[IV.B. Receive Intruder Detection Audit Report ]
QUINN. GOOD AFTERNOON, DOCTOR LOPEZ, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.THE TOP PRIORITY OF GARLAND ISD IN THE STATE OF TEXAS IS KEEPING STUDENTS AND STAFF SAFE EVERY DAY.
THE AUDITS TEST WHETHER A CAMPUS IS ACCESSIBLE TO AN UNAUTHORIZED INDIVIDUAL.
WE ARE WORKING CLOSELY WITH OUR DISTRICT SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE TRAINING ALL OUR STAFF AND SECURING OUR DOORS FOR THE PROTECTION OF EVERYONE AT OUR CAMPUSES. THE SUPPORT FROM THE STATE IN CONDUCTING THE INTRUDER DETECTION AUDITS IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY ACTIONS WE ARE TAKING TO ENSURE OUR SCHOOLS ARE SAFE.
WE KNOW THAT THIS WORK DOES NOT END AND WE APPRECIATE THE BOARD'S SUPPORT.
HOWEVER, IT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE STUDENTS THAT WE DO NOT SHARE THIS INFORMATION TO THE BROADER PUBLIC AS IT COULD LEAD TO COMPROMISING IMPORTANT CAMPUS SECURITY INFORMATION. SPECIFIC DETAILS OF THE INTRUDER DETECTION AUDIT WILL BE DISCUSSED IN EXECUTIVE SESSION AND WITH THE SAFETY AND SECURITY COMMITTEE.
ITEM C, INTRODUCTION OF DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR.
[IV.C. Introduction of District Administration]
MR. ATTICUS WISENER.YES, MA'AM. PRESIDENT GRIFFIN, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DOCTOR LOPEZ.
GOOD EVENING. AND IT IS MY PLEASURE THIS EVENING, I'M HERE ON BEHALF OF THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT AND DOCTOR BROWN, IT'S MY SINCERE PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE MR. ARTURO VALENZUELA, GISD'S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE.
[APPLAUSE] COME ON UP. OH, CONGRATULATIONS.
SO LET ME JUST READ A LITTLE SNIPPET FROM MISTER VALENZUELA'S BIOGRAPHY.
IN MIDLAND ISD, THE TEAM UNDER HIS DIRECTION WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN FINANCIAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS FROM ASBO GFOA AS WELL AS TRANSPARENCY STARS FROM THE TEXAS STATE COMPTROLLER'S OFFICE.
ARTURO WORKED IN THE OIL FIELDS IN WEST TEXAS TO PAY FOR COLLEGE, AND HE IS THANKFUL FOR THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES THIS COUNTRY, STATE AND DISTRICT HAVE GIVEN HIM, AND HE PRAYS TO SERVE GARLAND TO THE VERY BEST OF HIS ABILITIES.
HE BRINGS HIS WIFE LILIANA, AND HIS KIDS, MATHIAS AND ANNA, TO GARLAND, A PLACE THEY NOW CALL HOME.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MISTER ARTURO VALENZUELA.
GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GRIFFIN, BOARD MEMBERS AND DOCTOR LOPEZ.
IT'S A PLEASURE. AND IT'S AN HONOR TO JOIN THE TEAM.
AND YOUR OPPORTUNITY WILL NOT BE WASTED ON ME, SO THANK YOU.
WELCOME. THANKS FOR BEING ON BOARD.
[APPLAUSE] WE ARE NOW AT ITEM FIVE DISCUSSION ITEMS, TRUSTEES REPORT.
[V.A. Trustees' Report]
WE'RE GOING TO START TO MY RIGHT, MR. GLICK. THANK YOU, MS. GRIFFIN. AS I HAD INDICATED, I WAS ON THE COMMITTEE THIS YEAR AT THE ROWLETT CHAMBER TO PICK A NEW PRESIDENT.[00:25:01]
AND SOME OF US WERE AT THE THE RECENT CHAMBER LUNCHEON WHERE SHARON MAYER WAS ANNOUNCED.YES. SHE IS THE WIFE OF PAUL MAYER, WHO HELD THE GARLAND CHAMBER.
WE HAD AROUND 60 CANDIDATES FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
IT WAS A DIFFICULT DECISION, BUT SHARON'S I THINK 26 PLUS YEARS RUNNING THE ALLEN NOW, ALLEN FAIRVIEW CHAMBER REALLY IS ONE OF THE GREAT SELLING POINTS.
AND I THINK SHE'LL MAKE A GREAT NEW PRESIDENT.
AS ROWLETT HAS A CHANGE OF ADMINISTRATION AND MANY NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS.
SO I THINK IT'S A GREAT TIME FOR HER TO COME ON BOARD.
AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH HER AS AMONG ON THE CHAMBER BOARD.
BUT I ALSO TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT I THINK THE LEADERS OF THE ROWLETT BUSINESS COMMUNITY NEED TO BE AWARE OF AND ONE OF THE THINGS I DO TALK ABOUT IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE LACK OF FUNDING THAT WE DID NOT GET FROM THE LAST LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
BE AWARE THAT LAST MONTH, THE UNITED STATES SET A RECORD FOR THE MOST AMOUNT OF BARRELS PER OIL 13.4 MILLION BARRELS PER DAY OIL PRODUCED IN THE UNITED STATES.
NO COUNTRY HAS EVER PRODUCED MORE.
THE AMOUNT OF MONEY COMING INTO THE TREASURY IN THE STATE OF TEXAS IS ENORMOUS.
THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE MOVING HERE AND THE AMOUNT OF SALES TAX REVENUE IS ENORMOUS.
AND WE DID NOT GET ALMOST A DOLLAR.
I ALWAYS MAKE BETS WITH MYSELF I WOULD OUR BASIC ALLOTMENT WAS 6160, SET IN 2019.
WE ALL KNOW ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF INFLATION WE'VE HAD SINCE THEN AND WAS NOT RAISED A PENNY.
SHOCKING TO ME, I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT.
WE ALL THOUGHT SOMEWHERE BETWEEN $600 AND $1000 PER STUDENT.
YOU CAN IMAGINE YOU CAN ADD UP THOSE NUMBERS.
SO THAT'S WHAT'S GOING ON THERE.
LAST MONTH WE HAD BOARD APPRECIATION MONTH.
AS YOU PROBABLY SAW, SOME OF THE POSTERS ARE STILL UP.
I THINK WE ALL ENJOY READING THEM.
I JUST WANT TO READ A COUPLE THAT I GOT.
I THINK WHAT HAPPENS IS THE KIDS ARE ASKED TO LOOK AT OUR BIOGRAPHIES ONLINE.
SO THIS IS FROM ONE YOUNG MAN.
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE FOR THE GARLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT.
HAPPY. WE ALSO GOT SOMETHING IN COMMON.
A NICE LITTLE PICTURE OF A BIRD THERE.
TO MR. GLICK, THANK YOU FOR SAVING TREES.
I WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR PLANTING SAVING TREES.
THANK YOU FOR WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY AND HISTORY.
ONE OF THE THINGS I ALSO LIKE THAT THEY DID SOME POSTERS AND ON THIS PARTICULAR POSTER IT HAS I LOVE JAZZ, SO IT HAS A SAXOPHONE AND A TRUMPET AS A MAP OF AFRICA HAS TREES.
IT HAS AROUND THE WORLD IN 20 DAYS, A REPORT I WROTE.
MORE SAXOPHONES, MORE BIRDS, MORE TREES, MORE BOOKS.
I TALKED TO THE BOARD ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN ON APRIL 8TH.
IT SEEMED LIKE A REALLY LONG TIME AGO WHEN I TALKED TO THE BOARD, BUT I CAN'T SEE YOU.
BUT THANK YOU TO DOCTOR ADAMS AND DOCTOR LOPEZ.
[00:30:06]
AND SOME PEOPLE SAID 20 YEARS, 40 YEARS.THE NEXT ECLIPSE HERE WILL BE 2317.
NOW, SOME OF YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING TO BE ALIVE IN 2317.
I THINK MOST OF US REALIZE WE WON'T BE HERE IN 2317.
WHAT WAS IT WILL BE A MAGNIFICENT SPECTACLE.
THERE ARE ARTICLES COMING OUT EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I WAS AT THE PLANETARIUM LAST WEEK MEETING WITH DOCTOR CHARLIE RUIZ, WHO RUNS OUR PLANETARIUM.
MELISSA LUNA, WHO'S OUR K THROUGH FIVE STEM COORDINATOR.
I'VE SPOKEN TO A COUPLE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPALS.
THEIR SCIENCE TEACHERS ARE PLANNING ACTIVITIES.
THIS IS GOING TO BE AN AMAZING EVENT.
THEY PROJECTED THAT OVER A MILLION VISITORS WILL COME TO THE STATE OF TEXAS, MAYBE EVEN HIGHER.
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE EVENTS THAT I WAS VERY LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO VISIT MY DAUGHTER IN 2017 IN SALEM, OREGON WHERE THE LAST ECLIPSE OCCURRED.
THIS IS GOING TO BE FOUR MINUTES.
SO WE'RE ALL PLANNED THEIR ACTIVITIES FOR THE FULL DAY FOR THE KIDS FOLLOWING THE TEKS.
