[I. Call to Order and Determination of Quorum]
DETERMINE THAT A QUORUM IS PRESENT.MISS HOGAN, ARE THERE ANY PUBLIC FORUM ITEMS? THANK YOU. WE'RE GOING TO JUST JUMP RIGHT IN.
DR. LOPEZ, SUPERINTENDENTS' MESSAGE.
[IV. Superintendent's Message]
WELL, IN ADAK, I JUST WANT TO REMIND THE TRUSTEES THAT WE HAVE A BIG CELEBRATION COMING FOR BLUE RIBBON AND HERFURTH.YOU GOT YOUR SHIRTS, PLEASE? WEAR THEM WITH PRIDE.
TOMORROW MORNING, 8:30, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A NICE LITTLE KICK OFF ALLY, A PINNING CEREMONY.
THESE THINGS DO NOT HAPPEN VERY OFTEN.
WE'RE ONE OF, I THINK, 26 SCHOOLS SELECTED IN THE STATE AS BLUE RIBBON.
YOU GOT A BLUE-RIBBON SCHOOL FIRST? GISD BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL IN THE ROWLETT AREA.
AT THE END OF THIS MONTH OR NEXT TUESDAY.
FIVE A TO DISCUSS THE PUBLIC HEARING OF THE 2023 2024 ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REPORT.
[V.A. Discuss Public Hearing]
MR. JOYNER. GOOD EVENING.IT'S JUST PACKAGED A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY.
AND SO, I JUST WANTED TO KIND OF POINT THAT OUT, THAT ALL OF THIS INFORMATION YOU HAVE RECEIVED NUGGETS OF THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND WE'RE JUST KIND OF PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER FOR YOU.
SO, THE PURPOSE OF TONIGHT ISN'T SO MUCH ABOUT GOING THROUGH EACH INDIVIDUAL DATA POINT, MUCH RATHER TO SHOW YOU JUST THE COMPREHENSIVE REPORT. I'LL POINT OUT THE DIFFERENT PAGES THAT REFLECT THE DATA POINTS THAT ARE ON EACH SLIDE.
BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AND I'LL BE HAPPY TO ADDRESS THOSE.
SO, THE COMPONENTS OF THIS DISTRICT ANNUAL REPORT ARE RELATED TO THE DISTRICT ACCREDITATION STATUS, THE TAPER REPORT, WHICH IS THE BULK OF THE REPORT, WHICH IS THE TEXAS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE REPORT.
THE FINANCIAL STANDARDS REPORT CAMPUS PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES, THE REPORT ON VIOLENT AND CRIMINAL INCIDENTS AND THEN POST-SECONDARY PERFORMANCE AS WELL IN YOUR BOARD PACKET OF WHAT IS CONSUMING A LOT OF THE PAGES IS THAT TAPER GLOSSARY.
IN CASE YOU HAD ANY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT ANYTHING IN THAT TEXAS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE REPORT.
THE OTHER THING THAT YOU'LL NOTICE ON THIS SLIDE ARE THE DATES FOR WHICH THE DATA ARE PROVIDED.
SO, I DID CODE THOSE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT SO THAT THEY KIND OF STAND OUT SO THAT, YOU KNOW, WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT THAT FINANCIAL REPORT, IT'S REALLY FROM 2021-2022.
THAT POST-SECONDARY PERFORMANCE REPORT IS FROM THE CLASS OF 2021.
SO AGAIN, NOTHING IN TONIGHT'S PRESENTATION.
IS INFORMATION THAT YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY BEEN PRIVY TO.
SO, STARTING OUT WITH THE ACCREDITATIONS AND RATING SUMMARIES.
SO, ON THE SLIDE YOU'LL SEE OUR AMAZING FINANCIAL TEAM ALWAYS EARNS THAT A SUPERIOR RATING.
AND NOT ONLY IS IT AN A SUPERIOR RATING, BUT IT'S 100 OUT OF 100 ON THAT RATING.
