH OUT TO US OR GET ANONYMOUS ALERT.

WE HAVE THE ABILITY, AS I SAID ON OUR WEBSITE, SO THAT ANYBODY CAN GO TO MAKE A REQUEST FOR A COUNSELOR AND THAT'S ON OUR WEBSITE.

SO IT COULD BE A PARENT, A TEACHER, A STUDENT, WHOEVER.

EVERY CAMPUS IS FAIRLY UNIQUE.

AS YOU ALL KNOW, OUR DISTRICT, OUR CAMPUSES ARE SO INDIVIDUAL.

ON SOME OF OUR CAMPUSES.

THE COUNSELORS, THE SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE REALLY GOOD ABOUT SAYING, I'M GOING TO HELP THE KID AT THIS POINT, BUT THEN I'M SEEING THEY NEED A LITTLE BIT MORE.

SO I'M GOING TO REACH OUT TO THE RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELOR AND THIS WAS AN INITIAL INTENT BECAUSE AS YOU ALL KNOW, WE WANT OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS TO SPEND 80 PERCENT OF THEIR TIME IN FRONT OF STUDENTS, RIGHT, HELPING THEM DIRECTLY AND WE WANT THEM TO BE ABLE TO MEET THE KIND OF ORDINARY NEEDS OF STUDENTS THAT COME EVERY DAY.

BUT THEN THEY CAN REACH OUT TO RESPONSIVE SERVICES COUNSELOR AND SAY, HEY, NOW WE'RE REALIZING THIS KID REALLY HAS A LOT OF ANXIETY.

CAN YOU MEET WITH THEM REGULARLY FOR FIVE SESSIONS? WE'RE ALSO CONDUCTING ALL THE COUNSELING AND RELATED SERVICE FOR SPECIAL ED FOR THE SECONDARY STUDENTS AND SO SOME OF OUR REFERRALS AND FINALLY ON SOME CAMPUSES, PRINCIPALS

[01:10:03]

WILL SIMPLY WE HAVE A REFERRAL FORM FOR EACH CAMPUS.

SOMETIMES THEY'LL FILL OUT THE REFERRAL FORM, SOMETIMES THEY DON'T, AND SOMETIMES THEY EMAIL THE PERSON.

WE PREFER THAT THEY FILL OUT THE FORM BECAUSE THAT ALLOWS US TO TRACK MORE EASILY AND JUST THIS YEAR, WE STARTED TRACKING EVERYTHING IN SKYWARD.

SO NOW I DIDN'T GIVE THE NUMBERS FOR THIS BECAUSE THE ONES THAT I WAS SPEAKING OF EARLIER, THAT [INAUDIBLE] NUMBER IS SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO SUICIDE PREVENTION.

WE'VE MET WITH COUNTLESS OTHER STUDENTS ABOUT VARIOUS OTHER TOPICS, AND I COULD GIVE YOU THOSE NUMBERS. THEY'RE NOT REALLY GREAT YET BECAUSE WE'RE FINALLY PUT THEM IN SKYWARD, SO WE HOPE TO HAVE REALLY GOOD DATA MOVING FORWARD.

BUT WE HAVE TO ALWAYS BE CAREFUL ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY.

WE DON'T WANT TO HAVE A SITUATION WHERE WE'RE GIVING EVERY DETAIL IN SOMETHING.

SO WE IT'S BASICALLY ARE WE SEEING A RESPONSE TO SERVICES COUNSELOR? WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW, OH, THEY'RE HAVING GENDER IDENTITY ISSUES OR THEY'RE FULL OF ANXIETY OR THEY'RE SELF-HARMING.

WE DON'T REALLY WANT THAT TO BE TRACKED IN A WAY THAT THE SECRETARY OVER HERE, EVERYBODY CAN SEE THIS STUFF, RIGHT.

SO WE'RE TRACKING HOW MANY WE SEE, BUT WE'RE NOT GIVING REAL SPECIFIC INFORMATION.

IT'S KIND OF A SWEET SPOT LIKE SHELLY WAS TALKING ABOUT A MINUTE AGO.

OK, I DID HAVE ONE MORE.