SO AGAIN, ONE OTHER THING THAT I LEARNED VISITING THE PLANETARIUM THIS YEAR.
THAT'S THIS PLANETARIUM HAS BEEN AROUND.
THERE WAS A HIATUS, I THINK, OF 5 OR 6 YEARS.
PLANETARIUM HAS BEEN AROUND IN GISD FOREVER.
I KNOW MY KIDS WENT TO THE PLANETARIUM.
THIS YEAR WE'RE GOING TO HOST OVER 11,000 KIDS AT THE PLANETARIUM FROM OVER 50 SCHOOLS.
RECORD THAT'S NEVER BEEN SET BEFORE.
AS YOU KNOW, FIVE COUNTRIES HAVE NOW BEEN TO THE MOON THIS LAST 12 MONTHS INDIA AND JAPAN HAVE GONE TO THE MOON. I'VE GOTTEN NOTES FROM FRIENDS IN BOTH COUNTRIES HOW THRILLED THEY ARE AND EXCITED.
WE JUST LANDED ANOTHER EXPLORER ON THE MOON, AND WE'RE PREPARING TO GO TO MARS.
THANK YOU, MISS GRIFFIN. MR. JOHNSON. YES.
THANK YOU. I'LL REITERATE WHAT TRUSTEE GLICK SAID ABOUT SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION.
I KNOW THAT WE WENT THROUGH ALL OF IT.
ME AND MY KIDS DID, AND THEY GET A BIG KICK OUT OF IT, TOO.
SOME OF THE DESCRIPTIONS THAT YOU GET ON THE DRAWINGS ARE PRETTY, PRETTY CREATIVE AND INVENTIVE.
SO YOU LEARN STUFF ABOUT YOURSELF.
[LAUGHTER] BUT ANYWAY, IT WAS GREAT.
I ALWAYS LOVED GOING THROUGH THAT, AND THAT'S A HIGHLIGHT EVERY YEAR.
I WAS VERY PLEASED TO JOIN SOME OTHER TRUSTEES AT THE SACHSE STATE OF THE CITY DINNER THAT WAS HELD AT AT NORTH PLACE CHURCH. MAYOR BICKERSTAFF WAS KIND OF THE MASTER OF CEREMONIES OF THAT, AND HE GAVE AN ADDRESS THAT REALLY HIGHLIGHTED ALL THE THINGS GOING ON IN SACHSE AND WITHOUT QUESTION, RIGHT NOW, SACHSE HAS A BIG, BIG GROWTH SPURT THAT THEY'RE UNDERWITH, ESPECIALLY IN THEIR RETAIL AND COMMERCIAL SECTORS.
BUT THERE'S BIG THINGS GOING ON SACHSE.
AND I ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO GO AHEAD AND LOOK UP THERE AND SEE WHAT MAYOR BICKERSTAFF AND THE TEAM AND THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TEAM UP THERE HAVE MANAGED TO DO BECAUSE IT'S QUITE A BIT. I WAS ALSO MY PLEASURE TO GO TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SOLO AND ENSEMBLE COMPETITIONS.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO EVERY YEAR IS TO GO SEE THE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS.
YOU GO TO THE HIGH SCHOOL SOLO ENSEMBLE COMPETITION AND IT SOUNDS SO REFINE.
THE MIDDLE SCHOOL MAN, YOU GET A RANGE ON THAT ONE, RIGHT? BUT IT'S A LOT OF FUN.
THE KIDS, SOMETIMES IT'S THEIR FIRST THING TO EVER DO IN FRONT OF A JUDGE, AND YOU CAN SEE THEIR KNEES ARE KNOCKING AND SUCH, BUT YOU GIVE THEM SOME ENCOURAGEMENT AND TELL THEM IT'S GOING TO BE OKAY. THE ECLIPSE IS STILL GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN THEY GET OUT OF THERE ANYWAY, RIGHT? SO AND THE KIDS ALWAYS COME OUT FEELING A LITTLE BIT BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES AND A LOT OF ONES.
AND I THINK THAT THAT'S GREAT.
I NOTE THAT THEY'VE ALSO HAD HIGH SCHOOL SOLO AND ENSEMBLE, AND WAS SPEAKING WITH MR. FIGARELLI BEHIND IT. IT LOOKS LIKE WE MIGHT HAVE A RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT ARE MAKING STATE SOLO THIS YEAR FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.
I THINK THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR THIS WEEK, MISS GRIFFIN.