AS YOU'LL RECALL, WE ACTUALLY HAVE NOT RECEIVED CAMPUS RATINGS OR A DISTRICT RATING FOR THE RESULTS OF 22-23 ON ACCOUNT OF THE LAWSUIT THAT'S IN PLAY.
SO THEREFORE, WE DON'T HAVE AN ACCOUNTABILITY RATING FOR OUR DISTRICT.
SO, IN YOUR PACKET, BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY DIVE INTO THE TEXAS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE REPORT, WHAT I HAVE FOR YOU HERE IS REALLY JUST A SUMMARY OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT DATA POINTS THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIND ON THAT REPORT.
[00:05:03]
SOME, SOME GAINS.SO THAT REPORT HAS STAR PERFORMANCE, ATTENDANCE, GRADUATIONS, COLLEGE CAREER, MILITARY READINESS, STUDENT INFORMATION, DEMOGRAPHICS, STAFF INFORMATION TEAMS, FINANCIAL STANDARDS REPORTS.
AND THEN AGAIN, THAT COMPREHENSIVE GLOSSARY.
SO, IN YOUR BOARD PACKET YOU'LL SEE THAT WE HAVE THE PAGE NUMBERS FOR THE BOARD PACKET, BUT WHAT YOU SEE ON THE SLIDE AT THE VERY TOP OF THAT HEADER IS THE PAGE NUMBERS FOR THE ACTUAL TAPER REPORT.
SO, PAGES 3-11 GO INTO THE STAR PERFORMANCE.
AND AS WE ALL KNOW WE HAVE THE THREE PERFORMANCE LEVEL RATES OF APPROACHES MEETS MASTERS.
AND THEN WE HAVE THAT INFORMATION REPORTED OUT BY ASSESSMENT CONTENT GRADE LEVEL SO ON AND SO FORTH.
SO ALSO, TO POINT OUT THAT THESE ARE THE RESULTS ONLY FOR THE STUDENTS THAT ARE PART OF THE ACCOUNTABILITY SUBSET, WHICH ARE OUR SNAPSHOT DATE, WHICH IS THE LAST FRIDAY OF OCTOBER.
SO, WHEN WE LOOK AT INFORMATION ON THAT TAPER REPORT, AND THEN WE TRY TO MAKE SOME COMPARISONS TO ANY REPORTS THAT ARE PRESENTATIONS THAT WE'VE DONE BASED ON STAR PERFORMANCE IN THE PAST.
THEN MOVING FORWARD, WE GO INTO THE DISTRICT.
PROGRESS IS REALLY THE WAY TO EXPLAIN GROWTH.
ARE OUR STUDENTS GROWING? SO THAT INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND ON PAGE 14.
SO, WE HAD AN EXTENSIVE CONVERSATION A FEW MONTHS AGO ABOUT WHAT THAT GROWTH LOOKS LIKE NOW WITH ACCOUNTABILITY AND WHY THE GROWTH JUST WASN'T THERE FOR OUR STUDENTS AS COMPARED TO PRIOR YEARS.
AND IRONICALLY, THE STATE DID NOT PUT UP THE RESULTS FOR 2022 GROWTH ON THAT REPORT, WHERE TYPICALLY THEY DO HAVE TWO YEARS' WORTH OF DATA FOR US.
THEN OTHER SUCCESS INDICATORS THAT ARE IN THE TAPER REPORT, PAGES 15 THROUGH 26.
AGAIN, AS MENTIONED EARLIER, ATTENDANCE, GRADUATION.
THERE'S JUST A LOT OF DATA POINTS FOR YOU TO LOOK OVER.
AND THEN ALSO HOW STUDENTS ARE DOING IN THAT COLLEGE DEVELOPMENTAL DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION COURSES.
THEN WE MOVE TO PAGES 27 AND TO 32.
IN THE DISTRICT PROFILE, YOU'LL SEE INFORMATION RELATED TO DEMOGRAPHICS FOR OUR STUDENTS, FOR OUR STAFF, AND THEN AS WELL AS INFORMATION RELATED TO STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND ALSO THE TEACHERS THAT ARE ASSIGNED TO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS. THEN COMING OUT OF ALL OF THE STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION, WE MOVE INTO THE FINANCIAL STANDARDS REPORT INFORMATION.