[CHUCKLING] OK.

IT'S JUST INTERESTING.

WE HAVEN'T REALLY DOVE INTO IT MUCH, AT LEAST IN MY TIME ON THE BOARD.

SO I'M ALSO INTERESTED BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN TO ALL KINDS OF TRAINING AND HEARD GREAT PEOPLE TALK ABOUT GREAT, DIFFERENT TOPICS.

YOU KNOW, WE NEVER REALLY KNOW EVERYTHING THAT A KID HAS GONE THROUGH BEFORE THEY GET TO OUR DOOR AND A LOT OF IT COULD BE ABUSE OR DIFFERENT THINGS.

THEN WE HAVE KIDS THAT SEEM TO ACT OUT IN CLASS AND THEN WE FIND OUT THAT THEY HAVE SOME ISSUES OR EMBARRASSED ABOUT SOMETHING.

THERE'S SOMETHING THAT MAKES THEM NOT WANT TO BE IN THE CLASS THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING ABLE TO LEARN.

SO ALWAYS INTERESTED IN LOOKING AT THE ACADEMIC PROFILE OF THOSE KIND OF KIDS.

I'M ALSO INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC ARE BULLIED AND OUR BULLIES.

IS THERE AN ACADEMIC PROFILE ON THEM OR ARE THEY TYPICALLY HIGH PERFORM OR LOW PERFORMER OR DOES IT EVEN TRACK THAT WAY? WELL, YOU COULD, BECAUSE ACTUALLY THOSE I BELIEVE ARE PUT IN TO REVIEW 360 BY ADMINISTRATORS, GENERALLY SPEAKING, BECAUSE THAT HAS TO DO WITH OUR DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS, RIGHT? AND THERE'S A FOLLOW THROUGH THAT MUST BE CONDUCTED, PER DAVID'S LAW.

THEY ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THROUGH THAT INVESTIGATION AND THAT'S TRACKED IN REVIEW 360 AND SO THOSE HAVE STUDENT I.D.

NUMBERS. SO I WOULD IMAGINE THAT WE COULD, IN FACT, I WOULD IMAGINE, WRITE A REPORT RIGHT TO SAY WHO ARE THE KIDS THAT WERE LISTED AS BEING BULLIED OR INVOLVED WITH THIS SORT OF THING? WE'VE BEEN USING THAT SYSTEM FOR QUITE A LONG TIME, AND IT DOES TRACK STUDENT IDS, WHICH IN TURN WOULD GIVE US SOME OF THOSE DEMOGRAPHICS JUST I'M JUST CURIOUS.

I MEAN, IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR CLUES, IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO COMBAT IT, ESPECIALLY STOP IT BEFORE IT HAPPENS.

I JUST THINK WE NEED TO KIND OF DIVE AND START, I MEAN, PROFILING IS A BAD THING MOST OF THE TIME AND IN THE WORLD.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO HELP STUDENTS, SOMETIMES A PROFILE CAN BE REVEALING. SO I JUST BRING THAT UP AS A THOUGHT I'D HAD WITH REGARD TO ALL OF THIS AND THEN, WELL, I'LL TALK TO YOU LATER ON.

I REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE YOU ALL'S BRINGING UP THE BULLYING BECAUSE IT IS A MAJOR ISSUE. IT IS.

I MEAN, IT IS, I MEAN, IT JUST IS, AND IT'S ALL OVER THE WORLD.

BUT WE IN GARLAND ISD, WE NEED TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO HELP WITH THOSE KIDS.

I'LL THANK YOU ALL FOR BRINGING THAT UP.

WHAT DO WE DO ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO TRACK THAT? DO WE HAVE A WAY WE CAN VIEW SOCIAL MEDIA OR DO WE HAVE TO BE MADE AWARE OF IT BY A PARENT? BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF SITES THAT KIDS GO ON, YOU KNOW, TIKTOK AND TWITTER AND ALL THIS DIFFERENT THING, PROBABLY NOT AS MUCH FACEBOOK AS I UNDERSTAND, BUT SOME OF THE OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA FACEBOOK IS FAMILYBOOK.

THAT'S FOR GRANDMAS AND GRANDPAS.