I FIRST OF ALL, I'M GOING TO MAKE A COMMENT ONE TONIGHT ON ITEMS TWO, THREE, FOUR AND FIVE, MR. FIGARELLI CAME UP AND SPOKE ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE GOING ON IN GISD, AND I JUST WANT TO CONGRATULATE THOSE BECAUSE ONE OF THE STATEMENTS IS MADE ON PAGE
[00:35:04]
NINE IN OUR BOARD BOOKLET, RESOURCES TO ACHIEVE THEIR CRAFT TONIGHT.WHEN I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL, WE DIDN'T HAVE THESE.
WE DIDN'T HAVE THESE PROGRAMS LIKE THIS.
AND I JUST THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
I'M VERY HUMBLED OF WHAT THE TEACHERS AND THE STUDENTS AND THE CAMPUSES DID.
ALSO, I DID ATTEND THE STATE OF THE CITY OF SACHSE AND BEING A CITIZEN OF SACHSE ONE TIME MYSELF, WHEN THERE WAS ONLY 648 PEOPLE LIVING THERE AND SEEING WHAT IT IS TODAY AND SEEING THE GROWTH THAT IS HAPPENING THERE, IT WAS REALLY GOOD TO HEAR MR. BICKERSTAFF AND WHAT HE IS ACCOMPLISHING AS MAYOR OF THAT CITY.
AND ALSO, I DID ATTEND THE GARLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 92ND CHAMBER BANQUET.
AND THE REASON THAT I TALK ABOUT BANQUETS AND CHAMBER CITY THINGS OF THIS NATURE IS BECAUSE IT'S VERY IMPORTANT, I THINK, AS A TRUSTEE, THAT WE ARE IN THE COMMUNITY AND THAT WE ARE THERE GOING TO THESE CHAMBER MEETINGS AND CITY MEETINGS AND THAT TYPE OF THING TO SHOW THE UNITY THAT WE HAVE IN OUR COMMUNITIES OF ROWLETT, SACHSE, AND GARLAND.
SO I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT, AND I APPRECIATE GOING TO THIS PARTICULAR BANQUET.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. MR. MILLER. YOU CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD.
I JUST HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS TO ADD.
I THINK, AS ALWAYS JANUARY THE TRUSTEE APPRECIATION MONTH IS IS ALWAYS GREAT.
LARRY BROUGHT OUT MANY GREAT THINGS.
WE GET SO MANY CARDS ARE SO CUTE.
THE KIDS ARE SO SMART AND FUNNY AND TALENTED.
AND SO THANK YOU TO ALL THE DISTRICT AS THEY PARTICIPATED IN THAT.
NOW, THAT DOES NOT MEAN SINCE JANUARY, IS SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE APPRECIATION MONTH.
THE OTHER MONTHS ARE NOT SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE DEPRECIATION MONTH.
SO WE'LL JUST TRY TO KEEP IT AT THIS LEVEL THE REST OF THE YEAR.
I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND A REALLY COOL THING.
BACK 100 YEARS AGO, I WENT TO FREEMAN ELEMENTARY AND THEY HAD A WALK THROUGH FOR THE ALUMNI GROUP AS THAT SCHOOL IS SLATED TO BE TOTALLY REBUILT STATE OF THE ART HERE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.
AND THERE WAS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF EXCITEMENT FOR THAT.
THERE WAS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF MEMORIES, STORIES.
THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE AT THAT SCHOOL.
AND YOU KNOW, IT'S KIND OF FUNNY SOME OF THESE PEOPLE I MAY NOT HAVE SEEN FOR 55 YEARS OR SO BUT, YOU KNOW, AS SOON AS WE SAW EACH OTHER, WE KNEW WHO IT WAS.
BUT LET ME TELL YOU ONE THING THAT'S GOING ON.
THIS WEEK, AND IT ENDS TOMORROW MORNING AT 10:00, I'M SORRY TO SAY, BUT THE VISUAL AID VOLUNTEERS GROUP IS A GROUP THAT, IF YOU DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT, I'M GOING TO READ A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEM TODAY.
WELL, LET ME JUST READ YOU THEIR HISTORY.
VISUAL AID VOLUNTEERS BEGAN IN THE FALL OF 1960 WITH A PILOT PROJECT APPROVED BY THE GARLAND SCHOOL BOARD AND THE TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY. VOLUNTEERS INCLUDED PARENTS OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED CHILDREN, MOTIVATED CIVIC LEADERS, AND OTHERS WHO CAME TOGETHER TO FORM VISUAL AID VOLUNTEERS.
AS A RESULT OF THIS INITIATIVE, GISD BECAME THE FIRST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN TEXAS TO HAVE BLIND AND LOW VISION STUDENTS ATTEND PUBLIC SCHOOLS ALONGSIDE THEIR PEERS.