GO A LITTLE BIT DEEPER IF IF WE WERE TO HAVE PULLED THOSE AS WELL.
WE ALSO ARE REQUIRED TO BRING TO YOU THE CAMPUS PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES.
NOW, IF YOU'LL REMEMBER, IN THE FALL DR.
CADDELL PRESENTED ALL OF THOSE ALL OF THOSE CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLANS.
ALL OF THAT INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND ON OUR ON OUR DISTRICT WEBSITE.
SO, IN YOUR BOARD PACKET, WHAT YOU DO FIND IS THE DISTRICT IMPROVEMENT PLAN.
AND AGAIN, PRESENTED TO YOU IN THE FALL BY DR.
CADDELL. THEN WE MOVE INTO THE REPORT ON VIOLENT AND CRIMINAL INCIDENTS.
AND SO WHAT THIS REPORT HAS IS THE NUMBER, THE RATE AND THE TYPE OF VIOLENT OR CRIMINAL INCIDENTS, NOT ONLY FOR THE DISTRICT BUT AS WELL AS THE INDIVIDUAL CAMPUSES. AND LASTLY, WE GO INTO THE POST-SECONDARY PERFORMANCE.
I KNOW THAT DR. LOPEZ HAS TALKED A LOT ABOUT OUR GOALS AND HOW THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS FOR OUR STUDENTS TO BE READY FOR COLLEGE, CAREER, MILITARY AND LIFE.
SO, THIS REPORT SHOWS THE POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTION INFORMATION.
[00:10:07]
ENROLL IN TRADE SCHOOLS THAT ARE NOT ALREADY IDENTIFIED AS A COLLEGE OR INSTITUTION.SO LIKE TSTC, FOR EXAMPLE, THOSE STUDENTS ARE REFLECTED IN THESE REPORTS.
BUT IF A STUDENT WERE TO GO TO A MECHANIC SCHOOL A WELDING ACADEMY OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, THAT INFORMATION IS ALSO NOT TRACKED.
SO, ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COMPONENTS OF THE REPORT? THANK YOU FOR THAT PRESENTATION, MR. JOYNER. OF COURSE.
TRUSTEES. ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS, MR. GLICK? THANK YOU. I'M NOT SURE WHO CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTION, BUT HAS THERE EVER BEEN ANY RESOLUTION OF THE ACTIONS, THE LEGAL ACTIONS BROUGHT AGAINST THE COMMISSIONER ABOUT THE NON-RELEASE OF LAST YEAR'S STATISTICS? NO, SIR. WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED WORD ON THE STANDINGS OF THAT LAWSUIT.
MISS RAY, WOULD YOU MAYBE BE ABLE TO CHECK ON THE STATUS OF THOSE ACTIONS IF THEY'VE EVER COME TO FRUITION? ABSOLUTELY. THANK YOU.
WHAT I WILL SAY MR. GLICK IS THAT WE HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED THE PRELIMINARY ACCOUNTABILITY MANUAL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY 2024, AND THERE ARE SOME SUPER SMALL LIKE TINY MINOR CHANGES THAT REALLY DON'T CHANGE METHODOLOGY.
SO, THEY'RE STILL MOVING FORWARD WITH THE WAY THAT, THAT THEY'VE ALWAYS DONE IT.
I DID HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PUBLIC HEARING FOR THAT MANUAL AND PROVIDED SOME COMMENTS RELATED TO THE IMPACT ON SCHOOLS, JUST LIKE OUR DISTRICTS LIKE GARLAND ISD.
I GUESS I MISUNDERSTOOD YOUR QUESTION.
NOT GIVING US AMPLE TIME, NOT GIVING US SAMPLE PREPARATION.
AND IT SURE DIDN'T SHOW, IN THEIR OPINION, ANY TYPE OF DRASTIC IMPROVEMENT.
OR. HURTING ANY DISTRICT IN ANY WAY.