[CHUCKLING] YEAH, BUT WE DO MONITOR SOCIAL MEDIA.

WE GET A LOT OF SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS FROM ANONYMOUS ALERTS, BUT WE ALSO HAVE CONTENT KEEPER THAT'S CONSTANTLY PERUSING IT AND I WANTED TO SAY, IF YOU WANT TO LOOK AT A THOUSAND DATA POINTS AND META ANALYSIS ON WHO'S A BULLY, MOMENTUS INSTITUTE [INAUDIBLE] INSTITUTE HAVE LOOKED AT ALL THAT AND THERE IS A I MEAN, I'M MAKING A HUGE GENERALIZATION, THE KID WHO'S THE BULLY DIDN'T COME FROM A MIDDLE INCOME HOME AND HE'S GOT A B PLUS AVERAGE.

IT'S NOTHING LIKE THAT.

JUST LIKE IT'S NOT JUST THE WHITE MALE WHO'S GOING TO BE THE ACTIVE SHOOTER IN YOUR SCHOOL. IT IS WHAT SHE SAID HURT PEOPLE, HURT PEOPLE AND SO THAT'S WHAT THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON IS THAT AT HOME, PERHAPS AN OLDER BROTHER OR OLDER NEIGHBOR OR DAD SCREAMING AND YELLING AND BULLYING THEM AND SO THEY'RE GOING TO COME TO SCHOOL AND WHAT DALE CARNEGIE SAID, KICK THE CAT, YOU KNOW, FIND SOMEBODY SMALLER THAN THEM THAT THEY CAN BULLY AROUND WITH. SO BUT THEY ARE HURT ALSO AND SHE'S CORRECT, WE'VE GOT TO HELP THEM JUST AS MUCH.

THANKS.

[01:15:01]

AND JUST ONE MORE THING.

IT'S LIKE WHEN YOU TELL YOUR KID, HEY, I'M GOING TO FIND OUT WHEN YOU DO SOMETHING WRONG AND YOU'RE NOT GOING TO FIND OUT BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO HIDE IT REALLY WELL, RIGHT? AND YOU THINK YOU'VE DISCOVERED HOW TO FIX IT, THEY'RE GOING TO FIGURE OUT ANOTHER WAY, RIGHT? WE'RE NOT GOING TO SEE IT ALL.

SO I THINK IT'S AT THE CORE WE HAVE TO TEACH PEOPLE TO LOVE PEOPLE AND ACCEPT THEM.

THAT'S IT. I KNOW IT SOUNDS SIMPLE AND MAYBE KIND OF CORNY, BUT TRULY, IF WE CAN LITERALLY JUST SAY, WHEN YOU LOOK AT ANOTHER PERSON, CAN WE JUST LOVE THEM AND ACCEPT THEM? WE DON'T HAVE TO AGREE, BUT AND IT'S SO SIMPLE AND WE HEAR PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IT, BUT IT'S TRULY WHAT IT IS.

SO JUST HELP. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON AND OUR TEAM.

WE'RE WORKING ON HELPING PEOPLE AND WHEN WE HAVE SLIDE PRESENTATIONS ON ANY TOPIC, WE PUT PEOPLE OF VARIOUS DEMOGRAPHICS, EVERY KIND OF IMAGINABLE PERSON, BIG, SMALL, WHATEVER AND WE DO THAT INTENTIONALLY BECAUSE WE WANT PEOPLE TO SEE PEOPLE AND KNOW THAT WE'RE ALL PART OF A COMMUNITY AND WE CAN ALL ACCEPT EACH OTHER.

THAT'S OUR GOAL. LET'S GIVE OUR SECURITY AND COUNSELING TEAM A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE.

[APPLAUSE] THESE ARE THE SCENES BEHIND THE SCENES, RIGHT?

[VI. Closing Comments by Dr. Lopez]

YOU KNOW, WE ALWAYS SEE THE FIRST RESPONDERS, WE GET THOSE ALERTS.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID FOR SAFETY MEASURES, THE HIGHEST PRIORITY ALERTS, NOT THE EVERYDAY STUFF, BUT THE THINGS THAT WHEN WE HAVE TO CALL AN AMBULANCE, THERE'S AN ACCIDENT. POLICE ARE INVOLVED OR KIDS HAVE TO BE EVACUATED.