VAV INCORPORATED IN 1962 AS A NONPROFIT AND HIRED THE FIRST DIRECTOR, ANNA KING, SHORTLY THEREAFTER.
SINCE THAT TIME, VISUAL AID VOLUNTEERS HAS WORKED CONTINUOUSLY TO PROVIDE QUALITY BRAILLE PRODUCTS FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS OF ALL AGES, AND I BELIEVE NOW THEY EXPANDED TO INCLUDE NEARLY ALL OF REGION TEN.
[00:40:02]
SO THEY DO A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WORK, AND THEY'RE RIGHT THERE ON THE SQUARE IN DOWNTOWN GARLAND.I HAVE SEVERAL FRIENDS THAT HAVE BEEN ON THAT BOARD FOR A LONG TIME, BUT I HAVE HAD IN MY BANK AT VERITEX, I'VE HAD A PRETTY BIG DISPLAY OF THEIR ARTWORK FROM THE KIDS.
THEY'RE HAVING A BIG ART CONTEST.
I DON'T WANT ANY LAUGHS, BY THE WAY, BUT I'VE BEEN INVITED TO JUDGE THE ART CONTEST.
AND I KNOW EVERYBODY'S GOING, WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ART? WELL, I KNOW WHAT I LIKE, SO IT'LL BE FUN.
I WISH EVERYBODY HAD MORE TIME.
BUT AT 10:00 TOMORROW, THEY'RE TAKING IT DOWN.
SO IF YOU CAN GET TO THE BANK BETWEEN 8 AND 10, YOU CAN PROBABLY SEE THE ARTWORK BEFORE IT GOES BACK TO THE VISUAL AID VOLUNTEER BUILDING THERE ON STATE STREET. AND THEN THURSDAY NIGHT WE WILL HAVE THE JUDGING CONTEST, BUT I'M HONORED TO BE A PART OF THAT.
THANK YOU. I, TOO, APPRECIATE ALL THAT WE GET FOR TRUSTEE APPRECIATION.
IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO GO THROUGH IT ALL.
I'M NOT SURE. I'M NOT GOING TO SAY I'M THROUGH IT ALL YET, BUT I AM WORKING MY WAY THROUGH.
SO THANK YOU ALL FOR WHAT YOU GUYS GIVE US AND THAT.
SOME OF THE THINGS I'M JUST GOING TO DO, SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS I ATTENDED THE TASB GRASSROOTS FOR REGION TEN, AND I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET SELECTED TO BE ON THE LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COUNCIL, WHICH IS A HUGE THING FOR ME, BECAUSE THAT IS ONE OF MY PASSIONS, IS THAT I FEEL THAT IN ORDER TO MAKE CHANGE, YOU HAVE TO ADVOCATE FOR IT.
IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING THAT IS DONE ALL THE TIME.
SO I'M SUPER EXCITED AND LOOK FORWARD TO ALL THAT I GET TO DO WITH THAT.
I ATTENDED TWO LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS, ONE AT THE CALI SAIGON MALL WITH THE VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY AND THEN ONE WITH THE GREATER DALLAS TAIWANESE COMMUNITY.
AND I THINK THAT I ENJOY GOING TO THOSE THE MOST, BECAUSE I HAVE YET TO SEE A BETTER MIX OF CULTURES, THE WAY THAT THE VIETNAMESE AND THE TAIWANESE DO, WHERE THEY HONOR THEIR CULTURE AND THEY HONOR THEIR PAST AND THEY HONOR THEIR AMERICAN NEW LIVES AS WELL.
SO I THANK THEM FOR ALWAYS INCLUDING US.
AND THEN ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS I GOT TO DO WAS I GOT TO CHAPERON A PARTY BUS AT BACK ELEMENTARY FOR THE THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE WINNERS FOR THEIR ANNUAL FUNDRAISERS.
AND SO I THINK ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MISS MEDINA FOR THAT.
AND THEN I GOT TO ATTEND THE NORTH GARLAND LIBRARY DID A FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH, A REALLY GREAT PROGRAM, AND IT WAS GARLAND ISD MAKING STRIDES.
AND IT WAS REALLY I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY'S EVER SEEN IT.
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I'VE SEEN THE CD THAT WAS PUT OUT, AND IT JUST ABOUT ALL THE ORIGINAL ATTENDEES FROM THE ORIGINAL GARLAND SCHOOL THAT WAS FOR OUR BLACK COMMUNITIES BACK THEN.
I MEAN, IT'S JUST A GREAT PROGRAM.
AND THEN AFTERWARDS WE HAD TWO WE HAD A THREE PANEL BOARD.
TWO OF THEM WERE CARVER ATTENDEES.
ONE OF THEM IS A CURRENT TEACHER.