SO WE KNOW THIS IS FOR THIS YEAR ONLY.
SO NOW WE'RE ROLLING INTO NEXT YEAR.
SO NO MATTER WHAT THE RATINGS ARE THEY'RE DONE.
WE SAW AN AGENCY IN DALLAS ABOUT A MONTH AGO, WENT AHEAD AND PRODUCED A FULL RESULTS, TRYING TO ALIGN WHAT THEY WERE DOING IN TI AND GIVING PREDICTIONS FOR EVERY SCHOOL.
THEIR CALCULATIONS WERE OFF AND IT CAUSED A LOT OF CONFUSION RATHER THAN CLARITY.
AND YOU COULD SEE THAT THAT THEY BACKED OFF FROM THAT AS WELL.
SO, WHAT WE ANTICIPATE IS WHEN THESE RESULTS COME OUT, THESE WILL BE THE.
THE BASELINE FOR NEXT YEAR'S RESULTS.
AND SO, I'M TRUSTING THAT OUR GROWTH MEASURES WILL BE BASED ON LAST YEAR'S RESULTS, NOT ERASING LAST YEAR AND THEN MAKING US START FROM A. A NEW BASELINE ALL OVER AGAIN.
WHERE'S YOUR CONFIDENCE THAT THAT'S GOING TO BE TRUE? I DON'T.
THEY'RE USING THE SAME METHODOLOGIES.
SO, WE'LL STILL USE THE YEAR BEFORE TEST AND DO THAT BASELINE.
SO, I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT'S NEGOTIATING WISE, HOW THAT'S GOING TO PLAY OUT.
IS THAT STILL A POSSIBILITY? YEAH, THAT'S STILL A POSSIBILITY.
THEY COULD DO THAT. BUT THEN THEY'RE GOING TO PUT SANCTIONS ON SCHOOLS.
THEN THE NEW RESULTS COME IN AND THEN THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE TO REAPPLY.
HOW THOSE SANCTIONS ARE APPLIED.
I THINK IT WOULD SPREAD THEMSELVES TOO THIN.
SO, I DON'T THINK THEY HAVE THE BANDWIDTH TO DO THAT AND THE SCALE TO DO THAT.
WHEN WE MET RECENTLY, WE TALKED ABOUT THE FACT THAT LAST YEAR WE TOOK TWO PRACTICE TESTS.
YES, SIR. AND IF THOSE RESULTS IN YET.
YES, SIR. WE HAVE COMPLETED ALL OF THE INTERIM TESTING.
WE DID IT RIGHT BEFORE SPRING BREAK.
[00:15:03]
SO, I'M, I'M IN THE PROCESS OF ANALYZING ALL OF THOSE.ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE NOTICED IS.
AND DR. LOPEZ REFERENCED THE GROWTH, WHAT WE HAVE NOTICED IS THAT AS OPPOSED TO LAST YEAR, WE'RE ON ACTUAL STAR.
WE SAW A MAJOR DIP IN OUR STUDENTS PERFORMING AT THE MEETS PLUS OR THE MEETS AND MASTER'S LEVEL.
WE'RE SEEING THE GAINS OF STUDENTS PERFORMING AT MEETS AND MASTER'S ON INTERIM.
SO AGAIN, IT'S JUST A DATA POINT.
THIS IS WHAT I TELL OUR PRINCIPALS EVERY DAY.
IT'S A DATA POINT, NOT THE DATA POINT.
AND THEN EVERYBODY, EVERYTHING ELSE WILL COME.
AND COULD YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU GO OUT AND TALK TO THE PRINCIPALS FROM EACH OF THE SCHOOLS, HOW YOU INTERPRET THE RESULTS, SO THEY CAN THEN GET TO THE KID LEVEL AND THE TEACHER.
MY ROLE IS REALLY TO JUST HELP BRING CLARITY TO THE DATA THAT WE ALREADY HAVE.