THOSE ARE CONSIDERED THE HIGHEST PRIORITY ALERTS AND THE BOARD IS ALL NOTIFIED ABOUT THOSE. SO, YOU KNOW, MARK COIN DOES A BIG JOB.

WE'VE GOT A BIG DISTRICT. SEVENTY TWO SCHOOLS, SOMETHING'S ALWAYS GOING ON, RIGHT? FIRE ALARM, THEN IT COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE, RIGHT? AND THE REASON WHY WE DID THAT FOR THE BOARD IS THREEFOLD.

ONE IS THAT WE WANTED YOU TO KNOW WHENEVER A RESPONSE TEAM IS CALLED, YOU MIGHT GET A CALL ON IT BECAUSE PEOPLE SEE THE AMBULANCES, PEOPLE SEE THE FIRE TRUCKS, THEY SEE A RESPONSE TEAM AND THE FIRST THING THEY'RE GOING TO CALL YOU: WHAT HAPPENED, RIGHT? WE WANT YOU TO BE INFORMED.

SECONDLY, WE WANT TO SHOW YOU THE AMOUNT OF WORK THAT IS CONSTANTLY HAPPENING ON CAMPUSES. PEOPLE HAVE AILMENTS.

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE GET A TEXT ON AN AILMENT OR, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE ACCIDENTS AND SO IT GIVES YOU A TASTE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING IN SCHOOL EACH AND EVERY DAY.

WE WANT TO FOCUS ON LEARNING, BUT SAFETY AND SECURITY IS IS PARAMOUNT AND THEN LAST BUT NOT LEAST, YOU GET TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT THE THREE CITIES INVEST IN OUR SCHOOLS.

THEY REALLY, REALLY CARE.

THE RESPONSE TIME IS HUGE AND TODAY WE GOT UNDER, WE'VE GOT TO GO UNDERCOVER A LITTLE BIT. THEY HANDED OUT SOME DOVE CHOCOLATES AND THE THING ABOUT DOVE CHOCOLATES THAT MAYBE SOME PEOPLE DON'T KNOW--IT'S A GREAT CHOCOLATE--THEY USUALLY HAVE POSITIVE MESSAGES, OK? I SAY USUALLY BECAUSE THE DAY I SAY ALWAYS IS, THEN SOMEBODY'S GOING TO TEXT ME, "LOOK, I HAD A BLANK ONE." [CHUKCLING] SO WE'RE GOING TO LEAVE WITH THESE THOUGHTS, RIGHT? THIS ONE SAYS KEEP LIFE MOVING FORWARD.

LOOKING BACKWARD IS ONLY FOR TIME TRAVELERS, RIGHT? WE CAN'T FIX THE PAST, BUT WE CAN CERTAINLY FIX THE FUTURE AND IT SAYS EVERYONE HAS AN HAPPY ENDING. IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY, IT'S NOT THE END.

WELL, THAT KIND OF SCARES ME BECAUSE IF I HAVE A GOOD DAY, I'LL BE LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER, RIGHT? [LAUGHTER] SO I'M NEVER GOING TO SAY I'M HAPPY AND SAY I'M ALMOST THERE, YOU KNOW? AND THEN FINALLY, THIS IS THE GISD EFFECT.

THIS IS WHAT GARLAND'S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT.

"YOUR VIBE ATTRACTS YOUR TRIBE." SO LET'S KEEP THE VIBE POSITIVE.

YOU ALL THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING AND THANK YOU, SECURITY TEAM.

APPRECIATE IT. [APPLAUSE] OK, I'M ASSUMING THAT CONCLUDES THE CLOSING COMMENTS.

ANY OTHER LAST QUESTIONS? THANK YOU TO STAFF.

THE FINAL ITEM I HAVE IS EXECUTIVE SESSION.

I'M NOT AWARE OF A NEED FOR THAT.

SO AT 12:55 PM, WE WILL ADJOURN.

THANK YOU.