AND THEN OUR PRESIDENT, MISS GRIFFIN, SAT ON THE BOARD AS WELL.
AND THE ONLY OTHER THING I'M GOING TO PLUG IS I ATTENDED THE SAGE MEETING, WHICH IS THE PARENT SUPPORT GROUP FOR OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION. AND ANYBODY LISTENING, I JUST HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU COME OUT.
WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF US YET.
WE'RE STILL BUILDING, BUT IT'S A PLACE WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO FIND LIKE AND I DON'T WANT TO SAY LIKE MINDED BECAUSE IT'S NOT LIKE MINDED, BUT IT'S PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN THROUGH SOME OF THE SAME TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS THAT WE ALL ARE THROUGH WHEN WE HAVE NOT ONLY PHYSICALLY DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN, BUT THE MENTALLY DISADVANTAGED AND ALSO THE LEARNING DISADVANTAGE.
IT'S A HUGE UMBRELLA, BUT IT'S A PLACE WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO GO AND EVERYBODY IS GOING TO UNDERSTAND YOU AND NOBODY'S GOING TO JUDGE YOU, AND YOU'RE JUST YOU'RE GOING TO FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU'RE DONE.
SO I JUST WE MEET ONCE A MONTH.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANYBODY WHO IS STRUGGLING TO COME OUT AND SEE US AND THAT'S IT.
[00:45:06]
THANK YOU, MISS GRIFFIN. THANK YOU.MR. SELDERS. THANK YOU, MISS GRIFFIN.
AND I AM STILL GOING THROUGH MY YEAH, IT'S A LOT, BUT IT'S GOOD.
I REALLY ENJOY IT. AND FOR THOSE CAMPUSES THAT GAVE ME OR SHARED WITH ME SOME OF MY FAVORITES, BUTTERFINGERS AND MOUNTAIN DEW, YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.
AND THERE'S A STORY BEHIND THAT.
SO IF YOU EVER WANT TO KNOW IT, JUST COME ASK ME.
I'LL TELL YOU. BUT REALLY APPRECIATE THAT AND EVERYTHING THAT YOU GUYS DO.
LIKE MISS STANLEY SAID, I ALSO ATTENDED WITH HER AND MR. BEACH THE TASB GRASSROOTS MEETING.
AND MISS STANLEY WAS ACTUALLY BEING MODEST IN TERMS OF SAYING SHE GOT SELECTED.
SO I REALLY YEAH, THAT WAS AWESOME FOR HER AND REPRESENTING GARLAND ISD.
[LAUGHTER] I WASN'T GOING TO SAY THAT JOHNNY.
ALSO HAD A CHANCE TO ATTEND THE COUNCIL OF PTA'S FOUNDER'S DAY.
WANTED TO REALLY APPRECIATE MISS NICOLE SCOTT.
SHE PROVIDES GREAT LEADERSHIP FOR THAT ORGANIZATION, AND IT WAS REALLY GOOD TO KNOW AND LEARN ABOUT HOW PTA STARTED AND HOW IT STARTED IN TEXAS, AND HOW WE GOT TO WHERE WE ARE TODAY. AND I STUCK AROUND TO ATTEND A LIVE STREAMED EVENT FROM THE TEXAS PTA ON STRAIGHT TALK 24 NAVIGATING THE SMARTPHONE ERA.
AND THERE WAS IT WAS A LIVE STREAMED EVENT FROM THE STATE CAPITOL, AND THERE WERE OVER 500 TEXAS PARENTS, EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT ATTENDED THAT WHERE WE TALKED ABOUT OR THEY TALKED ABOUT THE IMPACT OF SMARTPHONES ON OUR STUDENTS MINDS, BODIES AND IN THE CLASSROOM. AND SO AFTERWARDS, THERE WAS A PANEL THAT WAS HELD HERE IN GARLAND ISD UPSTAIRS WITH SOME OF OUR ADMINISTRATORS AND SOME OF OUR STUDENTS.
THERE WERE CHANGE AGENTS, STUDENTS FROM NORTH GARLAND HIGH SCHOOL THAT WERE THERE THAT WERE REPRESENTED ON THAT PANEL, AND THEY TALKED ABOUT HOW CERTAIN POLICIES AND CERTAIN PRACTICES, IN TERMS OF REMOVING CELL PHONES FROM THE CLASSROOM HAVE IMPACTED INSTRUCTION.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE ROWLETT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND LIKE MR. BEACH TALKED ABOUT THE DALLAS GREATER TAIWANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, THEIR LUNAR NEW YEAR CHARITY GALA.
I WAS THERE WITH MISS STANLEY.
ABSOLUTELY. AND THEN DOCTOR ADAMS AND HIS WIFE.