AND SO, IN MEETING WITH THOSE PRINCIPALS JUST MAKING THE ACCOUNTABILITY RULES SIMPLE SO THAT THEY CAN REALLY UNDERSTAND, OKAY, WHAT IS IT THAT WE'RE BEING MEASURED AGAINST? BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, NOT BEING LOST IN AVERAGES, BUT REALLY GETTING DOWN TO THE STUDENT.
AND SO WE PROVIDE A VARIETY OF WAYS THAT WE'RE ABLE TO DO THAT.
THIS IS WHERE THEY WERE LAST YEAR ON SPRING 2023.
ON THE PREDICTION FOR INTERIM.
NOW GO FORTH AND AND USE YOUR YOUR TOOLS AS INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERS TO TO SUPPORT THE KIDS THAT ARE EITHER NOT YET ON GRADE LEVEL OR ARE SHOWING THAT THEY'RE NOT PERFORMING AT THE SAME PERFORMANCE LEVEL AS THEY WERE LAST YEAR, BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT STUDENTS LOSING GROUND.
RIGHT, MISS? THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
YEAH. THE THING THAT STRIKES ME IN LOOKING THROUGH THE DATA IS IT LOOKS LIKE WE START OFF WITH OUR EARLY GRADES STRONG WHEN COMPARED TO REGION AND STATE COMPARABLES.
AND STARTING IN ABOUT FIFTH GRADE, WE SEE A DIP.
AND THAT DIP LASTS UNTIL HIGH SCHOOL.
SO, I MEAN, AND I UNDERSTAND THAT BECAUSE WHEN I ASKED THIS QUESTION, I THINK I FEEL LIKE I ASK IT A LOT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS OR THE, THE TROUBLED YEARS AS A PARENT OF THREE KIDS THAT'S STILL OTHER KIDS GO THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL, TOO.
I MEAN, SO WHAT IS IT ABOUT OUR DISTRICT SPECIFICALLY IN SCIENCE AND MATH ESPECIALLY, THAT IS CAUSING THIS DECLINE ON THE STAR EXAM IN THOSE PARTICULAR YEARS? GREAT QUESTION. SO FOR THE SCIENCE AT MIDDLE SCHOOL, WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THERE'S A A THREE YEAR GAP BETWEEN THEY TAKE AN ASSESSMENT IN FIFTH GRADE SCIENCE, THEN THEY ARE IN A SIXTH GRADE CONTENT, SEVENTH GRADE CONTENT.
THEN IN EIGHTH GRADE IS WHEN THEY TAKE THE NEXT SCIENCE EXAM.
THAT ASSESSMENT ACTUALLY PULLS CONTENT AND STANDARDS FROM GRADE SIX AND FROM GRADE SEVEN.
SO THINKING ABOUT THE HIGH MOBILITY OF OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND WE HAVE SO MANY STUDENTS THAT ARE COMING IN AND OUT WE CAN'T CONTROL WHAT TYPE OF INSTRUCTION THOSE STUDENTS RECEIVED IN SIXTH GRADE OR SEVENTH GRADE IN OTHER DISTRICTS, IN OTHER COUNTRIES, IN OTHER STATES.
AND SO THAT EIGHTH GRADE SCIENCE EXAM REALLY DOES.
WHEREAS THOSE STANDARDS ARE ARE ACROSS THE THREE GRADE LEVELS.
THE OTHER THING IS WITH OUR MATH BEFORE IT BECAME A SENATE BILL, OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH WAS ALREADY IN ON TRACK FOR THAT ACCELERATION.
SO WHEN WE'RE LOOKING AT SIXTH GRADE MATH RESULTS AS COMPARED TO THE STATE, WE HAVE A LOT OF STUDENTS, EVEN BEFORE THE 40% REQUIREMENT THAT WERE TAKING ABOVE GRADE LEVEL ASSESSMENTS.
[00:20:03]
SO. THAT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT EVEN WHEN I DID THE PRESENTATION NOT LONG AGO TO HELP DR.LOPEZ WITH HIS PRESENTATION, OR DR.
WE CAN'T SEPARATE OUT GRADE SIX OR GRADE SEVEN.
THERE'S NOT A WAY TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT AT THE STATE LEVEL.
I THINK THAT WOULD GIVE US A BETTER COMPARISON.
EIGHTH GRADERS VERSUS GRADE EIGHT SEVENTH GRADERS.
AND SO BECAUSE SO MANY DIFFERENT DISTRICTS DO IT DIFFERENTLY, IT'S VERY HARD TO COMPARE.
TO TRULY COMPARE IN APPLES TO APPLES FOR OUR OUR MATH SPECIFICALLY.
ADAMS. CAN I ADD SOMETHING REALLY QUICK? YEAH, SURE. SO I ALSO WANT TO MAKE YOU AWARE THAT AND I THINK WE BROUGHT IT UP BEFORE THAT.
AND SO WE'VE DONE A LOT OF WORK IN MAKING SURE THAT WE PREPARE OUR TEACHERS WITH THE CURRICULUM ASPECT, BUT ALSO IN SETTING THE EXPECTATIONS WITH STUDENTS AND PREPARING THEM.
WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT.
SO THE TURNOVER THAT WE'VE HAD, ESPECIALLY AFTER COVID IN MATH HAS BEEN WAS EXTREME.
WE HAVE A LOT OF NON-CERTIFIED TEACHERS.
LIKE SHE MENTIONED INTERIM HAS SHOWN SOME SUCCESS.
SO WE'RE HOPING THAT WE SEE SOME GAINS THERE.
OUR IDOLS HAVE BEEN VERY INTENTIONAL IN PREPARING AND WITH THE RAT TEAM PREPARING OUR PRINCIPALS TO ENSURE THAT WE'RE TARGETING THOSE GAPS, BUT NOT JUST STUDENT GAPS. WE ALSO HAVE TO BUILD THE CAPACITY OF OUR TEACHERS IN THOSE GRADE LEVELS AS WELL.
AND I GUESS THAT'S THE CONCERN BECAUSE IN IT'S NOT JUST I'M NOT IT'S SPECIFICALLY DIDN'T FOCUS JUST ON MIDDLE SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL AS PART OF THIS GAP. BUT YOU CAN SEE IT START IN FIFTH GRADE.
AND THAT SPECIFICALLY IN SCIENCE WHERE, YOU KNOW, WE'RE TRAILING ON AN APPROACHES LEVEL.
JOYNER'S POSITION IN REGARDING TURNOVER AND STUDENTS THAT COME IN WITH A THREE YEAR GAP.
BUT THIS IS EVERYONE'S FIRST ASSESSMENT REALLY ON SCIENCE STATEWIDE.
AND I GUESS THE QUESTION IS, DO WE DO WE EXPECT THAT THERE'S SOMETHING FUNDAMENTAL ABOUT THE CURRICULUM THAT WE'RE TEACHING AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL THAT IS NOT CARRYING FORWARD TO WHERE THIS FIRST SCIENCE ASSESSMENT, WE'RE ALREADY STARTING BEHIND THE BLOCKS, AND THEN IT JUST CARRIES THROUGH ON SCIENCE THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL. I MEAN, I DON'T SEE IT AS SO MUCH A THREE YEAR THING.
WE ALREADY STARTED OFF BEHIND AND WE JUST DIDN'T CLOSE THAT GAP BY THE TIME WE GOT TO EIGHTH GRADE.
HEY, WES, CAN I ADD SOMETHING TO WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THOUGH? I'M CURIOUS TOO WITH NOW.
AND MAYBE YOU CAN ANSWER THIS, MR. PERALEZ. WITH THE IDEA OF US GETTING 290 MORE TEACHERS THAT ARE GOING TO QUALIFY FOR THAT.
IF THEY ARE MASTER TEACHERS, ARE THEY GOING TO ARE THEY? WHAT LEVEL ARE THEY? ARE THEY AT MIDDLE SCHOOL? ARE THEY HIGH SCHOOL? SO THAT WE CAN OBTAIN THOSE MASTERY TEACHERS AT THE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL TO HELP RAISE THESE SCORES LIKE HE'S TALKING ABOUT AT THAT MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL.
WE HAVE TIA DESIGNATED TEACHERS AT ALL THREE LEVELS.