AND MISS HOGAN. SO WE WERE THERE.
AND IT WAS REALLY COOL AND FASCINATING TO SEE HOW THEY DID IT.
AND IT JUST SHARED LOVE WITH EVERYBODY.
SO I WAS REALLY APPRECIATIVE THAT I WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT AND SEE THAT HAPPEN.
I WAS THERE WITH MISS GRIFFIN AND DOCTOR LOPEZ AND DOCTOR PERALES, AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING FOR ME AND THEY ASKED IF ANY OF THE TRUSTEES HAD COMMENTS, AND SO I DEFER TO MISS GRIFFIN.
AND YOU ALL KNOW HOW MISS GRIFFIN CAN GO.
GOT A STANDING OVATION, WHICH I'M SURE MANY OF YOU ARE NOT SURPRISED, BUT IT WAS REALLY AWESOME TO KIND OF SEE HOW SHE WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH THOSE STUDENTS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THAT DAY, AND IT WAS REALLY AWESOME TO WATCH AND SEE.
ALL RIGHT. WE HAVE THANK YOU, TRUSTEES, FOR ALL OF YOUR REPORTS AND YOUR VISIBILITY IN THE TRI CITIES OF GARLAND, ROWLETT AND SACHSE. I WILL NOT REPEAT EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN SAID, BUT I WILL.
I WOULD LIKE TO JUST GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO ALL OF OUR PRINCIPALS, OUR ADMINISTRATORS, OUR TEACHERS.
[00:50:01]
THIS IS THE BUSY TIME OF YEAR.IT STARTS WITH BOARD APPRECIATION AND IT CONTINUES UNTIL THE END OF MAY.
SO I WANT TO GIVE THEM A SHOUT OUT FOR KEEPING THEIR SCHOOLS MOTIVATED, FOR HAVING THEIR SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE IN ALL OF THE MILLION COMPETITIONS THAT ARE GOING ON THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT, AND KNOW THAT WE APPRECIATE ALL OF THE EXTRA EFFORTS THAT'S GOING INTO THE WORK THAT YOU'RE DOING ON YOUR CAMPUSES.
AND IT'S EVIDENT TONIGHT, BECAUSE OUR ABILITY TO WIN AWARDS AND PLACE IN ALL OF THIS COMPETITION.
AND SO I'D LIKE FOR THE BOARD TO GIVE OUR PRINCIPALS, STAFF, ADMINISTRATORS AND STUDENTS A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR HOW THEY CONTINUE TO REPRESENT GARLAND ISD VERY WELL.
[APPLAUSE] AND THE ONE EVENT THAT I'D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT IT IS ONE OF THE MOST RECENT COLLABORATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE CITY OF GARLAND, AS ALL OF US TRY TO BE INCLUSIVE, MEANING SCHOOL DISTRICTS, CITIES, GARLAND, ROWLETT AND SACHSE TO BE INCLUSIVE OF ALL OF OUR CULTURES AND ALL OF OUR TRADITIONS.
THE CITY OF GARLAND, ALONG WITH OUR FACE DEPARTMENT HAD A VERY SUCCESSFUL BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM.
THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH THEME THIS YEAR IS BLACK ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH THE ARTS, AND OUR LIAISONS FROM THE FACE DEPARTMENT AND STUDENT SERVICES CHOSE DANCE.
AND THE AUDITORIUM WAS PACKED.
THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE THERE.
AND THEY HAD SO MUCH FUN IN PARTICIPATING AND BASICALLY DANCING.
AND ALSO, I WANT TO THANK THE PARENTS BECAUSE THERE WERE A LOT OF PARENTS THERE.
SO WE CONTINUE TO DO THINGS THAT'S INCLUSIVE FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AS WELL AS OUR PARENTS.
AND WITH THAT, I WILL ASK DOCTOR LOPEZ FOR A SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.
[V.B. Superintendent's Report]
WELL, YOU KNOW, AS WE TURN TO THE NEW YEAR, IT ALWAYS EXCITING.NEW CHALLENGES, NEW THINGS COMING UP.
ONE OF THE THINGS I WANT EVERYBODY TO UNDERSTAND IS HOW ENGAGED OUR BOARD IS.
WE'RE NOT ONLY A TRI CITY AREA, BUT WE'RE A TRI CITY AREA WITH SO MUCH DIVERSITY THAT EVERYBODY IS CELEBRATING THEIR EXCELLENCE AND THE BOARD WHAT THEY DO IS THEY ENGAGE IN EVERY DIFFERENT FACET OF OUR CITY.