IT'S PRETTY SUBSTANTIAL FOR ALL THREE LEVELS, BUT DR.
ADAMS. MR. JOHNSON. THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD OBSERVATION.
AND I THINK IT'S WELL, THERE'S A LOT OF LAYERS TO THIS.
SO OUR PRIORITIES COMING OUT OF THAT WAS THERE.
NOW WE'RE REPRIORITIZING, OKAY.
WE HAVE TO DOUBLE DOWN AND ADDRESS SCIENCE.
AND FRANKLY, THAT'S NOT GOING TO START IN FIFTH GRADE.
AND TO THE SECOND POINT I WOULD WANT TO POINT OUT IS THE TRANSITIONS IN OUR SYSTEM ARE THE WEAK POINTS RIGHT NOW THE TRANSITION OR THE HANDOFF BETWEEN FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE AND EIGHTH TO NINTH GRADE.
AND THAT'S WHAT OUR FOCUS HAS BEEN.
IT'S GOING TO BE OUR FOCUS. CURRICULARLY HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT THE CURRICULUM IS RIGOROUS AND ALIGNED AS WE MAKE THAT TRANSITION? AND I THINK, YOU KNOW, MAYBE MORE IMPORTANTLY, MOST IMPORTANTLY, IS SUPPORTING THE TEACHER AND THAT TRANSITION AND WELLS PD AND SO THAT'S TWO AREAS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON NOW. THE THIRD THING I WOULD ADD IS EVEN IN SUMMER PROGRAMING, STARTING TO LOOK AT THINGS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY THERE AND THINKING THROUGH, OKAY, THE HANDOFF BETWEEN MIDDLE
[00:25:07]
SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL OR FIFTH GRADE TO SIXTH GRADE, HOW DO WE BETTER SUPPORT KIDS IN THAT TRANSITION? SO I THINK PART OF IT IS HOW WE SUPPORT KIDS IN THE TRANSITION, ESPECIALLY FROM ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE.AND HOW DO WE SUPPORT TEACHERS IN THAT TRANSITION, TOO, WITH PD CURRICULUM? AND I THINK, AGAIN, COME BACK TO SCIENCE SPECIFICALLY, THAT'S A PERFECT TIME NOW, BECAUSE THE FIRST TIME SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE, THAT WE'VE HAD A COMPLETELY COMPREHENSIVE SCIENCE CURRICULUM WHERE EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE NOT PULLING PIECES FROM DIFFERENT AREAS.
MS STANLEY. SO BASED ON ALL THAT WE JUST SAID, WITH ALL THE NEW SCIENCE CURRICULUM, IS IT A REASONABLE EXPECTATION TO EXPECT SOMETHING SIGNIFICANTLY HAPPENING IN THIS NEXT YEAR, OR IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO SAY THAT, WELL, WE WE NEED A YEAR OR TWO BEFORE WE'RE GOING TO SEE THE RESULTS. WELL.
OUR DATA. OUR DATA NOW IS TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
WHERE OUR CBA DATA IS UP, OUR INTERIM DATA IS UP.
SO WE ARE SEEING THAT WE SHOULD BE DOING BETTER.
IN OUR TEACHER WALKS, WE ALSO SEE, YOU KNOW, THE TEACHER CAPACITY.
WE'RE BUILDING IT. AND SO I DO FORESEE US DOING BETTER IN STAR.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? THANK YOU, MR. JOYNER. THANK YOU. NEXT ITEM.
DR. LOPEZ ANY. EXECUTIVE SESSION ITEMS. I THINK YOU JUST BEAT JAMIE MILLER.
THERE'S NO EXECUTIVE SESSION ITEMS. I THINK YOU NEED TO GIVE HIM A CALL AND SAY, THIS IS HOW YOU RUN A MEETING, MR. MILLER. THANK YOU.
DO I HAVE A MOTION FOR ADJOURNMENT?
[VII. Adjournment]
SO MOVED. THANK YOU, MR. JOHNSON. MEETING'S ADJOURNED AT 627.