IT'S NO COINCIDENCE THAT THEY'RE AN HEB FINALIST, ONE OF FIVE IN THE ENTIRE STATE FOR BOARD OF THE YEAR, FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS.
YOU ALL DESERVE A HUGE ROUND OF APPLAUSE.
[APPLAUSE] YOU KNOW, THEY'RE CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN.
THEY HAVE AN IMPACT ON NOT ONLY THE GISD.
THE GISD EFFECT IS ABOUT IMPACT.
AND IT TRANSCENDS BEYOND WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
WE STARTED LOOKING BACK, AND THIS BOARD HAS DONE EXCELLENT THINGS FOR DECADES.
I'M BIASED. I'VE BEEN HERE SIX YEARS.
I THINK THIS IS THE BEST BOARD IN THE HISTORY OF GARLAND ISD.
BUT I WILL TELL YOU THIS JUST A LITTLE BIASED.
SO DON'T THINK I'M TRYING TO GET POINTS.
SO. [LAUGHTER] AND MY CONTRACT SO BUT I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT THIS.
WE'RE ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY OKAY.
SINCE 2000, THE BOARD HAS NOT GOTTEN ANY RECOGNITIONS AT THIS LEVEL AT ALL.
AND THINK OF ALL THE EXCELLENT WORK THAT HAS CONTINUALLY HAPPENED IN GISD.
AND IT'S ABOUT TIME THE RECOGNITION IS DUE.
SO WHAT I'M GOING TO ASK OUR COMMUNITY TO DO ON MARCH 8TH, THEY HAVE THE BIG INTERVIEW.
SEND A PRAYER THAT DAY, THAT EVERYTHING THAT'S GREAT ABOUT OUR CITY IS DELIVERED IN A MANNER WHERE THEY LEAVE HERE THINKING, MAN, THIS PLACE IS SPECIAL BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT GOING TO ONLY TALK ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE BOARD.
[00:55:03]
IT'S ALL ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT'S HAPPENING.AND IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE SHOWCASE THE EXCELLENCE FROM THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DOING THE EVERYDAY WORK IN THE CLASSROOMS TO PEOPLE THAT ARE VOLUNTEERING. I MEAN, THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE, AND I WILL TELL YOU THAT.
AND I'M AND I YES, I AM BIASED.
THERE'S IN MY OPINION, THERE'S ONLY ONE REAL WINNER AND IT'S THESE SEVEN PEOPLE UP HERE.
SO REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS, IN MY BOOK THEY'RE THE BEST BOARD IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
SO GOOD LUCK. THIS NOT THIS FRIDAY, BUT A WEEK FROM THIS FRIDAY.
THE OTHER THINGS I WANT TO RECOGNIZE IS, YOU KNOW, BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
AND I WANT TO TELL YOU SOMETHING.
BUT WHEN YOU GO THERE, YOU WOULD BE YOU WOULD BE BLOWN AWAY BY THE KIDS.
THEY GET IT WHEN THEY'RE CELEBRATING BLACK EXCELLENCE.
IT'S NOT JUST LIKE FOR A BLACK AUDIENCE.
IT'S NOT JUST BLACK PEOPLE DELIVERING IT FOR EVERYBODY ELSE.
IT REALLY IS MULTICULTURAL AND MULTI-DIMENSIONAL.
THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE CELEBRATING IT IN UNITY AND HAND IN HAND THAT WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR DISTRICT WITH OUR KIDS, YOU WOULD LEAVE AFTER SEEING THAT SAYING, WOW, THEY GET IT.
SO I WANT TO CONGRATULATE EVERYBODY AS WE CONCLUDE THE MONTH.
FINALLY, YOU KNOW I WANT TO CONGRATULATE ROBERT SELDERS, ROBERT SELDERS JUNIOR, AND WESLEY JOHNSON.
AND SO OUR BOARD IS STAYING IN UNISON AND IN STRONG HANDS.
NOW, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO THE COMMUNITY? THAT MEANS NOT ONLY DO YOU HAVE TWO GREAT BOARD MEMBERS, BUT WE JUST NOT HAVING AN ELECTION SAVED THE DISTRICT A QUARTER OF $1 MILLION DOLLARS.
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT THAT.
SO IT'S REALLY NEAT TO SEE THAT THERE'S CONFIDENCE IN THE PEOPLE THAT ARE UP HERE.
AND I WILL TELL YOU, THESE PEOPLE TAKE IT VERY SERIOUSLY.
[V.C. Future Agenda Items]
ARE THERE ANY FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS? YES. MRS. GRIFFIN. NOT NECESSARILY FOR THE BOARD, BUT FOR DISTRICT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE.I THINK THAT EVERYONE WOULD REALLY BE BLOWN AWAY BY THAT.
